Right now, that song is Bad Times by Imael Angel.

It started with the “da-da-da-da-da” refrain. Before I even knew the title, those few syllables kept pulling me back. Once I learned the name, I started listening past the hook, and the song began to mean more to me.

Once the song had a hold on me, I wanted to know where it came from. Bad Times was released on March 30, 2026. Apple Music credits Bernadett Gango as the songwriter. Gángó is described as a Hungarian-born Reiki practitioner based in England who writes spiritual lyrics and uses AI tools to turn them into complete songs.

That background doesn’t point to one specific event behind the song, and I don’t read it as autobiography. But it explains the emphasis on inner strength. The song isn’t a detailed story about one bad experience. It works more like an affirmation: a refusal to see yourself as a victim, and a reminder that you still have value when life is hard.

A Song About Resilience

For me, the heart of Bad Times is resilience: moving through difficulty without giving in to it. It isn’t the loud, triumphant kind of resilience that makes it into movie endings. It’s quieter and more honest. It admits that things are hard and keeps going anyway. It’s the strength to get up the next morning without having everything figured out, and to trust that a hard stretch is not the whole story of who we are.

The song captures that in its contrast. The title names the hardship, but the refrain is light enough to carry me forward. That’s resilience in miniature: feeling the weight of things without letting it pin me down.

I think that’s where the spiritual and the resilient meet. Resilience isn’t only grit. Sometimes it’s finding a still place inside yourself to draw strength from. At those times, listening feels less like entertainment and more like reflection, even a quiet prayer. I don’t try to analyze it while it’s happening. I just let it be what it is.

The Last Time This Happened

I last felt this way when I wrote Film Dhurandhar, Burning Hearts and Broken Heroes. The music was different, but the pattern was the same. Something catches my ear, curiosity turns into replay after replay, and before I notice, I’m carrying the song around inside me.

Writing about it is how I hold onto that moment. I want to remember more than what I listened to. I want to remember how deeply it reached me.

For Now, This Is My Song

I know this will fade. Another song will come along, my mood will change, and Bad Times will become something I return to now and then instead of every day.

A song doesn’t have to explain my life or solve my problems. Sometimes it only has to meet me where I am, give a feeling a shape, quiet my spirit for a few minutes, and remind me that I can get through hard times. That’s enough to make me press play again.

But for me, a far deeper question is WHY the Universe exists at all. This is the fundamental mystery Religions have wrestled with throughout human history. Regardless of whether their answers hold up, asking "why" may well be the most vital exercise for any conscious mind.

Working in AI every day, this question hits close to home. We often dismiss these systems as mere "fake intelligence," but I keep coming back to a single benchmark: Will AI ever genuinely wonder why anything exists, or will it simply grow more sophisticated at answering how—the very utility we build it for? True intelligence may not lie in mastering the mechanisms, but in possessing the capacity to pause and wonder why there is a mechanism to solve in the first place.

Film Dhurandhar: Burning Hearts and Broken Heroes

I am in the middle of my Christmas vacation with my wife Shusmita, son Ahyan and daughter Suhaila trekking through the landscapes of South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. While the views are breathtaking, the soundtrack to my trip is undeniably intense. I found myself listening to two songs on repeat—Fa9la and Ishq Jalakar—from the colossal hit, Dhurandhar.

The movie has already crossed 1051 crore rupees worldwide, becoming the 7th highest-grossing Indian film of all time in just 24 days. But beyond the box office numbers, Dhurandhar offers a cultural mirror that I haven't seen in years.

The Titans: Ranveer vs. Akshaye

I admit, I have tried not to like Ranveer Singh for many years. But in Dhurandhar, he won me over completely. Gone is the manic energy; instead, we get a calm, composed, ferocious look that is terrifyingly quiet. If we are comparing recent alpha-male cinema, Ranveer in Dhurandhar is miles ahead of Ranbir Kapoor in Animal.

And yet... he is completely outshined by Akshaye Khanna.

Akshaye’s portrayal of the anti-hero Rehman Dakait is the stuff of legends. I can only compare his performance to Amjad Khan’s Gabbar Singh or Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. People compared Bobby Deol’s villain arc in Animal to this, but Akshaye wins on all fronts. He is menacing, unpredictable, and charismatic.

But the song that moved my soul is Ishq Jalakar.

Sachdev took a 1960s Qawali (originally sung by legends Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, and Asha Bhosle) and fused it with contemporary EDM. It sounds risky, but it is better than the original. It perfectly captures Ranveer’s state of mind: a convicted prisoner on a suicide mission to infiltrate a Pakistani terrorist group, trying to find meaning in the jaws of death. Listening to Ishq Jalakar while traveling, I realized how much the concept of the Indian Hero has shifted.

In my generation, that rage subsided. We leaned into longing, desire and romantic rebel, typified by Shah Rukh Khan. The hero wasn't fighting the system; he was fighting for love and personal fulfillment.

But my son’s generation—Gen Z—is different. And Ranveer Singh’s character represents them perfectly. They aren't looking for righteousness (Amitabh) or romance (SRK); they are looking for identity.

Why? because today:

- Careers are unstable
- Identities are fluid
- Futures feel postponed
- People are over-qualified but under-settled
- They are connected yet lonely, informed but uncertain

When Ranveer’s character walks to the beat of Ishq Jalakar, the lyrics speak to this specific void:

“Aadhi banke aaya hoon, mera hausla bhi ayyāsh hai” (I arrive incomplete... even my courage is indulgent/reckless)

This is not weakness; it is self-aware brokenness. It rejects the idea of the "pure hero." It embraces the contradictory modern self.

The refrain, “Na to karvan ki talash / Na to hamsafar ki talash” (No search for a caravan, no search for a companion), hits hard. The protagonist isn't looking for a crowd or validation. He is simply trying to survive himself.

