I came across a very interesting video that shows viewers how to create a self contained River tank ecosystem that would be suitable for housing Newts, Frogs or even water loving lizards. I would definitely lean more towards frogs and newts after seeing this set up as it’s extremely aquatic.

The video was created with setting the tank up for classroom use in mind, but I’m sure anyone wanting to set up a home river tank would find this video and the listed supplies useful as well.

Here have a look and tell me what you think. I’m sure some of you crafty folk could make this on your own, but it appears that molded rock wall is something that can be purchased.

Ever heard of leopard gecko patterns like the Ruby-Eyed Tremper Albino morph? What about the Patternless Mack Super Snow? Or the Tangerine Super Hypo Carrot-Tail? You might not have heard of any of these, but they’re out there and available for you to purchase. Even as you read this, professional leopard gecko breeders are hard at work producing ever more amazing morphs (that is, visually distinct leopard geckos) for people to fall in love with and buy.

But where did this all begin? How is it done? And was there a time when this little leo actually looked kind of like a leopard making it the only option for the wannabe reptile owner? Read on to find out more…

Housing

A good rule of thumb for Red Eye Tree Frogs is 5 gallons per frog. A ten gallon tank is perfect for a pair of frogs. Flip it on its end to make the tank taller, Red Eye Tree Frogs are arboreal and like to climb. The cage top should be half glass, half screen to keep humidity up.

The best way to feed your leopard a calcium supplement is to gut load its feeder insects with a high-calcium diet. Blend together a sauce made from any of: dandelion greens; watercress; collard greens; mustard greens, and/or endive. Be sure to include both the juice and the pulp. Feed this to the feeder insects during the period 24-48 hours prior to feeding them to your leopard.

You want humidity in the 60-80% range. This can be achieved by using potting soil, orchid bark, sphagnum moss as a flooring substrate. These substrates help hold moisture in. You can also do regular misting, or close off part of the cage top to hold in moisture. A good rule of thumb is, if the glass has water beading on it, its to moist. Adjust as needed. It is a good idea to mist your frogs a few times a week.

They will require branches and plants to climb and have hidey holes.

Diet

Red Eye Tree Frogs are insectivorous. So a diet of crickets, mealworms, fruit flies, and just about any insect that fit in their mouth is fair game. I recommend gut loading anything you give them, as this adds to the nutritional value of your insects. Provide them a large water dish with fresh water, they rehydrate themselves by soaking in the dish. Use ONLY distilled water, or filtered and De-chlorinated water. Chemicals in tap water can kill your frog.

Today

With all the leopard gecko patterns currently available, what’s left to do – are there still any ‘holy grail’ morphs that no one has been able to breed yet? The answer (at the time of writing in 2010) is yes, absolutely. Chief among the morphs that everyone wants to develop are an all-black morph and a true all-blue morph. There’s probably no doubt that these morphs will be achieved soon…so start saving your pennies!

Turtles pets can be a great addition to your family and provide hours upon hours of enjoyment.Having relayed that it is imperative to do some homework up front before you decide to purchase a turtles or turtles pets. There are many different types of turtles which can be very different in size and or personality. It is very similar to choosing which breed of dog or cat is right for you.

Always take into thought before you buy time you have to clean, amount of space you have, age of the owner, how much money you can spend on your turtle, state laws, and many other things.

A lot of turtle owners have started out with a little turtle in a five or ten gallon fish tank only to realize that the turtle would soon get too big for this tank and need a bigger one. Some types of turtles will remain fairly small which enables them to live comfortably in a forty gallon fish tank, but never less. This is why it is essential to find out how big your turtles pets full grown adult size is before you buy it so that you can plan ahead.

The movie Rocky shows the main character having some small turtles as pets, and this is not the proper way to care for them. The wife of Rocky in the movie worked at a pet store and he had two small turtles in too small of a glass bowl in his apartment. They had very little water to swim in, no UVB light, no heat lamp, and way to small of an enclosure. I won’t get into full detail of how to care for your turtles pets in this article, but if you would like to learn right away, just click the link on the right side of this page.

