1.What is important to remember about radial bearings?
A turbine rotor is supported by two radial bearings, one on each end of the steam cylinder. These bearings must be accurately aligned to maintain the close clearance between the shaft and the shaft seals, and between the rotor and the casing. If excessive bearing wear lowers the he rotor, great harm can be done to the turbine.

2. How many governors are needed for safe turbine operation? Why?
Two independent governors are needed for safe turbine operation. One is an over speed or emergency trip that shuts off the steam at 10 percent above running speed (maximum speed). The second, or main governor, usually controls speed at a constant rate; however, many applications have variable speed control.

3. How is a fly ball governor used with a hydraulic control?
As the turbine speeds up, the weights are moved outward by centrifugal force, causing linkage to open a pilot valve that admits and releases oil on either side of a piston or on one side of a spring-loaded piston. The movement of the piston controls the steam valves.

4. What is meant by critical speed?
It is the speed at which the machine vibrates most violently. It is due to many causes, such as imbalance or harmonic vibrations set up by the entire machine. To minimize damage, the turbine should be hurried through the known critical speed as rapidly as possible. (Caution, be sure the vibration is caused by critical speed and not by some other trouble).

5. How is oil pressure maintained when starting or stopping a medium-sized turbine?
An auxiliary pump is provided to maintain oil pressure. Some auxiliary pumps are turned by a hand crank; others are motor-driven. This pump is used when the integral pump is running too slowly to provide pressure, as when starting or securing a medium-sized turbine.

6. Besides lubrication, what are two functions of lubricating oil in some turbines?
In larger units, lube oil cools the bearings by carrying off heat to the oil coolers. Lube oil in some turbines also acts as a hydraulic fluid to operate the governor speed-control system.

7. Do you stop cooling-water flow through a steam condenser as soon as the turbine is slopped?
You should keep the cooling water circulating for about 15 mill or more so that the condenser has a chance to cool down gradually and evenly. Be sure to have cooling water flowing through the condenser before starting up in order to prevent live steam from entering the condenser unless it is cooled. Overheating can cause severeleaks and other headaches.

8. How can the deposits be removed?
Water soluble deposits may be washed off with condensate or wet steam.
Water insoluble deposits are removed mechanically after dismantling the turbine.
Experience shows that water soluble deposits are embedded in layers of water-insoluble deposits. And when the washing process is carried out, water soluble parts of the deposit dissolve away leaving a loose, friable skeleton of water-insoluble deposits which then break loose and wash away.

9. How can the fatigue damage on high-pressure blades be corrected?
Fatigue-damage on high-pressure blades arises due to vibration induced by partial-arc admission. This can be corrected by switching over to full arc admission technique.

10. What is the function of EGR valve ?
EGR means Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The main function of EGR is to control NOx emission from the engine. At elevated temperature (during long run & full condition)if due to some reasons engine gets heated up beyond certain level… it produces NOx emission. In order to avoid this pollution , we have to control the temperature rise inside the cylinder. This can be achieved by mixing some amount of exhaust gas with intake air. By doing this the temperature inside the combustion chamber is reduced. And NOx is controlled.

11. What is the difference between Critical speed & Whirling speed?
In Solid mechanics, in the field of rotor dynamics, the critical speed is the theoretical angular velocity which excites the natural frequency of a rotating object, such as a shaft, propeller or gear. As the speed of rotation approaches the objects natural frequency, the object begins to resonate which dramatically increases system vibration. The resulting resonance occurs regardless of orientation.
Whirling Speed is due to the unbalanced forces acting on a rotating shaft.

1. Red Chili Powder

Red chili powder or cayenne pepper (paprika) adds a spicy kick to Indian food and is known as the “king of all spices”. Chili is the dried ripe fruit of the genus Capsicum. It is believed to be native to South America, first introduced to the Indians from the Portuguese in the 15th-century. Today it is used in the infamous Indian curry dishes.

