So, my old digital camera, being plagued with a recurring memory stick error up until a couple of hours ago, would not relinquish its bounty of images to me. This device needs replacing very badly, as the percussive maintenance I have discovered that fixes the problem briefly will likely only work for so long.

Here, contained in this slideshow, is what I expect to be the swansong of my trusty Sony Cybershot F707; the saga of my garden. These images start around the end of April and end July 6th. For a few moments today, it seemed to work perfectly - I wasn't going to waste the opportunity that the camera Gods have granted me!

Let me tell you how much gardening really eats up all of my time and energy. So much so, that writing (which was once one of my favorite pastimes) has been backburnered for a while.

I know that the longer I forego exercising my wit, the weaker my wit muscles become. As such, even starting to write now is hard. Getting thoughts organized and capturing fleeting moments of mockery for later writing inspiration seems impossible with the amount of information that crosses my eyeballs every day.

Well, I shall try here to revert the atrophy of my wit with an impromptu internet meme that has made the rounds of many blogs before mine: A top 20 list of interesting keywords used to find this site. Keep in mind that someone out there physically typed these words into a search engine. And somehow landed here.

larping god of war - This was the first 'funny' one I found as I scrolled down the list of keywords. I didn't know LARPers had Gods. But man, church must be fun, what with all those foam weapons and body paint. OK, I need to stop visualizing that right now.
birkana coded decimal - This was the first one that I had no clue what it meant. So of course I looked it up and found this awesome Viking Sliderule! Now I can translate PI into runes. I think.
cursed boots of pain - Long ago, some poor soul sold his handmade leather boots on eBay. In a rare moment of foresight, I copied the entire description for the auction, and it's so funny it is still getting cut and pasted into emails all over the world. I like to think I've done my part to make the internet a better place.
armadillo breadbin - What's this, some strange word association game? Yet another stupid band name? No, just an anachronistic modern gadget that reminded me of a lorica segmentata. All roads lead to Rome, you know.
inconcievable! - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. Apparently, I quote the Princess Bride a lot in this blog.
period not on time - Hmmm. I'm sure the repetitious use of the words "time period" in my blog could misdirect someone here in their hour of need. There is no helpful advice on that subject here, other than go buy a pregnancy test.
photo under a scotsman kilt - There are some things you can't UNsee, you know. Regimental is one of them. Sorry to disappoint, but there are no upkilt shots here. Try that seedy-looking blog down the way there. Buh-bye now.
warcraftitis - A dangerous, contagious disease, affecting some 10 million of us now. Don't come any closer, really. The first thing it attacks is your social life. (Cough, cough - I think I have rez sickness...buffs plz??)
hovercraft construction plans - Curses, foiled again! Next thing you know, my super villain island hideout location will be found, and my plans for world domination will be...wait, did that say hovercraft? My bad. I thought it said orbital deathraycraft.
mad foam skillz - I really want to make a lolcat cartoon to go along with this one. Someone searched online for this! We're doooooooomed!! He will be the next larping God of War!! (See #1)
beer ninja trebuchet - This sounds like the perfect weapon. I'll start building one right away. I'll bring the beer, now who's got the ninjas?
chaucer and a spaceship - Huh? Not that I would be surprised to find out he's from outer space, but I'm just mystified as to how these two things can get put together into a search term and why!??
cloven fruit problems in the sca - This can be taken two different ways: #1 being the problem of cloven fruit not occurring very often. #2 being that it does occur too often, and then what's the problem? Cure for #1: bring your own cloves and fruit. Problem solved. Next?
diy elven ears - Go with latex. I speak from experience.
fashion spandex headbands - Three words that should not, cannot ever be uttered in the same sentence ever again. They form a rare mutually exclusive trifecta. Whoever you were that searched for this and found me, please stop going outside in whatever you think passes for acceptable clothing. Put on a long trench coat and cover it all.
is there a secret mount in wow where you ride chuck norris - I just figured out what I want for Christmas this year. Too bad it doesn't exist.

naked pennsic photos - I may be bawdy, but I'm not stupid. That kind of stuff gets you sued. I've seen nakedness at pennsic, and it was never something I wanted to cherish forever in the form of a photo. Unless of course there's a hot Outlands Duke in the swimming hole, and then it's OK.

