Work Together In Real Time On Docs, Spreadsheets and More. Learn How.

Google Docs has recently dropped support for older Office file formats (.doc, .xls and .ppt) in favor of the newer file formats like docx, .xlsx and .pptx.

You can still import your old .doc documents or .ppt presentations into Google Docs but if you are to export any of these files out of Google Docs, you’ll have to choose the new {doc|ppt|xls}x formats that are natively supported in Office 2007 and later.

Google Docs still supports the old Microsoft Office file formats

Download Google Docs in Old Office Formats
The newer file formats are definitely better but if some of your clients are still running the older versions of Microsoft Office, here’s how you can make your Google Docs documents compatible with their version of Office.

Option 1: Ask them to install the Office Compatibility Pack. This pack will allow users of Office XP and Office 2003 to open and edit files that are saved in the new Office formats.

Option 2: Save the files out of Google Docs as docx and then use any of the online conversion tools (for example, Zamzar) to convert these files back to the old format.

Option 3: Abhishek discovered a better solution. You can email any document, spreadsheet or presentation from Google Docs to yourself as an email attachment and Google will send you that file in the old Office formats (see screenshot).

To email a document from Google Docs, go to File -> Email as Attachment and then choose the appropriate format from the dropdown.

Bonus Tip: You can change the extension of a .docx file to .zip and it can then be viewed inside any web browser without even requiring Microsoft Office or Google Docs.

Free Email by Google Switch to Gmail, Sign up now!

You are expecting an important email from the client, he just confirmed over the phone that the mail has left his outbox but the message is nowhere to be found in your inbox. An hour later, the email finally arrives.

See the entire path travelled by the email message

Emails are usually delivered in a second or two so why did it take so long for this particular message to reach your mailbox? Was it due to the attachments? Or was there a problem with your mail server?

You can usually find the reason for the delay in the email message itself. Open the message inside Gmail and choose Show Original to view the message headers.

Here you will see a list of machines (or servers) that a message had to pass through before reaching the recipient’s mailbox. The IP addresses are listed in the reverse order so start from the bottom all the way up to see the actual path travelled by an email message.

The message headers may appear complex and geeky but they really aren’t. For instance, the following line from the headers simply indicates that Google’s mail server received the message from Hotmail servers on 29-Jul-2012 at 07:25:37 (PDT).

Received: from dub0-omc3-s2.dub0.hotmail.com ([157.55.2.11])
        by mx.google.com with ESMTP id 92.2012.07.29.07.25.36;
        Sun, 29 Jul 2012 07:25:37 -0700 (PDT)
Now copy the full message header to the clipboard and paste it into Google Apps’ Toolbox. This tool will analyze the email’s path and, based on the timestamps when it passed the different machines, it will tell you the exact source that is responsible for delaying the message delivery. Here’s a sample report:

A sample email delivery report

The toolbox is part of Google Apps but it should be able to analyze messages from other Outlook and other email programs as well because the message headers have a standard format.

Free Email by Google Switch to Gmail, Sign up now!

A warning message in Google Chrome v22.0

Google wants your Chrome browser safe and therefore discourages users from installing any web apps and extensions that aren’t available in the official Chrome Web Store.

If someone tries to add an unapproved extension (CRX file) or a user-script (*.user.js) in Chrome, the browser will throw a yellow warning message as shown in the above screenshot.

There’s however an easy workaround to this problem.

First download the CRX file of any Chrome extension /web-app to your computer. Then click the Settings icon in Chrome (previously a Wrench icon) and go to Tools -> Extensions. Drag and drop the CRX file on this page and Chrome will gladly install the add-on.

Here’s a video demo illustrating all the steps in detail. The same technique can be used to install the unofficial Greasemonkey userscripts in Chrome.

Would you like to add some branding to your YouTube videos? Maybe an overlay logo or some sort of a watermark image that is permanently displayed in one of the corners of the video (similar to TV programming).

You can use any video editing software to add logos or watermarks to your videos before uploading them to YouTube but how do you put them in your existing videos that are already on the web?

Well, YouTube has recently added a new feature called InVideo Programming that will help you add any custom image to all your Youtube videos with a few clicks without having to edit the original video.

Put a logo inside your YouTube Videos

The image can be your brand’s logo (make sure it’s a transparent png) or use one of these YouTube buttons to promote your main YouTube channel inside all your videos.

You can choose to display the logo at the start of the video, somewhere in the middle or even for the entire duration of the video. Also, the logo can be placed in either corners of the YouTube player.

