Gymnastics is such an incredible sport to photograph. The combination of strength, flexibility, movement, and confidence creates so many opportunities for unique images. From powerful posing to the little details that show just how much work goes into the sport. These gymnastics pictures celebrate who these girls are right now and everything they’ve worked for. And, of course, having two sisters together made the session even more fun.

We created individual portraits that gave each girl her own moment, along with images of them together that captured the connection they share both as sisters and athletes. That’s one of my favorite things about youth sports portraits. They don’t have to look like the standard photos you get on picture day.

A customized sports photography session

These sessions give us the freedom to create something more personal—using creative lighting, dramatic portraits, movement, and each athlete’s personality to create images that feel more like sports art.Whether your athlete is involved in gymnastics, baseball, basketball, football, dance, soccer, volleyball, or another sport, stylized sports photos are a way to document this chapter of their life in a completely different way. These girls won’t always be this age, wearing these uniforms, mastering these skills, and spending countless hours at the gym. That’s what makes photographing it now so worthwhile.

This dreamy setting and easygoing personalities really allowed me to do just that. It sounds corny but you really do have to trust the process and let my direction lead you. Also, you must allow yourself to enjoy the shoot and really be yourself. I love capturing sweet connections between family members and those subtle in-between moments.

We achieved our dream like setting by shooting at Shawnee Mission Park. It’s not a secret that this location is one of the best in the city. That is because of all the different areas to utilize without having to drive out into the countryside.

Fall is a great time for photos and you’re never too late, I keep so many spots open just for moments like these. I specialize in capturing moments between siblings, grandparents and kids by drawing out their playful side and allow everyone to be at ease and in the moment. Do you want photos that reflect who your family really is? let’s connect!

Milestone photography

I first met Megan when we photographed her senior portraits. Back then, the excitement was all about graduation, new beginnings, and dreaming about what the future might hold. A few years later, I had the honor of photographing her and Austin’s wedding day, I knew they had a strong future when the cake fell over at their wedding and neither of them let it ruin the day. For a lifelong photographer, witnessing milestones like these is truly special.

Then came newborn photos. I get to document those sweet early days in their home was such a joy for a lifelong photographer invested in family stories.

And now? A family session full of laughter, sweet snuggles and toddler kisses.

As photographers, we often talk about preserving memories. But what we don’t talk about enough is the incredible privilege of being invited back into someone’s life again and again. To witness not just milestones, but the beautiful moments in between. To watch families grow, change, and become who they’re meant to be. These are the true rewards of being a lifelong photographer.

It’s something I never take for granted.

Being trusted to document these chapters is one of the greatest gifts of my career. These photographs become part of a family’s history. They’re the images children will someday look back on, the albums that will be pulled off shelves years from now, and the reminders of just how quickly time moves.

After more than 20 years behind the camera, it’s relationships like these that remind me why I do what I do. It’s never just about taking beautiful photos. It’s about preserving a legacy—one season of life at a time.

To the Melott family, thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your senior photos, your wedding day, your newborn memories, and your family today. Watching your story unfold has been an absolute honor, and I don’t take that privilege lightly.

These are the stories I love telling the most.

Why the best family photos happen when you forget about the camera. The secret behind truly authentic family photography is capturing real moments and emotional connections. Ultimately, capturing those authentic moments is at the heart of the best family images.

One of the questions I hear most often is, “How do you get kids to smile naturally?” Recording genuine smiles really depends on authentic moments being captured in real time.

Instead of expecting everyone to stand perfectly still and smile on command, I create moments that let families simply be together. I encourage kids to run, play, explore, and be their most authentic selves. I’ll give parents and siblings simple prompts that might feel a little silly at first. For example, I might ask them to whisper something funny, race to Mom, squeeze in for a giant family hug, or tell Dad your favorite thing about him. This is what makes family photography feel authentic for everyone involved. In fact, capturing life’s authentic moments lets the true essence of a family shine through.

Almost every time, those little prompts turn into genuine laughter, spontaneous hugs, and the authentic connections that families actually want to remember. In this way, the approach creates truly authentic family photography full of emotion and meaning. As a result, the goal always remains capturing moments that are authentic and honest.

When no one is worried about holding the “perfect” smile, everyone relaxes.

Guards come down, personalities come out, and that’s when the magic happens. Those are the images that tell your family’s story. They show not just what everyone looked like, but what it felt like to be together. This is the point of authentic family photography—capturing real experiences. In short, making authentic moments the focus is how capturing them preserves the love in your family photos.

This session took place at Daniel’s Park in Colorado on a beautiful fall evening. It was one of those locations that truly speaks for itself. The golden grasses, sweeping mountain views, and warm autumn light created the perfect backdrop. We didn’t need anything extra for this Colorado family session. Instead, the focus was always on the authenticity of each captured moment in the family’s story.