Alas, it is an election year in this country. Try as I might, I cannot escape the encroachment of political discussions, advertisements and media. As with anything I'm annoyed with, too much of it pushed into my brain becomes fodder for mockery.

Shindigs abound!

In these uncertain times, it's good to have things to celebrate. In the past month I've gone to a Browncoat shindig, a fun family reunion, an SCA camping event (Crossroads) and finally, finally seen Duran Duran live in concert (that was a 20+ year wait!)

You're probably wondering what Browncoats? Wasn't Firefly and Serenity like, years ago now? Turns out there's a group of dedicated souls called the MileHigh Browncoats in *Colorado that have kept the Firefly party going, having monthly shindigs and raising money for charity. And always, for the last few years, every single shindig has conflicted with other important events on my calender. Until last Friday.

You can hear the appreciative audience woo-hooing and singing along. As the night wore on, and music of the 'verse filled the night air. In infectious happiness made me feel all shiny, and long for the days (three years ago!) when I used to blog about Firefly occasionally...

If only I were a superhero

Once, a great deal of my reading entertainment came from comic books. I've even kept some of them, though my collection is much less than it once used to be. I once subscribed to 5 or 10 titles a month. Ah, those halcyon days of disposable income...

These days most people I know can't afford to finance any sort of comic book habit, though right now is a great time to buy those rare few you've always wanted. Or get a graphic novel or five of a series you liked.

Why now, you may ask? Has some world event caused the bottom to drop out of the superhero business? Yes, there was a catastrophe, but on a local scale. Like a few miles from me.

Mile High Comics has suffered an unimaginable amount of water damage to one of their warehouses, and to raise some quick money, the owner is having a huge online sale. If only I were a superhero, I could have saved them, just in time.

I know it's a tough time with gas being $4 a gallon, but I'm sure going to invest the equivalent of a few gallons of gas to try and help these guys recover. Comics delivered to my door also means I don't have to drive anywhere for my entertainment that evening! Plus, it's just a super thing to do.

On with the details:

Emergency FLOODHELP Comics Sale Begins Today!

Howdy!

I received one of those phone calls yesterday. The kind we all dread, where the news from the other end of the line is all bad. The details are still very sketchy, but the general situation is that a very large water main broke underneath our Thornton, Colorado Mega-Store. The resulting jet of water that burst up through our concrete floor was so powerful that it has been reported to me that it spewed water and mud to a depth of 18 inches throughout the store. Considering that our Thornton Megastore, at 11,000 square feet, is (or was...) the largest comics store in the country, the amount of water that must have been involved was just mind-numbing. It supposedly took the fire department over eight hours to finally pump the water levels down enough in our store to allow the damage control experts to begin the process of cleaning up.

At this point, I have no way of really knowing how much was destroyed. I'm still here in New York, so I have only my imagination as a guide. I do know, however, that the Thornton store contains over sixty 6' high showcases (at an original cost of $1,100 each), 50 shorter cases (at $500 each) as well as another 150 comics bins, new comics racks, and bookcases (average $400 each). All of those fixtures had bases made from particle board, which swells massively when made wet, and then disintegrates into flakes as it dries. As regards to merchandise, the Thornton store contained hundreds of thousands of dollars of retail value in comics, trade paperbacks and hardbacks, toys, collectible cards, posters, and portfolios. How much of that inventory will be salvageable is strictly dependent upon how high the water actually rose, and as to whether the resulting moisture migrated above that level via condensation. With most of our better comics stored well above the ground and protected within plastic sleeves I think that we'll be OK in that regard, but the 100,000+ comics and books which we had displayed at, or near, ground level will be a total loss. Suffice it to say, I just took a savage financial hit. Insurance will cover some of my loss, but it is almost a foregone conclusion that I'll eventually receive only a small percentage of the value of what was destroyed. Sigh...

