some weeks ago, i went to see these three darling girls for a little just-for-fun session - very little planning went into this get together. i've worked with cintha before, but twas my first time working with ika and nenett (and this is her first ever photo-session too!). we hit things off instantly and it just came to me to photograph them fooling around, laughter and jokes around.

i need to get my digital slr fixed ASAP. everything in it is practically fckd (excuse my french) - especially the focusing system. i'm awfully disappointed with myself and my carelessness. and it doesn't help that blogger-upload takes so much out of everyone's photos! sigh. but on a much lighter note though, i'm appointed as one of the official photographers for kinabalu challenge again..! i've forgotten how much i love shooting with a wide, zoom lens so this is a good excuse to work with it again.

i made an impulsive decision to fly solo to north of kuala kumpur to witness thaipusam, a sacred ritual practiced by the hindus - to commemorate lord murugan's battle to vanquish the evil demon, soorapadam, and to obtain spiritual insight, righteousness, to cleanse oneself and to denote gratefulness.

the ritual, in all its glory, was at best a humbling and prodigious experience - i am forever grateful and humbled to have witnessed such great exertion of both physical and emotional devotion to religious observances by hundreds of thousands hindu devotees.

many thanks to marilyn john, for her tips and tricks documenting thaipusam and liyana yusop (and her family) and swee sin for their hospitality while i was in rawang - i am forever in debt for their generous reception and friendship - driving me around in the wee hours to batu caves and cooking up and putting up with my diet. thank you so, so much.

despite being underweight, my healthy appreciation for food resembles to that of a growing boy – my meals are glamorous and multihued, cheap yet exquisitely flavorsome. defiant of prevailing contemporary adult infancy, my epicurean exploits are miserly and imploring – a concept cleverly adopted by Luk Luk 66, a modest snack bar amongst wide-reaching food chains just across its humble lot.

disrespectful of its preliminary concept, Luk Luk 66 wish not to limit itself to vending deep fried delicacies and therefore extended its selection to simmered dainty succulents and herbal refreshments. confined within an unconditioned refectory, you have at your disposal (give or take) sixty six wild dainty treats to choose from – an exciting fusion of everyday favorites to the rather hard to pronounce. served without rice, the skewered treats are delicate, fresh and sensational.

contrary to its haute counterpart, Luk Luk 66 displays considerable deftness through simplicity – the dainty treats are either simmered and/or deep fried without complex, suspicious seasonings – keeping the flavor of the main ingredient intact, without obscuring its authenticity.

the joint really only pulses at night, especially on late frenetic saturday nights and despite the humidity and smoke, the skewered treats are appetizingly inviting. traditionally prepared, Luk Luk 66 offers a faint exotic mix of chinese and malay inspirations. succulent pandan chicken, seafood tofu, lobster globe and crab lumps burst with marinated charms. to complement the savory protein, there are quite a few to choose from; purple cassava rolls, analogue vegetarian goose, salad rolls, fo chu kai and analogue vegetarian chicken flaps – each boasts sweet scrumptious notes.

be prepared also to go weak in the knees over the four seemingly ordinary sauces Luk Luk 66 has to offer; a special mix of belacan, thai sauce, sweet soy sauce and red chili sauce – i’m rather convinced the sauces are blended with some bizarre additional ingredients as they are unbelievably addictive!

Luk Luk 66 is one of the establishments that doesn’t do particularly well, and yet decidedly doesn’t suck either. Luk Luk 66 lacks luminosity and groove contemporary cafes possess, but if you’re anything like me, you’d know it’s not so much about the groove and radiance. radiance is just there to lull your mind into a false comfort zone. It’s about the smack – the relatively unassuming aftertaste and the warm, wet stink in your breath that comfortably weird you out.

Luk Luk 66 is a perfect example of a food establishment taking a simple route to achieve breadth and fullness. located at lintas plaza, price is fixed at RM1.20/skewered dish – it is cheap as it is addictive. you have been warned.
