Marina Bychkova's Enchanted Dolls

More than mere playthings, Enchanted Dolls are a brand of elegantly sculpted and articulated works of art. Adorned with elaborate costumes and graced with precious gemstones, metals, and rare found objects, each ball-jointed porcelain doll intricately conveys an aspect of our humanity.

As they look back at you, you can see all the things they wish they could say on their expressive faces. These are Marina Bychkova‘s anatomically correct ball jointed dolls. More than just beautiful objects, her elegantly sculpted and meticulously painted works of art are the reflections of her thoughts on numerous social issues and aspects of our humanity.

Marina Bychkova is a Russian-Canadian figurative artist who has been making dolls ever since she was a 6-year-old girl. Some of her earliest memories were of the beautiful dolls she wasn’t able to play with because they only existed inside of her mind. It took her thousand of tries; but, eventually, she was able to bring those dolls into reality. And, from then on, she has never stopped creating her next perfect doll.

During her years as an student at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver, B.C, Canada), she was exposed to social, psychoanalytic, and feminist theories. Since then, she infuses her works with multiple layers of personal, social, and psychoanalytic interpretation.

This piece, for example, is a tribute to breast cancer fighters. It also is Marina’s attempt in working through her personal fear that one day she may be among the numerous women who suffer from this devastating disease.

Depending on the complexity of the doll’s costume, Marina’s dedicates 150 to 350 hours of her life to bring each of her dream dolls into reality. It’s a true labor of love, and it shows.

Akamas Peninsula - saving the jewel of Cyprus

Situated at the westernmost tip of Cyprus , Akamas Peninsula is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world’s heritage. It was the first area in Cyprus to have been proposed as a national park. The peninsula, Akamas, was named after the son of Theseus, hero of the Trojan Wars and founder of the city-kingdom of Soli.

Wildlife protection

Akamas Peninsula itself is a natural beauty varied in its geology. With outcrops, deep gorges of limestone, serpentine, and other igneous rocks, it allows the diversity of soil types and a rich plant life as a direct consequence. Number of plant species found here runs up to 600, with up to 35 of them being indigenous to the island. Among the endemic plant species are alyssum ( Alyssum akamasicus ) as well as the endemic tongue orchid ( Serapias aphroditae ). Rare is also yellow-flowered punctuate orchid ( Orchis punctulata ). In Peyia forest the orchids grow in both abundance and rich diversity. The variety of fauna is also impressive: 168 bird species, 12 mammals, 20 reptiles and butterfly species. Lara-Toxeftra is a Marine Reserve within Akamas National Park , which was established to protect marine turtles and their nesting beaches. Most commonly green ( Chelonia mydas ) and loggerhead turtles ( Caretta caretta ) can be found here. Occasionally monk seal can be still spotted also.

The beach at Lara Bay, on Cyprus's north-west coast, is known as Lara Beach and is a near-deserted sandy strip that is home to loggerhead and green turtles – so loungers and umbrellas are not allowed. Monk seals also dwell in the sea caves around the peninsula.

There are two marked nature trails in the Akamas Peninsula , the Aphrodite Trail and the Adonis Trail, ideal for walking or cycling. A walk along the mountain trails accompanied by the panoramic view of the bay of Polis , is a unique experience. Down at the seaside, diving, or cruising on small craft can be also practiced. You may get a boat-trip to Akamas Sea from Latchi Harbour and choose a bottom-glass boat to discover under sea-surface life.

Blue Lagoon bay

Thanks to the white sands and turquoise water, earning its Blue Lagoon name, this secret little cove on the untouched Akamas Peninsula near Paphos is a snorkeler’s paradise. You can only get there with a 4-wheel drive or by boat.

Avakas gorge

The much talked about Avakas Gorge, yet another trekker’s paradise carved out of limestone rocks rising up 30 metres and winding along the stream that has formed this natural wonder over thousands of years.

