‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign observed at Department of Education

Research scholars and students pursuing graduation, post-graduation and diploma courses at the Department of Education, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) participated in essay and poster-making contests, debates and patriotic song competitions with nationalist zeal and fervor to observe the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign and commemorate 75 years of Indian Independence.

“The celebrations at the Department of Education invoked patriotism in the hearts of the students and staff members and made them remember the contribution of freedom fighters in Indian Independence. The Nation-wide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has been very important in promoting awareness about the Indian National Flag”, said Prof Mujibul Hasan Siddiqui (Chairman, Department of Education).

Dr Mohammad Hanif Ahmad (Programme Coordinator) pointed out: “The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme inspired Indians everywhere to hoist the National Flag at their homes. The campaign made the relationship with the national flag a more personal one rather than just keeping it formal or institutional. It also made us remember the sacrifices of the great leaders”.

Prof Nasrin evaluated the essays and posters of students and judged the debate and patriotic songs contest.

Tokyo-headquartered utility vehicles major, Isuzu Motors International FZE has appointed Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumnus, Mansoor Ahmed as the company’s new president.

He graduated from AMU with a Mechanical Engineering degree and also holds a diploma in marketing management.

Mansoor has over 35 years of experience and has held various senior management responsibilities in the automotive sector across Asia.

Prior to joining Isuzu Motors, Mansoor was the Senior Vice President for Strategy and Product Management at UD Trucks. He has also worked with the Volvo Group Trucks followed by a successful 12-year stint with Tata Motors.

He was delivering a lecture on ‘Career Counseling’ at the Women’s College.

“Each student possesses a unique character and to pull out that unique character the concerned student needs a mentor or a counselor”, said Hameed while urging students to nurture their skills with sheer hard work.

Presiding over the programme, Prof Naima Khatoon (Principal, Women’s College) remarked: Career counselors and mentors boost the confidence of students and help them to adopt the best practices for success in achieving their goals.

Walkathon held at AMU Malappuram Centre

Students and teachers of the Malappuram Centre, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) walked across the breadth of the road from the Department of Law at the Centre swerving to the residential area and then returning back in a ‘Walkathon’ of the Health and Hygiene Committee to observe the nation-wide ‘Fit India Movement’ under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports guidelines.

Flagging off the Walkathon with faculty members, Dr Shahanawaz Ahmed Malik said: Every Indian should be fit and that is why our Government has launched the ‘Fit India Movement’.

He motivated the faculty members, students and staff of the Centre to attempt walking 10,000 steps each on the day and follow it up in daily routine.

“Let us make ‘Fit India’ a people’s movement”, pressed Dr Shahanawaz.

Dr Hamza VK (Chairman, Health and Hygiene Committee) emphasised: “This Walkathon aims to create awareness for a fit and healthy lifestyle. It is a unique event for spreading the message that the determination of ensuring a healthy and fit country and citizens is paramount”.

The ‘Fit India’ event at the Centre also included a mass exercise programme in which Dr Harris Muhammed (Coordinator, Health and Hygiene Committee) made participants perform various exercises and inspired them to keep up fitness commitments.

AMU announces essay competition on "Sir Syed and Cultural Pluralism"

The Aligarh Muslim University will hold the annual All India Essay Writing Competition for university and college students on "Sir Syed and Cultural Pluralism" in English, Hindi, and Urdu.

AMU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Omar Saleem Peerzada said that the competition is being held in three languages, English, Urdu, and Hindi and the first, second and third prizes will be given in three languages separately.

"The essay writing competition is open for bonafide students of all Indian universities and colleges, however, the students up to Class XII are not eligible to participate in the competitions", he added.

Students interested in participating in the Hindi and Urdu essay competitions can write their essays on "Sir Syed Aur Sanskritik Bahulwad" and "Sir Syed Aur Saquafati Takseeriyat", respectively.

There are three cash prizes in each language, First Prize for Rs. 25,000/-, second for Rs. 15,000/- and the third for Rs. 10,000/- and the winners will be felicitated in the Sir Syed Day Commemorative Meeting on October 17.

Prof Latif Hussain Shah Kazmi, Department of Philosophy, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) delineated Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan’s approach to science and religion while presenting an online paper on ‘Sir Sayyid on Philosophy, Religion and Science’ in the international webinar, ‘Philosophy and Science: Can the Twin Meet?’ of the Averroes Centre for Philosophical Studies, Awantipora Islamic University of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir.

