Web Application Proxy and ADFS configuration

ADFS configuration is quite a complex section in which one small mistake leads to hours of troubleshooting as well as its respective resolution.

We are facing some weird error while configuring the web application proxy in Windows Server 2012 R2:

ADFS proxy could not be configured. Unable to retrieve proxy configuration data from the federation Server.

While troubleshooting the issue, we found one Microsoft KB which talks about this update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3013769

Most probable cause would be: This issue occurs when finding DRS objects times out. The Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) service tries to connect to every global catalog in the forest during DRS discovery. However, the DRS objects cannot be found because DRS is not initialized. Therefore, AD FS proxy times out.

But that didn’t resolves the issue in my case so I tried it from the scratch with the help of http://thesharepointfarm.com/2014/02/sharepoint-and-the-web-application-proxy-role/ - which resolves the issue for me but still didn’t clear as what went wrong!

Another step of troubleshooting that you can check is to check the certificates on ADFS Proxy.

Sharepoint 2013 Multi Tenant Setup

Multi-tenancy refers to the ability to manage and partition data of sites and otherwise shared services or software in order to accommodate multiple tenants. This is in contrast to running multiple instances of a service, or setting up separate hardware.

In Microsoft products and technologies, multi-tenancy of services creates a hosting environment wherein server farm resources are maximized. Before learning about hosting environments, it is important to understand the services architecture.

Email Library missing – SharePoint Online / Office 365

Few days before, one of our users has reported an issue that some of the business experts wanted to use the email functionality for a document library but not able do so as the link is missing or seems to be not visible due to permissions issue!

Farm attributes:

1. Windows 7 client

2. SharePoint Online / Office 365

I have started my analysis towards the issue and found out that’s it’s a expected behavior. What is meant by expected, refer below for the complete explanation.

Why the option is not there?

The option is not available in Office 365 due to concerns that every document library alias will create a contact in AD, which has some security, performance and traffic related implications.

Alternative:

You can alternatively use Office 365 groups to post attachments (of course email-enabled). The attachments are either distributed to group members via email or kept in OneDrive for Business with a link sent instead.

What it recommends:

Mail-enabled lists are not available with SharePoint Online. Mail-enabled lists create contact objects in AD. Since SharePoint Online is a multi-tenant environment, this functionality would cause a large increase in traffic, which in turn would cause performance issues for all customers.

This functionality is currently disabled due to the performance concerns, as well as security, data requirement, legal compliance and scalability concerns.

The specified module 'Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell' was not loaded

Problem description:

When I open the SharePoint Online Management Shell it immediately displays the following error before I can type anything.

Error message:

Import-Module: The specified module 'Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell' was not loaded because no valid module file was found in any module directory.

Attributes:

· Windows 7 machine

· Office 365 environment

· Windows Management Framework 3.0

· .Net 4.0

Resolution:

It’s quite easy as changing the account, yes you heard it right J

Try one of the following steps and your issue will be resolved!

Either

1. Make sure you run the SharePoint Online Management shell as an Administrator.

2. Reinstalled and removed both the x86 and x64 management shells.

SharePoint 2010: Upload multiple photos is missing

If you wanna upload multiple photos or suppose multiple documents and if the option is missing then don’t worry as it’s a simple issue and resolution too.

Problem description:

Upload multiple photos is missing in upload dialog box

Resolution:

Upload Multiple Files is missing when you don't have any local Office clients installed. Here's the list of requirements to see that option:

1. The 32 bit version of Internet Explorer. The 64 bit version does not support it and neither do other, non IE, browsers.

2. The STSUpld.UploadCtl IE add-in must be enabled.

3. Office 2003 /Office 2007 / Office 2010 / Office 2013 or newer on the client

4. Client integration will need to be enabled for the web app.

Why it's required? Here is the reason- There is an ActiveX control that is used to support multiple file uploading - that ActiveX control is installed with office.

That’s it – once you install any of the client (i.e. any office version as listed above – step#3) then your issue will be resolved.

If you upload an image to a SharePoint Online picture library then you will get the following:

TypeError: Unable to get property 'indexOf' of undefined or null reference

It’s difficult to troubleshoot the issue but let me jot down the a quick workaround steps so you don’t have to waste your time J

Workaround: Turn on Compatibility View for all webpages

1. Right-click the window header and select Command Bar.
2. Click Page, and then click Compatibility View Settings.
3. Check the "Display all pages in Compatibility View", and click Close.

It seems that this is a known issue but I don’t have a concrete fix at this moment but will definitely share once I find it. Thanks for reading this article!

SharePoint and office are the most used components when you start working in an office. Almost 90% of our documents are in office compatibility so it’s quite obvious that they have to work with SharePoint without any issues and if you start facing issues then it’s quite annoying!

Environment details:-

· SharePoint 2010

· Office 2013

· Windows Server 2008 R2

Here is the error message that I am talking about:

The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons:

- A datasheet component compatible with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation is not installed.

- Your Web browser does not support ActiveX controls.

- A component is not properly configured for 32-bit or 64-bit support.

Resolution:

To resolve this you need the following data connectivity component installed: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23734

Although this says 2007 and therefore looks like an odd install in relation to 2010 SharePoint it resolves this data sheet issue.

Imp Notes:

The Edit in Datasheet view functionality in SharePoint Server 2010 is not supported if you install 64-bit Office 2013 client. The Edit in Datasheet functionality is available if you install 32-bit Office 2013 client.

Hello Guys, Good to have myself back again to this SharePoint world. It’s been a quite busy hectic time from last few months but here is my article on so called problem of threshold limits with respect to SharePoint lists.

SharePoint Online delivers the powerful features of SharePoint without the associated overhead of managing the infrastructure on your own.

Everybody is aware that SharePoint lists as has certain limit to accumulate number of items so the question is -

Can i increase list item threshold view in SharePoint online, which by default is 5000? In other words, this error message-

"The number of items in this list exceeds the list view threshold, which is 5000 items" error when you view a SharePoint Online list in Office 365 Enterprise”

Answer would be – No but there is some workaround by which we can play with this limit.

How? Here is the way-

To work around this issue, split the items into multiple lists so that no list exceeds 5,000 items. Because you'll be unable to view the list items beyond the limit of 5,000 items, you must configure metadata-based navigation so that you can access all the list's contents.

To enable metadata-based navigation, follow the "Enable Metadata Navigation and Filtering" and "Configure Metadata Navigation" sections of the following Microsoft website:

It is required to have SP2 installed for the base product and all installed language packs to install May 2015 CU for SharePoint 2010.

Problem description: Missing Term Store.

Error Message: The required feature is not enabled for this column type.

Let me tell you another interesting thing that I have explored it while doing the troubleshooting: If you try to find out any feature possibility based on this then you will not find anything. This is a hidden gem and you need to enable the functionality via PowerShell.

So Solution / Resolution is very simple here-

Enable-SPFeature –id "73EF14B1-13A9-416B-A9B5-ECECA2B0604C" –Url <URL>

Root cause: based on my research and troubleshooting did then I found out that this is a problem with the site which is having blank site template!
