The Inherited Body – În umbra Dochiei

Este o serie de nuduri realizate exclusiv pe film format mediu pentru a păstra fragilitatea și sacralitatea gestului fotografic și pentru a accentua materialitatea timpului – grăuntele vizual devine praf mitologic, iar lumina, o rămășiță a unei prezențe cândva vii.

Fotografiile explorează metamorfoza femeii în cadrul unei vieți marcate de arhetipuri est-europene, transmise subtil, dar persistent, prin familie, tradiție și tăcere. Pelicula devine martorul unei inițieri: corpul traversează copilăria, ritualul căsătoriei, maternitatea și, în final, disoluția.

Peisajul înghețat și ciclic sugerează un spațiu liminal, unde trecutul și prezentul se confundă, iar corpul devine purtător de memorie, istorie și absență. Figura mitologică a Dochiei plutește în fundal ca o prezență primordială — acestea sunt roluri moștenite, toate coexistând într-un singur trup – nu alese, ci transmise iar individualitatea se topește în mit.

Seria preia acest strat mitologic și îl transferă în corpul contemporan al femeii. Mitul Dochiei devine un cadru narativ pentru drumul inițiatic al femeii, o metaforă a presiunii tradiției asupra identității feminine supuse ritmului naturii și culturii, o umbră pe care o lasă trecutul asupra corpului prezent, dar și un simbol al unei memorii corporale transgeneraționale.

Ca în legenda Dochiei, femeia din aceste imagini urcă un munte simbolic: își leapădă chipurile sociale, până când dispare – nu ca o pierdere, ci ca o contopire cu pământul, cu tradiția, cu cele care au fost înaintea ei. Narațiunea devine astfel o meditație vizuală asupra identității feminine ca act de continuitate, de dizolvare și reconstituire.

1. Mlădiță

O prezență tânără, delicată, înconjurată de verdele crud al unei copilării pe cale să se estompeze, pare să se întoarcă spre o origine pierdută. Singurul element viu într-un peisaj inert — ramurile unei identități în formare simbolizează copilăria ca stare de fuziune cu natura, cu instinctul — o imagine a potențialului, a speranței, dar și a vulnerabilității.

Imaginea surprinde o stare de suspendare între ceea ce a fost și ceea ce ar putea deveni. În acest punct de plecare, la începutul drumului, ea nu este definită de cine este, ci de toate posibilitățile pe care le conține.

Fotografia surprinde un prim suflu al unui mit în formare și astfel chestionează subtil implicațiile acestui ritual de trecere, tensionând relația dintre identitate personală și normativitate colectivă.

2. Miră

Figura miresei este aici un spațiu de tranziție, unde corpul devine simultan subiect și obiect al tradiției iar femeia devine un simbol tăcut al predării. Poziția fizică evocă fragilitate, resemnare și supunere, o tensiune între dorința de afirmare a sinelui și acceptarea unui rol predeterminat. Acest gest corporal subtil, aproape teatral, amplifică starea de liminalitate – o zonă de graniță simbolică în care ființa este suspendată între libertatea tinereții și constrângerile rolului impus de tradiție.

Voalul alb, simbol al purității, al supunerii sociale și al transformării ritualice, acționează ca o mască a metamorfozei: el nu ascunde, ci redefinește. Nu are aici o funcție decorativă, ci devine marcator al unei inițieri sociale — o orbire simbolică a propriei voințe. Mireasa nu este o persoană anume, ci o funcție într-un ciclu cultural – un pas ceremonial în pierderea sinelui individual în favoarea continuității sociale. Motivele din costumul tradițional indică apartenența culturală, dar și presiunea modelului feminin transmis din generație în generație. În acest context, imaginea nu este o celebrare, ci o reflecție asupra fragilității și forței de a accepta un destin prestabilit.

3. Mumă

În această imagine figura maternă tronează asemenea unei zeități domestice, așezată în centrul unui altar invizibil. Chipul propriu dispare, iar cel al trecutului este afișat cu solemnitate, nu ca prezență fizică, ci ca amintire întrupată, reprezentată printr-un obiect static, suspendat între memorie și identitate.

Cadrajul, compoziția axială și gestica reținută contribuie la această înfățișare aproape sacrificială. Corpul, nemișcat, învelit într-o liniște rigidă, evocă mai puțin o femeie și mai mult o relicvă a unui mit viu, născută nu din dorință, ci din nevoia de continuitate – o Dochie contemporană, purtătoare de tradiție și de poveri transgeneraționale.