Gyan (Knowledge) spoke first: "Look, these are lion bones, probably six or seven years old. I know the anatomy." 👉 Knowledge is simply knowing the facts and data.
Buddhi (Intelligence) analyzed it: "If the bones were fresher, a lion might still be nearby. We need to interpret the situation and look out." 👉 Intelligence is understanding, analyzing, and interpreting the facts.
Chatur (Cleverness) tried a risky trick: "Watch this! I have a spell that can arrange these bones and bring the lion back to life—just to prove my unique skill set." 👉 Cleverness is using quick tricks, shortcuts, or skills, often just to show off.

The lion roared back to life and immediately attacked and killed the clever but reckless Chatur. From the tree, Pragya said, "Cleverness without wisdom destroys itself." 👉 Wisdom is the ability to see the consequences and choose the right, safest, and most meaningful path.

We need all four qualities in life, but the story shows that Wisdom is the ultimate quality that governs the rest. Without it, even the most brilliant knowledge and intelligence can be self-destructive.

Here is the difference in one simple line:

Wisdom tells you whether you should.

A Personal Goodbye to Danya: Remembering GM Daniel Naroditsky (1995–2025)

The news that American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky passed away yesterday, October 19th, has left the global chess community in stunned silence. At just 29, Danya, as he was affectionately known, was a brilliant competitor, a prodigious talent, and a phenomenal educator whose infectious enthusiasm made chess accessible and captivating for countless people. His passing leaves a profound void.

While the world knew Danya for his incredible achievements—a grandmaster by 18, a U12 World Champion, and a five-time U.S. Championship competitor—my memories of him are more personal, rooted in the Bay Area chess scene. It felt like he was a constant presence at the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club, often immersed in a game, or just as frequently, holding court during one of his insightful lectures. He had a way of breaking down complex ideas into digestible, engaging lessons, making even the most intricate positions seem approachable. His passion for teaching was palpable, and I, like many others, spent countless hours trying to absorb his wisdom from the audience.

I’ve lost more games to Danya in various arenas than I care to count—usually in spectacular fashion—but there is one memory that stands out above all. It was 2014, and he hosted a massive simultaneous exhibition against 50 opponents or so, not in the usual club setting, but outside at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. It was a beautiful day, and the contrast between the calm natural surroundings and the intense chess struggle was striking.

I found myself opposite him, playing the black pieces, and somehow, through pure stubbornness and maybe a little help from the chess gods, I managed to steer our game into an exchange up position where Danya had to go for a defence so that I can't break through him. He put enough counter chances that I had no way to push forward any further without heavy risk of loosing.

As he glided by my board, already well into the final stages of the simul, Danya paused for a second longer than he had for any of the other boards I saw. He gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod and extended his hand. Draw agreed.

Here's the picture from that unforgettable day: That single half-point, earned against the Grandmaster, outside in the sunshine, was a highlight of my amateur career. It wasn't just the result; it was the moment of quiet acknowledgment from a player who always treated the game, and those who played it, with immense respect.

The chess world has lost one of its kindest, most talented, and most eloquent voices. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the Charlotte Chess Center community. Thank you, Danya, for all the inspiration, all the joy, and for that unforgettable half-point. You will be deeply missed.

An Eventful 2024: Wrapping Up the Year in Los Cabos, Mexico

What a year 2024 turned out to be! Filled with exciting travels, major family milestones, my first layoff in career and even unexpected political developments back in Bangladesh, this year has truly kept me on my toes. As December rolled in, my wife Shusmita, our son Ahyan, and our daughter Suhaila joined me in a final adventure to close out the year in Los Cabos, Mexico. It was the perfect finishing touch to an eventful twelve months.

A Year of Travel, Celebrations, and Challenges

Guys’ Trip to Las Vegas (September)
In September, I took a “guys only” trip with some friends to Las Vegas. We laughed nonstop, enjoyed some shows, and simply took a break from the daily grind. Vegas never disappoints when it comes to letting loose!
Elk Meadow Cabins at Orick, CA
Later in the year, eight families/friends teamed up for a serene getaway to Elk Meadow Cabins in Orick, California. Nestled among giant redwoods and scenic trails, it gave us the perfect blend of nature and bonding time.
Political Shifts in Bangladesh
2024 will also be remembered for the violent downfall of the fascist Hasina government in Bangladesh—a momentous shift. I participated in protests both online and in the Bay Area, supporting the push for democracy. Then, one of my role models, Nobel Laureate Dr. Yunus, stepped up to lead the interim government, kindling hope for a better future in my home country.
Career Ups and Downs
This year brought a personal career challenge: getting laid off for the very first time in my life. While unexpected, it pushed me toward a much-needed Myrtle Beach family trip in South Carolina. A little sunshine and sand always help put things into perspective.
Family Milestones
2024 was big for our extended family, too. We finally hosted the long-awaited, grand 50th-anniversary celebration for my parents in Bangladesh. Friends, relatives, and extended family came together to make it an unforgettable day.
Meanwhile, my son Ahyan graduated and moved to the University of Miami to study Musical Theatre. Before he officially started classes, we managed a couple of short trips to New York and Florida—quick but memorable getaways to set him on his path.
Road Trips Galore
Taking my friend Nayan—who flew in from Bangladesh—to Las Vegas by road for his business seminar in the U.S. was another highlight. Road-tripping is a fantastic way to see America’s diverse landscapes.
And speaking of road trips, I had a memorable drive through Monument Valley with my friend Wali Bhai. Watching the sun set against the iconic red rock formations was a spiritual experience, to say the least.

Ending 2024 on a High Note in Los Cabos

After such a whirlwind year, it felt only right to wind down in a place known for relaxation and adventure alike. Our Los Cabos trip came about rather spontaneously—but turned into the perfect culmination of 2024’s highs and lows.

ATV Zip Car Thrills
One of our favorite activities was tearing across the dunes in an ATV zip car. The roar of the engine and the spray of sand added an element of thrill to our beach vacation. Ahyan, always our little daredevil, took the passenger seat for an up-close taste of desert adventure.
Bike Ziplining
Riding a bike while ziplining—yes, really—was one of the most surreal experiences we’ve had. Pedaling above the desert at sunset, gazing out at the golden terrain, gave us a bird’s-eye view of the vast Mexican landscape.
Nighttime Camel Trek
Imagine the gentle sway of a camel beneath a star-dotted sky. It’s not every day you picture yourself on camelback in Mexico, but Los Cabos made it happen! The kids adored feeding the camels, and Shusmita found the entire moonlit experience almost dreamlike.