Unless you can prove that you are a university or a research facility, most states won’t allow you to own a turtle less than 4 inches in length. The reason for this is that it is believed that there is a greater risk of contracting salmonella from these smaller types of turtles. Years and years ago some small children had contracted salmonella from putting these smaller turtles in and around there mouths. That is another reason why it is so important to have proper supervision around turtles pets.

Use sound judgment and keep your hands clean each time after handling your turtles pets or any other part of the turtles habitat and you should remain problem free. If you want to start off the right way and learn the basics BEFORE you buy your turtle……..or if you got it and it’s too late…..click one of the links on this page and start moving in the right direction to owning turtles pets.

Australia may be home to some of the world’s most venomous snakes, but don’t let that worry you if you are considering an Australian python as a pet.

Pythons are not venomous, and by their nature, are quite docile and placid. Australian pythons, in particular, make great pets. The most common sort of pet python is the carpet python (named after the pattern on their skin). Carpet pythons don’t get as large as some other snakes and the largest an Australian one can get is around 11-13 feet.

Carpet pythons are preferred by beginner snake owners due to their placid nature, although they may be a bit temperamental when they are young. Pythons are like living sculptures, they have a few basic requirements but are not in need of continual attention or pampering!

In terms of diet, an Australian python will quite happily live off a simple regime of mice – and as they get bigger – rats. For the python’s safety, as well as being humane to the rodents, it’s recommended you only feed your python dead mice & rats. Believe it or not, a cornered rat can actually hurt your pet snake, so do the right thing and avoid live food.

Apart from their simple diet, pythons are also tropical animals and require a heated habitat to live in and a source of fresh water. That, in a nutshell, is the basic requirements for a pet python.

Pythons don’t interact with humans much in the wild, so you will need to handle them regularly so that they become aquainted with pople. Although they can be easily frightened – and therefore a little “snappy” – when they are young, as they grow they will become more confident and used to being man-handled.

These basic requirements are just about all you’ll need to care for a pet python. They’re beautiful animals and you’ll always be able to enjoy a little bit of “wild nature” in your own home. While they won’t fetch balls or do tricks, there can be something really calming about the graceful movement of a python.

Bear in mind that while Australian pythons are now kept as pets all over the world, if you are in Australia (or some other countries) you will require getting a license (permit) to own one. These permits are not expensive, but you must remember to keep your log book up to date.

Why do people choose reptiles for pets? Though they will not reward you with tail wagging or lap purring, snakes, spiders or amphibians are considered very exotic and popular pets; such preferences would explain the large number of pet snakes for sale present in pet shops or online. These are pets that are very easy to take care of, requiring just a small tank with low maintenance. The calm disposition of snakes and their intricate patterns often influence their choice over fish, for instance by home owners who want to bring a new and unique element to their family. Not all pet snakes for sale make a good match for anybody.

If you seriously consider to take a pet snake, there are a few details you should know in order for the animal to be happy and healthy too. Go for younger pet snakes for sale since they make transportation and handling piece of cake, plus, if the pet is with you from its first month of life, the connection between you is going to be special. Adult pet snakes for sale are usually given away by their owners because of the scarcity of means to look after them when relocating or in a new residence. Poisonous snakes as pets are too dangerous to grow, and you won’t find any shop to sell you such species.

Previously to the selection from various pet snakes for sale, learn about the breed peculiarity, find out how big they grow, what mating needs they have and which is the most convenient way to keep them. Prepare the tank to meet your new friend before bringing it home, so that it may feel comfortable from the beginning. There are many places where to find pet snakes for sale. A good example here is the case of animal rescue organizations and shelters that have to give animals for adoption if their release in the wild is not an option. Pet owners who are looking for reptiles are not that common given the fact that so many people suffer from snake phobia, and few snakes find new homes under the circumstances.

Pet snakes for sale are also available with reptile breeders; these business owners usually advertise in classifieds and on personal web pages. Forum members could help you locate a reptile breeder close to your home, but you need to have a thorough look online. Really great purchases can be made from pet owners who have given time and patience to grow their pet. Such pet snakes for sale will also be given a personality description if you ask for one.

