The only thing she knew about him was that he was auditioning for the same instrument as her--via video nonetheless. He won the spot. And over time, he also won her heart.

Just talking to Amanda Jo and Jesse, it is obvious they are passionate individuals. Passionate about their family, friends, faith, and each other. They give each other soft smiles that reach their eyes, and quick glances meant only for each other.

It is not often the bride and groom spend the whole day in bare feet, but for them, it was perfect. And slightly liberating as I kicked off my own shoes to photograph them in the park. They exuded a comfort and that translated perfectly into their images.

Laura + Paul | Bright Sky and Wedding Bells

Since I was young there was a mystic quality to High Cliff. You could hike along the paved paths, and finish the day with a jump in the water sans lifeguards, living life a tad dangerously. Every time I tried to camp there with family or friends, I was rained on, without fail. But we would still come out during the sun filled hours and boulder along the cliffs making that activity a favorite pastime. Deep under the tree coverage, jumping between rocks, and climbing into mini-hideouts created a sense of adventure, even if we were never more then a few feet off the ground.

But the piece that always excited our adventure filled hearts was the fantastic view at the top of the bluff overlooking Lake Winnebago. The trees opened up and there was a view of farmland, now more filled in with housing developments and golf courses but still nonetheless breathtaking. Sail boats would dot the lake, and from the distance look like tiny toys floating in a pond. The site spectacular to visit even after numerous trips.

When Laura mentioned that she and Paul picked this view for their wedding, I knew it was simply perfect. I remembered the exact spot she mentioned because I had hiked up to that spot so many times before. Their wedding day was blessed with a gorgeous sunny sky and comfortable temperature, not to mention that same perfect view of the lake below.

Ladies and gentlemen, turn off your cell phones. Poor Paul had the best sense of humor, "Who would be calling me, everyone I know is right here!"

Gertrude had to make a guest appearance after being such a star in the engagement shoot. She is still a stunner!

Liz + Matt | Sail Boat Engagement Session

Last summer I started taking sailing classes to learn the basics of putting up the sails and maneuvering it around the lake. Nothing fancy, certainly not planning on participating in any regattas anytime soon, but it felt exhilarating to bring it out and really move across the water, the water spraying you as you leaned over the side and cut across the water with a sense of speed and agility.

Imagine my delighted surprise when Liz and Matt mentioned that they had a sail boat of their own harbored locally. They put a lot of work into renovating the vessel and they eagerly agreed to take engagement photos aboard it. The easy part was the portraits from on the deck of the ship, but then I had the bright idea to take the row boat into the harbor and attempt the rest from there, photographing while rowing around the boat. Thankfully, I am not a guppy in a rowboat, and with the combo of the amazing sunlight some pure awesomeness from Liz and Matt some amazing photos sprung forth.

I love this photo, and not just for the gorgeous light, but if you notice in the right corner, their sweet puppy, Koira, made an entrance. She is such a delightfully happy and sweetly spoiled gal!

Oh my goodness, all I can say is you guys pretty much rocked your photos.

Just love how Matt and Liz have such a great personality and sense of humor.

To say that I am excited about your wedding this fall is a bit of an understatement, it is going to be absolutely phenomenal! I am still pushing for Koira to be the flower girl.

Sarah + Aaron | Oshkosh Engagement

The weather may have been hot and sticky, but Sarah and Aaron were cool and rockin'. Sarah had the amazing idea to head over to the Paine Art Center and use the amazing gardens as our backdrop. Awesomeness ensued. I usually do not start a blog post with my favorite from a session, but this one made me go "oooh" the moment I saw it on my monitor.

I love how small of a world we live in. When I was in high school, Aaron and I actually competed against each other in debate. I will not divulge who was the winner in the round, but lets just say for a short nerdy girl with spunk, I was pretty good ;-) Sarah is a long distance runner, and I bow before her. This girl is just starting out and training for marathons, how amazing is that!

Ummm Sarah, did you know you have the amazing eyes that just pop in photographs!

