So, I'm out of Maryland, and in Michigan for a little while. The internship was quite an experience. I can't deny that I learned a lot, but I also can't deny that it wasn't quite what I expected. Positive experience, for sure. I know a hell of a lot more about the financial side of landscape design and construction than I used to.

It was really sad to leave Dave and Mary's house. They were tons of fun to hang around with, and couldn't have made me more comfortable and welcome. Dave has been my brother for twenty five years, and I got to know him better in the past two months than the rest of it combined. It makes me wish that we had done more in the first place. Spilled milk! That being said, at least we spent some time together now, and I will do my best not to lose it. Dave is an awesome dude. Mary is an awesome lady. Maggie is an awesome kid. I will miss the three of them a ton. Especially Maggie.

I stopped in Lexington for a couple days so I could take care of our yard, eat some falafel with my friend, Clay, and watch a couple movies. It was all right. Now the yard will grow freely for a few weeks while I hang out in Michigan.

It's awesome to be back here. This is my favorite place, and most of my favorite people are within an hour of me. Crashing with my parents is always great, and relaxing. I went swimming in a pool today for the first time in a long time. I LOVE POOLS. I'll probably be sunburned later. Farmer's tan forever.

My little sister gets home from Canada today, and I'm really stoked on seeing her. Tonight, I will probably go act a fool somewhere. I could definitely use a drink or forty after the past two months.

Our friend Anthony in Lexington is very sick. He found out a little while ago that he is in a pretty bad stage of cancer. He's a great guy, and doesn't deserve it.

Nicola visited me this week, and it was phenomenal. She just got a job as a flight attendant, and she's leaving for Houston tomorrow. I won't see her for another six weeks. That sucks a lot. I get back to Lexington in a little over a week, and I will be on my own. This is an awesome thing for her, though. It's what she wanted to do, and she finally gets to do it!

Anyway, enough of that shit.

She flew in Wednesday night, and we stayed at Dave and Mary's, which was great. I really wish that we could have all hung out more, because I really like Dave and Mary (and Maggie, duh), and I'd like for Nicola to get to know them. There's always the future, especially with motherfuckin' free ass plane tickets. It was a nice night, though. We had some sushi and got to sleep in the same bed for the first time in a long time. The next day, Nicola drove in to work with me and she spent the day exploring DC while I hung out in the office.

Thursday night, we went to Nicola's Aunt Monica and Uncle John's house. They made us some bad ass veggie kabobs and then we hung out by a bonfire, drinking a few beers and gabbing. It was pretty nice. Nicola played all my old bands for them, and then we listened to John's old band, too. Fun night.

The next day, I only worked til eleven, and then we got to hang out for the whole day.

We hung out by Chesapeake Bay for a while.

After that we went and had lunch in Annapolis with Nicola's cousin and her fiancee. That was really nice, too. They're great people. Really funny and interesting.

Friday night we stayed in a hotel in DC on MOTHERFUCKING CAPITAL HILL. That was cool.

Fifteenth floor. We got money flying out our shorts. PRICELINE.COM, SUCKA.

Then we went out in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. That is a pretty fun area. We had a delicious vegan dinner at Asylum Rock and Roll Lounge (which is a fucking awful name for a restaurant, but pretty excellent). Then we drank a bunch and walked around. I had a really great time. I love that girl way too much.

We woke up this morning and laid around watching cartoons for a while, and then had lunch downtown. We went to Arlington to visit a friend of Nicola's grave. That was really sad. It's very strange to see a name on grave that you recognize amongst that massive graveyard. There was a funeral going on, as well. It was really interesting and very formal. Bugle, bagpipes, and doves.

I dropped Nicola off at the airport a couple hours ago. I'm pretty bummed. I'm excited for her, though. She's got a really great adventure ahead of her, and I'm really proud of her that she's going for it.

Now I'm gonna listen to Alkaline Trio way too much til she comes home.

Hey, I bet you want to know what I've been up to lately.

Still rocking the internship in DC. Not actually in DC, but near there. Annapolis area. Wasn't Cuba Gooding Jr in a movie called Annapolis? I think I hate Cuba Gooding Jr. But Annapolis is pretty solid.