2. Black Cardamom,

Black cardamon is known for its smoky, pungent aroma and is used in many Indian dishes. It is the dried ripe fruit from the capsules of the cardamom plant, often referred to as the “queen of spices” because of its pleasant fragrance and taste. Different from the green cardamom, the black cardamon is used in the preparation of Dals, Curries, Biryanis and the famous Indian Garam Masala or ‘hot spices’ which not only include Black Cardamon but bay leaves, black pepper, black cumin, cinnamon, cloves, mace and nutmeg. The pods are released just before adding to a dish. Cardamon oil is a precious ingredient in many food preparations including Indian beverages. Cultivation is concentrated in the evergreen forests of western Ghats in south India. It is grown on a smaller scale in other countries as well. It is used in both whole and ground form. Cardamom oil has applications in flavoring processed foods, cordials, and liquors and in perfumery and in Ayurvedic medicines (a traditional Indian medicine system popular in Southeast Asia).

3. Asafoetida

Asafoetida, strangely known as ‘the devil’s dung’ is known for its pungent odor. It is the dried latex or gum exuded from the living underground rhizome or tap root of several species of Ferula, a perennial herb which grows in India (although it originated in the Americas). It is prepared from the sap of a plant which is dried into a grayish resin and is quite hard and needs to be broken down with the help of a hammer or other tool. It is used as a condiment and flavoring agent in Indian food. It gives the unique flavor to Rasams and Sambars of southern India. It is grown in Kashmir and in some parts of Punjab in India but India is supplied with it mainly from Afghanistan and Iran. There are two main varieties both of which are acrid and bitter and give off a disagreeable unpleasant odor due to its sulphur compounds. It is mixed with starch and gum in a block or in powder form. It is used in flavoring Curries, Sauces and Pickles.

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is derived from the bark of a hardy, evergreen tree and is native to India. What is known as the ‘true cinnamon’ or Sri Lanka Cinnamon is the dried inner stem bark of the Cinnamomum Verum. They are grown as bushes and are ready for harvesting after two years of growth. Cinnamon oil comes from the bark of the tree. Cinnamon sticks are used in Indian cooking for the preparation of Pulao (Pilaf), Biryanis and certain curries. Chips or ‘quills’ are scraped peel of the inner bark of the mature cinnamon shoot which is dried in the sun and then in the shade. The fragrance is sweet, earthy and a warm enjoyable taste. It is also used as a powder in cooking as well as in dried sticks.

5. Tamarind

Tamarind paste is made from the ripe fruit of the tamarind tree, an evergreen. It is a tree that originates from Madagascar and the tamarind pulp is used in many culinary Indian creations. The tamarind kernel powder is extensively used too. It is used as a condiment in India and is widely cultivated there and in other semi-tropical regions with low rainfall. It has a sour and acidic taste and is used in south Indian dishes to give taste. It usually comes in a concentrated paste commercially.

6. Curry leaves and Curry powder

Curry leaves come from a tree and curry is used as a spice to add fragrance and flavor to southern Indian dishes. It is a spicy ingredient and can be used dried or fresh and is grown throughout southern India. Curry is often used as a sauce in many Indian recipes and is also used to marinate tandoori and tikka kabobs.The curry tree is used not only for its leaves, but the bark and roots are known as a tonic and a stimulant. Research indicates that curry has existed since before the birth of Christ. Curries have taken shape around the world since then with each country creating it in their own unique way.

7. Mustard Seeds

Mustard seeds come from an annual herb cultivated as an oil seed crop, vegetable, condiment and spice. They are either tiny black, pale yellow, white or brown balls that release a full flavor when roasted. After being heated they ‘pop’ and release a rich flavor. They are used in south Indian cooking as part of the Tadka (a cooking technique where you cook whole seeds in oil to heighten flavor). The yellow/white mustard is native to southern Europe whereas brown mustard is from China and was then introduced to northern India. Black mustard seeds come from the southern Mediterranean region but are cultivated around the world. Powders are also used in mayonnaise and leaves of the mustard plant are used either dried or dehydrated for taste in recipes as well. Ground mustard is used for flavor in Bengali fish curries.