Even though it was somewhat last minute, my RCI membership helped secure discounted rates on lodging and activities. It took some of the financial sting out of planning a spontaneous trip, allowing us to splurge on extra adventures.
Relaxation, Mexican Style
Of course, we balanced out the adrenaline with downtime by the beach, sampling fresh seafood, and exploring local markets. Suhaila brought home handmade trinkets while Shusmita and I enjoyed sipping on ice-cold drinks under a warm sun.

Looking Ahead

As we said adiós to Los Cabos—and to 2024—we couldn’t help but reflect on how much this year has changed us. From witnessing significant political events in Bangladesh, to celebrating family milestones, to crossing new travel adventures off our bucket list, we ended the year feeling both grateful and inspired.

Where will 2025 take us? Who knows? But after the roller coaster that was 2024, I’m excited to see what the future holds.

Why I’m Voting for Change: A Call for Anti-War Leadership in 2024

As an American, I’m increasingly troubled by our country’s role in Middle Eastern foreign policy. Despite their domestic differences, both major political parties continue to follow a strategy of military intervention, regime change, and arms deals that destabilize regions and cost countless lives. Watching these policies unfold year after year, it’s difficult not to feel disillusioned.

Once again, we’re faced with candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, neither of whom promises a meaningful shift away from this destructive path. Both candidates represent parties with a long history of interventionist policies that have harmed innocent lives abroad and left our veterans struggling with trauma here at home.
I recognize that change won’t come overnight. It will take time for a third party to rise as a real alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. But we have to start somewhere—just as others have throughout history. I’ve often heard the argument that “there is no alternative to the Awami League in Bangladesh because other parties are weaker or worse.” But a student-led revolution proved that idea wrong when a repressive government was forced out and its leader, Sheikh Hasina, had to flee. This shows that change can happen when people unite and push for it.

For those disillusioned with U.S. foreign policy, we have two strong third-party candidates this year: Jo Jorgensen from the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein from the Green Party. While I respect both candidates, Jill Stein stands out because of the Green Party’s clear anti-war stance.

Debate on voting for a third party has also gained momentum among American Muslims, with respected scholars like Yasir Qadhi weighing in. In the video below, he highlights that a third-party vote sends a powerful message to the major parties, showing them that they have failed to address the values and needs of minority communities, particularly those of Muslims.

Here’s why I’m voting Green in 2024, and why I encourage others to consider it:

1. An Anti-War Platform

The Green Party’s commitment to peace is a primary reason for choosing Jill Stein. Our involvement in the Middle East has often been justified under the banner of democracy or national security, yet these interventions frequently lead to human rights abuses and suffering for ordinary people. The Green Party’s platform aligns with my belief that America should step back from policies that perpetuate endless conflict.

2. Prioritizing Diplomacy Over Military Spending

Both major parties continue to increase military spending, creating a defense budget that overshadows funding for healthcare, education, and climate action. Jill Stein advocates for reallocating resources away from defense spending and toward social services, reducing our financial and moral debt from unnecessary wars.

3. A Shift in Foreign Policy

The Green Party envisions a foreign policy that prioritizes diplomacy, international cooperation, and respect for sovereignty over unilateral action. This kind of policy can restore America’s image abroad and foster a more peaceful world. The Green Party consistently opposes interventions that put American lives and taxpayer dollars at risk without ethical justification.

4. The Importance of Starting Somewhere

If we want a truly representative democracy, we can’t keep waiting for change to come from the same parties that have failed us. A vote for Jill Stein is a small but powerful step toward a larger movement. It sends a clear message to the major parties: both of you have failed to deliver the peace and security Americans need. Just as we’ve seen in history, even an “impossible” movement can gather strength over time if people believe in it.

A Crypto Miracle: Turning a $70K Loss into an $89K Gain

I have an unbelievable story to share with you all—it's been a rollercoaster of emotions this past week!

Remember back in 2017 to 2019 when I was diving deep into the world of cryptocurrencies? I participated in a bunch of ICOs for small cryptos across various exchanges. To be honest, it didn't go as planned, and I ended up losing about $70,000 USD. It was a tough lesson, and I kind of stepped away from the crypto scene after that.

Fast forward to about a week ago, I received an email from KuCoin, one of the exchanges I used back then. The email mentioned that KuCoin is closing its operations in the USA and that if I had any coins left, I should withdraw them within the next few days. I was swamped with other things and didn't think much of it—I assumed maybe I had a few dollars left at most. So, I didn't even open the email immediately.

Today, I finally had some free time and decided to check out that email. After a lot of trial and error (I hadn't logged into that account in five years!), I managed to access my KuCoin account. Navigating the old Korean exchange platform was a challenge, especially since I had forgotten most of my login details.

And here's where it gets crazy: I discovered that the coins I had left in that account had grown to $89,000! I was absolutely stunned. I thought maybe there'd be $50 or so left, but nearly $90k? I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

But the adventure didn't stop there. I faced a new hurdle—I couldn't withdraw the funds because I had lost access to my Google Authenticator 2FA. It was a stressful few hours trying to recover that. After a lot of back-and-forth and perhaps a few new gray hairs, I finally managed to move the coins to my MetaMask wallet for BNB and to Trust Wallet for KCS.

Now, the next step is cashing out. I applied to Binance.US so I can convert the BNB to ETH and then transfer it to Coinbase to cash out. Of course, I had also lost my Binance.US 2FA, so that added another layer of complexity. I've submitted all the necessary documents, including my driver's license, and now I'm just waiting for them to verify my account. Hopefully, in the next three business days, I'll be able to access the funds.

Here's the most amazing part: I recently lost my job, and things have been pretty tight financially. To stumble upon this unexpected windfall feels like a miracle. It's as if the universe—or perhaps a higher power—found a way to keep me afloat when I needed it most.

