Celebrated watercolorists

2011-08-20T03:13:00.001+05:00

An article from a renowned newspaper "BUSINESS RECORDER" on painters including Mr. Amin Kasmani posted by "Mr. Nadeem Zuberi", published on May 14 2011, Saturday.

Amin Kasmani

Watercolour painting is extremely old, dating back to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe, and has been used for manuscript illumination since at least Egyptian times and especially in the European Middle Ages. And also in the region of sub-continent watercolour is taken as the most powerful indigenous medium in visual art.

In the past the artists use the medium of watercolour as most communicative form of visual expression in most contemporary context. The former artists painted mostly houses and street scenes and boat scenes while the latter took for their subject the life of the people, such as fruit sellers, cage makers, tea stalls and also some figure studies of men and women but no close-ups of faces.

But for quite sometime watercolour medium is not being used by the artists as was in the past, now most of the artist prefer oils, acrylic and other mix media to create their master pieces. Viewing this situation Karachi School of Art arranged a group show of some famous and other lesser-known artist's artworks in watercolour medium. The aim of the show was to bring admired, widespread and enduring medium, watercolour back to the centre of our cultural heritage.

Since its inception Karachi School of Art has played an eminent role in conserving and propagating the tradition of watercolour in Pakistan. Karachi School of Art has made especial effort to bring this medium to the most contemporary context and practice in visual arts by imparting its education and including it in its curriculum.

The much more charming and modern style colour variations and cautious brushwork in Ather Jamal's paintings was a treat at the exhibition. His artworks with sensitive and sensible soft strokes skillfully render light effects on the figure and the objects creating a third dimension. He rises above the common practice of water colour.

His technique not only brings out the third dimension and the solidity of the figure but by the equal distribution of the light from one single source, hold together the image and gives it unity. The subtle indication of the shadows from the lightest to the darkest is very apt and artful. He even catches the light reflected from one area to the other.

Karachi art circle in the late 60's and early 70's witnessed a development in watercolour painting and provide a base that nurture many watercolour masters like Abdul Hayee. His techniques and skills in the application of colour and form show his engagement with the surrounding location which creates a bond with his paintings. He works with a profound understanding of his theme and medium.

His artworks at the show has eye-catching view of the dreamy landscape carrying water, trees, and birds. The effect of water and tall trees predominates with a changing tempo in his work. His paintings depict blooming flowers and shallow waters in fresh yellow, green and blues.

Exploring nature through the genre of landscapes and seascapes, Hayee creates aesthetically beautiful works of art motivated by his relationship with the surroundings. He is the most senior among the watercolourists much appreciated for his sensitive handling of the medium. Over the years Hayee's work has become softer and mature. Abdul Hayee is one of a few eminent watercolour artists who graduated from KSA and continue to explore this medium.

Amin Kasmani is also a diploma holder from Karachi School of Art. He mostly paints the realistic and impression paintings. He always tries to define beauty in the form of different landscape paintings and share themwith the viewers and try to make others realize and ponder about the nature's beauty. If one praise the nature's gift then he/she think about preserving it and enjoy its beauty that soothe the soul. Whether landscape or seascape Amin's artworks give pleasure to the tired eyes. His paintings depict immense tranquillity, peace and serenity of life, his canvas soothes the eyes and gives you an inner feeling of calmness. He works in detail, he takes care of every tiny aspect of the scene he is about to paint. One can witness it in his landscape and rural scenes.

S A Noory's paintings at the show depict a Sufi 'Saint' who is lost in love of Almighty. He successfully captures the aesthetics of the subject; the colour combinations along with perfect use of light and shadow enhance his paintings visual effects. He dealt with the subject very carefully. The portraying of facial expressions and situation he choose match with the moods of the subject. He acquires finest details with accuracy in his paintings. A man with his unique dress and ornaments in deep thought while praising the creator is wonderful.