Anyway, the internship has been up and down. Some days I help repair fences and frame walls, some days I file bullshit in a basement, and some days I organize computers and answer phones. I'm not very good at answering phones. Fuck if I care about that, though. Everyone who calls is looking for the same two people, so why don't they just answer the goddamned phones? Oh, right, because this is the real business world and that's what receptionists and interns are for. This is sounding more bitter than I intend it to.

Some awesome stuff that's been going on:

I've been getting to spend some time with my older brother, his wife, and their incredible daughter. The three of them have been the best part of my time in the area. They live about an hour from where I'm staying, and I've been hanging with them on the weekends. I haven't spent enough time with my brother in the past, and it's been really great to get to do it now. He's a construction manager around here, so I got to go see his new job site, which is a complete overhaul of an elementary school. That was pretty interesting. He is an awesome dude, and pretty rad to hang around with. His wife is great as well. She's really funny and she works with horses. I had a skewed perspective on horses from living in fucking Kentucky where everyone bets on those poor bastards running around while wearing white suits, stupid hats, and carrying umbrellas for some fucking reason. Visiting the farm that she teaches lessons out of was a good look at a side of that scene that doesn't eat dick. I think I like horses. Anyway, she's awesome, and a pretty lady, so I'm glad my brother's married to her. Not that I wouldn't be happy if she wasn't pretty. It just seemed like an appropriate observation to make? It's true, anyway. I think they make each other happy, and that's what matters, right? That, and..

THEIR DAUGHTER IS MY CURRENT FAVORITE HUMAN BEING.

She's also hilarious. It's so funny to listen to a tiny person repeat words she hears until she figures out what they mean. And she actually seems to like me, which is not commonplace for a person of her age. I like kids a lot, but I tend to terrify them. I love her.

I climbed a hill and two crazy girls told me they loved my outfit, which made me proud because I JUST BOUGHT IT THE OTHER DAY. I resisted the urge to immediately tell them I was engaged because that's how I normally react to compliments and it just makes people think I'm an asshole, when really, I'm not an asshole. I'm just awkward.

Speaking of being engaged, I still miss Nicola. I love that girl.

Tomorrow I'm helping the family I'm staying with lay some stone in their backyard, so I'll try to get some pictures of that and show them to all of you. By "all of you" I guess I mostly mean my mom, aunts, uncles, and other assorted family who look at this blog with any frequency. Yet, I still use foul language. The human mind is a mystery. A goddamn fucking mystery. Sorry, Mom.

After the yard work, I'm gonna try to hang with my brother and co again because that is an awesome thing to do.

Still in DC and missing Nicola a pretty gigantic amount, so here's an old story to cheer myself up.

My friend Jimmy and I used to get annihilated and do the dumbest things possible. We set fireworks off in our sleeping housemate's room, crashed college parties to drink free beer pong beer by losing on purpose (most of the time Jimmy would get his penis out), and caused a general ruckus at any available moment.

Jimmy had this old laptop that died and could not be fixed. Naturally, we decided that we should find a way to blow up its battery, under the assumption that it would be some sort of insane display of destructive force. We tried setting it on fire. It wouldn't work. We tried lighter fluid. It wouldn't work. We ran out of available materials.

We decided to go get some gasoline.

We walked to the gas station (obviously, driving was not an option, so at least there's some amount of responsible thinking going on here) with a gas can and filled 'er up. Upon return to our house, we realized that we really only had one shot at this, and we needed to ensure the maximum amount of guaranteed fuckery possible. We found a cooler, and placed the laptop battery inside. We poured a healthy amount of gasoline in. Standing back and staring at the situation we'd prepared, we realized that neither of us was willing to reach a hand into the cooler with a lighter and start the conflagration. Eyebrows are important. So are arms. Doing as any reasonably intelligent couple of early 20's middle class males would, we make a trail of gas from the cooler and stretching about ten feet away, and balled up some paper to light on fire and toss at the gas.

At this point, some scene setting is necessary.

We lived in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. Not in the country. We had neighbors whose houses could be touched by stretching an arm out a window. We shared a driveway and parking lot with our very cool and super nice neighbors on the south side of our house. There were eight cars in the parking lot, lining each side. The cooler and path of fuel were placed equidistantly from the two lines of cars. We were really drunk, so give me a break.