He explained the significance and applications of philosophy, religion and science in life as understood and advocated by the AMU founder, Sir Sayyid.

“Sir Sayyid possessed an unflinching faith in Islam and the Sirah of Prophet Muhammad. At the same time, the deep love for philosophy and a great concern for scientific progress and Western outlook impacted him to reconstruct the Islamic thought system for the onward development”, said Prof Kazmi.

Speaking on the Sir Sayyid’s rationalistic approach to life, Prof Kazmi emphasised that the need for philosophy is not just to understand the meaning and purpose of life but also to know the true spirit of religion.

Prof Kazmi said: “Sir Sayyid has been quoted saying, Philosophy will be in our right hand and natural science in our left and the Kalimah (There is no deity but God) will crown our head”.

Faculty members and interns of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) were upskilled to save the lives of people suffering sudden cardiac arrests with high-quality CPR and team dynamics in the recently concluded Indian Resuscitation Council Federation (IRCF) certified Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) Course of the Medical Education Unit (MEU), JNMC.

Attending the valedictory function as the Chief Guest, a well-known pediatrician, Dr. Hamida Tariq said: “The experience of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) initiated IRCF BCLS course provides the participants with accurate and scientific resuscitation training”.

“This course is in line with the evidence elicited in the international and national literature on Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support”, she added.

Speaking on the effectiveness of basic life support training, Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, JNMC) emphasised: “Life-saving interventions are vital for the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest associated deaths. A successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene by the health team plays an important role in reducing mortality rates”.

Prof Seema Hakim (Coordinator, MEU) stressed, “Theoretical education alone is not sufficient for applying a successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In order to successfully apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation, current knowledge should be updated and technical skills should be consolidated”.

She pressed for the need to gain competency regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation practices in health workers and pointed out that the RRT Centre and Skill Lab at JNMC is equipped with state-of-art facilities to provide health workers with proper ambiance and comfort for updating skills.

Course coordinator, Prof S Moied Ahmed (Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care) delineated the course structure and explained how it trains a rescuer to diagnose cardiac arrest, call for help, administer high-quality CPR, defibrillate and transfer the patient to higher centers.

“Basic Life Support is performed to support the patient’s circulation and respiration through the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation until advanced life support arrives. Victims who have had early and correct BLS intervention will be better oxygenated and are more likely to respond to advanced techniques, thereby increasing their chance of survival”, said Prof Shahid A Siddiqui.

Dr Rakesh Garg (Additional Prof, AIIMS, New Delhi and the Course Chief Instructor) called for a wide CPR awareness and acceptance.

He also spoke about the National Emergency Life Support (NELS) course of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Prof Qazi Ehsan Ali, Prof Hammad Usmani and Dr Abu Nadeem called for more training and expertise for health workers in lifesaving techniques.

Dr Shahna Ali (Organising Secretary) and Dr Manazir Athar (Co-Organising Secretary) conducted the programme. They were also in the team of six course instructors with Prof S Moied, Dr Rakesh Garg, Dr Obaid A Siddiqui and Dr Farah Nasreen.

A total of 36 faculty members and interns registered for the six-hour course comprising didactic lectures and hands-on training. After the course completion, the participants also appeared in a MCQ based written exam and a practical exam in which all of them scored over 75 percent marks.

‘National Sports Day’ observed at AMU

Students from Aligarh-based schools, colleges and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) received prizes and certificates for participating in hockey and volleyball matches and bouts of wrestling and arm wrestling in the recently concluded AMU Games Committee Outreach programme to observe the ‘National Sports Day’ and ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations.

Distributing prizes at the AMU Hockey Ground, University alumnus, Zafar Iqbal (Former Indian field hockey captain, Olympian and Padma Shri and Arjuna Award for Hockey recipient) said: “I am reminiscing how as a young student, I started training at the AMU Hockey Ground. I have an emotional connection with this ground as it was from here that I went ahead to represent the Country and become an Olympian”.

He urged student participants to avail the opportunities in sports which have been provided by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi through various Government initiatives.

“We need more sports icons like Zafar Iqbal and Govinda from AMU and I am sure that with dedication and hard work, many more students will be able to represent the Country on the highest levels in various sports” said AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.

He also motivated students to remain fit and adopt sports for healthy lives.

The Institute of Ophthalmology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been organising a series of activities to raise awareness about eye donation and acquaint students with the latest advances in ophthalmology as part of the Country-wide, ‘National Eye Donation Fortnight’.