Taleb touches on everything from uncertainty and randomness to human nature and how much we actually don't know. I finished the Audible version and liked it so much that I ordered the hardcover, because, like those two books, I plan to read it every once in a while. I've been pondering a topic that's universally relevant yet rarely discussed - death and the anxieties it evokes. As I delve deeper into understanding it, I feel compelled to share my thoughts and invite your perspectives.

Some of you might know of my deep-seated fear of death. I've grappled with it for a while, seeking ways to lessen its hold on me. This fear transcends the physical aspects of dying, like illness. It's a more profound existential concern.

For a while now, I've been contemplating two main approaches to comprehending death: through a religious lens and a secular one. As a Muslim, I've dedicated significant effort to understanding the purpose of life and death within the Islamic framework, and I find comfort and coherence in its teachings.

However, I've also explored death from a purely secular perspective, but haven't yet unearthed anything particularly groundbreaking.

This has led me to wonder if my fear stems from a fear of missing out (FOMO) – the idea that the universe will continue to thrive long after I'm gone, and I won't be a part of it. To address this, I considered the possibility that as I age, and perhaps life's novelty wanes (though thankfully, that hasn't been the case so far!), my attachment to this FOMO might lessen. Perhaps, it could eventually lead to indifference towards death, or even a preference for it as life loses its luster.

Is this just a theoretical notion, or could it hold practical truth? The image I've attached (an old woman, presumably content) gives me a glimmer of hope that such acceptance might be attainable.

As the fresh breeze of 2024 begins to unfold its chapters, I find myself pausing to reflect on the whirlwind that was 2023. It was a year that brought with it a multitude of experiences, emotions, and milestones. Here's a look back at some of the highlights that made 2023 a year to remember.

A Year in Books

My journey through the pages continued unabated as I devoured 126 books. This is the highest number of books I have ever finished in a single calendar year. The majority were audiobooks, perfect companions during my travels and downtime, but I also treasured the tactile feel of paperbacks and the convenience of Kindle reads. Each book was a new adventure, a new learning experience, and a new perspective gained. I started the year with a target of 60 books but crossed that mark halfway in the year and hence targeted for 100 books, which also I crossed within the first 10 months. My 2024 target will be again 60 books.

On the Road

Speaking of adventures, 2023 saw me embarking on an epic 8-day solo road trip across the USA, covering 5700 miles of diverse landscapes and stories. I covered Shoshone Falls, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton, Arches National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon amongst others in my Tesla. This grand expedition, along with several shorter ones, was a testament to the joy of exploration and the freedom of the open road.

Professional Milestones

On the professional front, I played a pivotal role in Twin Health's significant Series D fundraising of $50 million. Contributing to this milestone was not just a career highlight but a step toward revolutionizing healthcare of chronic diseases like Diabetes and Obesity through our health tech startup.

Family First

2023 was a special year for family achievements and gatherings. My son, Ahyan Zaman, took a bold step toward his dreams by applying for undergraduate programs in musical theatre. Meanwhile, my wife and daughter had a fantastic trip exploring the rich cultures of Tajikistan and Malaysia. The year began with a heartwarming visit from my parents to our home in the San Francisco Bay Area, filling our space with laughter and memories along with a great Hawaii trip. My brother Russel's first visit led us on a series of adventures across the USA, including a memorable trip to Florida to meet with cousins and New York to meet with my Uncle's family.

New Beginnings and Unexpected Turns

I embarked on a new creative venture, launching my YouTube channel Leader's Whiteboard, where I've delivered 17 episodes so far, aiming to inspire and connect with fellow industry leaders and engineers.

However, life had its twists when my Honda Accord was stolen. Remarkably, with the swift action of LoJack and the Fremont Police, it was recovered within 24 hours - a small saga that reminded me of the resilience and community spirit that we often take for granted.

Looking Ahead

As I step into 2024, I carry with me the rich tapestry of experiences from the past year. It's a mix of knowledge gained from books, the freedom tasted on open roads, the satisfaction of professional achievements, the joy of family time, and the excitement of new ventures.

Epic 8-Day Road Trip Adventure to Far Horizons

Greetings, fellow travel aficionados! Get ready to be swept away on an exhilarating ride as I recount the incredible tale of my 8-day road trip in my Tesla Model S spanning over 5700 miles across the captivating landscapes, magnificent national parks, and cherished memories. Join me as we delve into each day's highlights, from cascading waterfalls to towering summits and everything in between. A little context before you think why I am in a lonely road trip during this summer. My son Ahyan went for a 3 weeks musical theatre summer course in UCLA where I dropped him 15th of July and picked him up from there August 5th at the end of this road trip. My wife Shusmita and daughter Suhaila went for a trip to Malaysia and Tajikisthan 14th July where my mother-in-law joined them from Bangladesh for the Maylasia part of the trip. Shusmita and Suhaila will be back 7th August while I needed to stay within USA boundary just in case Ahyan needs something.

Day 1: Speed and Natural Wonders

Embarking at the crack of dawn (6:45 am), my journey kicked off with an impressive 800-mile drive on day one alone! A picturesque detour led me to the breathtaking King's Beach on Lake Tahoe, followed by a rendezvous with the majestic Shoshone Falls, aptly nicknamed the Niagara of the West.

Day 2: Yellowstone's Marvels

Fueled by an early start and a need for speed, I pushed the pedal to reach a heart-pounding 153 mph en route to Yellowstone National Park. Basking in the glory of Old Faithful Geyser and the vibrant Grand Prismatic Spring, I relished the day's captivating sights. I saw many geysers and hot springs in the park but Grand Prismatic is the epic of all. It's the 3rd largest hot spring in the world and simply breathtaking!

Day 3: Wildlife and the Grandeur of Yellowstone

Yellowstone continued to mesmerize with encounters with diverse wildlife, including bison, elk, antelope, and even a coyote. Yet, the crown jewel was the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, adorned with its upper and lower falls, and a series of panoramic viewpoints that left me in awe. I covered Mammoth Hot Springs at the start of the day and then drove to Lamar Valley primarily to watch the oldest and largest public bison herd in the United States. It was just before sunset when I was able to catch up with the Artist Point after doing small hikes to the falls.