We lit the paper and tossed it. Have you ever seen gasoline on fire? It's dramatic. The wet line of gasoline on the asphalt immediately became a ten foot high inferno racing toward the cooler. When it reached its destination, a ball of flame exploded into the air, and the flames from the cooler hovered fifteen feet above the ground.

We were at a loss. How we expected something else to happen is beyond me, because if we'd really thought it through, I think we'd have realized that gasoline does not fuck around with fire. That's how people die in car crashes sometimes.

Jimmy ran inside and filled a bucket with water, which he threw at the chaos. Guess what? Water spreads gasoline. The flames, now much closer to the cars, did not recede, but stayed the course. After panicking for a few minutes, I ran inside and grabbed our fire extinguisher, which I didn't know how the fuck to use. After arguing and slapping each others' hands for a minute, we figured it out and put out the flames. We then ran inside the house and turned all the lights off, convinced that someone had seen a massive amount of flames at 1:30 in the morning and reported it to fire department (you know, like you're supposed to.)

No one came.

No lesson was learned.

Also, we told our landlord someone stole our fire extinguisher so we wouldn't have to explain why it was used.

I don't do this kind of thing anymore.

So, this blog has not had a new post in forgoddamnever. There's news, though, yo. Mad news.

So, I (Kellen) got an internship in the Washington DC area for a couple months this summer. That's where I am now. Nicola's Aunt Monica works for a landscape and architectural design and build firm out here, and really helped me out getting me in with her company. She's also letting me stay with her family for the first couple weeks of my time here. It's crazy nice. The family is awesome, and super welcoming, which is way more bitchin' then I could have hoped. Her daughter is a couple years younger than me and about to go into the Navy. She's a cool lady. Her son is in high school, a wicked good baseball player, and apparently a musical genius. Her husband is also rad and was a successful (as in, made money [that's what musical success is, right? {that's right, I used brackets}]) touring musician for like twenty years. They have a studio in the garage/extra building behind their house, complete with one million guitars and keyboards and a Neil Pert style ten million cymbal drumset. I haven't had a chance to rage on it yet, but I will. Polyrhythyms beware. I am coming for you.

Anyway, the internship is pretty wicked as well. The bosses are super fucking intense, but they know their jank, and are respectable, and have been nothing but nice to me thus far. I've been doing labor stuff for the last two days, but they're setting me up a desk tomorrow, which is completely insane. Kellen Macklin: dude with a desk. The projects are gnarly. DC area rich people are different than Kalamazoo and Lexington rich people. They own things like the BET network. I've been working on a subterranean gym. It costs a million dollars. That is a fake amount of money that no one in the real world has. Notice how earlier in this blog post I used the number one million in a hyperbolic and facetious sense. That's because that is a fake number.

So, I'm hanging out two doors down from Chesapeake Bay on an awesome porch in beautiful weather. Things are going fine.

This weekend I'm going to go see my brother, David, and his wife and daughter. I'm really excited to see them. It's been a while, and I'll be about an hour away from them for the summer, so I'll get to see them a lot.

Also, fuck West Virginia. That place is gorgeous, but if you stop at Taco Bell/KFC combination super trough, the inhabitants make you want to kill yourself. I stopped there on my drive, which happened to be on Mother's Day. There was a line of toothless monsters waiting for fried chicken, BECAUSE THEY RAN OUT FOR MOTHER'S DAY. I hope that if I ever bring a bucket of fried chicken from KFC to my mom's for mother's day, she slaps me in the grill.

A few random updates on life:

Picked up the new Defeater record a couple days ago. It's phenomenal. If you like hardcore at all, or if you're into intensely emotional sounding type junk, pick it up. It's called Empty Days and Sleepless Nights. There is no reason for anyone not to like it, unless that person is a fool.

Spring break has officially started for my collegiate ass. I already have my shirt off, obviously. In all seriousness, it's a welcome reprieve from the insane amount of work I've been doing lately.

My homeboy Alex is coming to Lexington tonight with his friend (and dare I say 'my friend?') Matt. That'll be awesome.

Tomorrow my friends Tyler and Jovannah are coming as well. That'll be awesome, too.

Then! Sunday my little brother and his girlfriend Brianna are coming!

Kellen's birthday was yesterday!! We went out to eat and got to sneak in a Mad Men before he had to go back to work. I love him way too much for words and am so happy I get to spend the 10 bizillion birthdays with him.

