Helps Prevent Gelling As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to crystallize. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting. While low-quality fuels may form wax crystals in temperatures as warm as 40ºF (4ºC), most fuels have a cloud point near 32ºF (0ºC). A Direct Jobber in Macomb, Ill. has been a firefighter in charge of fleet maintenance for 23 years.

The Macomb Fire Department generator at the main station is an Onan 150KW unit that is powered by a Cummins QSB 6.7 liter diesel. You’ll notice by my signature below that I am an employee of Chevron Global Lubricants. I am a training specialist and field engineer for our North American lubricants division. I originally worked for Amoco at the R&D facility before moving into marketing, and while in that role, Chevron bought our lubricants business right after I moved to Florida.
All in all, I have more than 34 years of experience in fuels and lubricants testing, development and tech service support.
I own three motorcycles that I either drive on the street or race. What I wanted to share with you today is my experience with my drag bike.
It is a Yamaha Roadstar Warrior. Originally built as a power cruiser, but now it is stretched, slammed and built to run on E-85 fuel and nitrous oxide. I have taken this bike from a fun street cruiser to a beast that wants to jump out from under me every time I snap the throttle.
The engine is putting out more than three times the horsepower it was originally built with, and with the highly oxygenated fuel, nitrous, and severe use, I have been battling cylinder and piston ring distress for a couple of years. Essentially, whenever I did a teardown, there was evidence of streaking of the Nikasil-lined aluminum cylinder, essentially a scuffing situation that is aggravated by the high cylinder pressures and fuel dilution.
Since Chevron does not make motorcycle oils, I have had to try many of the “other” different motor oils, all synthetic. To make a long story short, I should have read your white paper on motorcycle oil testing. It would have saved me at least three premature teardowns.
Bottom line — the AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle 20W-50 has completely solved my problems. I have been running it for over a year now, and compression and leakdown have stayed at the exact level as when the engine was freshly rebuilt. This weekend, I tore down the top end to try a new piston ring combination, and the cylinders had absolutely NO sign of streaking or other wear-related distress.
Also, all other clearances, including valve lash and valve guide and bearing have stayed the same. This is truly remarkable.
In my training endeavors, I run into a lot of end users who are high performance junkies just like me. I have no problem sharing my experience with the AMSOIL products.

Extreme cold can cause conventional motor oil, transmission fluid and gear lubes to thicken, starving moving parts of necessary lubrication. In many cases, thick motor oil prevents vehicles from starting. Cold, thick transmission fluid results in delayed or sluggish shifts and inadequate protection for bearings in the axle housing are splash-lubricated, conventional gear lubes that are too thick at cold temperatures can starve internal components of essential lubrication, which causes excessive wear and premature failure. Conventional petroleum lubricants thicken because they often contain paraffin's (wax). While modern refining techniques remove most of the wax from petroleum oil, some wax-like molecules remain. These wax-like molecules are soluble at ambient temperatures above freezing, but crystallize into honeycomb-like structure at lower temperatures and cause fluid circulation problems. At start-up, this can leave working parts unprotected while lubricants warm to a temperature that allows it to flow.

Most of us have watched one of the popular reality-TV shows involving fishing, mining, logging or trucking. Without fail, there seems to be some dramatic mechanical failure that keeps us in suspense during the commercial break. Failures involving hydraulic systems often happen in cold temperatures. Many of us can sympathize with the guy on the show; he’s shown lying under the equipment with no gloves on his hands, snow is falling and his jacket is covered in oil. The drama provides great entertainment, but also a great example of the significant time and money lost every year in hydraulic equipment operated in cold temperatures.

So why do these guys always end up facing hydraulic equipment failures in the middle of the winter? Most often it is due to poor maintenance, poor startup procedures and continued use of a cheap hydraulic fluid that gets too thick in cold temperatures.

Completing scheduled hydraulic system maintenance throughout the year can significantly reduce cold-temperature downtime. Unfortunately, tight schedules, remote job sites and the need to keep equipment running at all costs can mean that badly worn hoses, leaky seals and other maintenance items go unchanged for extended periods. The colder the ambient temperature gets the more likely a catastrophic failure of one of these weak points will occur, and poor-quality hydraulic oil may accelerate the failure.

Hydraulic oil must protect moving parts from excessive wear, keep the system clean and free from varnish and transmit energy to complete a number of different jobs such as moving mountains of dirt and cutting trees off at their bases. To do these jobs, it’s critical that the hydraulic oil stay within range for thickness regardless of the outside temperature. This is especially important during cold temperature starts, when damage and accelerated wear can occur quickly if the oil gets too thick.