Day 4: Grand Teton's Enchantment

Grand Teton National Park stole the spotlight on this day. A spectacular tram ride in Jackson Hole led me to a mountaintop restaurant (10450 ft above sea level), where I savored mouthwatering waffles while feasting my eyes on breathtaking vistas. I spent some time just sitting out there. Exploring the Natural Museum of Wildlife Art and the iconic Antler Arches of Jackson added a touch of culture to this unforgettable day.

Day 5: Rediscovering Arches

With Yellowstone well explored (barring Yellowstone lake), I altered my plan to rediscover the wonders of Arches National Park one day earlier. Gazing upon otherworldly rock formations like The Windows, Balanced Rock, and Garden of Devils, I embarked on a hike to the upper and lower outlook of the famed Delicate Arch. Nature had its own plans, however, as a sudden storm forced me to admire it from a distance while I was planning to take the 3.2 miles hike to get to it.

Day 6: A Scenic Voyage

Cruising along the Scenic Highway 12 from Red Canyon to Bryce Canyon National Park was a feast for the senses. The mesmerizing "hoodoos" of Bryce Canyon ignited my wonder, Thor's Hammer made me stay in the Sunset point for longer; and encountering horse riders on the way to Sunrise Point added a touch of authenticity. Venturing further, I embraced the vibrant landscapes of Zion National Park, which I likened to a red-hued Yosemite.

Day 7: Theatrical Magic

Diverging from the natural wonders, I made my way back to Los Angeles to witness my son Ahyan's captivating performance in the musical theatre production Into The Woods at UCLA Little Theatre -- a proud parent moment indeed! He had the lead role of Baker and got a lot of appreciation from the audience and other parents of the various performers.

Day 8: Savoring Flavors and Homeward Bound

Before bidding adieu to this remarkable journey, I embraced a friend's recommendation and savored the delights of Bangla Bazar. With Ahyan by my side, I commenced the return journey to Fremont, concluding this unforgettable road trip. To cap off the day, I caught the 10 pm show of Meg 2: The Trench starring Jason Statham at AMC.

What an extraordinary adventure! From nature's grandeur to the magic of theater, this road trip was a true odyssey. Until the next voyage beckons, keep your wanderlust alive and remember, the open road awaits your next exploration!

During this trip I got time to reflect on my life, my long time topics that have been in the back of my mind. Not all of those can be explained in a written format, however, I will try to put a few from those here.

Topic 1: The Meaning of Life

The meaning of life is a deeply philosophical and subjective question that has been pondered by thinkers, philosophers, and individuals throughout history. It's important to note that there is no single definitive answer to this question, and different people, cultures, and belief systems may offer diverse perspectives on the matter. The way I think of it is that meaning of life is not one thing but multiple things. It's not static but dynamic.

Existential Meaning: This perspective suggests that individuals must create their own meaning in life through their choices, actions, and experiences. Existentialists emphasize personal responsibility and the search for purpose in a seemingly indifferent universe.
Religious or Spiritual Meaning: Many religious and spiritual beliefs propose that the meaning of life is tied to a higher purpose or divine plan. Different religions offer various explanations for the purpose of human existence, often involving concepts like serving a deity, achieving enlightenment, or fulfilling a spiritual journey. Being a Muslim, this is also my primary understanding and feeling when I think of meaning or purpose of life - to be able to appreciate the almighty creator. This whole road trip, you may consider as an alternate form of pilgrimage, an awe inspiring journey where I have thinking again and again - "fabi ayyi ala i rabbikuma tukazziban" which means "So which of the favors of your lord would you deny?"
Happiness and Fulfillment: Some people find meaning in pursuing happiness, personal growth, and fulfillment. This perspective focuses on seeking joy, contentment, and self-improvement as essential aspects of a meaningful life.
Connection and Relationships: Building meaningful connections and relationships with others can be a source of purpose for many. Love, compassion, and contributing positively to the lives of others are often seen as integral to a meaningful existence.
Contributing to Society or Humanity: Some individuals find meaning in making a positive impact on society, helping others, or advancing the well-being of humanity. This can include activities such as volunteering, philanthropy, scientific research, or social advocacy. The idea is to leave earth slightly better than when we arrived.
Art, Creativity, and Expression: For some, the pursuit of artistic expression, creativity, and cultural contributions provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Personal Achievement and Growth: Setting and accomplishing goals, overcoming challenges, and continuously growing as an individual can be a central aspect of finding meaning in life.
Nature and the Universe: Connecting with the natural world and contemplating the beauty and complexity of the universe can lead to a sense of awe and wonder, which some people interpret as a form of meaning. In Kung-fu Panda they called it Inner Peace!
Philosophical Inquiry: Engaging in philosophical exploration and intellectual pursuits can be a way to seek meaning through understanding the nature of reality, consciousness, and existence.
Procreation: To some the primary meaning of life is to procreate, to transfer the gene and in the process being used as a vessel for the mechanism.
Death: To some the ultimate meaning of life is to experience death as no one can avoid it.
No Meaning: Some people will eventually conclude there is no meaning of life. A reasonable course of action for them will be to live for the moment.

While I don't agree with all the ones listed above, these are some of the possible meanings that people may resonate with. It's important to recognize that each person's perspective on the meaning of life may be influenced by their cultural background, personal beliefs, experiences, and individual circumstances. Ultimately, the quest for meaning is a deeply personal and ongoing journey that may evolve over time. But what if the meaning of life is a probabilistic thing amongst multiple options that varies with time or context? When we ask someone what is the meaning of life, we are asking them in a particular space and time of their lives (knowing that the meaning or meanings may change over time for that same person). To answer the question, the person will need to evaluate or observe at that point in time what they think. As soon as they make an observation/measurement/evaluation, the meaning or meanings will collapse to them in that time’s state of observation. If you ask that same person at a different time, their observation may be different and you may get a different answer. Let's coin a term for this called Observerism. The idea is influenced by Schrödinger’s Cat being dead and alive (a famous thought experiment in quantum mechanics) at the same time until you make an observation or evaluation.