There are more than 2,700 snakes varieties spread all over the world in temperate and warm climates; the only part of the globe where snakes cannot live is Antarctica. Snakes vary in size from a few centimeters to more than nine meters in the case of the anacondas or the pythons. Poisonous snakes are a minority in this incredibly large reptile family, but their toxic poison is so powerful that it could kill a human being within a few minutes. Chronological research indicates that, the history and origins of snakes are lost in the Cretaceous period, some 150 million years ago, when snakes are assumed to have evolved from a lizard and changed their living habitat.

Some modern species still carry primitive distinctive marks, this is the case with pythons and boas that still carry vestiges of hind limbs, which only make us think of a past when snakes were more lizard-like than they are today. Snakes or serpents making the subject of symbolic creations and being widely illustrated in the arts. Mankind hunted down or worshiped snakes throughout its history; yet, modern attitudes have changed towards snakes particularly under the emphasis of the ecological movements that insist on the importance of these creatures for the environment of the planet. And they couldn’t be more right.

Fascinating details in the lives of snakes indicate that there are more things to learn about the many existing species. Thus, a study of the colored patterns on the body of snakes indicates incredible differentiation details between individuals belonging to the same family. Then, snakes’ sensitivity to vibrations, the incredible sense of smell and even the reception of low frequency sounds make them pretty out of the ordinary. Infrared sensitivity and the ability to detect body warmth from the distance, causes further awe among snakes researchers.

Common habitats for humans and snakes are a reality, and people living in areas with a higher density of snake groups and sub-groups develop skills to distinguish between the dangerous or harmless specimens, and thus they reduce the risk of snakebites. Non-venomous snakes could also bite and injure one seriously when sensing danger, therefore, a healthy attitude towards such animals will save you a lot of trouble. Do not try to kill, catch or hunt snakes: they will never come after you for the sake of just biting. Be extremely cautious when keeping snakes as pets.

There are many different types of turtles, however no matter which type you get, you should be prepared for a decent amount of responsibility. A very important thing to remember when caring for a pet turtle is that they are known for Salmonella. To make sure your kids don’t get Salmonella you will need to make sure you clean your hands after being around them.

A turtle can make a great pet for both children and adults, as long as the turtle is properly cared for. It’s easy to confuse a turtle with a tortoise, but the best rule of thumb to go by is that turtles usually live in or near water whereas tortoises live on land, usually in sandy areas. Basic turtle care is quite easy for a child to perform, as long as an adult can see to the moderation of the temperature in the turtle’s housing.

Turtles are aquatic and need water in order to get their hydration. The shell needs to have time to dry every once in a while, which means you need to make sure you have them a area they can climb up on in order to get dry. A turtle aquarium is something that will take no time to make, but did you know you have to clean the tank every week or twice a week?

The reason you want to go to such effort to keep the turtle’s aquarium clean is that it can cut back on the likelihood of Salmonella growth. This is probably the most important aspect of turtle hygiene for both you and your family.

The caring for a pet turtle isn’t that hard and will be easy to pick up. You can find that caring for a turtle is easy and they love to eat. The turtle you buy from the pet store should never have a shell that’s soft. The caring of a pet is a large responsibility that you will endure, but it’s a great learning process to having more exotic pets.

One of the most popular types of tortoise is the Sulculta Tortoise. Yes, there is also the Galapagos Tortoise, but personally, one of our favorites is the sulculta. Sulculta Tortoises are the second biggest in the world. We have a sulculta as well as some other reptiles and snakes. We have tons of advice to give you. Do we label ourselves an expert? When it comes to caring for a pet tortoise, we sure do. Continue reading this article in order to learn what you need to do.

Sulculta tortoises are known for having a long lifespan. They actually have been known to outlive humans! If you want your tortoise to live a long time, you need to understand what responsibilities are included in his care. It is kind of bizarre to think that humans can pass colds on to tortoises. Unfortunately for a tortoise, such a cold could be deadly to him! They also are prone to developing “crust” in their eyes, so you must keep a look out for that.