Prepare to walk or clamber over slippery stones and rocks along a 3km path and keep your eyes peeled for pine trees, cypresses, junipers, wild fig trees, ferns and oaks as well as a profusion of wild flowers. Prize specimen among them is the extremely rare endemic centauria akamantis with its purple flowers that blossom in the spring.

The encirclement of Akamas by developers is getting tight. Very soon final decisions will be taken for the future of the area. Can we save Akamas, this precious jewel of Cyprus? Yes if we can have it declared first into a National Park.

The environmental organization Friends of Akamas collects signatures for a PETITION through the Internet with the demand for the declaration of the protected Akamas area into a National Park. Cyprus needs the pressure from citizens of all countries towards its government for the proper decision. Cyprus and Akamas need you.

Mediterranean monk seals are nearly extinct and are not only the most endangered pinniped (seals, sea lions, and walruses) species, but are also one of the rarest animals in the world. Their small remaining population is estimated to be less than 400 seals.

Adult male and female Mediterranean monk seals measure about 2.4m in length on average. Adult males have an average weight of 315 kg, adult females are slightly smaller at an average weight of 300 kg. Average life span is 20-30 years.

In Cyprus we have 9 permanent resident monk seal, and the 1 male, Adonis, caters to all 8 females loving needs.

Tamara Levinson-Campos was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and grew up in New York City. At age 15, she represented the USA at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. After being a three time USA National Champion and competing in world class international competitions, she moved on to dancing professionally. She is also the creator of this beautiful, flowing dance inspired yoga form.

The Evzone Tailors of Greece

There are ceremonial guards all over the world, patiently standing watch at this very moment. Of this large cadre, the Evzone Guards of Greece must certainly be some of the most unique. This elite infantry unit of the Greek Army stands guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Parliament Building in Athens. The uniforms were made famous by a band of mountain guerrilla fighters in the early 19th Century war when Greece was fighting to send the Ottoman Turks packing. Historically, the members of this unit are seen as heroes for their courage and outrageous guerrilla tactics.

The Uniform:

The skirt / kids has 400 pleats in it, one for every year of the Turkish occupation. The uniforms are made by special craftsmen and takes around 80 days to make, each hand-embroidered. There are several kinds of uniforms. The Evzones waistcoat takes up to one month to sew, and the world famous shoes, or tsarouhi, all made in the tailor's department of the Presidential Guard training camp.

“You need the patience of a donkey to do this job,” says Vangelis Lazos, the master Evzone tailor, as he embroiders a fermeli (waistcoat), the most challenging part of the unit’s uniform. He learned the craft from his father and now teaches younger generations. The felt is so densely embroidered that its “good side” doesn’t show at all and its reverse is full of needle holes.

“You can tell a man’s character from the reverse. You’ll spot a nervous type from the stitching,” he says.

An Evzone’s costume weighs roughly 10kg while a pair of tsarouchia (red leather clogs with black pompons) weighs an additional 3.5kg.

The inimitable master of the legendary tsarouchia – a trademark of Greece around the world – Giorgos Dermatas is just starting to construct a new pair, using nothing but his hands, two small awls and two lasts.

“We get goose bumps when we see the Evzones on their way to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We check their tsarouchia to see if anything needs to be fixed,” he says.

The smallest size they come in is a Greek 44 (9.5 in the UK or 10.5 in the US) and the largest a 53. The process begins with the cutting of the leather, which is then soaked in water to make stitching easier. The soles are made of cowhide though they look like mahogany. The parts are then sewn together with a waxed cord, also handmade using natural beeswax. Each pair requires more than 600 stitches and 100-120 nails are hammered into the soles. After the tsarouchia are painted and polished, the pompon is attached.

Some say Evzones would conceal a blade in the pompons for use during hand-to-hand combat.

“Let’s give this one a haircut,” says Dermatas as he grabs a pair of scissors and starts grooming a pompon.

“The earth trembles,” he says, pounding the shoe to emulate the sharp stamping of the Evzone’s feet as they march.