Sarah and Aaron, you both were so much fun to work with, easy going and excited to be around each other. Thanks for sticking in there through the humidity and light rain, and good luck with your wedding plans.

Ali + Adam | Appleton Wedding

What can I say about Ali and Adam ... really they are just too cool for school. They are just so perfect for each other, and simply a delight to work with. There are so many amazing moments from the day that I can hardly contain them in one blog post full of images, so hopefully the slide show to follow will do a little more justice.

Below is the first time Adam saw Ali in her wedding dress--which she looked simply stunning in. No wonder Adam has such a gigantic smile on his face when he saw her. I just love it when the bride and groom get a little time together before the ceremony to just enjoy each other.

This is the groomsman's idea, they wanted to walk toward me looking debonair, holding their personalized mugs.

Another bridal party suggestion, hello AWESOMENESS!

I had to get a couple of snapshots of these little men. The first during the ceremony where he was just hamming it up for his family, the second because there is nothing sweeter then a little guy hanging onto a bridesmaid bouquet.

Loved the classic details!

Right at the end of the ceremony there was a break in the clouds and a gorgeous light flooded Adam and Ali, it was simply magical. The sunshine held for fifteen minutes and then the rain broke, thankfully after everyone was already enjoying hors d'oeuvres. Unfortunately, the beer truck was outside and away from cover, so the guys took charge and made an umbrella caddy, bringing beverages to all those who stayed dry under the tent.

Love how intent everyone is watching the slide show.

Ali and Adam, it was so fortunate that I met the both of you, and so lovely we share a love for a special island. I heard so many times at the wedding from so many different guests how perfect you are together as a couple -- more then I have every heard in one day. There was a genuine love from everyone there and I wish you both a great deal of happiness in your marriage.

Some people are just naturally stunning and co comfortable in front of a camera that you forget that they don't do this ALL the time. There is something fantastic about a pure photo session without bells and whistles where all of the focus is on creating really beautiful portraits. I met Sarah at her sister's wedding, and I immediately knew she would be a delight to work with, so easy going and up for anything. We spent an afternoon playing with the gorgeous sunset light, and these are just a sampling of the many amazing photos that came out as a result.

Without a doubt, one of my favorites, the light was just so delicious.

A Family Affair | family portraits at WIR

That is right, I put my favorite shot of the day right up top. I think the car says it all, racing is a family affair, ergo the best place in the area to take family for photos is the WIR in Kaukauna. Even more to celebrate, the night before this dad took first, YIPPEE!

We headed out to the track, and they were right, it was still sticky from the hot tires on the pavement. Here are just a few of my other favorites:

To say that I am slightly in awe of this amazing car is an understatement. Of course we had to grab a few shots of the "fifth" member of the family. Alright, I am wiping the drool from my computer screen right now, she is a beauty!

Anything for a Good Photo: Part III

For those of you who may have missed it, here are Part I and Part II of the series where I show what I am willing to do to get the perfect shot -- or at least what seemed like a good idea at the time. I've jumped in ponds, bailed out snow drifts, and now I have been caught again being the goofy photographer on the busy streets of Madison. Hey, no one said good images take themselves, sometimes you have to work a little bit.

The one thing about having a second photographer around when you are in a session is sometimes they turn the lens on you. So as I'm editing, I stumble across little jewels like this (all care of Miss Courtney during Anthony and Sara's engagement session):

Okay, that one above was not so bad. And in the ones below you see how much fun I have climbing riot towers. Not to mention, Anthony looks like he is laughing -- definately proof that I am funny!

But my-oh-my, every once and a while I stumble across a photo like the one below. Anyone with any sense of dignity would bury it as far as possible in the editing pile never to see the light of day. But what fun would that be? Hmmm, just imagine folks walking by as I am hanging out on the ground. But if I did not do this, then I would miss photos like...

...this. Yes, it was worth it.

Anthony + Sara | Madison Engagement

Anthony and Sara are amazing, no, scratch that. They are PURE AWESOMENESS. While they are getting married in the Fox Valley, I delighted in the idea of driving down to Madison to photograph them in their current home and change up my "artistic backdrop" a bit. We started out at the Terrace on Lake Mendota -- the chairs are iconic after all -- and made our way around a small part of the campus.