That said, YouTube internally uses annotations to display the images over the video and thus, if you a YouTube viewer has turned off annotations, your logo won’t be visible.

Share Files across Your devices Share Files with family and friends

Amazon Glacier, if you are new, is an online backup service from Amazon where you can store files by paying as little as 1¢ per GB of storage space per month. Glacier is a recommended option for saving copies of files that are important but not accessed very frequently – like the photo archives on your disk.

Amazon doesn’t provide a file uploading tool for Glacier but there are several third-party Glacier clients that you may use to easily upload files and folders from the local disk to the Glacier cloud with a easy drag-n-drop interface.

There’s another service in town called IceBox that eliminates the need for installing a separate Glacier client. The service links Amazon Glacier with your Dropbox account and any files that you add to a particular Dropbox folder are automatically uploaded to your Glacier vault.

The Dropbox files are queued for uploading to Amazon Glacier

This is a one-way operation so once the files have been uploaded from Dropbox to Glacier, you can safely delete the copies inside Dropbox without affecting the files that are already inside Glacier. You can also browse the file list on the IceBox website to verify that all your Dropbox files have been successfully added to Glacier.

To get started, go to the AWS dashboard to request your Access Keys for the Amazon Glacier service. Next follow the wizard on the Icebox website to link your Amazon and Dropbox accounts. This will create a new folder in your Dropbox folder and any files that you add to this folder go straight into your Glacier vault.

The service initially had a major security vulnerability – anyone could access your Amazon Keys by simply changing the URL – but the issue has been patched now. Alternatively, you may create a guest user in AWS for IceBox and grant access to only the Vault Archive and none of the other assets in your Amazon cloud.

Work Together In Real Time On Docs, Spreadsheets and More. Learn How.

How do you login to any web service if do not remember the password? The answer is easy.

You will click the “forgot password” link on the sign-in page, the website will ask you to provide an alternate email address associated with your account and a password reset link will be sent to that address. Simple.

However, if you are using Yahoo Mail, Flickr or any of the other Yahoo services, recovering your account’s password involves a few more steps.

Yahoo will verify your identity before sending the password reset link.

You will be required to provide your date of birth, your country of residence and your postal code and Yahoo will only send the password reset link to your alternate email address if the entered information matches with the data stored in your Yahoo profile.

I created a second email account at Yahoo sometime back for testing but did not use the accurate birth date in my profile. I am therefore having trouble getting into that Yahoo account as I no longer remember the birth date I entered at the time of creating the account and without it, Yahoo won’t send the password reset link to my alternate address.

Do yourself a favor. Go to edit.yahoo.com and make a note of the postal code, date of birth and country that is associated with your Yahoo profile – you may need this information in case you ever forget your Yahoo account’s password like I did.

Bonus Tip: If you are a Gmail user, keep a record of your account creation date as that information will be required in case you ever lose access to your Google Account.

Seamlessly View,Edit,Share Content Online with Microsoft® Office 365

Why do emails have ‘J’ in them?

You may have received email messages in the past that have the capital letter ‘J’ in them (see above screenshot). The letter mostly appears at the end of a paragraph but sometimes you may also also find this ‘J’ in the middle of a sentence.

What is the email sender trying to convey by adding the single letter ‘J’ to the message? Is it an abbreviation or an Internet slang that you not aware of?

I looked at the HTML source of one such email message and instantly got the answer:

<p class=3DMsoNormal>
<span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";>Thanks so much</span>
<span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Wingdings;'>J</span>
</p>
It turns out that the email was composed and send from Microsoft Outlook. In Outlook, if you add a smiley figure – something like :) or :-) – to your message, the email program automatically converts it into a smiley icon using the Wingdings font.

The Wingding fonts is installed on all Windows PCs but isn’t available on mobile devices. Hence, if you read that Outlook message on an Android phone or your iPad, the smiley icon is displayed as the capital letter J, which happens to be its Unicode equivalent (0x4A).

Also see: Outlook ruins Birthday Cake

The character code of J is the same as Wingdings’ smiley icon
How to Internet companies make money when the product is free?

Have you ever wondered how for-profit technology companies make money when they aren’t charging users a penny for the basic service? Are they following the freemium business model or is advertising the main source of revenue? Is the company profitable?

You can instantly find these answers on Quora or if the company is public, you can dig through their SEC filings or save some time and just bookmark this online chart.

