My husband and I drove along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, over the holidays last year. On this particular day, we got up early and took a helicopter ride along the coast from Peterborough to Princetown, then we drove along the coast near Port Campbell, stopping at all the lookout points along the way.

This photo is of the 12 Apostles off the coast. In geologic terms, the 12 Apostles are called stacks; they’re actually pieces of what used to be the mainland that over centuries have been separated from the coast by the incessant pounding of the ocean waves.

I took this photo in Port Campbell, Victoria, Australia, in December 2009.

I spent my first Christmas and New Year’s in Australia driving with my husband along the Great Ocean Road, which runs along the southern coast of Victoria. We drove inland from Melbourne to Warrnambool and then worked our way back along the Great Ocean Road for about a week. Our first stop was the small village of Port Campbell, where the famous 12 Apostles (a formation of limestone stacks just off the coast) are.

It’s almost impossible to drive very far along the Great Ocean Road without passing some fantastic beaches and beautiful natural scenery. On our way to view the 12 Apostles, we stopped here just to soak in the great weather and check out the beach.

This is another view of the main public beach in Port Campbell (the first view was in my previous post), which I snapped while we were walking out to the dock near the mouth of the small bay at Port Campbell.
