quick Google will show many ways to to setup a Linux file server running Samba, most of them however don't work! Some leave out important bits leaving you stuck and some will only work with one version of a specific Distro (but of course don't mention this). I struggled for ages getting Samba to work reliably and made quite a few wrong turns on the way. I was just trying to set up a simple Linux file server to store music, photos etc. but eventually found a foolproof (probably) way to do it. The following works and has been tested several times on fresh installations. This is not meant to be a high security setup, all folders are accessible to everybody for read, write and delete. If you have stroppy teenagers who want exclusive access to their own area on the server, then you can use this as a starting point. A few simple changes would achieve that level of security but it is beyond the scope of this tutorial.

You could of course setup a Windows box running file sharing but there are some good reasons not to. Windows would need constant monitoring to ensure updates are installed (requiring lots of reboots). Windows is very vulnerable to viruses so your virus software will need kept up to date. Windows has no option to setup folder security so if you find you need it in the future you'll have to start again from scratch, Windows is not as stable. I setup a Linux server in 2007 and it ran non stop for 3 years. I didn't have to reboot it even when the Windows PC's got viruses. In fact the Windows files stored on the server were infected with the virus but the Linux operating system was unaffected. Ubuntu Server can be installed on any old PC you have lying around, even a 486. There are other reasons too but enough talk, lets get started, if all goes well this should take no more than an hour or two.

The move aims to restore the ecosystem along the trails, which comprises a vast number of flora and fauna species.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Agency public relations spokesperson Syarif Hidayat added that the high intensity rainfall expected in the coming months also contributed to the decision, as hiking the mountain was considered unsafe.

According to kompas.com, the park also seeks to conduct repair and maintenance of facilities along the hiking trails to increase convenience for hikers.

Syarif said the closure might be conducted for three months or more.

In Indonesia, you have many options to climb, except those of course that have been closed due to weather conditions and preservation purposes, such as Mount Semeru and Mt. Rinjani.

But there are other mountains to climb to mark your New Year, and below are some of the recommended ones as compiled by tempo.co:

Mount Papandayan

Set at 2,665 meters above sea level, Mt. Papandayan in Cisurupan, Garut regency, West Java, welcomes its visitors with unique steam-spewing craters at the beginning of the hike.

Higher up, climbers can marvel at a garden of edelweiss as well as a dead forest with its exotic dry trees, which has become the mountain’s main attraction because its terrain is not difficult to navigate.

Mount Cikuray

Garut, Mt. Cikuray in Dayeuhmanggung boasts a fantastic view thanks to its sea of white clouds surrounding the peak -- no wonder it is called negeri di atas awan (country above the clouds).

The peak is a little bit higher than Mt. Papandayan at 2,821 m above sea level.

Mount Ciremai

Set at 3,078 m above sea level, Mt. Ciremai is the tallest in West Java and serves as a popular destination during year-end holidays. Hikers can reach the mountain from Kuningan or Majalengka regencies. Both have their own challenging treks.

But the trip to the peak will be worth it as it is blessed with a picturesque vista, a crater, sunrise and a sea of white clouds.

Mount Merapi

Situated within Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, Mt. Merapi is famous among New Year hikers as well. Visitors can reach it through two official hiking trails, namely the Selo trail in Boyolali and the Sapuangin trail in Klaten.

Climbers usually set their tents in the Bubrah Market area -- which is set at 2,700 m above sea level -- that is home to a vast rocky area. From this spot, the sandy and rocky gray peak of Merapi can be clearly seen.

But do note that this mountain could be closed down due to volcanic activity, so prepare a backup plan, such as hiking Mt. Merbabu instead.

Mount Merbabu

This Central Java mountain is home to an endless sea of grass, filled with gorgeous Teletubbie-like hills.

Set at 3,142 m above sea level, visitors to Mt. Merbabu can easily view the elegant Mt. Merapi, which is surrounded by white clouds.

Mount Tambora

Situated on Sumbawa Island, Mt. Tambora is located in the same province as Mt. Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara. Those familiar with its name will know it was one of the volcanoes that erupted in 1815.