Această prezență este rezultatul unui ritual tăcut al sacrificiului identitar. Femeia nu mai are chip propriu, ci poartă masca rolului transmis într-o linie neîntreruptă de așteptări. Fiecare generație toarce același fir, astfel, ea nu mai este sine, ci simbol. Identitatea femeii dispare în favoarea unei entități colective, o identitate modelată de tradiție și de așteptările sociale. Această fotografie nu e doar un portret – este o icoană desacralizată – în ea se vede întreaga genealogie, dar nu se mai zărește omul.

4. Soroc

O siluetă încovoiată, fără trăsături, pare să se topească într-un gest de abandon, o metaforă pentru sfârșitul eului: în locul unei femei reale rămâne doar un arhetip. Poziția corpului, lipsită de forță sau voință, de o oboseală aproape ritualică, evocă nu doar sfârșitul unei vieți, ci dizolvarea identității personale în tiparul ancestral al feminității transmise.

Femeia devine anonimă, nu mai este privită, ci dispare – se contopește cu scaunul roșu, un simbol al sacrificiului, al pasiunii consumate și al tradiției care nu iartă, martorul etern al unei funcții îndeplinite. Rolul ei este dus la capăt. Figura devine formă pură — un trup fără chip, fără poveste proprie. Nu rămâne decât forma, amintirea, absența.

Această femeie nu este prima și nu va fi ultima. Ea aparține unui lanț ritualic în care viața ei personală nu contează decât în măsura în care poate duce mai departe o moștenire. Moartea ei este doar o predare de torță, o dispariție într-o structură mai veche decât ea — aceea a „femeii care trebuie.” Imaginea închide cercul și, totodată, îl redeschide. Moartea nu este un sfârșit definitiv, ci o revenire în uterul cultural din care se vor naște alte mlădițe, alte mire, alte mume.

Eterna reîntoarcere.

The Inherited Body – In the Shadow of Dochia

This is a series of nudes created exclusively on medium format film to preserve the fragility and sacredness of the photographic act and to emphasize the materiality of time – the visual grain becomes mythological dust, and the light, a remnant of a once-living presence.

The photographs explore the metamorphosis of the woman within a life marked by Eastern European archetypes, subtly yet persistently transmitted through family, tradition, and silence. The film becomes the witness of an initiation: the body traverses childhood, the ritual of marriage, motherhood, and, finally, dissolution.

The frozen, cyclical landscape suggests a liminal space where past and present blend, and the body becomes a vessel of memory, history, and absence. The mythological figure of Dochia hovers in the background as a primordial presence — these are inherited roles, all coexisting in a single body – not chosen, but passed down, where individuality melts into myth.

The series takes this mythological layer and transfers it into the contemporary woman's body. Dochia's myth becomes a narrative framework for the woman's initiatory path, a metaphor for the pressure of tradition on feminine identity, subjected to the rhythms of nature and culture, a shadow that the past casts upon the present body, and a symbol of a transgenerational corporeal memory.

As in the legend of Dochia, the woman in these images climbs a symbolic mountain: she sheds her social masks until she disappears – not as a loss, but as a merging with the earth, with tradition, with those who came before her. The narrative thus becomes a visual meditation on feminine identity as an act of continuity, dissolution, and reconstitution.

1. Mlădiță (Sprout)

A young, delicate presence, surrounded by the raw green of a childhood about to fade, seems to turn toward a lost origin. The only living element in an inert landscape — the branches of a forming identity symbolize childhood as a state of fusion with nature, with instinct — an image of potential, of hope, but also of vulnerability.

The image captures a state of suspension between what was and what might become. At this point of departure, at the beginning of the journey, she is not defined by who she is but by all the possibilities she contains. The photograph subtly questions the implications of this rite of passage, tensing the relationship between personal identity and collective normativity.

2. Miră (Bride)

The figure of the bride is a space of transition where the body becomes both subject and object of tradition, and the woman becomes a silent symbol of surrender. The physical posture evokes fragility, resignation, and submission, a tension between the desire for self-assertion and the acceptance of a predetermined role. This subtle, almost theatrical gesture amplifies the state of liminality – a symbolic threshold where the being is suspended between the freedom of youth and the constraints of the role imposed by tradition.

