Homicide rates are related significantly to the per-capita GDP and proportion of people leaving under poverty. A high inequality is also a recipe for increasing homicides rate. This association is more stark in the countries of the Americas. The rise in homicide rates is much higher in Central and South American nations with increasing poverty and inequality and decreasing per-capita GDP, when compared to the rest of the world. The geographic context brings to fore the increasing violence in the American region over and above that can be explained by economic indicators and inequality alone, pointing towards other social reasons for the present epidemic of violence. People, countries and leaders need to identify and intervene promptly before violence becomes the leading killer in the region.

Homicide rates are at an all time high in the Central American region, higher than those being reported in worn torn areas like Iraq and Afghanistan. This speaks volumes of the violence that presently wrecks Central America- Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador in particular.