Ooooah, yummy sunlight.

Captured moments after a squad car came driving down the path behind us. He smiled at us, but I'm surprised he did not put on the sirens for these steamy photos.

How could we go to Madison and not give a little shout out to the city? Hopefully we can bring that fun with us back to the Fox Valley. "W" for Wisconsin!

Oh wait, who is this gorgeous young lady that popped into this post. Blog readers, I would like to introduce you to the fabulous Courtney! She came along with me to the session to help capture some images from a few different angles. Not only is she developing into an amazing photographer with a fantastic eye, she even puts up with my goofy sense of humor, double bonus! You are all going to see a lot more from this gal in the future.

I knew that Jan and Jim would be a special wedding to photograph, very personal and intimate. After their engagement session, it was obvious they were relaxed and up for anything, as well as making their day truly unique. So unique that Jan and Jim, who are both wedding celebrants, not only wrote their own ceremony, but also performed it. The words they spoke were so beautiful and heartfelt, and surrounded by so many friends and family the entire day was simply spectacular.

The lighting and weather were simply a photographers dream. During the reception, I had to grab them both and head into the sun setting light because it was simply to perfect to resist. It even sprinkled for just a little bit after the ceremony and everyone had been through the receiving line, rain on the wedding day is most certainly good luck.

Are you kidding me?! Jan's eyes are just gorgeous, these two make a photographers job easy.

Oh, how did this picture happen in here. To say that the grandchildren where adorable is an EXTREME understatement.

I just loved watching the guys try to figure out how to unwrap tulle from the trees. The ladies joked that it took less time for them to put it up.

There is nothing better then watching a bride frolic after grandkids, I LOVE this shot.

These ladies are seriously the best fun at a wedding, I think I may hire them to come along with me every time. Not only did they want to recreate the Survivor scene, they also created their own version of a Flat Stanley to include their friend who could not be there for the wedding. Unfortunately, at the end of the night their friend had a little too much fun.

Beth + Mike | Appleton Wedding

Beth and Mike love running, that is how they first found each other after all. It took a little bit of coaxing from Beth's father for Mike to give Beth that initial call. It also came as no surprise to me that their wedding day would be so seamlessly put together. Every detail was perfectly put together, and even the rain cooperated to finish up with enough time to brush off the seats outdoors and leave the sky open with gorgeous overhead light. Beth quickly admitted that her lovely Mom had a hand with many of the touches throughout the day. That leads me to think that she may have a calling as a wedding planner because everything was so divine, from the locations and flowers, right down to the beautifully detailed place cards -- I kept mine by the way, it is now adorning my inspiration board in my office.

I think the moment that made me smile the most was immediately after the ceremony hearing their oldest daughter ask Beth, "Mom, can you help me with this." I forget what she needed, help with the pins in her hair, maybe something on her dress. But just hearing her say the word, "Mom," I thought it was so lovely. This lovely family was already a beautifully crafted unit fitting seamlessly together. Mike dotingly attends to all three of his girls, there really is such a sweet and patient love there and so easy for any spectator to see.

Alright, enough of my doting, onto the photographs:

I love this moment, Beth's parents gave each other the high five after they walked her down the aisle, I can only speculate that it is because they approve of Mike :-)

All jokes aside, this new family really adores each other . This is one of my favorite photos, Beth and Mike gave their parents roses during the ceremony, and the look on Beth's Mom face shows all the love she had for her new son.

Right before the ceremony it sprinkled, but before we were to go out the sky cleared up and the seats were wiped off. As the ceremony finished this gorgeous light peaked out from behind the clouds, simply picture perfect.

Can I just say that this cake was absolutely amazing! Each layer looked as decadent as the next. The slice I picked I think was a chocolate blueberry, and simply delicious.

I just love Beth's laugh!

