Late at night

It’s late at night and I’m still up. Working obsessively, fiendishly, contemplating my future and the things to come. I’d like to say this is an exception, something I rarely do. But it is not. Too often I find myself here, up late, tapping away at a keyboard, dousing my overextended nerves with cheap gas station coffee with the vain and naive hope that it is all leading to something better. Right now, in this moment, I wonder if it is.
There’s a common bond among the folks like me. The workaholics. The smart underfunded set. We see it in the faraway look, the raccoon eyed glaze of our fist morning cup, the exhausted shake of mid morning drudgery. And we promise ourselves that this night will be different, but it is not. It never is. This is time is never different than the last, no matter how often we promise ourselves something different, a better way of being.

For us, there is only the night.

‘Do you think you might come out today?’ I ask. I reach for the curtains and pull them open to show Bon Iver that the day outside is brilliant.

He removes his headphones and squints into the light pouring through the window, illuminating millions of dust particles. He shakes his head.

I take some sandwich dishes and begin to retreat, but he captures my by the wrist.

‘Baby,’ he says, and his voice is broken but warm. ‘I know it’s hard for you when I have to stay in here, but I have to stay until I’ve written a song that’s worthy of the light that warms the earth out there, that’s worthy of the lighted earth that you walk on, my angel.’

And he picks up his kazoo and honks a tune that I think, privately, may not yet be worthy of the sun and earth.
