(2) A faculty who has not attended more than two ROTPs in this academic year.
Number of participants: Maximum 20 numbers.

Know AIDS for No AIDS

This year’s World Aids Day on December 1 was marked by a unique campaign, Know AIDS for No AIDS, organized by students of the Amrita School of Ayurveda.

The three-day campaign saw Amrita’s future Ayurvedic physicians put together an exhibition, screen a video documentary and invite experts for informative talks on the topic. A mime performance and an essay competition were additional highlights.

An estimated 5.7 million people live with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Over 12% youngsters aged 15- 24 are HIV+.

Participants learned these and other such facts as they followed the famous pop singer, Kelly Rowland on her journey, providing relief work in South Africa.

The video documentary showed an emotional Ms. Rowland pleading at a press conference. “I saw so many young people who are involved with the disease … the numbers of AIDS victims have to go down,” she stated, clearly moved to tears.

Highlighting the lives and dreams of AIDS victims, the documentary brought out their helplessness. The viewers learned that every 14 seconds a child was orphaned due to AIDS.

Of course, the dreaded disease affects millions not only in South Africa, but the whole world. In India, an estimated 2 million people are affected.

“As far as AIDS is concerned, ignorance is not innocence but a sin,” wrote Sreedevi V., who won the first prize in the essay competition. This future doctor felt that it was her moral duty to participate in the campaign.

Next year, Sreedevi will graduate with a bachelors’ degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Jyotilal, a practicing Ayurvedic physician and a scholar, delivered a lecture on Rajayekshma.

“Rajayekshma is an illustrated disease in our Ayurvedic texts that is similar to HIV/AIDS,” he told the audience, explaining the disease’s symptoms, phases, prescribed medical treatment and precautions.

“Like AIDS, body pain, energy loss, weight loss, vomiting, memory loss and loose motion are some of the symptoms experienced,” he added.

Dr. Jyotilal was presented a memento by Dr. Syamala B., Principal of the School.

The exhibition inaugurated on the first day reiterated AIDS prevention messages and highlighted the isolation that all AIDS patients experience. A mime performance about the negligence faced by HIV+ patients brought the three-day campaign to a close.

“As future doctors, we felt the need to awaken people to fight this preventable disease,” summed up Arun M., one of the key student organizers. “I am happy to say that we were able to do our part.”

Amrita Students Bring ABC Awareness to Communities

A team of students from the Amrita School of Ayurveda responded to their Chancellor’s call for Amala Bharatam by presenting a short skit highlighting the unique campaign’s message.

The students first presented the skit at the ashram while their Chancellor gave their darshan. Scores of visitors joined the ashram residents at the presentation.

Performed in three parts, the skit underscored the need for involvement from different sections of society, including villagers, women and students.

The skit opened with a group of youngsters carelessly spitting, urinating and throwing litter randomly, demonstrating a total lack

of awareness for their surroundings and the environment. A student interrupted them, speaking to them about the harmful effects of their actions.

“Our beloved Amma started the Amala Bharatam Campaign to ensure that Mother India becomes and remains clean,” he said.

Meanwhile, a person from the local Panchayat, unaware of the situation, listened in to the dialog between the student and the littering youngsters.

The second part highlighted the role of women in contributing to the success of any clean up drives. The littering youngsters, now reformed, and the member of the local Panchayat, urged a group of home-makers to join hands with them, to make the drive fruitful.

Already acutely aware of the need to clean up, the women shared their concerns with the audience. “Avoid using cars as much as possible to conserve energy and cause less pollution,” they underlined, while also explaining the harmful effects of burning plastic waste.

The final act saw everyone come together and move forward to clean Mother India.

The skit was presented again at the ashram on New Year’s Eve, with slight modifications and enhancements based on feedback received after the first performance.

The student team is now planning to present the skit in as many schools of Kollam District as possible. They will also perform on the road side wherever they go to collect trash.

“We want to make people aware of the goal of Cleaner India, Beautiful India as envisioned by our Chancellor Amma,” stated Arun Mohan, final year student of Ayurveda, who wrote the script.

“Chancellor Amma’s call should encourage one and all to return to a more natural and unpretentious way of life,” he added.

All Kerala Inter Ayurveda College Indoor Games Competition 2010 was held on 14th and 15th july at Govt.Ayurveda College ,Trivandrum. This tournament is consecutively being conducted in memory of COM.Ajay for 5 years .This tournament includes Carroms,Table Tennis & Chess as the events.This paves the way for 17 Ayurveda Colleges in Kerala to show there excellency in respective events .

The name Mohiniattam literally means ‘Dance of the Enchantress,’ and it does have a mesmerizing quality. The white and gold costume, arresting hairstyle and the highly graceful movements in medium tempo, contribute to this aesthetic effect. Mohiniattam is characterized by swaying movements of the upper body with legs placed in a stance similar to the plie position. The eyes play an important role in accenting the direction of the movement. Mention of Mohiniattam is found in some eighteenth century texts, but the practical aspect of the style was revived in the reign of Maharaja Swati Tirunal, a 19th century ruler who was a great patron of the arts. Under Swati Tirunal, Mohiniattam crystallized as a solo dance tradition with musical compositions set to the Carnatic style of music and a distinct repertoire. Later, in the twentieth century, the great poet Vallathol established the Kerala Kalamandalam to promote the arts of Mohiniattam and Kathakali. Over the past few decades, the repertoire of Mohiniattam has been developed and expanded by dedicated performers who have ensured that this beautiful dance style retains a distinct identityamong the classical dance styles of India. Apart from mythology, Mohiniattam contains a range of themes from nature.