In one such event, resource persons delivered lectures, held interactive sessions and provided the postgraduate students with hands-on-training in a comprehensive ‘Phacoshala, Theory and Wet Lab, Postgraduate Resident Training Programme’ at the Institute of Ophthalmology. The workshop to up-skill students in the Phacoemulsification procedure was held in collaboration with Johnson and Johnson Vision Limited.

Welcoming the experts, Prof Yogesh Gupta (Director, Institute of Ophthalmology) pointed out that the standard of care for treating cataracts is Phacoemulsification (Phaco) surgery, yet not every patient has equitable access to this treatment technique and this is often due to a lack of training standards at many health centres, which results in varying surgical competencies or lack of high-quality outcomes-based programs focused on surgical skills and support.

“But at JNMC, students and faculty members are regularly updated with latest advances in treatment of cataracts and these workshops help us to further raise the bar of excellence in health care at the Institute of Ophthalmology”, said Prof Yogesh.

He also pressed for the need for ‘Wet Lab’ training on animal and model eyes before training on human eyes.

“Programmes like these help surgeons adopt the latest techniques and technologies for advanced cataract procedures and strengthen the capabilities of the ophthalmic surgical teams”, emphasised Prof Adeeb Alam Khan.

Prof Adeeb was attending the programme with Dr Abdul Waris, Dr S Wajahat Rizvi, Dr Shazia Arrin, Dr Saqib and Dr Atika J Siddiqui.

Experts from Johnson and Johnson Vision Limited gave useful presentations on the dynamics of Phacoemulsification machines.

Dr Ziya Siddiqui conducted the programme and extended the vote of thanks.

The workshop also featured a theory presentation session along with the hands-on Phacoemulsification training on model eyes.

Meanwhile, a poster-making competition to spread awareness on eye donation is also scheduled at the Institute of Ophthalmology to mark the National Eye Donation Fortnight’ on September 3.

“Participants are encouraged to create posters for public awareness in the contest scheduled from 1 pm to 3 pm on September 3. The winners will be felicitated in the concluding ceremony”, said Prof Yogesh Gupta.

Dr Ziya Siddiqui (Programme Organiser) informed the programme is aimed at motivating people to take a pledge to donate eyes.

Prominent Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) City School will now be known as the ‘Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh Aligarh Muslim University City School’.

The school has been renamed to honour Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, notable AMU alumnus, Indian freedom fighter, journalist, social reformer, writer, revolutionary and President in the Provisional Government of India, which served as the Indian Government in exile during World War I from Kabul in 1915.

“The decision to rename the school was taken in the light of resolution number 28 of the ordinary meeting of the Executive Council held on March 22, 2021”, said AMU Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS).

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said: “With the re-naming, AMU pays tribute to Raja Mahendra Pratap, who attended the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University. Raja Mahendra Pratap’s name is counted among the prominent alumni of the university. His father and grandfather were close to the educationist and reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan”.

Three-year-old Ayesha Singh undergoes rare surgery at JNMC

Three-year-old Ayesha Singh would always suffer a blue tinge to the skin and became tired with rapid breathing between feedings. She sweated excessively and was not gaining weight. The girl, who underwent a six-hour long rare surgery for a congenital anomaly of heart condition at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will now grow up like any other normal child. Thanks to the free-of-cost treatment under the Rashtriya Bal Swathya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme that came to the rescue of the parents of the girl from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh.

“We first went to private hospitals that were charging exorbitant fees and later to some government speciality centres—where there were endless waiting rows. We are content that the successful surgery at JNMC will allow our only child to grow in good health”, said the Ayesha’s parents.

Prof Mohd Azam Haseen (Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) who supervised the surgery said: “Dr MayankYadav, Dr Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Sartaj Guroo successfully repaired the child’s great vessels that were inverted with a hole in heart and pulmonary valve stenosis, the narrowing of the valve located between the lower right heart chamber and the lung arteries”.

He added: “At the JNMC, our team of surgeons, doctors and paediatric cardiologists have conducted a number of interventional procedures and surgeries for congenital heart conditions. Many of them are children who have been direct beneficiaries of the RBSK scheme, offering free treatment to children for various ailments.”

Dr Mayank Yadav said, a multitude of complex cardiac defects got treated at JNMC—including some very rare and difficult cases.