Topic 3: Dopamine Release

I enjoy the adrenaline rush that accompanies the prospect of locating Tesla superchargers within the required timeframe during my road adventures. The surge of dopamine that floods in when you believe you've averted a potential setback by stumbling upon a supercharger, thereby salvaging your journey, finances, and perhaps even safety, is truly profound. However, what I've come to realize is that even when a supercharger isn't essential, there's still a satisfying rush of dopamine that occurs simply from discovering their availability. Frequently, I find myself pausing to recharge a bit more, even when it's not strictly necessary!

Topic 4: Books Read

I read a lot of books during this, almost all of which are via audible. Here is the list -

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky - this large book was already half read when I started the journey. So I finished the rest of the half in Day 1 of the trip. This is often claimed as the first psychological thriller. Now I am planning to read all of his other best works, notably - The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, Demons and Notes from Underground.
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy - the largest book I read in recent times, 36 hours of normal listening speed. Now-a-days I listen at 1.3x speed in audible for most books.
Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche - a tough one, I will need to re-read it in future. just wanted to get some taste.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare - a small dramatization by Audible
What Is Life? with Mind and Matter and Autobiographical Sketches by Erwin Schrödinger
Candide by Voltaire - a satire
Introduction to the Study of Religion by Charles Brewer Jones - from Great Courses series of Audible
(In Progress) The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud - finished a quarter of this large book in audible format from Youtube. so far its a theoretical but interesting book.

After a delightful Twin Health BBQ Summer Party on July 21st at Half Moon Bay, I embarked on a thrilling 3-day road trip to Oregon and California, aiming to explore the tallest trees on Earth. The journey included visits to Redding, Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic Park, and Redwood National Park.

The expedition began with a leisurely stroll across the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay in Redding, setting the tone for the adventure ahead. The following day involved detours to the Klamath Fort Museum and a visit to Lassen Volcanic Park, but the highlight was reuniting with the breathtaking Crater Lake. Its deep blue waters and vastness left a profound impression, and the lake's significance as one of the world's deepest was noted - 9th overall but 3rd if measured by average depth.

The road trip also included encounters with Mount Shasta, the impressive Shasta Dam, and a return to the Sundial Bridge. The final day brought a rendezvous with the towering giants of Redwood National Park, particularly the awe-inspiring Trees of Mystery. The Avenue of the Giants provided a humbling path through these ancient trees. I was delighted to see the elks just beside my car while driving back through Elk Meadow Cabin where we visited several times in the past.

The journey included a reflection on the extraordinary beauty of Crater Lake and the grandeur of the redwoods. I visited all of these in the past but this time after a long gap. The experience underscored the importance of preserving these natural wonders for future generations, leaving a lasting sense of inspiration and anticipation for future encounters with nature's greatness.

Meeting of Alphas - Kenya Trip 2022

MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE - GRASSLANDS - DAWN

I along with my family and friends were surveying the beautiful landscape of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya in two land rovers. Our drivers took us to a lion family consisting of 22 members, 3 of those are male lions, 8 female and the rest are cubs. From the distance, the magnificent male lions with a powerful, majestic mane emerge, exuding an air of authority and strength. One of those just stopped in front of our cars.

I was murmuring - What a stunning creature!

The lion catches my scent and becomes intrigued, gracefully turning his head towards me just from 5 feet away. My heart races as I realize the significance of this encounter. He is no ordinary lion; he, too, is an alpha, ruler of his own world.

The lion starts with a low growl - Who dares to venture into my domain?

Me (calmly) - I come in peace. I mean no harm to your realm, great lion.

The lion looks at me with a combination of caution and curiosity, recognizing the power emanating from my presence. He nods - You are unlike the others who have come here before. Your aura speaks of authority and strength.

Me (respectful) - As yours does, noble lion. We are both leaders, alpha beings in our own right.

The lion locks eyes with me, a head-to-head eye fight of sorts, where neither of us backs down. The intensity in the air is palpable, each acknowledging the other's dominance and power.

Lion (grudgingly) - I sense no malice in you. Perhaps we are not meant to be enemies.

Me (agreeing) - Indeed. We share this land, and it is not my intention to challenge your rule.

Lion (relaxed) - Nor mine to challenge yours.

A sense of understanding passes between me and the lion, a mutual respect for each other's strength and territory.

Me (smiling) - Perhaps, as leaders, we can learn from one another.

Lion (intrigued) - Indeed. The ways of the human world and the wilderness differ, but there may be wisdom in both.

I and the lion continue to share a moment, the tension of the initial encounter now transformed into a mutual appreciation for each other's roles.

Lion (raising his head) - I bid you safe passage through my realm, alpha of your world.

Me (nods) - And I, too, wish you peace and prosperity, noble ruler of the wild.

As the sun sets on the horizon, I and the lion part ways, each knowing that though your worlds are different, there is a shared understanding and respect for the power that lies within both of you.

Embracing the Unexpected: A Memorable Father-Son Adventure

Life has a way of surprising us with incredible adventures, even when we least expect it. Recently, as I dropped off my son, Ahyan Zaman, in Los Angeles, little did I know that our journey would take a detour leading to unforgettable experiences.

Our first stop was Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park, where we were eager to witness the awe-inspiring General Sherman Tree. As the largest living tree in the world in terms of volume, its towering presence at 275 feet tall with a diameter of 36 feet and an age of 2200 to 2700 years left us in awe of nature's wonders.

Continuing towards the Giant Forest, we encountered an even more astonishing sight - bears! Not just once, but twice, we had the incredible opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, a moment that etched itself into our hearts forever.

However, our adventure took an unexpected turn when we faced a flat tire situation near Bakersfield. Nevertheless, we quickly contacted AAA roadside assistance, and they efficiently helped us replace the flat tire with the spare one, allowing us to resume our journey.

