“Haunting Melissa” On the Rise

After its first two days of release, Haunting Melissa, the new ghost story app with a script by Andrew, is in the top ten of free entertainment app downloads at the Apple iStore, vying with such apps as Netflix and the TV networks. Named best App of the day, and featured by Apple, the first-of-its-kind movie-in-an-app has been featured on ABC, CNN, Fox News and Bloomberg, among other places. The app tells the story of Melissa Strogue a young girl who begins to hear strange voices while recovering from her mother’s descent into madness and death. The app is free to download.

Great Launch for Haunting Melissa

Wow, I couldn’t be happier with the way Neal Edelstein and the Haunting Melissa team introduced this new ghost story — and this new form of entertainment —to the world. Lots of good press about it like here and here, creepy trailers here and here, even an encouraging tweet from Avril Lavigne! The app has been roaring up the various app best seller lists, and people are really getting into it — and no wonder, it’s genuinely cutting edge entertainment technology, the first of its kind, and the first, I suspect, of many more to come.

Plus it’s a good ghost story! (Okay, I wrote it, but still.) Just wait – it’s got lots of surprises and fresh material coming, both in terms of pure story and technological coolness. If you haven’t gotten your free download yet, treat yourself. Don’t forget to use headphones. You get a lot more out of it that way, I think.

The first ever app movie, “Haunting Melissa,” a ghost story with a script by Andrew is now available for download free, exclusively at the app store for iPhone and iPad users. The story, delivered in installments by the app, tells of a young woman in a lonely farmhouse who begins to feel her mother is calling to her from beyond the grave. Andrew’s friend Neal Edelstein produced and directed this unique entertainment experience and co-created the story with Andrew. The 30 second trailer is available here.

“Haunting Melissa” Coming Soon

I’m really excited about this. My buddy Neal Edelstein — now the overlord of his own company Hooked Digital Media — has created this brilliant new app to, in his words, “fill a void in today’s entertainment landscape by creating original filmed stories for viewing directly on mobile and tablet devices.” It’s cutting edge stuff — just the sort of thing I’ve been waiting for — and I’m really thrilled that his first film, the ghost story Haunting Melissa, has a teleplay by yours truly. I also co-created the story along with Neal.

I’ve had to keep my mouth shut about this for a long time — and even now I’m not allowed to say much about it — but I’ll say more as we reach the release date. Meanwhile, you can pick up a little more information on some these horror movie sites, like Shock Till You Drop and JoBlo.

Producer Neal Edelstein announced the formation of his new company Hooked Digital Media this week, saying the firm would be dedicated to delivering “quality film-making for tablet and mobile devices through app technology that reinvents distribution.” The first-ever such film will be the ghost story Haunting Melissa, to be released later this spring. Haunting Melissa features a story co-written by Andrew and Neal, and a teleplay by Andrew.

Me on Mamet – Again.

I’ve written about the playwright and screenwriter David Mamet a number of times now, first in the Los Angeles Times, then in the Wall Street Journal. I don’t intend to make a career of it, but I do have one more piece about him on the Front Page website – a study of how the New York Times has launched a vendetta against him since he declared himself a conservative. Here’s a taste:

The New York Times is very good at what it does — which nowadays involves a lot of lying in service to a leftist agenda. There are the outright lies (such as the paper’s recent distortion of a police bias trial to make the NYPD appear racist), the lies of omission (such as its lack of full reporting on the Obama administration’s fatal acts of malfeasance and dishonesty in, say, the Benghazi and Fast and Furious scandals), and the atmospheric lies (such as its rose-colored reporting on the disastrous economy in bluer-than-blue California). Altogether, these lies combine to make the paper something like the Matrix: a plausible imitation of reality intended to deceive people so that their substance may be milked to feed an overweening state.

As in the 1999 sci-fi film that begat that metaphor, rebellion against the illusion results in swift retribution. And nowhere does the Times rush to punish resistance so quickly as in the arts. Times reviewers consistently give sympathetic treatment to leftist cultural works while attacking those of a conservative bent, often regardless of quality.

Which brings me to David Mamet.

Andrew Has Part in “Hating Breitbart”

“Hating Breitbart,” a documentary on the late media activist, will be released into select theaters and also made available on DVD and video on demand starting May 17th. The film follows Breitbart through a number of his clashes with the mainstream media, repeatedly showing him first vilified, then vindicated. Andrew (Klavan) appears, offering commentary on Breitbart’s place in media history. The doc was produced by Maura Flynn and Evan Coyne Maloney and features original music by Chris Loesch.
