This device can perform faster - USB 2.0 - a solution for this really annoying notification

This was one of the most frustrating operating system behaviors I have ever encountered, and I could not find a solution anywhere. Figured it out through trial and error, so I am posting the solution here for anyone else tortured by this.

When Windows thinks you’re plugging a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1 or 1.1 socket, the system tray will popup a little message “This device can perform faster”. In my case, I have a keyboard, mouse, and printer plugged into a USB 1.1 Iogear KVM (switches the peripherals between two computers). Every time I switch between the two computers, I get the popup notification. It had my so batty, I stuck post-it notes over that part of my new LCD screen.

Googled around for an hour and only found a solution that works for XP via changing a setting in the device manager. This did me no good since my IT department admins the XP box (I can’t make any changes in the device manager), and the other computer is running Vista.

Okay, here’s the solution:

1) Right click on the system tray (where the clock is in the bottom right corner of the screen), and select “Properties” at the bottom of the menu.

2) Choose the ‘Notification Area’ tab and click on “Customize” as shown below.

3) Scroll to “Past Items”, and change the setting for “This device can perform faster” to “Hide” as shown below.

That should do it. It did for me.

Pandora for iPhone/iPod Touch is amazing

Almost too good to be true. Wouldn’t surprise me if someone were to make this illegal. Easily worth the $10 it cost me to upgrade the iPod Touch to v2.0. I just wish the $10 had gone to Pandora instead of greedy Apple. Too bad Pandora won’t play in the background while using other applications.

Consider:

After Federer prevented Pete Sampras from tying his record five consecutive Wimbledons, Borg telephoned Federer to thank him.
When Nadal was about to compete to tie Borg’s record of four straight French Open titles, Borg was the one person to go on record saying that Federer would make it a close final.
With Federer now competing to break the tie with Borg’s most precious record of consecutive Wimbledons, Borg goes on record to say that Federer is the third most likely to win the tournament, with Nadal and Djokovic each more likely to win. This after Federer, the defending champion (x5) won the tournament in Halle without dropping a set, recording his 59th consecutive grass court victory in that final

Could it be any more clear that Borg’s “predictions” amount to little more than pathetic mindgames aimed at preventing Nadal and Federer from surpassing his own accomplishments? Meanwhile, Brad Gilbert and Patrick MacEnroe, apparently both weak-minded, have jumped on the Borg wagon. The media, likewise, have been hypercritical of Federer. I’m not saying that Federer will definitely win. No one can maintain absolute dominance forever. However, to suggest that he is an underdog in this tournament is absolutely ridiculous.