One of these bdays I am going to actually get him something that will shock his socks off, but this year I got him some new glasses from Warby Parker. They donate a pair of glasses for every pair you buy and they have sweet Vintage styles. I hope he likes them!

Anyway, I love this dude. He is my very best friend and one of these fuckin days we are going to have a bomb ass wedding and all of our very best friends will be there with us.

We took Nicola's mom out to a historic "Shaker Town" about a half hour from Lexington. It was all right. The Shakers were kind of like the Amish, except that they were also celibate. Which is why there are no more of them. Way to go, guys. After spending a couple of hours there, we headed back into Lex for lunch.

We took Nicola's mom to the best restaurant in Kentucky. ASIAN WIND!!!! Best Chinese in the history of China. Excluding China. Maybe. I've never been. Awesome vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous food for everyone. Plus, the most charismatic wait staff ever.

After that, we headed over to the bar in which I work for a couple beers. Nice. Some dude took a picture of us. Thanks, dude.

All in all, a really nice visit with Nicola's mom. We wish we could live closer to both sets of parents. We miss them tons. It was nice to get a taste of the home life for the weekend, though.

Also, cows make more noise than we thought.

Today we are going to find some mischief to get into and show her around this dump.

I went to a pretty rad little punk rock show last night. It snowed and iced all day yesterday, so the turnout was lax, but the bands made the best of it, and I think everyone had a good time. I bet you're all "who cares? let's see some pictures."

Dylan played great as always. He's got the vocals of an angel, and the mustache also of an angel. He played five or six real pretty acoustic numbers and awkwardly addressed the audience between.

Really heavy hardcore from Detroit. I've see these guys before in Michigan, but they have since traded out a vocalist and really improved. Shit was pretty awesome. Somewhere between Ruiner and Most Precious Blood, with a little bit of Reign Supreme.

In fact, I like it so much, that I got some real profane merch from them. I will probably wear this shirt twice, ever.

My new favorite Lexington band. Really nice people, and really good jams. Kind of a garage-y, surf-y, pop punk mix. Really fun and dancey.

Last night we went to see The Dopamines, Off With Their Heads, and Less than Jake at Buster's in Lexington. It was a pretty good time.

Word, so here's how the show went.

Dopamines opened. Those guys are super rad. They play that Ramones-y style pop punk that everyone loves. Myself included. They're also funny dudes. They managed to call Lexington the "worst city in the world." I don't disagree, necessarily. Anyway, they ripped through their set with Roger from Less Than Jake on rhythm guitar, and it was lovely.

Then I drank two giant beers real fast and got drunk.

Then Off With Their Heads played. One of our favorite bands. They played really well, though they played a lot off of the new album "In Desolation," which I haven't listened to enough to sing along much. Still great, and really tight. I gotta say, though, I miss seeing them in basements in Kalamazoo. That shit was always crazy.

Then I drank two more giant beers and we talked to some people. A wasted dude named Joe told us at length how much he loves his wife. Another wasted dude tried to hit on Nicola by saying "I have a medical condition" a bunch of times. Shit don't work, homie.

Then the Supervillians played. Not into it. They seemed well put together, but it's that college dread lock ska type shit. I hate it. Lyrics about "girls with nice tits." Not my cup of tea.

Less Than Jake played last, and killed it. Nicola likes them a lot more than I do, and it was fun to watch her sing along. They're a great live band, though, and super super catchy. They played the hits, I think.

Then we went home and ate cold fries off of the stove.

First off, sorry we haven't blogged in 5,000 years. We have been super busy....I'm lying, actually we have just been super boring. BUT, today we got to hang out the entire day and go shopping and spend some time around Lexington. We attempted at getting tattoos but that was shut down because of numerous obstacles.

We ended up at one of my favorite stores here in Lexington called Street Scene. They have amazing vintage clothes and every accessory ever. I would highly recommend it, plus they have coffee.

After picking up some tickets for the Off With Their Heads and Less than Jake, we stopped by Sqecial to pick up some postcards to send to people. This store has just about everything from weed jank to sweet witch books. Into it. Not the weed jank. Clearly.

Now we both work tonight. Got to get that boom boom boom. I also promise to lead a move exciting life to share con you.

Guess what?

