The Gold Standard with Brian Baker is a national radio show that can be heard daily, Monday thru Friday, on radio stations across America. Presented by Merit Financial, archived recordings of the show can also be heard via Merit Financial’s pages at YouTube, Facebook and Google Plus. Additionally, the show is available via the “Merit Gold News’ iPhone and Android app.

If you’ve got an Android 4.0 device or ROM and a burning desire to try out the latest Siri clone, you’re in luck: an XDA Developers member got his or her hands on the APK for Samsung’s S-Voice. This combination of Google’s voice recognition engine and heuristic computing got the lion’s share of the attention for the new version of TouchWiz, which debuted with the Galaxy S III earlier this month.

You’ll need an Ice Cream Sandwich tablet or smartphone, but thankfully not a Samsung one, to try it out. Our quick experimentation shows that it works well enough. As far as utility goes, it’s about as useful as Siri – which is to say that if you give it just the right command and you’re speaking clearly in a low-volume area, it’ll usually give you a vague version of the answer you’re looking for. Currently it seems very inclined to give you the weather and not much else.

The post says that you’ll need to copy the app into your System/App folder and alter the permissions, but I’ve had success with simply installing the app via the standard non-market way. At present it isn’t much better than using Google’s standard voice recognition with search – those of you who were hoping for a “Siri killer” will be disappointed. Here’s hoping that Samsung can improve it before the Galaxy S III’s European release in a couple of weeks.

Google’s acquisition of Motorola has seen a long process since it was first announced last August. The purchase has been given green light by the US and Europe, but China was taking its sweet time considering said acquisition. After a long wait, China has decided to approve said acquisition, but with one condition.

China has asked Google to keep Android free to other manufacturers for at least five years. This is to ensure that Google is not trying to monopolize the Android OS by only allowing Motorola to use the software freely.

Google and Motorola have both stated that there will be no major changes after the acquisition. Both companies will continue to run as they have been, and the main reason for this acquisition is Motorola’s large patent portfolio. According to Google, these patents will aid the Search Giant in protecting Android and its manufacturers from the patent wars.

With this victory, Google is now able to finalize the deal and it is expected to be closed next week. Only time will tell what changes we might see, but let’s hope good conclusions come out of this acquisition.

Ever since an insane fire sale chopped the price off of the HP TouchPad down to $ 100, the one and only WebOS tablet has become something of a modder’s dandy. While they’re nearly impossible to find at retail these days, the cheeky salesmen at Woot.com have managed to snag an unknown quantity of the upgraded 32GB version, and they’re selling them off for $ 194.99 each (plus $ 5 shipping). They’re bound to go quickly, and Woot only sells an item for one day in any case, so hurry if your want one.

Almost immediately after HP announced the fire sale on the formerly $ 500 tablet, work began among Android developers to get a version of Android booting on the TouchPad. Today, in a strange reversal of circumstances, it’s one of the most universally supported “Android” tablets in the world, with dozens of active Android ports including major players like CyanogenMod 9, AOKP and MIUI, all with Ice Cream Sandwich versions running. Best of all, they’re all run off of a custom pre-boot environment that keeps the original WebOS - quite solid, if a little lacking in the apps department – intact.

We’ve got a TouchPad here at Android Community that does commendable duty as a wireless media player, with the help of a TouchStone charger and an AOKP port.