Damage and wear can be caused by starving the inlet side of the hydraulic pump (pump cavitation). This can occur during cold weather when oil becomes so thick that the pump is unable to pull fluid from the reservoir fast enough for continuous lubrication supply. Instead, the pump pulls air, components become starved of lubricant and metal-to-metal contact occurs. Overly thick oil also contributes to pressure spikes that blow hoses, filters and other critical components.

To help prevent this condition, most equipment manufacturers include hydraulic oil viscosity recommendations in their operator manuals and will often recommend thinner oil for cold ambient temperatures. This is one way to help solve the problem, but we all know that synthetic lubricants provide a solution through higher viscosity index. High-viscosity-index synthetic hydraulic fluids remain much more fluid in cold temperatures while maintaining a protective layer of fluid in high temperatures. The higher the VI, the less the fluid’s viscosity will change due to temperature fluctuations.

The importance of this can be illustrated by comparing a cheap mineral oil with a high-VI synthetic hydraulic oil. Both oils have the same thickness of 32 cSt at 40°C (ISO 32). But, the synthetic hydraulic oil has a VI of 160 and the mineral-oil-based hydraulic fluid has a VI of 90. When both oils are cooled to 10°F, the low-VI mineral oil thickens much more than the high-VI synthetic oil. Even though the oils are classified as having the same ISO viscosity, the high-VI synthetic oil will flow much better at 10°F. This means better lubrication for the pump and less chance of a pressure spike, damaging cavitation or blowing neglected weak points in the system.

Bottom line: Fluids with a higher viscosity index provide better protection in cold temperatures than fluids with a lower viscosity index.

On the other end of the spectrum, hydraulic oils need to fight varnish and sludge buildup most often associated with high-temperature, high-pressure industrial environments. Not all hydraulic oils are designed to provide effective resistance to varnish and sludge in these environments, and varnish and sludge are directly responsible for sticking valves and other operational issues. As temperatures increase, hydraulic oils thin out. In excessive temperatures, some do not provide the required oil thickness to adequately protect against wear. Additionally, oils not formulated correctly for these extreme applications allow varnish to form after continual operation at high temperatures, and sensitive operationally controlled valves begin to malfunction. Just like motor oils, not all hydraulic oils are created equal, and that is especially evident in cold-temperature applications.

AMSOIL synthetic hydraulic oils can greatly reduce cold-weather problems. They also provide outstanding oxidation resistance for longer fluid life and significantly better resistance to harmful varnish that plagues many hydraulic systems operating in hot industrial environments. The development of new sources of energy – at the state level – will be the big idea for 2013.
Whether there is a grand bargain, a petite bargain, or no bargain at all on ways to decrease the national debt and avoid the fiscal cliff, one thing is clear: The American spirit will not be dampened by the inability of elected and appointed officials in Washington to get the economy moving.
Power, in the form of innovation and ideas, will shift from the nation’s capital to the capitals of the 50 states. Governors do not have the authority to print money and 43 states have laws that require Governors to submit budgets that are in balance, so states are looking for ways to generate revenue without raising taxes which would only serve to drive businesses out.
The 21st century gold rush is shale containing oil or natural gas. Huge deposits have been discovered around the nation, instantly adding jobs – not just at the wellhead, but in the towns that surround the field where downtowns long abandoned are sprouting new stores to sell shoes, cut hair, and supply groceries to the oil and gas community.
Over the past four years, the ability to profitably recover oil and gas from shale deposits has turned natural gas from a closely guarded resource to an abundance that ranges from a 100 to 150 year supply depending upon the study.
Now, we need to create demand. The most efficient way to do that is to move our fleet of heavy-duty trucks from diesel that is largely imported from OPEC to natural gas that is produced in North America.
Most over-the-road 18-wheelers run the same routes on a regular schedule. Already there are private relationships being forged between truck stop operators and LNG or CNG suppliers to provide refueling facilities along heavily traveled Interstate Highway routes. Every state has an Interstate Highway – that’s one of the ways President Eisenhower got the approval to build the system back in the 1950s.
Every Governor will want to get in on the new boom – natural gas – by enticing truckers to use routes through their states; by committing to purchase state vehicles that run on natural gas, and by creating an environment that will generate revenues through commerce, not through taxes.
The move in both intellectual energy and fossil energy from Washington to the states – fueled by natural gas – will be the big idea for 2013.

Today, AMSOIL manufactures synthetic lubricants for virtually all automotive, power sports, commercial and industrial applications.

