Anderson University recently announced that 76 percent of the faculty and staff have contributed more than $2.4 million in gifts and pledges to the “Dreams. Discovery. Direction.” campaign. The public phase of the campaign for Anderson University was officially launched on October 5, 2006 and is the largest fundraising effort in the history of the institution. To date, more than $82.3 million has been raised toward the $110 million goal.

“Nothing is more inspiring than to see this kind of giving that expresses so much about those who are at work on the campus every day and who share a vision for our future,” said Dr. James L. Edwards, president of Anderson University. “Theirs is one of the very best of the many stories we have to tell in this transforming effort. We are so grateful to our faculty and staff for their outstanding response to the campaign.”

“It is so wonderful that such a substantial percentage of our dedicated faculty and staff have provided financial support for our campaign at such a significant level,” said Bob Coffman, vice-president for Advancement at Anderson University. “The level of participation on-campus is truly remarkable within higher education circles. This kind of commitment is viewed as a very positive factor by other potential donors from outside the campus community as they consider their own gifts.”

“In addition to the outstanding contributions our faculty and staff make daily in support of the mission of AU, the high percentage of individuals willing to participate in the on-campus portion of the campaign is truly an example of going the extra mile,” said Janet Brewer, director of Nicholson Library at Anderson University and co-chair of the On-Campus Campaign Initiative.

The campaign will raise support for endowment and scholarships; facilities and equipment; academic and student programs; and operational needs. Major components of the campaign include $51 million for capital projects, $34 million for endowment and $25 for operational support. At the time of launch, the university announced that more than $61 million had been received in gifts and commitments. The last major campaign effort for Anderson University, with a goal of $75 million, ended in 1999 and raised $83.7 million.

Gospel music legends Bill and Gloria Gaither serve as co-chairs of the National Campaign Advisory Commission. Co-chairing the National Campaign Cabinet are Tom L. Ward, chairman of the Board of Directors and chief executive officer of SandRidge Energy, Inc.; and James B. Winner, president of Winner Advisors.

Kathleen Dugan, Assistant Professor of Art and Design, is hosting a “Facing Autism Symposium” at the Indianapolis Art Center, April 26 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The symposium is provided as a free service to the community, generously supported by Dugan, The Indianapolis Art Center and the Autism society of Indiana.

“When my twins were diagnosed with autism in 2000, at age 3, there was very little information available,” said Dugan. “I was fortunate to meet some very knowledgeable people through an autism support group. With one in every 126 children being diagnosed in the state of Indiana, the need for support is growing.”

The symposium offers three sessions designed for parents and family of children diagnosed with Autism and Aspergers, educators and therapists. Cathy Pratt from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism will host “Teaching Alternative Behaviors” at 9 a.m. “Neurobiology and Pharmacological treatment of Autism” will be hosted by Dr. David Posey from the Riley Autism Clinic at 10 a.m. Susan Pieples from the Autism Society of Indiana will speak on “Parenting outside the box - possibilities for our children’s futures” at 11 a.m. After lunch there will be a panel featuring parents of Autistic spectrum children, ranging in age from preschool to adult.

“I conceived of this symposium in conjunction with my art exhibit at the Indianapolis Art Center as a means of offering support, information, and awareness about autism. I was awarded the Lilly Scholars Grant through Anderson University to make this exhibit and symposium a reality,” said Dugan.

“It is important for people to understand that this disorder doesn’t go away; there is no cure. These children are going to grow up to become adults. If we provide intervention early on, we can assist these children to become functioning members of society.”

The event is free and open to the public. Box lunches will be provided to all participants free of charge. For more information contact Kathleen Dugan.

The event was attended by Betty Martin Church, granddaughter of hall’s namesake, Earl Martin; Joy Loyd, former resident and Martin’s niece; former Resident Directors Melissa Sprock, Erin Davis and Pam and Don Taylor; current RD Abby Long; and other current and former residents.

Memories were relived through a slide show, photo-collages, and a video created by resident Lauren Householder. Several former residents shared favorite memories and stories from their days living in Martin Hall. All testified to the longevity of the relationships built there.

Loyd told of her adventures in Martin, folding her roommate up in a couch, sleeping atop Warner Auditorium and making a midnight run to the Truck Stop. She paid tribute to Earl Martin who founded the hall and served as the dean of the School of Theology, commenting on how many lives he had touched through his service at Anderson College.

Pam Taylor served as RD with her husband Don from 1972 to 1976. Pam recounted stories of spontaneous Bible studies, taking care of girls who got sick in the middle of the night and the bonds of friendship and sisterhood which developed through the sharing of hard times. Don reminisced about the pranks that residents pulled on him during their time in Martin.

