Connecting to BSNL Broadband using Ubuntu 9.10

So I have this friend who was a new Ubuntu user who wanted to connect to the internet using a broadband BSNL connection.

She asked me how. I told her to use pppoeconf ( which another friend suggested ). Unfortunately it didn’t quite work. She had this broadband modem which was connected to her box via USB. I still haven’t figured out how to connect via the USB interface ( you are welcome to enlighten me ) but if you have access to a LAN Cable and can connect it to your modem then follow these steps :

go to your terminal and run the following command :

$ pppoeconf

its probably found by default in most Ubuntu installations. Install it from your synaptic package manager if you don’t have it. You will get a screen that looks like this :

From here you just press the Enter key at all screens ( just like in Windows, eh? ) until you get to this screen :

You have to choose the option there. You have to remember that pppoeconf is written to configure DSL providers all over the world and their authentication protocols and formats in which you enter the username or password can be different. Once this is done you will have to give the option at a few more screens and viola ! you are done.

If you lose your connection at any time just run

$ pon dsl-provider

and you’ll come back online.

When I passed out of college, I was offered a job (two jobs actually, but one doesn’t count ); but I opted for the enormously risky, but the extremely fun adventure of a self startup company.

This was about four months ago.

I still have those jobs and we’re ( Mahesh, Sreeraj and me ) running our company. Four months into it, I think i can confidently say ” THIS IS IT!!, I’ve found something i wanna do “.

I possibly work much more than i would’ve if i had only taken that job. But that comes with the territory, I guess . I’ve got a lot to do. But I’m making this post anyway ( even though i don’t think its worth the read ) because of this inspiring post i found on my friend’s profile on facebook.

So now what am i upto??,

For those previously unblessed with the heavenly vision that i am ( ), I’m the one sitting in the centre.

I’m teaching Python at CATFOSS now ( moulding more more nerds in my image to be exact ). And I know it should not be allowed but its a pretty cool way to spend time. I realize now why Pramode Sir enjoys teaching so much, you never stop learning when you teach.

And as for my students, they are a pretty cool batch. Really friendly and stuff. They are doing some cool projects here. I’ll be writing in more detail about my life here soon.

Qt Workshop at AWH

The Free Software Users Group, Calicut organized a Qt workshop at the AWH Engineering College at Kozhikode for their MCA final year students. I was asked to introduce them to Qt Programming and Application Development and I chose to do it in Python.

I thought this might be useful for those of you who are searching for an easy and powerful means of creating GUI-driven applications which are platform-independent. So I’ll be posting my “class” and a few examples that we tried out.

We’re Hacking Again…….

After a “short” break I return to active coding/hacking.

What with my laptop getting ruined when my friend Edwin fell on top of (read previous posts) and what with a flurry of exams, i’ve been out of touch with my hacking-karma for the last four two months or so.

So now we, the chipmonks, are at it again. We’re trying to develop some self-proclaimed cool projects which we think could earn us a quick buck.