Tech firms rush out patches for 'pervasive' computer flaw

Amid a frantic rush to patch a computer security flaw, experts struggled Thursday to determine the impact of a newly discovered vulnerability which could affect billions of devices worldwide.

Cybersecurity researchers called for computer systems to urgently install updates a day after the release of details of the so-called Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities affecting the chips powering most modern PCs and many mobile devices.

Researchers on Wednesday published details of the flaw, which unlike many other vulnerabilities stems from the chip itself and how it safeguards private data stored on computers and networks.

The researchers at Google showed how a hacker could exploit the flaw to get passwords, encryption codes and more, even though there have been no reports of any attacks using the vulnerability.

"The full extent of this class of attack is still under investigation and we are working with security researchers and other browser vendors to fully understand the threat and fixes," said Mozilla researcher Luke Wagner in a blog post.

The revelations "attack the foundational modern computer building block capability that enforces protection of the (operating system)," said Steve Grobman, chief technology officer at security firm McAfee.

"Businesses and consumers should update operating systems and apply patches as soon as they become available."

Intel updates

Computer chipmaking giant Intel -- the focus of the first reports on the flaw -- said the company and its partners "have made significant progress in deploying updates" to mitigate any threats.

"Intel expects to have issued updates for more than 90 percent of processor products introduced within the past five years," an Intel statement said.

"In addition, many operating system vendors, public cloud service providers, device manufacturers and others have indicated that they have already updated their products and services."

But John Bambenek, a Fidelis security researcher who works with the SANS Internet Storm Center, warned that it may be too soon to know the extent of the problem.

"This bug is probably worth its name and logo considering the pervasive nature of the vulnerability," Bambenek said in a blog post.

"Contrary to some initial reporting, this is NOT just an Intel bug, it affects AMD and ARM processors as well. These could even be used in cloud... environments to leak memory outside the running virtual machine."

In a web page dedicated to the vulnerability, security researchers said Meltdown and Spectre may "get hold of secrets stored in the memory of other running programs. This might include your passwords stored in a password manager or browser, your personal photos, emails, instant messages and even business-critical documents."

The two flaws "work on personal computers, mobile devices, and in the cloud," the researchers said.

"All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time," Apple said in a post at an online support page

It advised only getting apps from its online App Store which vets programs for safety, and said it has already released some "mitigations" to protect against the exploit and planned to release a defensive update for Safari on macOS and iOS in the coming days.

Some experts pointed out that the only real "fix" in some cases would be replacing the chip itself, which would be a massive issue for the computing industry.

"The good news is patches are out for almost everything," Bambenek said.

"The bad news is, Spectre, in particular can't be completely mitigated by patching as it seems it will require a hardware fix. The good news is that Spectre is harder to exploit."

The US government's Computer Emergency Response Team initially indicated in a bulletin that only a hardware fix would solve the problem, but then removed that from an update.

"Fully removing the vulnerability requires replacing vulnerable CPU (central processing unit) hardware," said the first bulletin.

Guns N' Roses reunion becomes fourth biggest tour ever

The two-decades-in-the-making reunion of Guns N' Roses has become the fourth highest-earning tour in history, grossing $475 million, Billboard reported Thursday.

The music industry magazine and chart-keeper, releasing its year-end calculations of concert receipts, said that Guns N' Roses had surpassed former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters' marathon 2010-13 "The Wall Live" tour.

U2 holds the record with $784 million earned on the Irish rockers' extravagant, in-the-round "360" tour from 2009 to 2011.

In second and third places with just above $500 million each are The Rolling Stones for stadium concerts a decade ago and Coldplay for a global tour completed in November.

Guns N' Roses, whose brash rock took the world by storm in the late 1980s, had been notorious for internal friction, with singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash ending their collaboration in 1993 following a show in Buenos Aires.

After years of lucrative offers, the pair finally agreed to reunite for the 2016 Coachella festival in the California desert.

The reunion became a global stadium tour called "Not in This Lifetime" that has been repeatedly extended and, according to Billboard, has reached 4.3 million fans.

A fresh leg is scheduled for Europe this summer that will close on July 21 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The band is best known for hits such as "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child O' Mine."

The tour, however, does not include Izzy Stradlin, the rhythm guitarist and key songwriter for the band who said he refused as he believed the money would be unfairly divided among the bandmates.