Junior Brooke Hynds was a resident in Martin her freshman year and an RA her sophomore year. Hynds shared the story of the bond she developed with three girls on her hall freshman year whom she still lives with. She said that her RA staff bonded early in the year, and those relationships are still strong today.

Martin Hall will be renovated in the summer of 2008. Renovations include opening up the lobby, installing new furniture and flooring, adding several rooms, upgrading the bathrooms and installing a new air conditioning and heating system.

The celebration attested to the endurance of the friendships, memories and stories that have been created over the past 50 years in Martin Hall.

AU announced the addition of several new majors with the release of the 2008-2010 Academic Catalog, including the addition of a Global Business major, an Entrepreneurship major and a Youth Ministry major. Other changes include the restructuring of the Department of Communication Arts and the option for dual licensing through the English as a New Language (ENL) program.

Students in the Falls School of Business will have a new choice in major beginning in the fall of 2008. The Falls School of Business will be offering a Global Business major beginning with the next catalog year. The 65-credit hour major also requires students to enroll in at least six hours of international experience to be approved by the dean and take additional hours of a foreign language.

“Anderson University, by tradition, is internationally focused,” said Terry Truitt, dean of the Falls School of Business. “Strong programs like Tri-S, our foreign language department, and AU-East Africa show the University’s broad reach… The global mindset isn’t something new; we are just building on our strengths.”

The Department of Communication Arts has undergone extensive restructuring in this new catalog. Communication Arts majors now have the option to specialize in Audio/Video/Cinema Production, Broadcast Journalism, Journalism and Public Relations. The department also offers a major in Theatre Arts. The department also offers opportunities for practical experiences seldom seen at the undergraduate level.

Donald Boggs, chair of the Department of Communication Arts, said, “Communication media have changed dramatically since our Mass Communication major was created in 1977 and we have restructured the department and the major to reflect the changes. The Internet and other factors have brought a ‘convergence’ of media and specialized media. Meeting the needs of niche audiences will represent the future of communication.”

Through the Federal National Professional Development grant, the ENL program is now able to provide students with an ENL license, training educators to assist English language learners in the classroom.

The ENL program helps educators serve the needs of English language learners, gain cross-cultural understanding and experience hybrid classes with face-to-face and online work. Ryan Weiss, Assistant to the Director said, “New teachers often face a challenge in teaching LEP students. We give teachers the tools and instruments to overcome these obstacles.”

Other events scheduled on Anderson University’s May 10 commencement day include the Falls School of Business hooding ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in Byrum Hall for candidates of both Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration degrees. In addition, the hooding ceremony for the School of Education will also be conducted at 12 noon on May 10 (as well as the certification ceremony for the Teach in Indiana Program–TIP) in Schield dining room of the Olt Student Center.

In addition, a special pinning ceremony for the Anderson University School of Nursing will be conducted on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. in Byrum Hall.

James T. Morris serves as Special Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and President for Pacers Sports and Entertainment. Before joining the Pacers, Morris spent five years as the Executive Director for the United Nations World Food Programme. As head of WFP, Morris oversaw the world’s largest food aid organization, with more than 12,000 staff members, 90 percent of whom work in the developing world.

In July 2002, Morris was appointed UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Needs in Southern Africa, a region which continues to be gripped by a major food emergency. In 2003, he successfully guided the World Food Programme in carrying out the largest humanitarian operation in history, feeding 27 million Iraqis.

After serving six years in city government in Indianapolis, Ind., Morris moved to the Lilly Endowment, Inc. in 1973. He served as president for six years until 1989. Morris then became chairman and chief executive officer of IWC Resources Corporation and Indianapolis Water Company.

While serving in these leadership roles and on several corporate boards, Morris has carved time out of this already busy schedule for volunteer activities. He was affiliated with the United States Olympic Committee as treasurer and as chairman of the audit and ethics committee, was a member of the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross, and was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University. He has contributed time and guidance to many civic and community organizations.

Phyllis R. Naylor, author of the 1992 Newbery Medal winner Shiloh, was born in Anderson, Ind. She wrote her first book in kindergarten and sold her first story at age 16 for $4.67. Before she started writing full-time in 1960, Naylor worked as a teacher and editor. Since she sold her first children’s book in 1965, she has written 136 books for children and adults.

Shiloh is the story of an 11-year-old Marty Preston who chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia. Marty is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty’s efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers.

Kimberly Majeski grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from college with a degree in Political Science. After serving on the staff of a United States Congressman and two state representatives including the Speaker of the House and the Majority Floor Leader, Majeski received a call from God to preach.