8. Cumin (Jeera)

Cumin, known as ‘Jeera’ in India, can be purchased as whole seeds or in powder form and comes from a dried, white fruit on an annual herb that is a tropical plant grown in many parts of the world. The seeds are bitter and have an aromatic odor. It is indigenous to northern Egypt, Syria, the Mediterranean region, Iran and India. It is also grown in Mexico, China, Sicily and Malta. Cumin is used in Indian cooking as a flavoring agent in things like curry powders, seasonings of breads, cakes and cheese, and as a condiment. It is also used in many native dishes of Central and South America. Used in small quantities in most dishes it merely enhances the dish further. It is found to date from the second millennium B.C. All Indian curries and dals include it in small quantities. Often the cumin seeds are heated and roasted which gives off its robust flavor and aroma. Cumin can be used in powder form but is best used with the seeds.

9. Black pepper

Black pepper is the world's most traded spice. Dried ground pepper has been used since antiquity for both its flavor and as a medicine. Black peppers are native to India and are extensively cultivated there and elsewhere in tropical regions. Currently Vietnam is by far the world's largest producer and exporter of pepper.

10. Turmeric

Turmeric is an Indian spice, bright yellow in color and is used in both south and north Indian cooking. It is derived from a plant native of India that is part of the ginger family. It is made from the boiled, dried, cleaned and polished roots of the turmeric plant. In medieval Europe it became known as Indian saffron and was far more expensive in its day than the saffron spice of today. Turmeric is used primarily in Kashmiri dishes. Used for flavor and color, it is a principal element in curry powder.

In cases where more than one student have got the same marks in the common merit list, the inter-se merit among such students shall be determined in the order of preference as specified below:

i) Marks out of 50 in Mathematics or Botany or Biology
ii) Marks out of 50 in Physics
iii) Marks out of 50 in Chemistry
iv) date of birth - eldest first

1. Eligibility
A pass in the Higher Secondary Course (10+2) or any other examination recognized as equivalent there to and fulfilling the following requirements.Candidates who have not studied X, XI and XII standards in Tamil Nadu should produce the certificate of permanent residence in Tamil Nadu in the prescribed format (enclosed with application) from competent authorities for considering the application.

As 5% of total seats are exclusively reserved for candidates under Vocational Stream, they are not considered under general merit and any of the other reservation categories, if any.

1. AGE LIMIT
Candidates should not have completed the age of 21 years on the first day of July of the admission year for all the courses. However, for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes there is no age limit
2. RESERVATIONS
i) The communal reservation will be followed as per the Government orders at the time of admission.
ii) Ten percent seats are filled by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi through a National Level Entrance Examination
iii) Certain number of seats are reserved for the following categories, as prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
a. Ex-servicemen
Six Seats in B.Sc.(Ag.), One seat in B.Sc.(Hort) and One Seat in B.Tech. (Agrl. Eng.) Degree Programme is reserved for Son/Daughter of Ex-servicemen. The applicant should possess minimum qualifying marks and should attach proof along with application.
b. Differently Abled
Three Percent Seats are reserved in the Undergraduate Degree Programs for differently abled candidates. The applicant should possess minimum qualifying marks and should attach the certificate as prescribed. The Age is is relaxed upto 26 years.
c. Freedom Fighter
One Seat is reserved in B.Sc.(Ag.) for the descendents of Freedom Fighter. The applicant should possess minimum qualifying marks and a certificate to for this should be furnished from Tahsildar of the respective Taluk.
d. Eminent Sports Person
Four Seats in B.Sc.(Ag.) and one seat in B.Sc.(Hort.) are reserved under sports quota for eminent sports persons. The applicant should possess the minimum qualifying marks and attach proof along with copies of the certificate issued by the Sport Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Certificates from National State District and Divisions will be considered on the order of merit and hence copies of all relevant certificates should be attached.

They can obtain the application by submitting a written requisition enclosing two sets of attested Xerox copies of the Community Certificate and the Plus Two Mark Sheet. Application can also be downloaded from www.tnhealth.org or from www.tn.gov.in and submitted with the Demand Draft as applicable.

Those applying under Special Categories [(i) Children of Freedom Fighters (ii) Children of Ex-Servicemen (iii) Eminent Sports Persons (iv) Physically Challenged persons] should submit Special Category Application along with Common Application form. For each Special Category, one application has to be submitted. Those applying under ‘Physically Handicapped Category’, have to enclose the certificate as specified in the Prospectus.