A couple of quick points about what just happened. First, we have already located a small replacement store in Thornton. William Murakami, our ever-adroit Operations Vice President, is already making arrangements to reopen the Thornton store early next week in this new location, which is only a couple of blocks from the old. Second, I do want to emphasize that the Thornton store contained very little merchandise that was being offered via our online website. Our website inventory is stored primarily in our four warehouses, so our online operations are not going to be disrupted in any way by this disaster. That having been said, it is now very doubtful that I will be attending next weekend's conventions in Knoxville or Richmond. I am still going to try and attend Sheldon Drum's wonderful Charlotte convention (Heroes Con) in two weekends, but that trip is now completely dependent upon my being able to get the flood situation in hand in Thornton. Aside from salvaging what we can from the store and setting up a new one, I also have to dispose of many tons of wet comics and unsalvageable fixtures. Not a fun prospect, at all.

While cleaning up will be my #1 task upon my return, I am also aware that this disaster is also going to negatively affect our cash flow. While we will be able to quickly reopen our Thornton store for our regular customers to pick up their new comics, it is inevitable that losing our biggest store will also cause our cash flow to take a big hit. Knowing that we will eventually receive an insurance settlement provides some solace, but that process can frequently be a very drawn-out process, requiring months of negotiations. In the meantime, there will be many bills to be paid, most of them directly out of my pocket. That being the case, I really have no choice but to ask all of you to please help. Towards more earthy pursuits

Where have I been these long weeks? Not writing much, that's for sure. The DIY bug bit me hard after our *homebrew project.

This project is much larger than brewing, though. Aleksy and I have moved dirt, tilled soil, built frames, and gotten very dirty in the process of transforming our previously weedy, junky backyard into a series of raised beds for vegetable gardening. I've also changed from having a black thumb to something near miraculous: these plants are all thriving.

The transformation is not unlike the one this house went through when we moved in a year ago. Here is proof that I'm not just wasting time on World of Warcraft:

Just look at all that space! And what great weather, though I admit I missed Friday, which had gale force winds. At less than an hour east of Denver, this event has become my choice for SCA events occuring over Memorial Day weekend. I simply cannot afford to drive all the way to Grand Outlandish (400+ miles) just to get sandblasted by the Al-Barranian desert winds.

Death takes its yearly toll

This time of year always seems to rush on by me: no project gets finished, everything falls behind and a lack of sleep means there are just not enough hours in the day. And just as the days get longer, (and SCA event season kicks off) free time just dries up. It's like Life is trying to outrun me. Hence the non-blogging lately...

This time last year I had just moved into my new house, but managed to make it to Crossroads for one night. Crossroads (in the Canton of Hawks Hollow) officially started today at 3, and obviously I'm not there yet. Probably won't be until Friday night. While I would like to say "I'm going to have the best time of my life", this year will be as last was, saddened by the loss of another SCA friend.

Strangely, many of them have died right around this time of year. I've started to believe that Life speeds up for everyone at this time of year, and these are the guys that Life outran.

Slow death of a video card

Fear not, my absence from this place shall soon end! But first I must attend to the death of my video card. I get about 10 minutes now before it heats up enough to turn everything on my monitor into a kaleidoscopic pixel dance.

I think Warcraft killed it, even though there hasn't been much of that lately, as spring gardening takes too much time. I have a backlog of email messages, images to upload and things to write - just waiting for payday to arrive so I can help stimulate the economy.

I think I needed a break from ye olde internet anyway.

Way back in the day, when I first started this blog, I considered many blog platforms. One of them was LiveJournal, which has a thriving community of brilliant geeks.

In evidence of that fact, I present to my readers a few lines from evilrooster:

Maybe I should rewrite "Hero of Canton" in the style of Beowulf? Thankfully I've just finished reading Wealtheow, so I'm in the mood for that. Aye, and there will be a book review sometime soon, it's just a matter of time.

Not just another sword movie

Some of you may have noticed the little graphic down on the sidebar for Reclaiming the Blade by Galatia Films. If not, seek it out and click it. Or you can just wait for the link I'll provide in the next paragraph or so.