Over 300 free cardiac surgeries have been conducted under the RBSK scheme, said Dr Shamayal Rabbani.

Dr ShaadAbqari (Nodal Officer, Inter-departmental Pediatric Cardiac Centre- IPCC) and his colleague Dr Moaz Kidwai who did the diagnosis of the patient after she was referred by the specialists at the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) said that despite the long list which of patients at the JNMC, surgeries are been timely done.

“JNMC doctors have treated a large number of children with congenital heart conditions alongside adult patients. I thank our doctors, nurses and the support staff who have ensured these patients walk out of hospital in the best of health after successful recovery,” said AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) and Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqui (Principal, JNMC) said, most of the children undergoing interventional procedures and surgeries at JNMC are from poor families and the free-cost surgeries under the RBSK scheme have been a boon for them.

Dr Dipti Channa was the cardiac anesthetist, while Dr Sabir Ali Khan managed the perfusion status of the patient.

Pediatric intensivists, Dr Farog and Dr Asma took the post operative care of the kid. Dr Mehtab Ahmad conducted the Cardiac CT.

National Science Day-2022 was celebrated on 28th February by the Physics Department of AMU, in virtual mode. The day is observed to remember the invention of the “Raman Effect” by Indian Physicist Sir C V Raman for which he earned the Nobel Prize. Sir CV Raman was also conferred D.Sc. (Honorius Causa) degree by Aligarh Muslim University on 20th November 1931. The National Science Day-2022 programmes were held as part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor in his message mentioned the importance of the National Science Day and congratulated the Department of Physics for achieving higher academic excellence with each passing year.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest, Prof Archana Sharma ( Senior Advisor for Relations with International Organizations Principal Scientist, Physics Department, CERN, Geneva Switzerland), said she has an emotional bonding with AMU.

Prof Sharma delivered a talk on the topic "Blue Sky Mega Science Research, CoronaVirus, Why Should I Care?. She mentioned “Imagine a life without the words www or http? They emerged one fine day from a scientific laboratory! The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN Geneva, Switzerland is home to thousands of high energy physicists. By exploiting large sophisticated radiation detectors, designed and constructed over decades we are cumulatively seeking answers to questions about the origin, evolution and composition of our universe.

With the world wide web, medical imaging, diagnostic and treatment techniques, high-performance computing, space exploration, art restoration to name a few - the audacious, innovative cutting-edge technologies of particle physics have entered and transformed mainstream society, she stressed and traced the exciting adventure at CERN and how we can collectively “fight pandemics and catastrophes that are unknowns like COVID-19 and some known and silent challenges like cancer”.

The Dean faculty of Science, Prof M Ashraf, emphasized the importance of celebrations and released an Annual Report-2021 along with Physics Bulletin-2022 on the occasion.

Prof M Sajjad Athar, gave a detailed description of the department and the importance of National Science day celebrations.

Prof BP Singh (Chairperson, Dept of Physics) in his welcome address gave an overview of all the activities organized by the department and its achievements.

On this occasion, awards and certificates were given to the students for their research paper presentation, poster presentation, and essay writing competition.

The non-teaching staff members were also honoured on the occasion for their services.

The students of class 11th and 12th from Naurangi Lal Government Inter College, Aligarh were present on the occasion and participated in the online programme in the Conference Hall of Physics Department.

AMU faculty member delivers plenary speech

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) faculty member from the Department of Community Medicine, J N Medical College (JNMC), Prof Saira Mehnaz elucidated the health and economic impacts of the pandemic on Indian slum residents and their vulnerability due to the unhygienic environment and high population density.

She was delivering the online plenary speech on ‘Indian Slums: Post Covid Scenario’ in ‘The 5th Global Public Health Conference 2022’ on ‘Future of Global Health in a Changing World’ of The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) in collaboration with the University of Cyberjaya (Malaysia) and International Association of Public Health.

Speaking on the socio economic impact of pandemic on slum dwellers, Prof Saira said: “People in slums live below the subsistence level in a range of ways and many reports and surveys have suggested that the pandemic left them poorer and hungry”.

She pointed out that urban slum populations were more in peril because of high population density, informal employment, and weak health services.

“Small scale industries and labour sector in the underserved slum population of India were the hardest hit due to the Covid spread and subsequent lockdowns. The poor living conditions, malnutrition and weakened immune systems made slum dwellers more vulnerable”, Prof Saira said adding that the Covid crisis forced authorities and local people to rethink sanitation and public health issues.