Industry watchers expect big-name concert tours to become increasingly lucrative in the near future, with the number of festivals quickly growing and consolidation of promoters streamlining costs.

Nonetheless, irrigation rice fields would not be successful unless man also has a hand in it.Uniquely, Bali's complex irrigation system has its roots not by order of kings, but its management is very much in the hands of the villagers through village cooperatives. Since farmers depend on the successful irrigation of the fields, the different Subaks form an inseparable bond that unites into a single system.

At the lowest level, each farmer is a member of a subak, whose rice fields are fed from a single dam. The head of the Subak, called the Klian Subak is elected by its members. In the larger Subak that are fed by a canal, the lowest level is called the tempek. The Subaks, in turn are linked to mountain temples or Pura Masceti, which come under the sway of one of two lake temples, these are the Pura Batu Kau which coordinates irrigation in West Bali, and Pura Ulun Danu on Lake Beratan, which coordinates the north, east and south of Bali.

Water temples hold festivals every 105 days, corresponding with the 105 days rice-growing season in Bali. This cycle also determines the time of opening and closing of canal sluices, ensuring that plantings are staggered and that water is allocated in the most efficient and equitable manner.The goddess of Rice is known as Bhatari or Dewi Sri, the mother of Rice. As the Indonesian archipelago's staple food, Dewi Sri is not only venerated in Bali, but also on Java and other rice-producing islands.

By combining sacred traditional values with a highly organized system, therefore, the Subak, the unique Balinese rice farming culture isa manifestation of the Balinese Tri Hita Karana cosmological doctrine. It is the tangible reflection of the original Balinese ideas and beliefs that are essentially rooted in this concept, namely the awareness that human beings need to always maintain harmonious relationship between Man and God, Man and fellow humans, and between Man and Nature in one's daily life. Menjangan Island: West Bali's Best Kept Secret Dive Site

Surrounded by unspoilt white sandy beaches, stunning coral reefs, and enchanting underwater, environment Menjangan Island is a perfect definition of what natural beauty is all about. Located about 10Km North West off the shore of Bali’s mainland, the small island of Menjangan forms part of the West Bali National Park Conservation Area. The word "Menjangan" in the Javanese language means "Deer". According to Wikipedia, the name was given by the local population who observed wild deer herds swimming to the island every spring covering a distance of approx 1.2 miles.

This small island is actually where diving first started seriously on Bali back in about 1978 under the sponsorship of the Indonesian Navy, when it arranged a get-together of the country’s main diving clubs -Possi, Ganesha, Nusantara, and Trisakti. That get-together led to Menjangan establishing itself as the premier international dive location in Bali and many of the attendees went on to become the pioneers of commercial dive operations across Indonesia.

The island itself is surrounded by a coral reef, characterized by deep drop offs of near to 60 meters and by complex rock formations. These distinctive features have given rise to a great number of large and small caves, festooned with sponge and soft corals and often inhabited by large groupers, moray eels and by young snappers and batfish in the smaller caves. The sea beds are also rich in large barrel sponges and vibrant sea fans, some of which are truly enormous. Given the depth, the moderate flow of currents and its protection from strong winds, it is common to see tuna, shoals of jack-fish, batfish, angelfish, sea turtles, and on occasion also sharks, especially off the outer corners of the island.

The island is also known as the location for the best wall diving in Bali, with a very bright & colorful underwater world and lots of different sites to choose from. These dive sites are rich in marine life and sandy beaches to relax over lunch.

At a depth of 45 meters the Anchor wreck is found. Also called the Anker or Kapal Budak (Slave Ship), the site is an old wooden ship wreck sitting on the sea floor on the western tip of Menjangan which is either an 19th century Dutch ship that sunk during WWII or one that sunk much earlier during the Dutch colonial era while supposedly carrying Balinese slaves to Batavia (now Jakarta). The wreck contains a cargo of ceramics and glass bottles and is completely colonized by soft coral; an excellent place to meet turtles and sharks.