When the location and light are working in your favor, it allows me to focus entirely on what matters most: your family. Instead of worrying about distracting backgrounds or searching for flattering light, I can concentrate on capturing the little moments between you. For instance, I notice the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughs you didn’t plan, and the quiet hugs that happen naturally. This attention to detail is essential when I’m capturing authentic moments during your session. It also makes sure every memory feels real.

Choosing the Right photographer…

Choosing the right photographer is about so much more than finding someone with a nice camera. It’s about finding someone who understands light and knows how to choose locations that complement your family. Also, it means hiring a photographer who can create an experience where everyone feels comfortable enough to be themselves. This leads to truly authentic family photography. A photographer dedicated to capturing moments that are authentic is crucial.

Because the most meaningful family photographs aren’t posed. They’re the ones filled with movement, laughter, connection, and love. With authentic photography, families see themselves as they really are—and the process of capturing authentic moments makes all the difference in preserving these memories for a lifetime.

Those are the moments that become your family’s favorite memories long after the session is over. Let’s create something together. Please reach out for info on my Kansas City, Colorado and destination family portrait sessions. KC is my home, but I am constantly traveling back to Colorado for family and work. I would love the opportunity to photograph your family! To sum up, choosing authentic family photography means you’ll remember the real story of your family for years to come. Additionally, when you focus on capturing moments that are truly authentic, the memories become priceless.

One of my favorite parts of being a KC family photographer is getting to witness families exactly as they are in this season of life. The Basom family session was a perfect reminder that the most meaningful family portraits don’t come from perfectly posed moments — they come from simply being together.

This sweet family showed up to their session at one of my favorite spots – Shawnee Mission Park – ready to laugh, play, and fully enjoy the moment with their two adorable girls. Instead of worrying about perfect smiles or posed shots, they leaned into the experience and trusted the process. The result? A gallery full of genuine connection, joyful chaos, and the kind of memories that make documentary-style family photography so special.

With little ones, the best moments almost always happen in between the planned shots. The Basom girls were full of personality — giggles, curiosity, and that contagious energy that only kids have.

Rather than trying to control every movement, we let the girls lead the way. They ran, played, snuggled their parents, and shared those tiny, fleeting expressions that parents know so well. Those are the moments that truly tell a family’s story.

This is exactly why I love documentary-style family photography. It allows families to relax and simply enjoy their time together while I capture the authentic connections unfolding naturally.

Those are the images that parents treasure years from now, because they don’t just show what their family looked like — they show what it felt like.

Why Documentary-Style Family Photography Matters

Families grow and change so quickly. Kids go from tiny giggles to big personalities seemingly overnight. Documentary-style sessions focus on preserving those everyday moments that might otherwise slip by.

The Basom family embraced that philosophy completely. They trusted the process, stayed present with their girls, and allowed their real family dynamic to shine through.

And that’s exactly why their portraits turned out so beautifully — they’re full of life, personality, and genuine love.

Thinking About Booking Your Own KC Family Photography Session?

If you love the idea of family photos that feel natural, relaxed, and truly reflect your family, documentary-style family photography might be the perfect fit.

My goal with every Kansas City family photography session is to create space for real connection so your images feel authentic, joyful, and timeless.

Whether your kids are toddlers full of energy or teenagers who pretend they’re too cool for photos (but secretly love the memories later), these sessions are about capturing your family exactly as you are right now.

Because years from now, the images you’ll cherish most won’t be the perfectly posed ones — they’ll be the ones that remind you of how this season of life really felt.

That’s exactly what we set out to capture during my recent branding session with Herwig Dental — and it was such a fun one.

More Than Headshots

Yes, we captured polished, professional headshots. The kind that feel confident, approachable, and true to each team member.

But we didn’t stop there.

Every employee at Herwig Dental brings something different to the practice — warmth, humor, calm energy, attention to detail. Instead of lining everyone up for the same cookie-cutter photo, we leaned into those differences. We styled and posed each team member in a way that reflected their personality while keeping the overall look cohesive and on-brand.

Because branding photos shouldn’t feel stiff.
They should feel like you.

Showcasing Office Culture

One of my favorite parts of this session was capturing their culture.

Herwig Dental isn’t just a place patients go for cleanings — it’s a team that genuinely enjoys working together. There was laughter between shots, inside jokes, and that natural camaraderie you can’t fake.

We documented:

• Team interactions
• Fun and genuine moments between patients and staff
• Creative holiday and birthday shots for social media use
• The family side of it all, bringing Andrew and Emma’s kids and showcasing their family friendly atmosphere

Those images are powerful because they show future patients exactly what they can expect: professionalism with personality.

Highlighting the Products & Services They Support

Branding photography also means visually reinforcing what a company stands behind.

We photographed:

• Products they support
• Treatment tools
• Detail shots that elevate their marketing materials

These images give them a cohesive visual library to use across their website, social media, email marketing, and print — instead of relying on generic stock images that don’t reflect their actual space or team.

And Yes… We Had So Much Fun

The best branding sessions happen when everyone relaxes.

Music was playing. They hyped each other up. We adjusted details. We laughed. And by the end, the team wasn’t just “done with photos” — they were excited to see their images.