Last night ate a giant bag of dicks. Here's why:

My van wouldn't start. Nicola's car needed to go into the shop, so I had to get my van running in order to take her to and from. So, I called my friend Matt (Like a good neighbor, Matt Clark is there) to come over with his jumper cables and help me out. He obliged, because he is a true gentleman.

It worked! Yes.

So, I drove that sumbitch on down to the gas station to fill 'er up for the impending adventures in car fix-ery. Payed for that gas. Pumped that gas. Put the key in the ignition, turned it. Nothing happened. Motherfucker. I called Nicola to come give me a hand at the gas station. We bought some cables and tried to jump that old van again. Would not work.

This is exactly what I look like.

We came to the conclusion that the battery was dead. So, we went and bought a new battery and brought it back. We got it installed after about an hour, thanks to a kindly man named Mark who had more tools than us. GUESS WHAT? THE FUCKING VAN STILL DIDN'T START.

So, we took a seat in Nicola's car to call a tow truck.

As we're on the phone with The tow people, an SUV comes barreling around the pump and smashes the god damn shit out of Nicola's car.

This seems pretty bad, right?

Well, as we're both getting out of the car to exchange insurance in a calm and normal manner, a man jumps out of the passenger seat and sprints into the horizon, and the SUV peels away.

I chased the SUV so fast that fire came out of my body. This is a scientific fact.

I did not catch it. But, luckily, there was a police car right next to the gas station that saw the whole thing. Lights went on, and cops chased bad guys. Did they catch them? Let me answer that question with another question. Do cops ever do what you want them to? No.

The cops came back and told us that the "suspects" had jumped out of the car while it was still moving, and let it roll into a bunch of cars parked on the street. They ran, and escaped. Oh, guess what else? It was a stolen car. So even though I got the license plate number, it didn't matter.

8:30 - 10:00

We hung around the gas station waiting for tow trucks for both our cars. Only good part of the night: one driver bent Nicola's car back into driving shape, and the other figured out what was wrong with my van and fixed it. So, the night only cost us about one hundred and fifty dollars. Ha. Until we get the bill from Nicola's car.

Paranormal and Psychic Convention.

Today we wanted to get out of the house and do something awesome. I never expected the day would lead us to a The Mystical Paranormal Fair....but it did. Turns out that in Lexington there are a group of ghost hunters called the Ghost Chasers. No joke. it's awesome.

We got to meet Patti Star, who is a world renowned paranormal investigator and the owner of the Ghost Hunter Shop. She even let us take some pictures for le blog.

We ended up sticking around for some of the seminars because we were super curious. The first one was about Mediumship. A psychic medium named Serena Gordon held the seminar and used an EVP to reach some of the seminar members' family members that had passed away.

For you nerds who don't know what EVP is: go back to school. Ghoul school. EVP is short for electronic voice phenomenon, which is when a "medium" (someone who can communicate with spirits) uses an electronic sound recording device to capture the voices of spirits on tape.

Anyway so in the seminar she would ask her technician (a helpful ghost that assists her in contacting specific people on THE OTHER SIDE) to find the spirit of the loved one at hand and then they would talk in a robotic-hard-to-hear voice. It was creepy a little, but cool too. She also shared some stories of her past and things she has seen and figured out using her talent. She was very nice and it was a pretty interesting seminar. She talked a little about assisting with police investigations and such. Kind of silly, but kind of fun.

The next seminar we went to was 'Are you a psychic'. Tina Michelle ran this one and gave us a 50 question quiz to fill out yes or no to. Some questions were 'Do you know when your phone is about to ring' or 'do you often hear radio voices in the other room'. You get it. Then we went over all the questions and found that Kellen has zero chance of being a psychic and I was above normal, but didn't want to stick around to 'see how I could train this muscle to become better with it' so we took off after. We thought it was funny that one would find out that he or she has supernatural powers from a xeroxed 'yes' or 'no' test, but we are not here to judge. We are here to wish we could predict the fucking future.

All in all, it was pretty awesome. They have one of these every month and I think I will be going to the next one. I want to go to more of the ghost hunting seminars because they seem totally cool and you get to learn how to use all the tools. AND we learned that every year they have Scarefest which is a horror and paranormal convention that has horror film actors and people in the business. I am excited for next September because, let's face it, our interest in the supernatural is pretty connected to (and mostly limited to) horror movies. Sorry, psychics. Y'all need to be less like hippies and more like this guy.