This handy resource, prepared by SEER Interactive, shares the broader business model of the most well-known Internet companies from Dropbox to EverNote to Tumblr and you also get to know if the company is profitable or not.

LinkedIn makes money from advertising, from paid subscribers and they also sell professional data of job seekers to recruiters.

create your own personalised QR's customise with your own images

When you print any web page, your web browser will automatically add the URL of the site in either the footer or the header area of all the printed pages. This is useful because you will always remember the source website where you printed those pages from.

The problem is that web page URLs can be long and complex and people are likely to make errors typing them into the browser.

An alternative would be that you create a short URL (using bit.ly or goo.gl) and append it all your printed pages. The other more convenient option is that you add a QR code to the printed copy that will link the printed page to the source web page with a quick scan.

A QR Code in the print copy of a web page

Add a QR Code to Printed Web Pages using CSS
You will be surprised to know how easy it is to add a QR code to any web page but before I share the implementation detail, let’s see a live example.

Open any article page (for example, this one) and press Ctrl+P (or Cmd+P on a Mac) to open the Print Preview dialog. Scroll to the last page and you will find a QR code that, upon scanning, would lead you to the source page. (If the QR Code missing, just open the Print Preview dialog again.)

If you are to implement something similar in your site, just add the following snippet to your website template.

<style type="text/css">
@media print {
       body:after{
            content:url(http://chart.googleapis.com/chart?
                  cht=qr&chs=200x200&choe=UTF-8&chld=H&chl=<<URL>>)
            }
}
</style>

*Replace URL with the actual URL of your web page
We are basically adding a QR Code image after the <body> tag and since the CSS media type is set to “print,” the QR Code will only appear in the printed version of the page. The QR Code is generated dynamically using the Google Charts API and will vary based on the URL.

WordPress – To add QR Code support in WordPress print stylesheets, open the template file of your WordPress (like header.php or even index.php) and copy-paste the following code anywhere inside the <head> tag:

<?php if (is_single()) : ?>
<style type="text/css">
    @media print {
      body:after { content:url (
         http://chart.googleapis.com/chart?cht=qr&chs=200x200&choe=UTF-8&chld=H&chl=<?= the_permalink(); ?>)
      }
    }
</style>
<?php endif; ?>
Blogger – The equivalent code for classic Blogger templates would be something like this. If you are using the new XML based Blogger templates, you probably need to use data:blog.canonicalUrl (for the permalink) with the condition set as <b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == “item”‘> since we are only displaying QR codes on individual post pages and not the archives.

<ItemPage><Blogger>
<style type="text/css">
    @media print {
      body:after { content:url (
         http://chart.googleapis.com/chart?cht=qr&chs=200x200&choe=UTF-8&chld=H&chl=<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>)
      }
    }
</style>
</Blogger></ItemPage>

The current location of Indian Railways Trains on Google Maps

The Indian Railways has just launched RailRadar, a useful website that shows the current geographical location of any train on a Google Map.

To get started, you can zoom-in to any location /city on the map to see all the trains which are arriving at the station or have just departed. Or you can use expand the left sidebar to search trains by name, by train number or by the station name.

If you click a particular train, the map will also show the exact route of the train including all the stops and the current location of the train. The train markers highlighted in blue indicate trains that are running on time while the red markers indicate trains that are delayed or behind schedule.

The press release says that the train data is refresh every 5 minutes and the displayed location and running status of any trains displayed on the Google will always be delayed by at least 5 minutes.

The site is extremely useful and it will work on your mobile phone as well.

Create a Map of your Google Contacts

If you have been using Google Contacts (or any other address book*) to store the postal addresses of your friends and colleagues, you can easily create an online Google Map with all these address or even view them inside Google Earth. Here are the steps:

Make a copy of this Google Sheet in your own Google Docs account.
From the Google Contacts menu in the sheet, choose Initialize and authorize the script (see source code) to access your Google Contacts.
Next choose Generate KML under the same menu and the script will send a KML file to your email account.
Go to your mailbox and download the KML file to the desktop. You can double-click this file to directly open it inside Google Earth. You can click the pin /marker to read the full address and name of the contact.

Alternatively, you can upload the KML file to the web and copy-paste the URL of the KML file into the Google Maps Search box as shown below (see a sample map).

Also see: Google Maps Address Lookup

Internally, the Google Apps Script reads the home /work postal addresses of your Google Contacts and then uses the geocoding service** of Google Maps to transform these human-readable address into latitudes and longitude values. These points (or placemarks) are finally put in a KML file that you can open inside Google Earth or Google Maps.