That energy shows in the final gallery.

Because when people feel comfortable, confident, and seen — it translates on camera every single time.

Youth Sports portraits don’t have to look like everyone else’s—and these volleyball sessions are proof of that.

When it comes to youth sports portraits in Kansas City, the standard formula is familiar: flat lighting, stiff poses, and quick clicks designed to check a box. But athletes deserve more than “same old, same old.” They deserve portraits that reflect their intensity, confidence, and love for the game.

That’s where this volleyball series comes in. Surge Volleyball Team in KC asked me to capture individual shots of each girl, individual teams and full team photos, focusing on dynamic youth sports portraits.

A Different Take on KC Sports Portraits

These KC sports portraits were designed to feel bold, cinematic, and powerful. Using dynamic lighting and intentional shadows, each image captures the athlete’s focus and edge—whether they’re mid-serve, locked in, or owning their stance on the court.

The dramatic lighting in these youth sports portraits creates a moody, high-impact atmosphere that feels more like a magazine spread than a traditional youth sports photo. The goal? To make these athletes feel strong, confident, and proud of who they are right now—not just document what uniform they wore this season.

More Than Just Volleyball Photos

While these sessions focus on volleyball, this style works across a wide range of youth sports portraits in Kansas City—from club teams to individual athletes looking for something truly unique. These portraits celebrate personality, grit, and individuality, not just stats and schedules.

If you’re looking for Kansas City sports photos that stand out from the crowd and feel custom-built for your athlete, this approach is for you, especially when capturing youth sports portraits.

Ready to Create Something Different?

If you’re tired of traditional sports portraits and want images that feel bold, modern, and unforgettable, let’s talk. I’m currently booking KC sports portrait sessions for individual athletes and teams who want something beyond the basics.

There’s something about fall family photos at Shawnee Mission Park that just gets it right. The light softens, the air cools, and the colors turn rich and cozy all over the park. It’s one of my favorite spots for family sessions this time of year—and this shoot was the perfect example of why.

This young family showed up exactly as they are: relaxed, playful, and totally in sync with one another. The fall colors wrapped around them in the best way—golden grasses, warm leaves, and just enough color to add depth without stealing the show. Capturing such moments is what makes fall family photos rewarding.

We spent the session walking, laughing, and capturing connections with extended family as well. No stiff posing, no forced smiles—just connections. The park gave us wide open spaces for movement and quiet pockets of light that felt intimate and calm. That combination is what makes Shawnee Mission Park such a fall favorite: it’s versatile, natural, and never feels rushed.

One of my favorite things about fall sessions like this is how timeless they feel. Fall family photos enhance the story instead of distracting from it. Years from now, these images will still feel warm, honest, and full of life—exactly how this season should be remembered.

If you’re dreaming of a fall family session that feels natural, cozy, and true to you, Shawnee Mission Park delivers every time. And when the fall colors match the vibes? That’s when the magic really happens.

Black and white kid portraits are a beautiful way to preserve childhood exactly as it is — honest, expressive, and full of personality. By removing color and distractions, these classic children’s headshots focus on what matters most: your child’s unique expressions, emotions, and spirit.

These sessions are intentionally clean and simple. No props. No busy backgrounds. Just crisp, timeless portraits that highlight who your child is in this moment. The result is artwork that feels modern yet heirloom-worthy — perfect for displaying in your home or passing down through generations.

Why Choose Black and White Children’s Portraits?

Black and white photography has a way of standing the test of time. These portraits don’t follow trends or seasons; they grow more meaningful as the years pass. From subtle smiles to playful confidence, every expression tells a story — making each image as individual as the child in front of the camera.

Parents and grandparents especially love these portraits because they feel personal and lasting. They make thoughtful gifts for holidays, birthdays, and milestones — the kind that don’t get tucked away after the moment passes.

A Meaningful Gift for Grandparents and Family

These portraits often become family favorites: framed in hallways, displayed on shelves, and treasured as true family heirlooms. They freeze a fleeting season of childhood in a way that feels both artistic and deeply personal.

If you’re interested in creating timeless black and white portraits of your own children — or gifting something truly special to grandparents — I’d love to connect and share more details about upcoming sessions – https://andreanigh.com/contact/

Shea has such an easy presence — sweet, genuine, and grounded. She was open to all my direction and allowed me to help her outside her comfort zone! I am always asking my subject to trust me with my silly skipping or unique posing. Shea was game for everything!

I’ve known Shea’s family for years, which made this session so fun. Standing behind the camera, it’s hard not to think about how fast time moves — how the little kids you once photographed are suddenly stepping into their senior year. They are full of plans and possibility. Thank you for trusting me with your photos Shea – I love the mix of images we captured of your sweet demeanor!

If you’re looking for Kansas City senior pictures that feel real and personal, Shea’s session is a beautiful reminder of that the best photos don’t need to be forced, they just need to be honest. Let’s spread some sparkle!