When I first heard this film was in production, I pored over their website, as any good fencer would do. A documentary about renaissance swordplay, narrated by John Rhys-Davies? Score points for that. But when I last looked, there were no videos: I had been looking for fight scenes. But I found the Friends of RTB, to which I promptly applied. I wanted very much to help this production see the light of day, for so many good independent films never make it to the screen.

And there I sit, right between the Provo chapter of ARMA and the Chicago Swordplay Guild. Aye, distinguished company. The rest of the cast is not a shabby list of rogues, either!

I'm not totally a medieval girl - I like the Sci-fi too! I used to watch all kinds of shows on TV like Buck Rogers, which is just uber-cheesy to watch today. The following clips are ALL cheese, with one having a bit of medievalism: Morgan Le Fay. Why she takes orders from a talking Godzilla I can't seem to figure out...

I really appreciate that some network executive yanked these projects before any unsuspecting viewers were harmed. I mean, this much cheese could be fatal.

I get snarky about Paris Hilton

No, you never thought you'd read about Paris Hilton in THIS blog, did you? I never thought she would do something even vaguely interesting. But just seeing this made me laugh and cry at the same time.

This mercifully short video clip shows her being escorted up onto a stage at the Miss Turkey 2008 pageant by another dancer. A huge group of talented live musicians are playing, and it's... well... comical, painful and sad all at the same time.

She is so bewildered and completely out of her league. Up against that drummer, all those amazing musicians and a beautiful dancer, the contrast is almost too much. It's sad, really. It's also sad that everyone in the audience and on the stage were probably thinking she has no talent. Yeaaaah, probably.

Probably can't even spell bellydance, either.

Oh, I'm sorry, was that catty? Man, I would so love to just fire off a good rant about the many things Ms. Hilton lacks. But no, I will not sully this blog with the likes of such gossip.

I don't think I can handle too much Paris. She really brings out the wench in me.

Homebrew Happiness

Oh, the yumminess of brewing your own beer. This photo is the *second bottle of organic Nut Brown Ale from our first batch of homebrew, which we opened last Saturday night.

It had a sweet carmel taste to it, and almost no bite - very smooth. It's almost too drinkable. Soon after I took this photo, the third and fourth bottles mysteriously disappeared from the fridge.

That would explain the Sunday morning headache I had.

I created this photo using the techniques and principles of food photography that I have learned over the last 6 months (on a $3000 system) which I was able to replicate using my 7 year old digital camera and cheap materials bought at craft and hardware stores. Huzzah! I guess all I needed was some liquid inspiration!

*What happened to the first bottle? I had only a few moments warning before the historic opening of the 'first bottle', which not enough time to get lights or any kind of backdrop up, and the room was very dim. So quite honestly, the photo sucked.

Foolishness

Happy April Fools Day! I hope none of you were pranked or punkd today.

I really wanted to come up with some super fabulous joke to play on all of my 17 readers...but what with my busy self juggling a full time job, getting back into henna as a business, doing some house renovations and gardening, there's not been much time for creative thought.

There's also a great pile of things to sell which I should start listing online...which brings me back around to that camera upgrade I need to buy.

And, summer approaches, and the event van (iVan) is in need of some TLC before he can hit the road for SCA camping events. Oh, and I've been driving iVan lately as my regular car has decided that the radiator fan should no longer spin.

I am suffering from a severe case of so much to do, so little time.

Henna, Part Deux

Before I ever started writing in this blog, I used to do henna body art as a business. Some of you may actually remember me disappearing from the summer SCA events, because I was always working on weekends.

Well, I decided to pick it back up again, which is why I haven't been posting too much lately. I have been getting my hands used to hennaing again. I thought for sure I had lost some percentage of the use of my hands or something in the last few years since I've done this.

It has been since 2002, officially, but I find it's mostly like riding a bike. A little wobbly at first, but my technique came back after some practice. I'm certainly not going to immerse myself into the henna event lifestyle as much as I did the first time around. No way - I value my sanity. Definitely not working at OZZFEST this time, either. And now there's a partner involved; makes things much more fun and easy.

We decided upon the name Trance Caravan. I'm sure you'll all be wanting to see the photos I've taken of our work over the last few sessions, so visit the gallery, where the most recent photos will appear at the beginning of the slideshow.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival
