On the left, is iMovie. On the right, Final Cut Pro. Some similarities. First off, the fact that NEITHER of them have multiple video, or audio timelines is obvious. Yes, you can have multiple audio tracks, say, audio from the video, and music, but there isn't a separate timeline for each. Yes, they are layered, but its physically one timeline. In Final Cut X, (on the right) you see the video, and audio. Pretty much the same freakin' color. Blue, and green. Yeah, there different shades, but there are other colors. On the right, you also see the same, "fly-out" panels. I said I liked these above, I'm just pointing out how similar the two are.

Now that we've gotten the stuff I like out of the way, we get into the fun, ranting part about the stuff I don't like. It looks like Apple is trying to make Final Cut Pro easier to use for the average person. So more people will for one, buy it, and two, make better, and more professional looking videos. But Apple, thats why they have iMovie. It comes with every Mac, and the average user isn't going to want to spend $300 on Final Cut Pro in the first place. Give them the tools and features they want in iMovie, and stop trying to adapt Final Cut Pro, to them. Leave Final Cut Pro to the professionals. Thats its name. "Final Cut PRO". "PRO" meaning "PROFESSIONAL"! Am I right? Apple's all about ease of use. Mac OS X, prides itself on being easy to use. So it would make sense, that Apple would try and make Final Cut Pro easier to use. But at the same time, while they've made it easier to use, they've stripped it of some of the most powerful, and important features. 

For one, the timeline. There is a reason pretty much every video editing software used by the pros, has multiple timelines. No one has thought of a better way to edit, and cut together video. Its that simple. The timeline has been around forever, there is no reason to change it. I don't mind if they add new features, say, the magnetic timeline. But if you remove the ability to add individual timelines, and easily adjust the length of a clip, thats when I start to have a problem. You might agree with me here. If you don't, thats okay too. I'm just simply expressing my frustration with Final Cut Pro X. And... I'll still probably buy it.

(This is not a review. It is purely my thoughts put on paper… Err, uh.. Computer generated,   paper that is.)
     Let me first start off by saying, if you haven't seen it, go see it! It was absolutely worth the $20. But be prepared to think about it for the next three days afterword. It was mind boggling. Its the type of movie that if you fall asleep for literally 2 minutes, your screwed. The writer of that movie definitely deserves an award, just for writing it! I heard it took $60 million in the first weekend. I was actually surprised when I heard this. I thought it would get way more than that. Practically everyone I talked to said they saw it and liked it. So either the people I talked to were lying, or thats just not true.


     Leonardo Dicaprio gave an amazingly good job performance in this movie. But thats not new… Some times though, there was a little bit of that, "Oh, I know what their going to do." feeling, but for the most part, I honestly couldn't tell you what would happen next. It was that amazing. I said earlier though, it was really tough to fallow. At some points, I wished I could just pause it, and think, really hard, about what had just happened. I mean that in a good way though. When I went to see it, we got there about 25 minutes early, and the entire time I was waiting, I kept saying how I wanted popcorn, but I didn't want to go get it. Then about half way through the movie, I was wishing I had popcorn because it was, "bite your fingernails" intense. So basically what I'm saying, is get popcorn, and save it for those intense parts, because you are going to need it. But I digress.


     Saying that it was the best movie yet of 2010 would be a little bit strange, mainly because 2010 isn't over yet, and there is still time for other movies to be released, but I think  (personally) it was the best movie yet of 2010. Then theres all of the users that have XP, they never upgraded to Vista. Or they upgraded to Vista but then found out they hated it so much that they downgraded back to XP. They were so upset with Windows and the whole Vista thing, they are hoping that Windows will redeem itself with 7, and based on what I've heard about 7, it sounds to me like its doing a very good job!

Then there are the Windows fanatics! That will buy ANYTHING Windows creates! They are just buying 7 because they love Windows. Some of them may actually use it because they want to, and others will use it because they think they have to. As if it's their duty, because they love Windows so much.