To ensure a smooth ride for the rest of the trip, Ahyan found a 24/7 mobile auto mechanic shop where we acquired a new tire for our rental car, a Dodge Charger. With our vehicle back in top shape, we headed to Kasturi in Los Angeles for a delightful dinner, cherishing the flavors and toasting to the spirit of adventure that had filled our day.

The surprises didn't end there, as I had a wonderful reunion with my friend Chandru, who lives near LA. We met in a cozy coffee shop and delved into discussions about AI, chess, theatre, Marqeta, Twin Health, and more. It was a delightful encounter that added an extra touch of joy to our already exciting day.

From there we went to Aladin Sweets for lunch and then visited Griffith Observatory. We didn't have enough time in hand to attend the planetarium show which I plan to cover in another trip.

Later, after dropping Ahyan off at the UCLA Sproul Hall for his theatre performance summer course, I made my way back to Fremont. Despite the long day, the memories we created together were more than worth it.

With my wife and daughter on a separate journey in Malaysia with my mother-in-law, this impromptu father-son adventure was a cherished opportunity for bonding and creating lasting memories.

Life's unexpected turns often lead to the most extraordinary experiences. So, the next time you find yourself on a journey, be open to detours and embrace the surprises that come your way. You never know when you'll stumble upon an adventure of a lifetime!

A Rollercoaster of Events: Car Theft, Recovery, and another Epic Road Trip

The past couple of weeks have been nothing short of eventful for me. It all started with the shocking theft of my beloved Honda Accord, a car I've cherished since 2009. Little did I know that the decision to install LoJack, a vehicle tracking system, would play a crucial role in the eventual recovery of my stolen car. As fate would have it, amidst this turmoil, my nephew Iram arrived from Toronto, and together we embarked on an unforgettable 2000-mile road trip along the captivating West Coast. Additionally, we celebrated Eid Ul Adha by participating in Qurbani rituals both at home in Dhaka and here in the Bay Area. Join me as I recount this rollercoaster of events.

With a heavy heart, I discovered that my Honda Accord had been stolen from right in front of my house. A recent similar incident involving my neighbor's car heightened our suspicions. I promptly reported the theft to the police, harboring little hope of ever seeing my car again. However, the memory of the LoJack device installed at Fremont Autowest Honda came to mind. Determined to explore all options, I visited the dealership, where I was directed to contact LoJack's customer service. The police added my car to the national stolen car database and remotely activated the LoJack device, which emitted signals within a 3 to 5-mile radius.

Against all odds, just past midnight, I received a phone call from the police informing me that my stolen car had been located. Accompanied by my wife, Shusmita, and armed with the spare key, I rushed to the scene. To my relief, my car was unharmed, parked on a dimly lit street surrounded by other vehicles, some bearing the scars of previous thefts. Grateful and humbled by this fortunate turn of events, I extended my thanks to both the higher powers and the Fremont Police Department for their swift and efficient work in recovering my car within 24 hours.

Coinciding with the turbulent car theft incident, my nephew Iram arrived from Toronto, infusing the atmosphere with excitement and adventure. Undeterred by recent events, we embarked on a breathtaking 2000-mile road trip along the West Coast. Our journey took us through iconic destinations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon West Rim with its awe-inspiring Skywalk, the magnificent Hoover Dam, and the mesmerizing Death Valley's Badwater Basin. The trip offered us unforgettable sights, experiences, and quality time together, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

While immersed in the whirlwind of events, we were also fortunate to celebrate Eid Ul Adha, an important religious occasion, both at home in Dhaka and in the Bay Area. Demonstrating our commitment to tradition and community, we arranged for Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of a cow in Dhaka, and two goats in the Bay Area. These acts of devotion and charity allowed us to connect with our cultural roots and share in the joy of the festival. On the other hand. Suhaila is performing in Ohlone college the musical show "Madagaskar" for 3 days. And it turns out to be by birthday today.

These past few weeks have been a true testament to the unpredictable nature of life. From the shocking theft of my car to its miraculous recovery with the help of the LoJack device, it was a time of intense emotions and gratitude. Amidst these events, my nephew Iram's visit and the subsequent road trip added a much-needed dose of adventure and joy. Furthermore, the celebration of Eid Ul Adha allowed us to embrace our cultural traditions and foster a sense of community.

Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD

I, hereby, declare war against four horsemen of chronic diseases - Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases (heart diseases), Type 2 Diabetes (I am already a pre-diabetic patient) and Neurological Degenerative Disease like Alzheimer’s. This declaration stems from reading a new book that came out in March named Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD. I finished it a few weeks ago and found it very relevant as I have been working on the mission of solving root cause of chronic diseases in an AI-first health tech startup Twin Health.

In this book the author suggests longevity = function (lifespan, healthspan) and thus emphasizing that it's not good enough to live long (lifespan) but we also need to focus on living well (healthspan). One without the other, long lifespan with poor healthspan or short lifespan with rich healthspan, isn’t what most people want. The idea is to build a strategy to prevent chronic diseases instead of treating them after their onset. In other words, the author wants to focus our thoughts around slow death rather than fast death that are caused by accidents, injuries, and infectious diseases. Healthspan, in its most distilled form, is about preserving three elements of life as long as possible:

Brain - namely, how long can you preserve cognition (i.e., executive function, processing speed, short-term memory)
Body - specifically, how long can you maintain muscle mass, functional movement and strength, flexibility, and freedom from pain
Spirit - how robust is your social support network and your sense of purpose

Over the years, medicine has undergone significant transformations. The era of Hippocrates marked Medicine 1.0, which acknowledged that nature, and not the gods, was responsible for causing diseases. In Medicine 2.0, researchers began experimenting and testing hypotheses to develop cures. This approach primarily focused on the germ theory and treating diseases to avoid or reduce the risk of fast death. Although it increased lifespan, it did not prioritize health span. Medicine 3.0, on the other hand, prioritizes preventing the root cause of diseases and maintaining health span, rather than just treating them. This approach highlights the importance of lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and stress reduction to prevent chronic diseases.