[*] If you aren’t using Google Contacts, you can still use the script. Export the contacts data from your existing address book (like Hotmail or Yahoo Mail) as a CSV file and import the file into Google Contacts.
[**] Google’s Geocoding service allows you make 2,500 requests per IP per day.

Merge, Append, Stamp, Form Fill PDF Docs from ASP with IIS integration.

Every week, LinkedIn sends an email notification with a list of people who have recently viewed my profile on the LinkedIn website. The list includes only 5 profiles but if I were a premium member of LinkedIn, they will happily offer me the complete list of people who’ve viewed my profile the previous week.

This feature has been part of LinkedIn for a long time but the way they have been pushing it now makes me a little uncomfortable. If I am searching for a person on Google and land up on a LinkedIn profile, I would really not like LinkedIn to send him or her an email with the details of my visit.

Fortunately, LinkedIn does provide a simple option to help you completely disable the “Who Viewed the Profile” feature from your account.

Who viewed my profile on LinkedIn

You can either click here and choose the “anonymous” option or sign-in from the Linked homepage, choose Settings and then choose “Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile.”

Once you have disabled the feature, LinkedIn will neither share your visits with other users nor will you get to know about other LinkedIn users who have recently viewed your profile.

Work Together In Real Time On Docs, Spreadsheets and More. Learn How.

You installed a shiny new Android app on your phone but it keeps pushing ads and other unwanted alerts to your phone’s notification bar. How do you quickly uninstall this app or at least prevent it from sending any more notifications?

If your phone (or tablet) is running Android 4.1 or later, here’s an easy way.

Pull down the phone’s stats bar and long-press the notification. Tap the “App Info” button and the next screen will offer you an option to completely uninstall the app or use “Force Stop” to prevent the app from running in the background for this session.

Step 1: Tap the notification to open the App Info window.

Step 2: Tap uninstall to get rid of the app permanently.

Alternatively, you can uncheck the “Show Notifications” checkbox if you would like to keep the app but cripple its ability to put notifications in your status bar.

Gmail is Smart, Practical and Fun to Use. Try it, it's Easy and Free!

Would you like to send a confidential note to a friend that self-destructs after it has been read so that no one else (including your friend) can ever see that secret note again? Maybe it has a password that shouldn’t be stored anywhere. Or you are worried that the private note can get leaked online.

There are web apps – like Burn Note and Privnote - that offer an easy solution. They essentially create a temporary web page that auto-expires after it has been viewed once. Dashlane is another app also lets you send encrypted notes from the desktop and the recipient gets 30 minutes of reading time after which the note will vanish forever.

Alternatively, you can even use Google Docs to send secret, self-destructing messages to anyone in few easy steps. Here’s a quick video demo:

Self-Destructing Messages in Google Docs
It takes a minute to convert a Google Docs sheet into a self-destructing one.

Click here to make a copy of the Google sheet in your own account. Once the sheet is auto-cleared, type your secret message anywhere inside the sheet and hit the Share button to send it to a friend. Make sure the permission is set to “Can Edit” in the sharing window.

Your friend opens the sheet, reads the message and after 10 seconds, the entire sheet on his screen will clear itself. If you wish to send another self-destructing message, create a copy of the original sheet and repeat the steps.

How does it work?

The trick is simple. We have an onOpen trigger attached to the Google sheet that becomes active as soon as the sheet is opened. This trigger waits for 10 seconds (Utilities.sleep) and then runs the clear() command to empty all the cells of the sheet.

Here’s the Google Apps Script code that actually makes your “secret message” vanish.

function onOpen() {

var time = 10; // Wait Time (in seconds)

var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
ss.toast("This message will disappear after " + time + " seconds");

Utilities.sleep(time*1000);
ss.toast("We are now sending this private note to the shredder");

ss.getActiveSheet()
   .getRange(1, 1, ss.getLastRow(), ss.getLastColumn()).clear();
}

Your Favorite Office Programs Are. Now Available Anytime, Anywhere.

Some good news here. YouTube publishers will soon be allowed to create clickable hyperlinks to their own website from within a video using annotations. Thus, if your YouTube video explains how to boil an egg, you can insert an annotation linking to your blog post where the steps are described in greater detail.

Dror Shimshowitz, YouTube Head of Product for Creators, made this announcement last week while speaking at a YouTube Partner event in San Bruno.