Oil, whether synthetic or petroleum-based, consists of molecular chains of hydrogen and carbon atoms, referred to as hydrocarbons. Petroleum crude oil is a thick, highly flammable dark-brown or greenish liquid with high energy densities. Many contaminating elements exist in this complex mixture of hydrocarbons, including sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and metal components such as nickel or vanadium. Petroleum crude oil is the raw material used for a wide variety of petrochemicals, including solvents, fertilizers, plastics and lubricants.
The oil refining process separates the various types of molecules in the oil by weight, resulting in a concentrated batch suitable for today’s uses such as gasoline, LPG, kerosene or base oils for lubricants. The chemical composition of conventional motor oil can vary substantially and depends on the raw crude oil refining process.
While petroleum base oils are refined, synthetic base oils are manufactured and can achieve a higher performance level. Synthetic oil is chemically engineered for a certain molecular composition with a tailored and uniform structure. Such fine-tuned control over the final molecular composition of synthetic oils is the key to the superior performance properties of these fluids. Designing molecular structures in a planned and orderly fashion results in molecules, and end-products, that are far more stable than their refined petroleum counterparts.

Why Am I an AMSOIL Dealer?

I thought I would tell the story of why I am an AMSOIL Dealer.

I purchased my 2003 Ford Diesel pick-up from my Mom in 2005 after my Dad passed away. After the purchase, I started to check out how much an oil change was going to cost me. When I realized that it needed 15 quarts of oil I quickly found out that it was going to cost me more than $75 just to change the oil.

I remembered something about AMSOIL being the a synthetic oil that I should check out. I did some research, and learned that if I used AMSOIL, I wouldn't need to change my oil but just once a year, or 25,000 miles, whichever came first. Some quick calculations showed me that the cost of just one oil change a year verses needing 5, was going to save me some money right away.

I did some more research and found out that people were reporting better fuel mileage when using AMSOIL. I thought, well if that is true, then I will save some more there too.

I changed the oil and put in a regular AMSOIL Air Filter on the truck. My fuel mileage went up 2 miles per gallon. Let me say, that I still only change the oil in my diesel once a year, and I'm now over 129,000 miles.

I've put AMSOIL in all the places that need fluid on the truck. I also use all the AMSOIL filters, including the AMSOIL/InJen Intake cold air intake kit. We use AMSOIL in both of our 2008 Ford Focus', and a 1999 Chevy Suburban also. Since we have 4 vehicles and 4 kids, I don't have time to spend every 5,000 miles under a vehicle changing oil. I usually find a day to knock them out at one time. Then at various times during the year, I get out the grease gun to keep things lubed up. We use AMSOIL grease in the trailer axles, small engine oil in the lawn mowers, 2-cycle oil in the chain saw and weed wacker. I used the AMSOIL Quickshot to clean out a weed wacker someone gave me because he couldn't get it to run after just a couple of uses. He went out and bought a new one, and I used a little Quickshot and it runs like a champ.

Never being one to want to pay full retail for anything, I decided to become a dealer. I knew a couple of others that wanted to buy also, so I thought why not be a dealer and help out my friends also. I never had any intention of growing my business. During my first year, I saw some people really making some good money as Dealers. I decided to make a little extra effort at it and saw some good results. I renewed for 10 years, and started making some effort. I grew my business by trying to be honest and helpful. I found out that if you return phone calls, people generally order. I make a little effort every day to learn my business and stay up to date.

As a dealer, I've grown my business, which has helped us pay some bills when things are tight. I've bought saddles for the horses, and extras for the kids. Most of those things wouldn't be possible without the extra income. I'm by no means getting rich of the AMSOIL income, but it does help off-set a few things.

The Warranty Secure symbol is designed to reassure consumers that simply using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in place of original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-branded lubricants, or practicing extended drain intervals when using AMSOIL lubricants, does not void new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranties. Simply put, if the lubricant did not cause the problem, the OEM warranty cannot be voided, period.

According to the Federal Trade Commission:

AMSOIL INC. of Superior, Wisconsin (“AMSOIL” or “AMSOIL INC.”) hereby warrants that, at the time of sale, its lubricants are fit for use according to the written recommendations of AMSOIL and in applications for which one or more of the specifications set forth in the product data bulletins and product labels are specified. AMSOIL further warrants its products to be free of defective materials, design and workmanship.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND GENERAL DISCLAIMER:

• This warranty only applies to AMSOIL lubricants for which AMSOIL does not offer a separate, specific warranty.