The process of regulating blood glucose levels within a healthy range is known as Glucose Homeostasis. The A1C blood test is utilized to determine the average blood glucose level over the past two to three months. An A1C level of 5.1% indicates a normal blood glucose level of 100 mg/dL, whereas a level of 6.5% or greater indicates a diabetic blood glucose level of 140 mg/dL.

In addition, the author discusses the difficulties of conducting long-term experiments on a large scale, which is why Mendelian Randomization is often preferred in many medical studies. Mendelian Randomization is a methodology employed to investigate the causal association between a risk factor and a disease by analyzing genetic variations that impact the risk factor and assessing their impact on the disease.

While consulting for Dexcom on their innovative continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device, the author encountered the Hawthorne Effect. This is a form of human behavior reactivity in which individuals modify an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed.

Metabolic Syndrome (medsyn) is a group of risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Meeting three of the following five criteria indicates signs of medsyn:

High blood pressure - greater than 130/85
High triglycerides - greater than 150 mg per deciliter
Low HDL cholesterol - less than 40 mg per deciliter for men and less than 50 for women
Central Adiposity - weight circumference greater than 40 inches for men and 35 for women
Elevated fasting glucose - greater than 110 mg per deciliter

To prevent cancer, it is recommended to avoid smoking and maintain metabolic health by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. Unfortunately, 77% of the US population does not exercise regularly, which is a significant risk factor for developing chronic diseases. Falls are also a leading cause of death after age 65, and regular exercise can increase muscle mass, reducing the risk of falls.

Incorporating strength training and endurance exercises like hiking with a backpack, cycling, swimming, and boxing can be beneficial for enhancing muscle mass and promoting overall well-being. In terms of nutrition, our understanding is based on either epidemiological or clinical studies. Nonetheless, it is important to note that there is no amount of alcohol consumption that is considered healthy for the body. As a guideline, it is recommended to limit alcohol intake to no more than seven servings per week, with a maximum of two servings per day.

Dietary Restriction can be divided into three categories: caloric restriction (CR), dietary restriction (DR), and time restriction (TR). Caloric restriction involves reducing the amount of food intake, while dietary restriction involves limiting the consumption of meat, sugar, and fat. Time restriction involves reducing calorie intake by practicing intermittent or multi-day fasting. Among these three methods, caloric restriction is the most effective but also the most challenging, while time restriction is the latest trend and the easiest to implement.

Sleep is critical for overall health, and it is recommended to avoid eating at least three hours before bed. Go to bed with a little bit of hunger, and avoid using electronic devices at least two hours before rest. Spending time in a sauna, hot tub, or taking a shower before bed can also promote relaxation. Avoid doing anything anxiety producing 1 hour before bed, for example, reading work email. The room and bed should be cool, ideally in the mid-60s, and darken the room enough that you can’t see your hand. Sleep 8 hours (preferably 9) before when you need to wake up.

After reading the book, I feel strongly inspired to create a personal plan for preventing or delaying chronic diseases and leading a long, healthy, and joyful life. My grandfather lived up to 105 years, and if it is the will of the universe, I aim to surpass that and live until 106 years old.

From West Coast to East Coast

As my younger brother Russel is visiting me in USA for the first time, I took an opportunity to roam around USA with him. First we went to Los Angles-Las Vegas-Grand Canyon Trip and then finished New York-Virginia-Florida trip.

We first drove Friday afternoon (24th February) to Los Angeles where I have a Holiday Inn Timeshare resort booked for us. We ate dinner at Bangladeshi restaurant Aladin Sweets as its open till midnight. We visited Universal Studios Saturday and then had lunch at Kasturi, another Bangladeshi restaurant. Then we drove to Las Vegas reaching late at night.

We took a trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West Rim. On the way back we stopped over to see Hoover Dam. We were in a hurry but we made back well ahead of time for The David Copperfield Show in MGM Grand Las Vegas in the evening. We drove back from Las Vegas to Fremont Tuesday (28th February). On the way, we took a detour to Los Angeles to have late lunch in Kasturi.

After a week gap, Russel and I flew to New York Friday night (10th March). Kakku picked us up Saturday morning from JFK. We had a great time the 3 days we stayed Kakku's home with Mili Aunt, Abir and Roton. Abir and Roton took us to Manhattan and Jackson Heights. Russell met with his school friends Mahfuz and Dhiman while I met with a group of Bangladeshi professionals led by Shahed Bhai. One of those days, Abir, Roton, Russel and I went to 9/11 Memorial Museum in Manhattan that I was waiting to get in for a long time. It was stunning! We missed Asif and Nushrat but they had a video call with us when we were in Battery Park.

From there we went to Virginia (technically Washington DC) via Amtrak, as we wanted to get this train ride experience. Many people in America including myself, never has been to Amtrak. Nody and her partner Russell Syed were waiting for us to have breakfast together. They had another guest Lelin who graduated from Jaago Bangladesh in the past. I took one of their 2 cars to visit Washington DC with my brother Russel (dont worry you will hear of more Russels coming). We covered Library of Congress, Capitol Hill, White House, Great Falls.

We spent the nights with nonstop chatters, laughters and playing 29. Russel's friend Maruf came from Minnesota to join us for a day while his other friend Russel came his daughter one day and with his wife and 2 daughters the next day.

The next afternoon Nody dropped us to Washington Dulles Airport and we flew to Fort Lauderdale Airport, Florida (15th March). I took a Toyota Corolla on rent and then picked up Rumi Apa and Touhid Bhai (Dulabhai) from Miami Airport who flew in from Toronto, Canada. I booked an AirBnB a few weeks earlier where Ripa, Tuhin Bhai (Dulabhai), Siam and Tahira were already there. We reached late but the long unrestful adda started there. Tuhin Bhai also just bought a Toyota Camry XSE V6 for Siam just one day earlier. The next day as Siam and Tahira had last day of school before spring break, we spent more time at home and went in the afternoon to John D. MacArthur Beach. The following day we covered Miami Beach.

We came back Saturday night (18th March) as we had an invitation to attend Sunny and Sanjida's new house at Los Gatos the next day. What a few roller coaster trips we have been through!