Acclaimed author Elizabeth Royte will speak at chapel sponsored by the Peace and Conflict Transformation (PACT) Program on April 17 in Reardon Auditorium. Immediately after chapel, she will host a book signing for her book, Garbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash, in the bookstore. A lunchtime question-and-answer conversation will be held in the Kane Dining Room from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.

Royte looks at recycling, E-waste and the zero waste movement from all sides, and discusses the practical ways in which we can achieve positive change by limiting our waste footprints.

In Garbage Land, Royte leads readers on the wild adventure that begins once our trash hits the bottom of the can. Royte takes readers on a bizarre cultural tour through slime, stench, and heat—in other words, through the back end of our ever-more supersized lifestyles. By showing what really happens to the things people have “disposed of”, Royte reminds readers that decisions about consumption and waste have a very real impact—and that unless we undertake radical change, garbage will always be with us, in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we consume.

Elizabeth Royte has written for The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, National Geographic, The New York Times Book Review, the New Yorker, Outside, Smithsonian, and other national magazines. Her work is included in The Best American Science Writing 2004 (Ecco/HarperCollins), the environmental omnibus Naked(FourWallsEightWindows), and Outside Magazine’s Why Moths Hate Thomas Edison (W.W. Norton & Company). A former Alicia Patterson Foundation fellow, Royte is the author of The Tapir’s Morning Bath: Solving the Mysteries of the Tropical Rain Forest, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year for 2001.

The PACT Program was established in 1997 through the vision of Maurice and Dondeena Caldwell. The program seeks to encourage the inclusion of the concerns of peace and conflict transformation into the existing curriculum and campus life. The program also offers a Peace and Conflict Transformation minor.

Gospel music legend Sandi Patty and special guest Patrick Henry Hughes, recently featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” will perform with other artists during “Sandi and Friends: A Benefit Celebrating Character” on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in Reardon Auditorium. Also featured during the concert will be renowned Christian recording artist Nicole C. Mullen and popular speaker/author Patsy Clairmont. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Center for Character Development at Anderson University.

Recently featured on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” Patrick Henry Hughes was born without eyes and without the ability to fully straighten his arms and legs, making him unable to walk. Additionally, two steel rods were surgically attached to Patrick’s spine to correct scoliosis. Despite these circumstances, Patrick has overcome these physical issues to excel as a musician and student. He started playing the piano at the age of only nine months, and also plays the trumpet and sings. He has been featured on ESPN, ABC-TV, Oprah, CBS-TV, The Ellen Show, FOX-TV, CSTV, People Magazine, and Sports Illustrated. Patrick has made appearances across the country and has performed in South America and Europe.

Honored with 39 Dove Awards, five Grammy Awards, three Platinum and five Gold recordings, Sandi Patty is the most-awarded female vocalist in contemporary Christian music history. She has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “A Capitol Fourth with the National Symphony,” and ABC’s 2002 “In Search For America: A July 4th Musical Celebration,” among other programs. In addition, Patty has been a familiar voice in such settings as three United States Presidential Inaugural Gala events, the rededication of the Statue of Liberty and Billy Graham Crusades in the United States and Argentina.

Nicole C. Mullen is an award-winning Christian recording artist, songwriter and choreographer—earning both Grammy and Dove awards. During her career she has worked with Michael W. Smith, Newsboys, Jaci Velasquez and Amy Grant to name a few. She’s collected eight Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, including two Female Vocalist of the Year honors, two Song of Year honors (”On My Knees” and “Redeemer”),” Songwriter of the Year and the 2005 Urban Album of the Year for her previous CD, Everyday People. Beyond her music, she has called attention to atrocities in Ghana, West Africa, and has established the Baby Girls Club, an organization that mentors young women.

Patsy Clairmont has been described as petite, profound, and playful. These words help to describe her size, her message and her humor. Patsy comes from an uncommon background. Her years of suffering as a prisoner in her own home, a victim of agoraphobia, have given her a deep appreciation of God’s healing power. Patsy now travels throughout the U.S. providing humor for the heart and hope for the healing. Currently, she is a speaker with the Women of Faith conferences, speaking to tens of thousands of women each month. In her eleven years with Women of Faith she has reached over 3 million women. She has written many best-selling books cooperatively with the other Women of Faith speakers. The latest is Contagious Joy!

Tickets are $20 for main floor seating and $17 for balcony and group purchases of 10 or more tickets. All proceeds from the evening’s ticket sales will provide a way for the Center for Character Development at Anderson University to reach children and those who shape their lives in this region of the country.