Named after a large colony of garden eels, the Eel Gardens dive site lies on the western point of Menjangan in a shallow area with some dazzling white sand that is a pleasant dive in itself. The dive starts on a nice wall (about 40m) with a lot of beautiful gorgonians and other sea fans then continue over the top of the reef to a stretch of white sand. Arguably, some say that this is the best part of Menjangan Island.

And there is a big surprise for macro-photographers, video-operators and marine biologists at the Secret Bay”. In the small bay near the ferry port of Gilimanuk, a strange play in currents has rendered the water temperature here to be more, at most 25 degree C, which has created a habitat for Pacific and Indian Ocean species, with often hybrids between the two. The muddy shallow beds, mixed with algae and debris, are host to truly strange marine creatures, some of which have recently been discovered by marine biologists for the first time, such as the 4 types of anglerfish including the Sargassum Anglerfish, Spotfin Anglerfish and one in particular that has created great interest among biologists, locally called the Tono’s Anglerfish. Apart from the anglerfish, the bay is host to numerous different sea horses, dragonets, ghostpipefish, nudibranches, lionfish such us the Blue Finned lionfish, ribbon eels and much more. Borobudur's first visitors in 2018 honored with elephant ride

The first four visitors to Borobudur park in 2018 had the honor of riding elephants. The lucky visitors were Aziz from Candimulyo Magelang and Toriqul Huda from Yogyakarta, as well Martin from Singapore and Agnes from Poland.

Aside from the elephant ride, they also received souvenirs from park management.

The four elephants took the visitors from the main gate to the Borobudur temple entrance, along with a Bregodo Samber Wulung parade from Wanurejo village, Borobudur regency.

Agnes expressed her delight with the elephant ride, “I am very happy for the appreciation. This is my first time visiting the Borobudur temple and the people here are very nice,” she told Antara.

The president of Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko park, Edy Setijono, said the first visitors' appreciation in 2018 was a realization of the company's service excellence.

“We want to increase our service quality and therefore service is key. We appreciate our first visitors of the year,” he added.

The appreciation, according to Edy, is also part of the park's promotion and will continue on throughout the year although in different forms.

“We want to build the spirit, so excellence should be our services’ core in 2018,” he added.

In 2017, Borobudur temple was visited by 3.8 million tourists, seven percent of whom were international tourists. (asw)

Bali welcomes more American tourists

The number of American tourists arriving in Bali is said to have increased by 18.39 percent year-on-year (yoy) to 164,338 visitors between January and October 2017.

“Most of these US citizens entered through Ngurah Rai International Airport using direct flights; only 3,130 people came via cruise ship,” said Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) statistics distribution department head I Gede Nyoman Subadri in Denpasar on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Based on the number, the US ranked sixth among the top 10 countries that contributed the largest number of tourists to Bali, behind China, Australia, Japan, India and United Kingdom.

Subadri said the US contributed up to 3.27 percent of the total foreign tourists to Bali, which reached 5.02 million during the January-October period. The figure represented a 23.30 percent increase from last year, which means the Island of the Gods welcomed an additional 948,917 foreign visitors this year.

“More Americans traveled to Bali after former US president Barack Obama and his family vacationed here for five days back in June,” Subadri said.

During their vacation, the Obamas visited several tourist attractions on the island, such as the Ubud arts village, Jati Luwih in Tabanan regency and Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring village, Gianyar regency. (kes)

First iPhone X buyer in Indonesia queued from 6 a.m.

Local telecommunication operator PT Smartfren Telecom started selling the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X on Friday, starting from 9 a.m.

Kompas.com reported that at Galeri Smartfren outlet on Jl. Sabang, Central Jakarta, iPhone buyers had begun to queue as early as 6 a.m.

Sofyan was the first iPhone X buyer. He said he queued since 6 a.m. to get his iPhone X 256 GB in silver color.

Sofyan explained that prior to coming to the outlet, he had registered on Smartfren’s website.

Galeri Smartfren division head Ochie Camasosa said that unlike the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus, Smartfren did not receive pre-orders for the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

The mobile phone operator opened registration last Friday, requiring iPhone enthusiasts to register their emails to get a notification for the opening of the iPhone's sale.

5G on course for 2019 launch

The 3GPP, a mobile systems standards body, has now ratified the 5G New Radio (NR) specifications, marking a crucial step in the development of this new telecommunications standard.