Turmeric Milk

Hey lovers...so as you know, there is a much greater awareness for health and well being these days. With the rising numbers of illness and cancer cases, it's essential to not only eat healthy, but also to know what we are putting into our bodies. Were are less and less in control of the quality of produce, and less aware of the source of the product. It's as important to know what you putting IN
to your body as it is, the products you are putting ON to your body.

Today I'm sharing a recipe for Tumeric Milk, you'll also see it online as Golden Milk, via McKell at Nutrition Stripped.

Traditionally Turmeric Milk comes from many Ayurvedic practices and medicine in Indian cultures. Turmeric is nothing new to Eastern cultures, in fact it’s been known as a “healing spice” used to help anything from sore throats, colds, flus, stomach aches to wound healing, abrasions/skin issues due to it’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It's packed with anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants. You can read an article title Science confirms Tumeric is as effective as 14 drugs here.

Turmeric milk is not only high in antioxidants, anti inflammatory compounds, healthy fats (especially when using coconut milk), but also manganese and iron (found in turmeric). In traditional recipes, which include peppercorns, actually enhances the absorption of curcumin (the main component found in turmeric) in our bodies. The ingredients in this recipe actually work in a synergistic fashion, which is fascinating!

TURMERIC MILK

Prep time: 5 minutes
Serves 2

A classic comforting warm and boldly spiced turmeric milk with a hint of sweetness.

INGREDIENTS

2 cups of homemade almond milk
1 tablespoon local honey, optional
1 tablespoon coconut oil, optional
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
small pinch of black pepper and grated ginger (fresh is best)

INSTRUCTIONS

Simply pour all ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to a light boil, whisk to combine ingredients. Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to 20-30 minutes.
Strain the milk if you have large pieces of ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns, etc. To serve, add honey or a dash of cinnamon.
Enjoy warm is best!

Notes

* You may use whatever milk you prefer: I recommend coconut or almond milk.
LOWER SUGAR // use stevia to sweeten

MAKE IT A LATTE!

Using a blender: simply add all ingredients into the blender + 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and blend for about 1 minute. It gets beautifully frothy!

SUBTLE VARIATIONS

Add 2-3 whole cardamom pods while boiling
Add 2-3 whole black peppercorns
Add 2 tablespoons coconut oil
Add more honey or maple syrup to sweeten
Add vanilla extract to taste

Martaki Mataki - Greek spring time traditions

The 1st of March denotes the beginning of spring in Greece and Cyprus and with spring comes the promise of warmer days and a burning sun.

The Greek saying for this time of year is:
“Απού ‘χει κόρη ακριβή, του Μάρτη ο ήλιος μην τη δει”

This means: “If you have a precious daughter, don’t let the sun of March see her”.

In earlier years, a woman’s beauty was defined by her white soft skin.
The tradition says that girls should wear a red twisted thread around their wrists from the first day of spring. This is called a “martaki” or “the little March” and it is worn to protect the young girls from the burning sun.

The “martaki” is worn until the end of March, and then the red and white threaded bracelet is to be hung on roses. They say that by hanging the thread on red roses will redden the young girl’s cheeks and will then be taken by birds to build their nests. You can keep yours for the next spring!

Sean Project: the answer to a cleaner ocean

The mounting plastic waste in the world's oceans has been the subject of of some pretty bold environmental undertakings, perhaps none more so than the Ocean Cleanup Project aiming to eradicate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Seabin Project represents a smaller-scale approach, but it is noble in its aspirations all the same. Installation in ports and marinas sees this ocean-friendly trash can suck up the surrounding debris and even remove oil from the water.

Dreamt up by two Australian surfers who had grown tired of taking to the local waters amid floating plastic and rubbish, the Seabin is basically a water filtering system designed for contained environments like yacht clubs, marinas and ports. Without needing to contend with stronger currents and ocean storms, here it can chip away at pollution in visible areas where there is plenty of human activity

It is installed on a dock and plumbed into a shore-based water pump. With the rim sitting even with the surface of the water, the pump sucks water into the bin and brings the surrounding trash, oil and detergent along for the ride. A removable catch bag made from natural fiber then gathers the debris and the water is pumped through to an (optional) oil-water separator, before being fed back into the ocean once cleaned.

