InsideRIA Podcast - Protagnoize.com with ASP.Net and YUI

This InsideRIA podcast is a behind the scenes look at Protagonize, a newly launched choose your own adventure and colobarative writing community site. Nick Bouton the creator joins me to talk about his experiences.

We discuss how Nick developed the site and designed. Some of the points we cover include judicious use of Ajax,

Nick's a "devigner", not only built the site but he also designed it. The site has an Ajax front end with .Net on the serverside. He's using .Net 2.0 with the Yahoo User Interface Library. He might look at switching to .Net 3.5 when the MVC framework comes out, but he's in no rush.

Nick chose to use YUI for couple different reasons: familiarity from a past project, lots of docs and examples ,Yahoo listens to the community, and finally releases are frequent enough (quarterly) to feel confident in it. YUI is not as integrated as Ajax for ASP.Net but that's not a big deal and has certain advantages.

Nick ikes the YUI Javascript compressor. And uses is for his development.

The YUI rich text editor is buggy and bloated so he uses TinyMCE. Telerik has a nice commercial one but that wasn't in Nick's hobby budget:)

YUI license is BSD licensed and very open. The JS file size for Scrutinize is about 150-200k compressed, but ~500kb un compressed. Nick suggests using on demand loading to improve performance.

Nick also uses YSlow and has implemented most of the YSlow suggestions, but some aren't practical for small sites and start ups. Nick also discusess the sprite technique for images and optimizations. Use GZip! Nick also suggess loading your scripts last where possible.

Nick has design and art school background too, so uses some simple rules to make sure his sites look good. Even though it takes longer it's worth it!

We wrap up with a little chat about building traffic and community for your new site. Nick's even experimented with Facebook social ads and the conversion rates were really high, good to know.

In this podcast I chat with Mike Potter from the Flex marketing about marketing your Flex application, what's new in Flex 3 as well as open source as relates to the Flex world.

<big>Marketing your Flex Application</big>

1. <a href="http://flex.org/showcase">Flex Showcase</a>

Is a gallery of Flex apps on Flex, org.
Scrutinizer AIR App: Podcast

I
know we promised podcasting from day one, but it always takes a little
more than expected to get a new project going. Here we are though. I
caught up with Andy Edmonds recently to talk about Scrutinizer
which is an AIR app that simulates a users vision or attention while
their view a web page. We cover a wide range of topics in the podcast
including how vision works, eye tracking equipment, how AIR was used
for Scrutinizer and even touched on origins of usability and eye gaze
simulation. Andy's a cognitive psychologist and has done huge amounts
of research in web usability, I always enjoy chatting with and learning
from him.

Download the podcast MP3 here. I posted the transcript over on my blog and I'll get a feed set up for all our podcasts here for next one.

A bit more about Scrutinizer...What is it?

"The Scrutinizer is a web browser, based upon the Adobe AIR
toolkit and the WebKit browser, that offers a simulation of the human
visual system. Specifically, it illustrates the distinction between
foveal and peripheral vision in visual acuity and color perception.
Using this simulation, you can get a better idea of how users interact
with your site design. It's also a great tool for observing users
interacting with your pages. By slowing them down, the Scrutinizer
makes it easier for you to figure out what information the user is
consuming and what actions they are considering."

How it works?

The Scrutinizer browser applies a visual filter to where the mouse is
located, simulating foveal vision centered around the mouse. For parts
of the screen far away from the mouse, the display deteriorates into
lower resolution, both in detail and color. You can use the browser to
get a better understanding of the low level mechanics of how users
interact with your site design. Attempting to accomplish a key task on
your site using the Scrutinizer can be very enlightening. Watching a
user unfamiliar with your site attempt a key task with the Scrutinizer
is even better at revealing how your site design affects the way the
user extracts meaning from your presentation.

Have a great weekend!

A bit more about Scrutinizer...What is it? &quot; The Scrutinizer is a web browser, based upon the Adobe AIR toolkit and the WebKit browser, that offers a simulation of the human visual system. Specifically, it illustrates the distinction between foveal and peripheral vision in visual acuity and color perception. Using this simulation, you can get a better idea of how users interact with your site design. It's also a great tool for observing users interacting with your pages. By slowing them down, the Scrutinizer makes it easier for you to figure out what information the user is consuming and what actions they are considering.&quot; How it works? The Scrutinizer browser applies a visual filter to where the mouse is located, simulating foveal vision centered around the mouse. For parts of the screen far away from the mouse, the display deteriorates into lower resolution, both in detail and color. You can use the browser to get a better understanding of the low level mechanics of how users interact with your site design. Attempting to accomplish a key task on your site using the Scrutinizer can be very enlightening. Watching a user unfamiliar with your site attempt a key task with the Scrutinizer is even better at revealing how your site design affects the way the user extracts meaning from your presentation.