So in closing, 7 sounds like a good idea, if you're willing to fork up the $120 price tag! And thats only for the Home Edition! (Which is the bare minimum I believe…) Now I'm a Mac guy myself, but I really wouldn't mind seeing 7 at school, or work. But then again, I really wouldn't mind seeing Snow Leopard either! :)

But removing the FireWire and microphone ports? Come on! Practically ALL video cameras now days use FireWire! (Not those cheap flip cams, but like Sony and stuff…) Not to mention all of those external hard drives! How are you supposed to use them? Buy a USB to FireWire converter? NO! There is a reason to why video cameras and external Hard Drives use FireWire, they're faster than USB! Duh! All those video editors that use FireWire cameras and external hard drives are supposed to do what? Go buy a new camera and hard drive because their computer is to "good" for that "primitive" technology? More than half the world still uses FireWire!

Oh yah, they removed the Microphone port too! Video and sound editors around the world are SCREAMING! How are artists supposed to record something and listen to what they're recording while they're recording it! (Uh… wow!) Its pointless! Removing something that the whole world uses! There is NO reason, and I mean, NO REASON as to why they should have removed the FireWire AND microphone ports! It shouldn't have even crossed their minds! What kinda world is it coming to! Apple, removing the FireWire port from the MacBook line!

On a better note (being extremely sarcastic) the MacBook has a build in battery! So if it decided to just randomly stop working (which I don't think has ever happened) you can't go on eBay, or Amazon and buy a new one and replace it. You have to go to an Apple store and have them do it! (Do you have to pay them to replace the battery? I know you have to pay for the battery itself, but do you have to pay to have them install it and everything?)

This is just ludicrous! I thought Apple was all about making user friendly products? The new MacBook almost seems to be a downgrade from the original! (besides all the RAM and hard drive space) If Apple wants to engineer ingenuitive products, they need to step back and look at what they've done and say "Whoa. What have we done?" But maybe this is what Apple needs. They're treading in shark infested waters, they're pushing the limits to see how far their consumers are willing to go before they all just say "Hay! We don't like this!" 

Now in closing, I love Apple, I love ALL there products, (You might even call me an Apple enthusiast) I just wanted to get my thoughts out on… paper? Now I typed this on a Mac, you might even be reading on a Mac, but don't let it change the way you feel towards Apple.

Full Review:


I installed it twice, and two different ways. One with a live CD I created, which was surprisingly easy fallowing the instructions found HERE. Secondly, with a Jolicloud USB key, which I also created and was even easier than the CD and much faster, using the instructions found HERE.


Using Jolicloud is very simple. Its based off of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, so its very stable. Altho I feel some minor improvements are necessary. For instance, browsing apps is bit more difficult on a smaller screen, this is mainly because of the larger icons, not as many fit on the screen and I find myself scrolling way to much. If possible, they should ad some code to detect your screen size, and display the icons according to how wide, or tall your screen is.

Another major improvement would be for automatic updates. Unless they already have this, and I just haven't waited long enough to let it check for updates itself. :) But I digress. The OS itself is very user friendly, except I haven't found a way to add apps to the home screen manually. 


It is very quick to respond, even though they have this nifty little animation when you open an app on the home screen.


Know I haven't stated that Jolicloud is a modified flavor of Linux. But don't let that scare you! They have taken Linux to a whole knew dimension of faster load time, more functionality, and ease of use. If you've never used Linux, they have made it very simple to use, and even if you are a seasoned professional of Linux, it still has all the extras and functionality you need!

Overal…

I really liked Jolicloud and recommend it to you! If you don't have a invitation to Jolicloud, get one ASAP! Install it to a live USB key so you can test it and see if you like it as much as I do! I think Jolicloud really has something going for it, once it is released in Beta, it will make it even better, because it would have more users to suggest features, and give overall feedback on the OS itself.