The team were looking to raise 250K and managed to raise just over that amount by crowdfunding. I am so pleased to read about such a worthy cause and a great product design too! I wish the Aussie boys all the best, and I'll have my eye on this product to see how it goes. Hopefully we'll be seeing these bopping around all our marinas very soon.

Larnaca welcomes 2016 with flocks of pink flamingos

Larnaca woke up to a most beautiful sight on the first day of the New Year as some 7,000 to 10,000 of pink flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) flocked to the Larnaca Salt Lake, having fled northern countries which were hit with a wave of heavy winter weather in the past few days.

Larnaca Salt Lake is one of the most important wetlands in Cyprus and it has been declared a Ramsar and a Natura 2000 site. It lies west of Larnaca and consists of a network of four salt lakes, covering a surface area of 2.2 square kilometres – a stone throw from Larnaca International Airport. It is also an area of amazing natural beauty, which has been the natural habitat of sea life for more than 3 million years. In the past, the salt used to be collected on donkeys and stacked up for export but this activity was abandoned in the mid ‘80s.

Besides its picturesque beauty, the lake is the haunt of 85 species of water-birds with estimated populations between 20,000–38,000. It is one of the important migratory passages through Cyprus. Among them are 2,000–12,000 flamingoes (Phoenicopterus ruber) which spend the winter months there feeding off populations of the brine shrimp Artemia salina.

The Larnaca Salt Lake complex was declared as a protected area by a decision of the Council of Ministers in 1997. Recent evidence suggests that contrary to previous belief the greater flamingo, (Phoenicopterus rubber) not only stops over but also breeds on this wetland.

My dear friends over at Anama Wince Concept have done it again: they've transported us on a visual story telling ride. ‘The ‘Anama Concept’ is the result of an inspiring partnership between Oenologist Lefteris Mohianakis & Jewellery Designer Kristina Apostolou. Together, both artists aspire to produce a refined & contemporary Authentic Cypriot product. Not only is the packaging and the content of the beautiful bottle absolutely delicious, but Kristina and Lefteris are authentic and probably the most interesting couple you will ever meet. Their creation: Anama Wine - a modern commandaria wine, embodies all the love, inspiration and authenticity of these two wonderful characters.

Commandaria is a traditional sweet wine made in Cyprus, similar to a port. 'Nama', mentioned in the scripts of Hesiod, Homer & others, is the ancient-original name of Commandaria, is the oldest listed wine in the world, dating back as far as 5,500 years. Produced solely on the small island of Cyprus, Nama was consumed only by the high-elite society & by Royalty, or was offered to the Gods as a libation (sacrifice).

A contemporary concept based on the foundations of the oldest historically recorded wine in the world, “Kyprion Nama”, and its successor, known today as “Commandaria”, thus produced from Cyprus’s indigenous grape varieties Xynisteri (white) & Mavro (red). The limited scale production is made using modern oenological methods and followed by a 2-year aging period in new oak barrels. Finally, the wine’s ‘outfit’ is custom-designed & made on an annual basis. Each & every bottle is labeled using precious materials and bares a unique hand-punched number, thus completing the product’s collectable profile.

To celebrate & communicate the launch of their 5th harvest, 'Anama Vintage 2011, The ‘Anama Concept duo Kristina Apostolou & Lefteris Mohianakis, designed & directed 'The Palate Project'. The brief was to visually portray the complexity & richness of colours, aromas & flavours found in a glass of 'Anama 2011. A number of detailed tastings of the wine were carried out at various stages during the aging process, resulting in an in-depth break down of all the aromas & flavours that can be identified in the wine. These were then colour sorted, resulting in five main colour categories. A sequence of five carefully composed photographs/ moodboards were put together, each one capturing a different essence of the wine palate. A variety of food props, Cypriot delicacies & conceptual pieces were used in order to achieve this. The five images are titled according to the colour-theme : Almond White, Chilly Red, Cinnamon Brown, Smokey Brown & Ruby Red.