The white veil, a symbol of purity, social submission, and ritual transformation, acts as a mask of metamorphosis: it does not conceal but redefines. It is not decorative here but marks a social initiation – a symbolic blindness of one's own will. The bride is not a specific person but a function in a cultural cycle – a ceremonial step in the loss of the individual self in favor of social continuity. The traditional costume's motifs indicate cultural belonging, but also the pressure of the feminine model passed from generation to generation.

In this context, the image is not a celebration but a reflection on the fragility and strength required to accept a predestined fate.

3. Mumă (Mother)

In this image, the maternal figure sits like a domestic deity, placed at the center of an invisible altar. Her own face disappears, while that of the past is solemnly displayed – not as a physical presence, but as an embodied memory, represented by a static object suspended between memory and identity.

The framing, axial composition, and restrained gesture contribute to an almost sacrificial portrayal. The body, still and wrapped in a rigid silence, evokes less a woman and more a relic of a living myth, born not from desire but from the need for continuity – a contemporary Dochia, bearer of tradition and transgenerational burdens.

This presence is the result of a silent ritual of identity sacrifice. The woman no longer has her own face but wears the mask of a role passed down through an unbroken line of expectations. Each generation spins the same thread; thus, she is no longer a self but a symbol. The woman's identity dissolves in favor of a collective entity, an identity shaped by tradition and social expectations.

This photograph is not just a portrait – it is a desacralized icon – within it, the entire genealogy is visible, but the individual can no longer be seen.

4. Soroc (The Appointed Time)

A hunched, faceless silhouette seems to melt into a gesture of surrender – a metaphor for the end of the self: in place of a real woman remains only an archetype. The posture, devoid of force or will, with a near-ritual fatigue, evokes not just the end of a life but the dissolution of personal identity into the ancestral pattern of inherited femininity.

The woman becomes anonymous; she is no longer seen but disappears – merging with the red chair, a symbol of sacrifice, of consumed passion, and of tradition that does not forgive, the eternal witness to a completed function. Her role is fulfilled. The figure becomes pure form – a body without a face, without a personal story. Only the shape remains, the memory, the absence.

This woman is not the first and will not be the last. She belongs to a ritualistic chain where her personal life matters only inasmuch as it can carry forward a legacy. Her death is merely a passing of the torch, a disappearance into a structure older than herself – that of "the woman who must."

The image closes the circle and simultaneously reopens it. Death is not a definitive end but a return to the cultural womb from which other sprouts, other brides, other mothers will be born.

The eternal return.

The Fog

Until recently I created exclusively fine art photography but I became interested in documentary photography after starting to document my grandfather's last years, as a very personal and emotional project. Soon after that I was invited by a friend to photograph an event involving children with disabilities. Those experiences have not only taught me a valuable lesson about human life but have also reinforced my interest in this photography genre that I've become very attracted to.

The following is a short photo essay about my 92 years old grandfather's usual hot summer day in his home in western Romania, where he lived for the last 45 years. I took the first photo of the series 7 years ago, without thinking about it as a serious project at that time, I was just enjoying the moment. At the end of August 2015 I came back to him as a subject.

Once a week, on Monday afternoons, on the sound of his radio that plays loud folk music, he prepares his shaving items on the kitchen table almost like a ceremony. They are the same for as long as I can remember: a traditional shaving razor and brush, shaving cream made from soap mixed with water in a sour cream plastic cup, a towel and an old newspaper. Except for the mirror, because he doesn't need it anymore. Over the past years he has gone almost completely blind because he refused to have a surgery that would have partially restored his eyesight.

This whole ritual can take up to one hour as he stops occasionally to react to a noise or listen to some news and discuss it with his wife; then resumes on checking his face meticulously by touch and applying cream and shaving what he has left. After he's done he puts every item back into the black wooden box that I have always liked and spends some more time in the kitchen or in his bedroom listening to the radio. He never turns on the TV during the day.

Late evenings, after dinner, he is always in his bedroom, listening to the TV next to his wife of 60 years. Hanging on the walls behind them are the framed photos of his children: a son he lost young and my teenage mother.

Listening to the radio during the day and to the TV during the evening and night are his only entertainment. He doesn't want to go outside of the house anymore. He now suffers from severe depression and panic attacks and describes his condition as being permanently in a heavy fog.
