The pink Transform plate that I blogged about not long ago was just featured in an Etsy Treasury for Mother’s Day. Just in case you’re wondering, Etsy is a collection of stores – sort of like Ebay, but it’s not an auction site – specifically for artists to showcase their creations. Anyone who is a member – buyers or sellers – can put together a treasury of favorite items, items relating to a certain theme, items relating to a certain holiday, items related to other events such as weddings, or any other collection they can think of. Since only 16 items can be featured in a treasury, it’s an honor to be picked for one of these. My thanks go out to Mary and Kerry, a husband and wife creative team from Lincoln, Nebraska for featuring my work. You can check it out here: Pretty in Pink Treasury. If you’re interested in purchasing the plate, you can buy it in my web store here: Transform – Pink Fused Glass Intention Plate.

Several new plates came out of the kiln over the last month or so and I haven’t taken the time to blog about them. This one was the most different of the recent ones that I made. One of the biggest noticeable differences is that this intention plate was made with opaque pink glass on the bottom. I usually use transparent glass for the bottom layer, but I really like the way that this plate turned out, so I’ll probably be using more opaques in the future.

Since butterflies are a symbol of transformation, I used a butterfly shape cut from copper mesh in the middle for the embellishment, and a top sheet of white, pink, and red confetti glass to seal it in place. In the final plate, the butterfly appears to be emerging from fog and threads holding it back. It seems to me to be a great additional element to the Transform intention that the butterfly is having to break through barriers and obscurity. The opaque red glass in the upper right houses the Transform intention for the plate. I was planning on using the word Transformation, but it’s too long to write without taking up half the plate!

If you are interested in the purchasing this plate, it is available in the store. Please leave feedback and comments on this one, since it’s so different from the other plates I’ve been making. Thanks!

There is a finally a working title for this new venture that is the artist community outside of Sedona: Acres of PEARLS. PEARLS stands for Purposefully Engaged, Artistic Real Living Spaces. It represents several of the concepts that I associate with this new community, which include intentional living, a focus on artists, and a space for each of us to live and work together in a beautiful setting. It also ties back to a story entitled “Acres of Diamonds” about finding treasure in your own backyard. We’ll see whether that turns out to be the final name or whether it changes by the time the space is ready for us to move in.

I have closed on the 40 acres of land and am in the process of acquiring another 38 acres and a road that goes along with the new parcel. The picture on the left is a little rise on the westernmost edge of the land where we did a gratitude ceremony for the ease and grace with which we found and purchased the first parcel of land. Between the two parcels there are hilly scrub areas, flat grassy areas, forested areas, a dry creek bed – which (pending advice on the matter) we may attempt to revive with wells, and a circular area with an earthen berm around it that used to be used a long time ago for watering cattle. In connecting with the land and listening to what it had to tell us about its history and uses for the various areas, we heard information from the past as well as advice for the future.

The design process is just about to start. We’re having some preliminary meetings with the architects now, even though we won’t kick into high gear until the end of the month. Oh, and that reminds me, I keep saying “we are” not “I am”. There are several people who have expressed interest in participating in the community already. One in particular has been really active in working with me on this project. Since I don’t have permission to blog about her, I won’t mention her name yet, but she knows who she is…

Not all of the people who have expressed some level of interest are ready to commit, especially since we have no idea what the numbers are going to look like for the individual homes yet. So far, I will be footing the bill for the build-out of the infrastructure, because I seem to have a habit in this lifetime of manifesting money easily and I have enough to be able to do that. Actually, I should say the company will, since I’m putting the land in the name of a company who will own it and actually do the development, as well as take care of the maintenance. It will be essential, especially since we’ve already found out that with multiple homes and one well, we have to form a private water company in order to deliver water to the individual homes we will be building.

As this process goes forward, I’ll be sharing updates and photos along the way to document what we’re doing and where we’re going. I’ve also created some new glass pieces and need to make some time to blog about them soon…

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted here. Quite a lot has been changing in my life and business. The biggest thing that is changing is that my biggest dream – creating a community for artists – is now in the process of coming true. That has had a huge impact on my focus and my attention for quite a while as I’ve been getting the ball rolling to make this dream a reality.

I was also planning to attend a show in Orlando in April that would allow me to showcase my glass, especially my intention plates, in front of a tribe that I think would be very welcoming of my work. With the change in focus to the artist community, I’ve decided to withdraw from the show so that I’m not splitting myself between two very different efforts that require large amounts of very different focus and attention.

In the coming months, I may be blogging about new pieces of art coming out of the kiln, however, my main focus is likely to be on the community I’m creating. It will be an off-the-grid, completely green project, with housing as well as shared studio space for the artists who live in the community to share ideas and inspiration with each other. I’m currently closing on the 40 acres of land outside of Sedona on which the community will be built. After that, conversations with the architects, engineers and builders will begin. I’ll probably be posting quite a bit about that process as it proceeds.