METHIL DEVIKA

Devika has had the blessing of being trained by some of the most proficient teachers of classical dance. Devika received her initial tutelage in dance at the age of four from Kalaimamani S. Natarajan, a disciple of veterans Balu Bhagavathar and K. P. Kittappa Pillai. Guru Natarajan belongs to the illustrious family upholding the tradition of Mellattur Bhagavatha Mela Natakam in Tanjavur. Devika was also trained by Guru Vempatty Ravi at the Kuchipudi Dance Academy run by the legendary Padmabhushan Dr. Vempatty Chinna Satyam. Devika took her Masters degree in Kuchipudi at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkatta with a first rank and gold medal. Devika is trained in Mohiniyattom under Smt. Girija Chandran, student of Kalamandalam Kalyanikuttyamma and director, Regatta Cultural Society, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She also trained for a brief period under Kalamandalam Leelamma mastering the technicalities of the much-acclaimed Kalamandalam sampradaya of Mohiniyattom. She is associated with scholars like Dr. V.S. Sharma, Kavalam Narayana Panikker and Nelliyode Vasudevan Nampoothiri for their guidance in many facets of choreography

INTEGRATION OF TRADITIONAL HEALING SYSTEMS AT AMRITA >>

Amrita Samyoga, 2010, a seminar on “Traditional Systems of Ayurveda, Yoga and Nature Cure” was conducted in Amrita School of Ayurveda on 8th and 9th of July 2010.The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Prabhath, I. A. S., Chairman, NCRI, Hyderabad and shared his views on integration of different systems of medicine. Keynote address was given by Dr. C. R. Agnivesh, Principal, Nangelil Ayurveda Medical College on “Preservation of Traditional Systems of Medicines”. He stressed upon the need for change in the Ayurvedic researches sticking the Basic Principles of the science. Dr. Santhi Nair, Chairman, Institute of Nanoscience, expressed his views on the utility of nanotechnology, to increase the potency and public acceptance of Ayurvedic medicines. Dr. N. P. P. Namboothiri, Managing Director, Sreedhareeyam, delivered a lecture on Traditional Eye Care, in the management of common eye diseases. Yoga and Meditation demonstration session was also organized under the guidance of Swami Samarpanananda Saraswathi, Yoga instructor, Ettimadai. Dr. T. K. Siamalan, appreciated the contribution by Keraleeya Vaidyas in Balachikitsa, various methods for Antenatal and Postnatal Care was also mentioned. Dr. Siamalan also told “Karapan” is a common terminology used by Keraleeya Vaidyas to denote the various dermatological conditions found in children. Most of the traditional literature is recorded in Palm leaves. Preservation of Manuscripts is very important. Prof. Dr. Sam explained various methods to preserver and decode the information. The inaugural session was presided over by Br. Dr. Sankara Chaithanya. Dr. B. Syamala, delivered the welcome note and Dr. A. Nanda Kumar, expressed the Vote of Thanks. Around 700 delegates from over 12 Ayurveda colleges, from inside and outside the state, participated in the seminar. The seminar paved a way for the preservation protection and Propagation of Traditional Systems of Medicines.

3 DAYS WORKSHOP ON SAMSKRITA @AMRITA

“SAMSKRITA POSHINI” the active students club of the Dept. of Basic Principles of Ayurveda, AAMC, is organizing a workshop on spoken Sanskrit and Basic grammar learning between 16^th July to18th July, with the co-ordination of “SAMSKRITA BHARATHI” Kodangallur.

This camp aims at innovating keen interest among youth in learning Samskrit, and thereby enabling the students to speak and write Samskrit. By this, an opportunity is provided for moulding a path by which the students can stay close to our culture. Also, the fruitful knowledge in Samskrit will definitely help the students to use the Samhitas and their commentaries written in the Samhitas and addition of text books from the available manuscripts.

Amrita Puri: Amrita School of Ayurveda is conducting two days Global Ayurveda Seminar on traditional systems of Ayurveda, Yoga and Nature cure, on 8th and 9th of July 2010 in collaboration with NCRI- National council of Rural Institutes. Our nation is having grandeur heritage of various traditional systems of medicine that help in prevention as well as cure of disease. Maintenance of normal health; both physical and physiological are the main aims of such systems of medicine. However with the advancement in modern medical systems, these traditional systems are almost wiped away from the mainstream now. This is an attempt to revitalize such systems and to protect and preserve them so that it can be benefited for the future generation also. Eminent Scholars from the various parts of India and Abroad are presenting papers. The aim of the seminar is to provide platform for exploring the experience of such scholars and recording their knowledge so that it can be conveyed to new generation. All who are working in the respective field of specialty are eligible to participate in the seminar. There will be a nominal registration fee.