This first 5G NR standard opens the door to large-scale tests using existing infrastructure. The 5G networks could potentially be deployed commercially by 2019, but work on all the technical specs for 5G NR is not expected to be completed until the summer of 2018.

For ordinary users, it’s thought that a 5G connection will be at least ten times faster than 4G. 5G is also expected to enable new uses such as streaming in ultra-high definition, the more widespread adoption of the Internet of Things, the development of virtual/augmented reality and the (more or less) autonomous car.

This will evidently require new networks and devices. To that end, Qualcomm has already demo-ed a 5G connection on a modem installed in a test smartphone. This Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G has already achieved speeds of over 1Gbps (gigabits per second) for downloads on the 28GHz millimeter wave frequency band. The company is aiming to get up to 5Gbps in 2018 and launch the first 5G-compatible devices in the first half of 2019.

A slew of announcements about 5G, its networks, content and security is expected at the next Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, from Feb. 26 to March 1, 2018.

Donny the Drone Desires World Domination…For Its Own Good

If you give a drone a voice, it might as well be Guy Pearce‘s. In the sci-fi short film “Donny The Drone,” a sentient drone receives World Time magazine’s Person of the Year award (akin to the real award given by TIME magazine). We see Donny accept the award in a TED-esque style speech — one that will build you up, tear you down, then build you up again.

Donny is a conscious drone, which some experts believe may deserve a limited set of rights in the future. Donny says, “People and machines are not as different as you have been told. We are all citizens of this Earth, and that’s why I stand here in front of you today, not as a drone, but as a man. ”

And Donny wants to take over the world. However, he wants global domination in order to make the world a better place—doesn’t it always start that way? I’m just glad this sci-fi film isn’t about swarms of killer drones because drones can, and likely will, do a lot of good in the future.

Ten MySQL performance tuning settings after installation

In this blog we’re going to discuss the top ten MySQL performance tuning settings that you can implement after an installation.

When we are hired for a MySQL performance audit, we are expected to review the MySQL configuration and to suggest improvements. Many people are surprised because in most cases, we only suggest changing a few MySQL performance tuning settings after installation – even though hundreds of options are available. The goal of this post is to give you a list of some of the most critical settings.

We already made such suggestions in the past here on this blog a few years ago, but things have changed a lot in the MySQL world since then!

Before we start…

Even experienced people can make mistakes that can cause a lot of trouble. So before blindly applying the recommendations of this post, please keep in mind the following items:

Change one setting at a time! This is the only way to estimate if a change is beneficial.
Most settings can be changed at runtime with SET GLOBAL. It is very handy and it allows you to quickly revert the change if it creates any problem. But in the end, you want the setting to be adjusted permanently in the configuration file.
A change in the configuration is not visible even after a MySQL restart? Did you use the correct configuration file? Did you put the setting in the right section? (all settings in this post belong to the [mysqld] section)
The server refuses to start after a change: did you use the correct unit? For instance, innodb_buffer_pool_size should be set in bytes while max_connection is dimensionless.
Do not allow duplicate settings in the configuration file. If you want to keep track of the changes, use version control.
Don’t do naive math, like “my new server has 2x RAM, I’ll just make all the values 2x the previous ones”.

Basic settings

Here are 3 MySQL performance tuning settings that you should always look at. If you do not, you are very likely to run into problems very quickly.

innodb_buffer_pool_size: this is the #1 setting to look at for any installation using InnoDB. The buffer pool is where data and indexes are cached: having it as large as possible will ensure you use memory and not disks for most read operations. Typical values are 5-6GB (8GB RAM), 20-25GB (32GB RAM), 100-120GB (128GB RAM).

innodb_log_file_size: this is the size of the redo logs. The redo logs are used to make sure writes are fast and durable and also during crash recovery. Up to MySQL 5.1, it was hard to adjust, as you wanted both large redo logs for good performance and small redo logs for fast crash recovery. Fortunately crash recovery performance has improved a lot since MySQL 5.5 so you can now have good write performance and fast crash recovery. Until MySQL 5.5 the total redo log size was limited to 4GB (the default is to have 2 log files). This has been lifted in MySQL 5.6.