You can gently handle them when they are young, but when they grow up, they are heavy and can be hard to handle. You can use a colorful edible flower, or a piece of fruit in order to lure them where you need them to be. When they are little, you can keep them in a vivarium, but the sides should not be too deep, because they need an air flow. You can feed them grass from outside, but you need to make sure there are no chemicals. You can also build cages outside for them, but you should always have a top over it, because there are other critters that prey on them. You may even have to have a heat source, depending on the temperature in your area.

When kept outdoors, they should be in areas where there is direct sunlight as well as shade. When you keep them indoors, you need artificial sunlight on them for fourteen hours a day. You can do this by using a full spectrum UVB light. Make sure you change the light routinely as it may appear to be working, but it’s not working like the sun does. Inside, you will need to have a basking light for the little guy. Tortoise care can be very fun and there are lots more stuff you need to know, such as the substrate (soil is best so they can burrow) and the other types of foods they can eat.

While raising a snake can be very rewardin, you must understand what responsibilities go into caring for a snake. You have to make sure that a pet snake is right for you and your family and that you have the facilities and time needed to be able to look after the snake. Snakes require a lot of attention, a regular diet and a regularly heated environment to be able to survive.

One of the most important things to do before buying a snake is to research the vast range of pet snakes available. If you have a specific breed of snake in mind, you’ll save yourself a world of hassle if you read up about the breed first. It could be quite a shock to discover the process of snake skin shedding if you aren’t prepared for the sight of it. Researching before you buy a snake will also let you know what kind and size of snake cage you will need to purchase, as well as any other necessary equipment. Snake care varies depending upon the breed of snake, so the way one cares for, say, ball pythons may be very different than caring for coral snakes.

Make sure that you set up the cage for the snake so that it resembles its natural habitat. Many snakes prefer the hot weather but there are some snakes that prefer the cold to the hot. You also have to take into consideration the aggressiveness of your snake so that you can fit the cage around it, by doing this it will be easier to maintain the cage and also to feed the snake.

Snakes are very primal in their nature, and there is no such thing as a fully domesticated snake. That’s why it’s important that you only feed your snake the food that it would naturally hunt in the wild. When faced with the option of live or pre-killed prey, it is a matter that you will have to decide upon yourself. Some snakes simply will not touch pre-killed prey, while others can learn to adapt to it. Feeding a snake live prey is definitely something you should prepare yourself for in the event that your snake refuses pre-killed prey. If you are able to use pre-killed prey, it is very important that you preserve the food either—usually in the refrigerator—sealed away from your family’s food.

You must also remember to keep your snake very well hydrated. You can achieve this by leaving a small bowl of water in the cage so that the snake can drink when it wants to. Also you have to keep a routine check on your snake to make sure that it does not catch any illnesses or that it is injured in any way.

If you’ve decided that you’re definitely prepared for snake-care responsibilities, you can find pet snakes for sale in your local pet shop, on the Internet, or in the classified ads section of your local newspaper.

There is this frog living in my grandma’s little bird house that has hole that go all the way through. My grandpa says he thinks it will die from the heat but I want to save it. A first I just used this little rubber fish thing to squirt water on him and he liked it but the water dried too quickly and most of the time I forgot about him. Then I tried to keep him but then I thought he might die if i keep him HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s not supposed to be in rehab it’s a wild tree frog that’s tiny!!!!

Tree frogs are very adaptive little creatures. It moved into the bird house to protect it from direct sunlight. I do not recommend that you do anything. Spraying water on it will heat it up faster. Think about when you are outside in the heat and then you spray water on yourself; it feels good for a moment (until the water evaporates) and then you are left feeling hotter.

Do not attempt to keep him. He will die in captivity. Plus it is very illegal to care for wildlife, even a simple tree frog, if you do not have the proper permits.

And if you need to move him again, please make sure your hands are wet before touching him. The salt on our hands and fingers burns their delicate skin.