• This warranty applies only to AMSOIL lubricants that are packaged by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL packager and sold by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL Dealer.
• The liability of AMSOIL shall be limited to:
- Replacement of the defective lubricant.
- The cost, including labor and materials, to repair, or at the option of AMSOIL, to replace damaged components
lubricated by AMSOIL products according to AMSOIL recommendations.

AMSOIL’S LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF THE MANUFACTURE, SALE, DELIVERY, INSTALLATION, TECHNICAL DIRECTIONS OR RECOMMENDATION OF ANY LUBRICANT, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT, WARRANTY OR OTHERWISE, SHALL NOT EXCEED THE VALUE OF THE EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE PRODUCT(S) WERE USED. IN NO CASE SHALL AMSOIL BE LIABLE FOR SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGE OR LOSS OF OTHER PROPERTY OR EQUIPMENT, LOSS OF PROFITS OR REVENUE, COST OF CAPITAL, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LODGING, TOWING OR COST OF REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT. THE REMEDIES TO THE PURCHASER HEREIN ARE EXCLUSIVE.

WHAT THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER:

• AMSOIL lubricants used in mechanically deficient equipment. Examples of mechanically deficient equipment include
flawed or defective equipment due to abnormal operation, negligence, abuse, previous damage, or improper modification,
including use of components other than those from AMSOIL or AMSOIL aftermarket partners.
• Failure of equipment due to a pre-existing condition that is unrelated to the use of AMSOIL.
• Repair or replacement of equipment because of normal wear.
• Failure of equipment when AMSOIL lubricants are not used in strict accordance with either the written recommendations of AMSOIL INC. or the OEM for warranty coverage. The customer or user is solely responsible for determining a product’s merchantability or fitness (“suitability”) for a particular purpose and assumes all risks and liabilities when used other than in strict accordance with either the written recommendations of AMSOIL or the OEM for warranty coverage.
• AMSOIL lubricants used in any manned aircraft or aviation application.
• AMSOIL lubricants that have been used for the purposes of racing.
• AMSOIL lubricants that have been used without the written approval of AMSOIL INC. in applications where the OEM-required lubricant specifications do not match those stated by AMSOIL.
• AMSOIL lubricants contaminated after leaving the AMSOIL premises. Examples include contamination due to improper handling, re-packaging, storage or filtration and contamination from dirty dispensing equipment.
• Any allegedly defective AMSOIL lubricant for which a reasonable sample has not been preserved.
• AMSOIL lubricants that have been used in conjunction with any other product or additive that has not been authorized for use by AMSOIL INC.

WHAT YOU MUST DO TO MAKE A CLAIM:

• We require an eight (8) ounce representative oil sample taken from the failed equipment and put into a clean, dry container
for warranty claims filed with AMSOIL.
• You must first file a warranty claim with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) if the warranty is still in effect.
• You must provide a written copy of the OEM warranty denial if denial is based on use of an AMSOIL lubricant.
• You must notify AMSOIL INC. at (715) 399-8324 within 30 days of failure or alleged defect. In the alternative, you may mail a claim notice, along with the OEM denial to AMSOIL INC., ATTN: Technical Services, One AMSOIL Center, Superior, WI 54880, postmarked within 30 days of failure or alleged defect.
• You must keep the failed parts for inspection by AMSOIL INC. unless given to the OEM.
• You must additionally mail, at your expense, the following to AMSOIL INC., ATTN: Technical Services, One AMSOIL Center, Superior, WI 54880:
- The eight (8) ounce representative oil sample (see above).