Starting with innodb_log_file_size = 512M (giving 1GB of redo logs) should give you plenty of room for writes. If you know your application is write-intensive and you are using MySQL 5.6, you can start with innodb_log_file_size = 4G.

max_connections: if you are often facing the ‘Too many connections’ error, max_connections is too low. It is very frequent that because the application does not close connections to the database correctly, you need much more than the default 151 connections. The main drawback of high values for max_connections (like 1000 or more) is that the server will become unresponsive if for any reason it has to run 1000 or more active transactions. Using a connection pool at the application level or a thread pool at the MySQL level can help here.

InnoDB settings

InnoDB has been the default storage engine since MySQL 5.5 and it is much more frequently used than any other storage engine. That’s why it should be configured carefully.

innodb_file_per_table: this setting will tell InnoDB if it should store data and indexes in the shared tablespace (innodb_file_per_table = OFF) or in a separate .ibd file for each table (innodb_file_per_table= ON). Having a file per table allows you to reclaim space when dropping, truncating or rebuilding a table. It is also needed for some advanced features such as compression. However it does not provide any performance benefit. The main scenario when you do NOT want file per table is when you have a very high number of tables (say 10k+).

With MySQL 5.6, the default value is ON so you have nothing to do in most cases. For previous versions, you should set it to ON prior to loading data as it has an effect on newly created tables only.

innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit: the default setting of 1 means that InnoDB is fully ACID compliant. It is the best value when your primary concern is data safety, for instance on a master. However it can have a significant overhead on systems with slow disks because of the extra fsyncs that are needed to flush each change to the redo logs. Setting it to 2 is a bit less reliable because committed transactions will be flushed to the redo logs only once a second, but that can be acceptable on some situations for a master and that is definitely a good value for a replica. 0 is even faster but you are more likely to lose some data in case of a crash: it is only a good value for a replica.

innodb_flush_method: this setting controls how data and logs are flushed to disk. Popular values are O_DIRECT when you have a hardware RAID controller with a battery-protected write-back cache and fdatasync (default value) for most other scenarios. sysbench is a good tool to help you choose between the 2 values.

innodb_log_buffer_size: this is the size of the buffer for transactions that have not been committed yet. The default value (1MB) is usually fine but as soon as you have transactions with large blob/text fields, the buffer can fill up very quickly and trigger extra I/O load. Look at the Innodb_log_waits status variable and if it is not 0, increase innodb_log_buffer_size.

Other settings

query_cache_size: the query cache is a well known bottleneck that can be seen even when concurrency is moderate. The best option is to disable it from day 1 by setting query_cache_size = 0 (now the default on MySQL 5.6) and to use other ways to speed up read queries: good indexing, adding replicas to spread the read load or using an external cache (memcache or redis for instance). If you have already built your MySQL application with the query cache enabled and if you have never noticed any problem, the query cache may be beneficial for you. So you should be cautious if you decide to disable it.

log_bin: enabling binary logging is mandatory if you want the server to act as a replication master. If so, don’t forget to also set server_id to a unique value. It is also useful for a single server when you want to be able to do point-in-time recovery: restore your latest backup and apply the binary logs. Once created, binary log files are kept forever. So if you do not want to run out of disk space, you should either purge old files with PURGE BINARY LOGS or set expire_logs_days to specify after how many days the logs will be automatically purged.

Binary logging however is not free, so if you do not need for instance on a replica that is not a master, it is recommended to keep it disabled.

skip_name_resolve: when a client connects, the server will perform hostname resolution, and when DNS is slow, establishing the connection will become slow as well. It is therefore recommended to start the server with skip-name-resolve to disable all DNS lookups. The only limitation is that the GRANT statements must then use IP addresses only, so be careful when adding this setting to an existing system.

Conclusion

There are of course other settings that can make a difference depending on your workload or your hardware: low memory and fast disks, high concurrency, write-intensive workloads for instance are cases when you will need specific tuning. However the goal here is to give you a few MySQL performance tuning to allow you to quickly get a sane MySQL configuration without spending too much time on changing non-essential MySQL settings or on reading documentation to understand which settings do matter to you.