She added: After three Covid waves, slums have now started getting the required attention and residents have become more cautious.

Prof Saira spoke about how the pandemic threw a large number of slum dwellers out of work, and sharply reduced earnings for those who remained employed in some fashion.

“With the collapse of purchasing power and continued restrictions, the economic crisis continued well after the lockdown. There was a severe disruption of public services including nutrition-related services”, she said.

Prof Saira pointed out that the crisis also increased the gender gap and inequality.

“The job loss during the pandemic has impacted women grievously, upending their lives with ramifications that are irreversible. The pandemic has increased their unpaid work and has put extra burden on women through increased domestic responsibilities, household chores and child care demands”, she stressed.

AMU faculty member speaks on Goodness, Beauty, and Truth

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) faculty member from the Department of Philosophy, Dr Aamir Riyaz elucidated how Muslim philosophers considered the quest for knowledge as a divine command, and knowledge of the soul, and particularly of the intellect.

He was speaking in an online panel discussion on ‘Goodness, Beauty, and Truth: Contemporary Reflections and Interpretations’ in the Academic Seminar of the Graduate School and Nakhon Ratchasima Campus, Mahachulalongkornvidyalaya University, Thailand.

Dr Aamir presented his thoughts on Goodness, Beauty, and Truth in the Islamic perspective with references from the Holy Quran and Hadith.

He also delivered a presentation on ‘The Concept of Ethics in Islamic Philosophy: With Special Reference to the Holy Quran’ and discussed how the concept of ethics is around good conduct and excellent character.

AMU celebrates Republic Day

Festivities beginning with hoisting of the National Flag by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor at the Strachey Hall of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) marked the celebrations of the 73rd Republic Day, the day when the Constitution of India was adopted, transitioning our Country into a republic.

Saluting India’s vibrant democracy, Vice-Chancellor said: “Our Constitution is not just a mere set of fundamental laws that form the basis of governance, but it embodies certain basic values, philosophies, and objectives. India got its constitution and became a republic on January 26, 1950. It is a historic milestone—which we commemorate by paying sincere tributes to all great personalities who made tremendous sacrifices to achieve freedom”.

“This day reminds us of the struggle our torchbearers put in to achieve 'Purna Swaraj'. We pay homage to our great leaders like the father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi; Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution of India, and first Minister of Law and Justice, Dr B R Ambedkar; Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru; Sardar Patel, Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and others, who devoted their entire lives to achieve freedom for our country”, he added.

Prof Mansoor emphasised: “The Constitution provides the citizens of the Indian Republic with the right to choose their representatives who can lead the Nation—each citizen enjoys equal rights, irrespective of status, religion, gender etc”.

“Apart from equal rights, the features of our Constitution include democracy, freedom of speech and secularism—different religions, castes, cultures and languages flourish side by side in our country. This unity in diversity is a unique feature and we must strive to uphold the rights, privileges that our Constitution gives us”, he said adding that the ceremonial parades at the Rajpath on Republic Day represent the vibrant states of our country that bear testimony to our unity in diversity and rich cultural heritage.

Prof Mansoor further said, “Social justice and empowerment of weaker sections of the society is another cardinal guiding principle of the Constitution and in the hundred-year history, AMU has striven to provide affordable and quality education to hundreds of thousands of talented youth of our Country and empowered them and their families irrespective of religion, caste and gender”.

“It is a matter of great honour and pride that AMU alumni have also played a prominent role in the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Several alumni of the university also contributed in the process of framing of our Constitution under the guidance of Dr B R Ambedkar”, he postulated.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out: Covid pandemic has adversely affected all spheres of life and it has also badly affected the education sector from primary schools to higher education institutions, but that did not stop the University Administration in starting new courses, providing modern job oriented avenues such as B.Tech (Artificial Intelligence), M.Ch (Neurosurgery), B.Sc (Nursing), B.Sc. in various paramedical subjects, M.Sc. (Data Sciences), M.Sc. (Forensic and Digital Sciences), M.Sc. (Floriculture) and M.Sc. (Agronomy).

“Proposal to increase MBBS seats from 150 to 200 has also been submitted to the National Medical Commission. We are putting in efforts to start the institute of pharmacy in our university”, he informed.