YouTube does support clickable annotations at this time but a limitation is that these links should either point to another YouTube video or a search results page on the YouTube website. With the new changes, publishers in good standing will be able to drive traffic to their own website from YouTube videos.

Dror didn’t exactly specify the time frame when this feature will go live but, hopefully, the wait shouldn’t be long as another feature discussed at the same event – Invideo Programming – is already live on YouTube.

Gmail is Smart, Practical and Fun to Use. Try it, it's Easy and Free!

When you absolutely have to get your work done but can’t resist the urge to constantly check your emails, tweets or your Facebook, it may be a good idea to completely lock yourself out of the Internet until the more important tasks are complete.

The New York Times has aggregated tips from some well-known authors on how they manage to stay productive (i.e., focus on book-writing) in the midst of online distractions and some of them offered similar advice:

Nick Bilton - I use an hourglass to ward off distractions. Once it’s flipped, my phone goes into Airplane Mode and I completely turn off the Internet in my home. I don’t allow myself to enter the Web’s vortex until every last grain of sand has drained into the base of the hourglass.

David Carr – I went to a cabin in the woods, yes, that had no Internet. It did have dial-up access, which is like having no Internet at all. Things moved very quickly after that.

You can disable / enable Internet on your Windows PC with a click!

A Shortcut to Turn Off the Internet
Should you ever wish to “forcefully” step away from the Internet for a while, the Toggle Internet script will make the task a little easier for you. This little script will completely disable the Internet on your Windows computer with a click and you can restore the Internet connection anytime later with, again, a click.

To give this a try, download Toggle-Internet.bat on your desktop, right click, choose “Run as Administrator” and you’ll be instantly disconnected from the Internet. Later, when you need to reconnect, just right-click the same file and run as an admin as before.

Internally, the script merely toggles the status of your Network Adapter (also known as the LAN adapter or Ethernet card) thus shutting down the Internet for you. If you were to disable or enable the Network Adapter manually, the steps would be Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> View Network Status -> Change Adapter Settings.

One more thing. Toggle Internet will block all sites but should you wish to disable access to just a select groups of distracting websites while staying connected to Google Docs or your email, use Let Me Work. You can specify the list of sites that should be blocked and this script will modify the Windows HOSTS file to shut them off, temporarily.

Almost all image editing programs, including the good-old MS Paint, have built-in resizing tools to help you quickly change the dimensions (or resolution) of your photos. However, if there were a requirement to resize a large number of images to multiple sizes, you might have to take the help of more complicated tools like GIMP or even Photoshop.

Transfer multiple images to your Dropbox folder to resize automatically!

Resize Photos with the help of Dropbox
There’s a new Dropbox-based option as well that can help you resize a large number of images automatically without requiring any additional software – it’s called SizzlePig.

SizzlePig connects to your Dropbox account and then continuously monitors a particular folder inside your main Dropbox folder. As soon as you add any new images to this “watch” folder, SizzlePig resizes the entire batch in the required dimensions and copies the processed images back to your Dropbox folder.

To get started, you need to define the input and output folders (they should exist inside your Dropbox folder) and also specify the various sizes that your images should be resized to. Advanced users may also experiment with different image formats should they wish to reduce the size (and the visual quality) of the processed images.

Also, if you aren’t too happy with the quality of compressed images, you can always manually adjust the scale or the crop dimensions of individual images and SizzlePig will remember your preferences for images that have the same name.

The service is in private beta though it is expected to go live later today. Also, it is completely free at this time though it is unlikely to stay like that forever.

Free Reviews and Articles for Leading Authoring Tools.

You have been using images and videos to complement the text content on your website but do you know that it is also possible to embed ebook samples into your web pages?

Amazon and Google Books are home to hundreds and thousands of ebooks and they do allow other websites to embed these ebooks with a few lines of code. Amazon lets you embed few sample chapters from the book while in the case of Google Books, you can embed the entire e-book provided it is in public domain or free.

How to Embed Kindle Books
To embed a Kindle ebook on your website, all you need to know is the ASIN code of the ebook and you are good to go. This unique code can be easily found on the product page of any Amazon title.

The Kindle ebooks can been embedded either using JavaScript (see example) or even the IFRAME tag in case you aren’t allowed to include JavaScript in your web pages.