Another windy shoot, but I think that it adds a bit of drama. Luckily for me Jan and Jim are both troopers and willing to go, climb, sit on, and pose anywhere in order to achieve some amazing shots. Doubly-amazing, Jan is also the proprietor of Simplicity Healthworks out of Appleton, WI. In addition to an array of holistic care services, she is also a wedding celebrant! Their wedding is just around the corner, so today is a sneak peak at what is to come.

Heather + Eric | Engagement + Family

Gorgeous family. Check. Wicked wind. Check. Unknown fund raising walk at our location. Double check. If the blustering winds were not enough, unbeknown to us there was a Diabetes's Walk happening that day and ending up at the park we were going to photograph at. But like champs, Heather, Eric, and the kiddos were game to move locations and still end up with some pretty darn amazing photos.

To say that I love the this family's sense of humor is an understatement, I have a feeling that the wedding is going to feel like one of the Clark family reunions. If I was not photographing it, I would probably crash it because it is going to be so FAN-TASMIC (yes -- I had to make up a word to describe the magnitude of its awesomeness)

I had to get a few photos of the younger members of the family, and this series is by far one of my favorites -- no trees were hurt by the power of this young climber.

Yup, the sun was bright, but I still love the expressions from the guys. Don't worry Heather, you look gorgeous!

A Country Girl Obsession

Small town roots are something to make a girl proud of. I grew up in a medium sized town, but most of family lived on farms just a short bit away. My summers were filled with playing with cousins, riding horses, and playing on four-wheelers. I was rough-and-tumble kid with scrapped up knees from May to October.

Growing older I've settled into a town lifestyle, but there is one thing I still keep -- good ol' country music. Nowadays I love finding new indie artists and rockin' bands, and own an unhealthy amount of CDs from known and virtually unknown bands. But deep down I still have a heart for my country boys.

One of my favorite country artists is the one-and-only Keith Urban. Armed with only my point and shoot, I headed out to his concert this past weekend with my fabulous friend fully ready to loose my voice singing along to all of my favorite songs. So if you are like me and would like a little Keith eye-candy, take a gander. The old theatre techie in me was also pretty darn impressed with their use of the LCD back panels. While I go on swooning about Keith, here are some photos to enjoy.

The Zak Brown Band opened up the show and ended their set with a song I had on repeat for while--"Chicken Fry".

And then the screaming really began. I admit, I may have lost my composure for a little bit.

Concerts are the reason I never complain at receptions about dark lighting conditions. At receptions I have some control over how much light I can send out with my flash. At a concert with those beaming lights, and just a point-and-shoot, you just have to take it as it comes. But I still had fun playing around with the results, spot lights are pretty darn amazing strobes after all.

Beth + Mike | Engagement

I simply love it when a couple is just so relaxed with each other and willing to go with the flow. You can just tell they are in sync with each other, and the most important thing is more then just the details of planning the wedding, it is the knowing that the wedding is only the beginning. Such as the story of my two long-distance runners, Beth and Mike, who fell in love and now are only a week away from saying "I do." The entire time I was shooting this session I was thinking two things; 1) the light outside today is just yummy gorgeous; and 2) this couple is even more gorgeous! I knew before I even started to process the photos that this was going to be a visual treat.

It was at this point I thought, are you kidding me?!? Even this amazing sun flare does not match up to the awesomeness of Beth and Mike!

I know these two are easy going when I suggested that there was this great spot by the water to capture some amazing photos. One catch, there would be a swarm of lake flys buzzing around. They did not even bat a lash, if I said we could get an awesome photo they were willing to do it--what troopers. And, I think we did get some fan-tabulous photos as a result!

Yes, these two are pretty much two of a whole, perfectly in sync with each other. Truly, their wedding is going to be an amazing celebration.

National Pet Week | Photos

I have mentioned before that I am pretty much a cat lady, but this past week there was reason to celebrate -- it was National Pet Week. The folks over at the American Animal Hospital hosted a fantastic event filled with a blue ribbon pet show, ice cream social, home-made pet treats, a laster therapy demo, and plenty of four legged friends running around. The folks over at Channel 2 news even stopped by for a visit. And I had to post this photo, I told his owner that I am pretty much his new best friend. How can you not love a face like that?