Speaking on the preparations for the third Covid wave, Prof Mansoor said: “We have tried the best to gear ourselves up by upgrading facilities at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH). A 100 bedded Covid ward with 25 ICU beds for Covid patients is operational at JNMCH, a new 50 bed Covid Paediatric ward with ICU has been established, new ventilators and other sophisticated equipments have been procured, three oxygen generation plants and one additional liquid medical oxygen plant has been installed to meet the oxygen requirements in emergency situations”.

He exhorted: “The world’s largest vaccination programme is going on in our Country and it is the duty of all of us to get ourselves inoculated with our family members and motivate people from all walks of life and different sections of the society to participate in the vaccination drive including those eligible for precautionary/booster doses. Vaccination is the best safeguard to prevent serious disease, hospitalisation and death. Let us hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon and ‘Inshallah’ and we will return to normal life”.

“I extend gratitude to the AMU fraternity for their help and cooperation during the difficult time of the pandemic. Teamwork, consultation, coordination and planning have been the hallmark of our administration. In the smooth functioning of the University, the support I got from the teachers, supporting staff, students, alumni and well-wishers has played a pivotal role. I am greatly indebted to all of you”, said the Vice-Chancellor.

I exhort everyone to strengthen our democracy by being united, fearless and remaining positive in attitudes— Let us forge forward confidently to a healthy, strong and self-reliant India”, said Prof Mansoor while concluding the Republic Day speech.

Prof Mansoor with his wife, Dr Hameeda Tariq later planted tree saplings to mark the occasion and inaugurated the renovated common room of the residential hostel, S S Hall (South).

AMU Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS); Prof M Mohsin Khan (Finance Officer), Prof Mujahid Beg (Dean Students Welfare), Mr Mujib Ullah Zuberi (Controller of Examination), Prof Mohd Wasim Ali (Proctor), Deans of various faculties, Principals of all colleges, Provosts of all Halls, Chairpersons of different departments, Directors of all institutes and other University functionaries attended the function.

The flag hoisting ceremony was conducted by the Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid, who also read the preamble of the Constitution and administered the Integrity Oath.

University students: Ghazala Zameer (B.Sc) and Raza Haider Zaidi (BA. LLB) also delivered speeches.

The university also organised celebrations in all offices, faculties, colleges, departments and schools. The National Flag was also unfurled at the Administrative Block Building, Vice Chancellor's Lodge, Maualana Azad (MA) Library, Faculty of Arts, all schools and colleges of the University, all offices of the Deans and DSW, all Provost Offices and the Proctor’s Office.

An online Mushaira (poetic symposium) inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mansoor and presided by Prof Azarmi Dukht Safavi was also organised by the Department of Urdu on the intervening night of January 25 and 26.

VC lays the foundation of Minority Girls Hostel at Kishanganj Centre

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor today laid the foundation stone of the Minority Girls Hostel at the Kishanganj Centre, Bihar via videoconferencing. The new hostel will be constructed with the munificent funds of Rs 10. 50 crore provided by the Ministry of Minority Affairs.

“I express undying gratitude to the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the Government of Bihar and Bihar Chief Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar for their generous support. We are indebted with their unstinting favour”, said the Vice-Chancellor.

He added: “We have also submitted a detailed proposal to the Ministry of Education for the sanctioning of posts and funds for the centre, which was recently considered at a meeting of the Ministry”.

Prof Mansoor pointed out that the new hostel will greatly help the minority girl students particularly from the Seemanchal region as it requires many more educational institutions for the cause of female education.

“We have a management studies program at the Kishanganj Centre and we intend to re-start the Bachelor in Education course and begin the BA LLB programme at the Centre”, said the Vice-Chancellor.

He emphasised: “Since AMU is a part of an education movement started by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, it is hoped that three university centres situated in Kishanganj, Murshidabad and Malappurram will develop into full-fledged universities in the years to come. There is a need of hundreds of new universities to educate the marginalised sections.”

Prof Mansoor further pointed out that the Ministry of Minority Affairs has also given Rs 50 crore each for the Murshidabad and Malappurram centres for residential accommodation of students.

In the welcome address, Prof Hassan Imam (Director, Kishanganj Centre) said that AMU occupies a unique place among Indian universities and its centres carry further the university’s identity depicting the idea of India in its character of pluralism and inclusiveness.

AMU Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid-IPS, Prof M Mohsin Khan (Finance Officer) and Prof Afifullah Khan (OSD Development also attended the online programme.

Yasar Imam (Event Coordinator) conducted the programme, while Dr Zeba Naz extended the vote of thanks.