Our mechanized society cannot function without lubricants. The dilemma is oil is both necessary for our life-style and potentially destructive to nature. Quite simply, we must select innovative, efficient products that will help solve our pollution problems.
The introduction of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in 1972 set all new standards for motor oil quality. AMSOIL lubricants are 100% synthetic. They are specially designed to protect engine components, reduce emissions, last longer, reduce fuel consumption and prevent environmental pollution. From the beginning, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils have out-performed conventional petroleum motor oils on all counts.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils resist chemical breakdown and sludging which keeps engines cleaner. They have been specifically designed not to oxidize, volatilize or shear back, resulting in a motor oil that lasts longer than conventional petroleum motor oils. While petroleum motor oil manufacturers recommend oil changes every 3,000 miles, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils protect engine components up to 35,000 miles or 1 year, dramatically extending oil change intervals.
AMSOIL PRESCRIPTION FOR PREVENTION:
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pollution Prevention Requirements, the first step in revitalizing a cleaner nation is pollutant source reduction.
AMSOIL accomplishes this by extending the interval between motor oil changes which can reduce the source of motor oil pollution more than eleven times.
Consider this: in 1993 an estimated 189.5 million motorized vehicles were on the road in the United States alone, and an estimated 700 million motorized vehicles were in operation throughout the world. If, by petroleum oil manufacturer’s recommendations, these vehicles have their oil changed every 3,000 miles on an average five-quart system, almost 1 billion quarts of used oil will be generated each month.
So are we drowning in oil? It is estimated at present that over 240 million gallons of oil are improperly discarded annually. Dumping 240 million gallons of oil is nearly the same as two Exxon Valdez spills each month.
How dangerous is used oil? Just one quart can produce a two acre oil slick. One gallon of oil can make one million gallons of water too foul to drink and 35 ppm of oil will kill fish. Improperly disposed used oil is dangerous.
Improperly dumped used oil seeps through landfills into ground water, disrupts bacterial digestion in sewer treatment plants and washes into lakes and harbors. At present, used motor oil is the largest single source of oil pollution in our nation’s waterways.
Certainly the first thing we can do is not create so much used oil to begin with, and we can recycle the used oil we have. Both synthetic and conventional motor oils can be recycled at any used oil recycling center.

Where Does All the Used Oil Go?

40%	is dumped on the ground or down the sewer.
21%	is thrown out with the trash, ending up in landfills.
6%	is burned.
19%	is reused for miscellaneous purposes.
14%	is recycled.

PREVENT BILLIONS OF QUARTS FROM BEING DUMPED
Most automobile manufacturers recommend oil drain intervals of 3,000 to 6,000 miles for petroleum motor oils. AMSOIL recommends up to a 35,000-mile oil change which is 5 to 11 times fewer oil changes. Just think about the savings on the environment if, for example, the 135 million cars (excluding trucks, buses and taxis) in the United States were equipped with AMSOIL motor oil. Assuming an average service life of 100,000 miles and a sump capacity of 5 quarts per car, an oil change every 3,000 miles will generate 170 quarts of waste oil per year. That same car using AMSOIL and changing the oil every 25,000 miles will only generate 20 quarts of used oil per year. That is a difference of 150 quarts of used oil per car per year that can be saved. If we multiply the 150 quart savings out for all 135 million cars, the United States could see a reduction in waste oil of some 20.3 Billion quarts of oil. If you put 20.3 billion quarts of used oil into 55-gallon barrels and loaded them onto semi-trucks, a line of trucks would stretch end-to-end from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. and back to Los Angeles.
AMSOIL SOLUTIONS
For nearly three decades, AMSOIL INC. has been recognized as the leader in synthetic lubrication technology. AMSOIL was the first to introduce a synthetic motor oil qualified by the American Petroleum Institute, the first to recommend 25,000-mile/1-year drain intervals, the first to recommend 35,000-mile/1-year drain interals, and the first to implement a system for dramatically increasing drain intervals with oil analysis. Decades of research, laboratory analysis and millions of engine miles have kept AMSOIL the leader in automotive applications for synthetic lubrication. Although the results have paid off in maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste, they are not conclusive. AMSOIL is the leader in synthetics and with continued research, analysis and product development will remain the industry’s leader.
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE
In 1983 AMSOIL created the TRI-GARD system. The life of a lubricant is dependent on the quality of oil and the filtration system’s ability to keep it clean. The AMSOIL TRI-GARD system incorporates AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil, the AMSOIL Foam Air Filter, the AMSOIL By-Pass Filter and oil analysis to dramatically extend the oil change interval. Less oil changed means less oil disposal and less oil pollution.
With regards to the environment, the AMSOIL TRI-GARD System is the most technologically sound, environmentally friendly motor oil program to reduce oil disposal.
ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMICAL BENEFIT
REDUCES EMISSIONS, INCREASES ENGINE LIFE
Each year nearly 600 million gallons of motor oil are burned and exit through the tailpipes of cars and trucks,
creating emissions pollution. Petroleum oils volatilize (burn off) more readily than AMSOIL synthetic oils and
create more emissions pollution. The graph below shows the results of six oils that underwent the NOACK Volatility Test. Of all the oils tested, AMSOIL shows dramatically less weight loss . . . less than half the weight loss of its closest counterpart. Some oils tested lost almost 20 percent of their weight. That means almost one fifth of the oil boils away and is released into the environment. For most cars, that’s approximately a quart of oil being burned and expelled into nature. The thicker oil left behind after volatization contributes to damaging deposits, sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which cause reduced engine life, reduced fuel economy and increased air pollution.