Kindle Embeds with JavaScript
<div id='Kindle-Reader'></div>
<script type='text/javascript'
  src='http://kindleweb.s3.amazonaws.com/app/KindleReader-min.js'></script>
<script>KindleReader.LoadSample({
   containerID: 'Kindle-Reader', width: '600', height: '800',
   asin: 'B0049U4CCE',assoctag: 'labnol-20'});
</script>
You need to change the book’s ASIN code (in this case, B0049U4CCE) and the assoctag value (in this case, labnol-20) with your own Amazon Associates ID.

Kindle Embeds with IFRAME
<iframe height="800" width="600" frameborder="0" src="http://kindleweb.s3.amazonaws.com/app/1.0.11.053.093655/KindleReaderApp.html?asin=B000JQUT8S&assoctag=labnol-20">
</iframe>
You may also experiment with the height and width parameters (in pixels) to ensure that the embedded book fits perfectly into your site’s layout.

Bonus Tip: If you would like to directly link to the Kindle book sample without having to embed it on a page, just use the following link (remember to replace the ASIN value):

http://kindleweb.s3.amazonaws.com/content/B000JQUT8S/gz_sample.html

Do you have any unused disk partitions or drives in Windows Explorer?

You can hide them all from view with a simply registry hack

If you would like to hide any of the disk drives inside Windows Explorer, there’s a tiny freeware utility called NoDrives Manager that will help.

Open the NoDrives utility, select one or more drive letters (like C: or Z:) that should be kept hidden and save the changes. The next time you restart your Windows computer, the selected drives will no longer be available inside Windows Explorer. This can also be used for hiding the CD or DVD drives attached to your computer.

Also see: How to Hide Files on your Computer

Internally, the tool simply modifies the Windows registry to make the selected drive invisible inside Windows Explorer though advanced users may still access the drive and its files through the Command Prompt.

Later, if you wish to toggle the visibility of these hidden drives, just open the NoDrives Manager program again, deselect the hidden drives and save the changes. Please do note that you will either have to restart your computer or relaunch the explorer.exe process for the changes to be applied.

NoDrives should work with all recent editions of Windows (both 32-bit and 64-bit are supported).

If you need some high quality images around a particular theme for your design project, be it web or print, there are dozens of stock photography sites out there that may just have what your looking for.

Research stock photos on Google Images before hitting the buy button!

Tips for Buying Stock Photos
That said, stock images can be a little expensive so you may want to do a little research before shelling out your hard-earned money on these images. Here are some tips:

Tip 1: Before finalizing any stock photo for your design project, always ensure that the image is not overused. You can easily determine this with the help of Google Images.

First download the thumbnail image from the stock photography website and upload it to images.google.com. Hit the Search button and then click “More Sizes.” If you get too many results (as in the screenshot above), the selected graphic is too popular on the web and you may want to pick a different photograph.

Tip 2: Some stock photographers may choose to sell their images on multiple websites but the pricing will often vary across these different sites. There aren’t any “functional” price comparison sites for stock photographs but you can use Google again to discover stock websites that offer the best deal on a particular photograph.

First copy the extract description of the image from the stock photography website and paste it into Google – put it in quotes for an exact match. Also, add the word “stock” to your search query to limit your search results to stock photography websites. Now select the “Sites with images” option under “More Search Tools” (see next screenshot) to quickly know if the underlying stock website offers the same image or not.

Now you can visit each of these matching sites to see if any of them offer better deals.

Find if an image is available on other stock photography websites?

Accesible Anywhere, Affordable & Safe. Sign up for a Free Trial Now!

Microsoft today released Windows 8 to the world.

If you have a computer that running either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may head over to windows.com to buy your own upgrade copy of Windows 8 Pro (Professional) edition for $39.99 (or 1,999 if you are in India). This is an extremely reasonable price and it will stay valid until January, 2013.

Prior to releasing the full version of Windows 8, Microsoft had offered a release preview edition that allowed enthusiasts to evaluate the new software before making the switch. Now that Windows 8 final is available, the release preview edition has been pulled from the Microsoft website.

That said, if you would like to try out Windows 8 before buying the upgrade pack, here’s an easy way. Go to msdn.microsoft.com, scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll find links to download the 90-day trial edition of Windows 8. Microsoft provides these evaluation copies for developers but even consumers can download them for trying Windows 8.

A word of caution though. These are evaluation copies that will expire after 90 days and cannot be upgraded to the final edition. You should therefore create a bootable Windows 8 DVD from the evaluation ISOs and either set them up in a dual-boot environment or, better still, setup a Virtual Machine.