At present most of the celebrated watercolourist in the contemporary art scenario in Pakistan belongs to Karachi School of Art. And most of the participating artists have also acquired art education from Karachi School of Art. Watercolour artists Abdul Hayee, Ather Jamal, Amin Kasmani, Dr. Manzoor, Inam Raja, Ghalib Baqar, G Abbas Kamagar, S.A. Noori, Saleem Akhter, Zafar Mahmood and Zohair Siddiqui participated in the exhibition.

Exotic yet delicately manipulating various subjects regarding women Inam Raja uses different motifs along with women figures enhancing impact of his artworks at the show. He tried to bring light to the positive aspects of life.

He aspires to promote such positive note to revive the good old connections in the lives of women. His skills can be judged by the diversity of images, colours and confident strokes in his paintings while bold and sharp lines in his drawings. He renders emotions and fervour with fresh and unique compositions which are skilfully created.

His paintings are visually appealing, dramatic and romanticized through symbols. The patterns in paintings are enhanced by the splashes of colours thus controlling in compositions. Nadeem Zuberi

When I entered the Fine Art Pakistan Gallery, Karachi I was amazed by the number of people who were there to attend the group exhibition of six watercolourists. Watercolour is taken as the most powerful indigenous medium in visual art in the region of sub-continent and the success of the exhibition point towards the love of people for this medium and how much they want to see and admire the works of our watercolour artists. The show succeeds to bring admired, widespread and enduring watercolour medium back to attention of the art lovers.

The artworks at the show have an eye-catching view of the dreamy landscapes and seascapes carrying water, trees, and birds, blooming flowers and shallow waters and boats in fresh yellow, green and blues. Some artists work depicts cityscapes with houses and street scenes while the other took for their subject the life of the people, such as markets having fruit sellers, cage makers and tea stalls. The collection of paintings include watercolour artists Amin Kasmani, Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, G Abbas Kamagar, Saleem Akhter, Zafar Mahmood and Shakurallah.

With vibrant colours and bold strokes, the canvases are imprints of Amin Kasmani's memories and of the images that he captured in day-to-day life. The lush green village side scenes, ocher coloured huts and the presence of natural beauty in his work are perfect examples of personal observation transformed onto canvas in soft manner. He mostly paints the realistic and impression paintings. He successfully transmits his inner feelings and establishes a dialogue between the viewer and his art.

He always tries to define beauty in the form of different landscape paintings and share them with the viewers and try to make others realize and ponder about the nature's beauty. Whether landscape or seascape Amin's artworks give pleasure to the tired eyes. His paintings depict immense tranquility, peace and serenity of life, his canvas soothes the eyes and gives you an inner feeling of calmness. He works in detail, he takes care of every tiny aspect of the scene he is about to paint. One can witness it in his landscape and rural scenes.
Zafar Mahmood portrays urban landscape imagery while a few of the paintings have lush green landscapes. Village life fascinates him a lot. He creates diversity of images with bold colours and confident strokes in his recent collection of paintings.

His paintings are visually appealing. He paints the dwellings of villages with emotions and fervour and produces fresh and unique compositions which are skillfully created.

The architecture in G Abbas Kamagar paintings is used as pattern while the splashes of colours are controlled in compositions. Filling his canvas through the inspirations taken from nature Abbas uses coloured spots at different places in his works to create a movement.

He moves firmly into a more contemporary idiom where daring lines and bold colours replace the serious earth tones. The viewers can find a fresh trend and a new approach that actually draws them deeper into a fascinating world which is both visually appealing and meaningful.

Dr. Manzoor Ahmed successfully captures the aesthetics of the subject; the colour combinations along with perfect use of light and shadow enhance his paintings visual effects. He dealt with the subject very carefully.

He acquires finest details with accuracy in his paintings. His techniques and skills in the application of colour and form show his engagement with the surrounding location which creates a bond with his paintings. He works with a profound understanding of his theme and medium.

The effect of water and tall trees predominates with a changing tempo in the artworks of Saleem Akhter and Shakurallah. Their paintings depict pure natural beauty may that be landscape or seascape. Both the artists are influenced by the pure natural beauty of Mother Nature. The blooming flowers, trees and birds, boats and shallow waters are the main subject of their paintings. The soft and subdued colours of their paintings give a soothing look to the viewers.