With this change in topic for the moment, I will understand if some of my readers stop following this blog. However, I am so excited about this new phase of my life that I want to share it with a wider audience. I hope you’ll come along for the ride!

This Nature intention plate is the last in the series of eight plates that I made for myself. For this plate, I used brown glass for the bottom layer to go with the bear embellishment and a clear glass with amber and mint glass threads in it for the top layer. The plaque that holds the Nature intention is made of an opal glass in shades of vanilla, yellow, orange, and brown.

I’ve still been experimenting with the embellishments that I used in between the two layers of glass that make up the plates. As another type of experiment, I tried using two colors of glass glitter – gold and green – on the bear, to coordinate with the nature theme and the threads in the top layer of glass. My other thought was that the copper mesh might not show up very well against the brown glass background, so the glass glitter would help it to stand out.

As it turned out, the glass glitter completely disappeared in the first firing, leaving a huge bubble over the bear. That’s why the bear embellishment has a darker spot in the center. Since the glitter was made of glass, I have no idea why this reaction occurred and none of my glass friends know either. As a result of the bubble, the plate required an extra full fuse firing so that I could fill the open spot where the bubble popped with clear glass. You can still see where the amber threads on the left side of the bear were a bit disturbed by the bubble.

Working with glass can be very forgiving sometimes, in that experiments gone wrong can often be fixed by additional firings, like I was able to accomplish in this particular case. At any rate, I do think the plate turned out well in the end and that’s what really matters.

Yes, I know that Halloween is over, but the title still seemed very appropriate for this particular intention plate. This plate was another unexpected, but very cool, result from my experiments with embellishments. I have been experimenting with various metallic embellishments – coins, copper and brass mesh, metal buttons, etc. – to find out which work well with glass and which do not.

The embellishment for this plate was cut from a sheet of very thin variegated faux gold leaf. The leaf is made from a combination of various metals, and then is sprayed with chemicals which give it its characteristic variegated look. Because this particular leaf starts with a base of copper, I thought it was likely to work well with glass.

As you can see in the photo, the embellishment turned out to be quite translucent, which I really wasn’t expecting. I suppose that the very thin sheets that make up gold leaf must melt somewhat in the heat of the kiln and that creates the translucent effect during firing. I just didn’t expect that the leaf would actually burn away in some parts of the embellishment or that the embellishment would tear as the layers of glass fused together. I did expect that the chemicals that give the variegated leaf its color patterns would give the leaf more texture than the copper mesh that I use most often for embellishments, and that did in fact happen

All in all, I’m very happy with the ghost effect of the sun embellishment, which was a good thing, considering that the intention for this plate was Happiness. If this plate makes you feel happy too, perhaps you would be interested in acquiring this unique piece of art for you or someone special in your life. If so, head over to my Etsy store before someone else takes it home!

Some of the clear that I used was confetti glass with bits of yellow and shades of green from one piece of scrap, and yellow, orange, and red from another piece of scrap. I also used a bit of clear and black wispy glass, which added the darker ripples to the piece.

Maybe it’s the holidays fast approaching, but to me, the bowl came out reminding me very much of the red and white peppermint candies that you see at Christmas time, with a little bit of exotic color thrown in. It also reminded me of Christmas because of the large areas of red and the green bits in it. If you want to do a little early holiday shopping you could pick it up as a gift for a special someone in my store…

This intention plate turned out even better than I had hoped. I was going for a very ethereal looking background to go with the Spirituality intention for the plate. The photo doesn’t do the plate justice, I’m afraid, although you do get the general idea. This is one plate that you really have to see in person to appreciate.

The bottom layer of glass is an iridescent blue, which really adds shimmer to the plate when it catches the light just right. On top of that, I’ve layered a bird with a body from copper mesh and a wing from brass mesh for contrast. The top layer is a wispy light and dark blue glass I found on my recent trip to Portland. The Spirituality intention plaque of opaque blue glass is in the lower left on this particular plate.

What I didn’t expect was the halo effect around the bird this time. Since I haven’t used iridescent glass for the bottom layer before, I’m not sure whether that caused the effect or whether it was something else. However, I do think that it really adds a nice touch to the bird embellishment. The way the top layer of glass sits on top of the bird almost looks as though the bird is flying into darker clouds, since the front of the body is darker than the back.

All in all, even though it is a very clean design, I think it has a lot of character that adds to its Spirituality intention. You can find it in my Etsy store, if you are interested in bringing it into your home to support your intention for more spirit in your life. Enjoy!
