I recently need to add a product attribute to an existing configurable product in Magento. The product allowed for the 'size' attribute to be selected, but I needed to add 'color'. I couldn't find a way in the Magento Admin and tried a couple different imports, but ended up changing this directly in the database.

To do this, go to the table 'catalog_product_super_attribute'. You'll need to insert the new option for the configurable product here. You can find the product_id in the admin (in the ID column - not the SKU column). You can also find the attribute_id in the admin by going to Catalog -> Attribute -> Manage Attributes. Then select the attribute you'd like to add. You'll see the attribute ID at the end of the URL (e.g. example.com/admin/catalog_product_attribute/edit/attribute_id/12).

Insert a new product_super_attribute_id with the attribute_id and the product_id. Then just check it in your admin to confirm. Make sure to make backups first.

Google Shopping = Next Google Wave?

Watch out, Amazon, there's a new kid on the retail block and it comes with a familiar name tied to it: Google is said to be discussing a new service with various retailers that would offer web shoppers super speedy delivery.

Sounds like another good concept, but not something that's going to catch on. People don't even use Google Checkout much compared to Amazon or PayPal. Will they now change their shopping habits to pay and buy through Google?

Sterling "wanted tenants that fit his image," according to testimony Davenport gave in a discrimination lawsuit brought against Sterling in 2003 by 19 tenants and the nonprofit Housing Rights Center. (That case ended in a confidential settlement in 2005; attorneys for the Center declined to comment for this story. In a separate suit, also concluded in 2005, Davenport claimed Sterling sexually harassed her, and lost. She declined comment. The Magazine has obtained depositions in both cases.) Cultivating his image, Davenport said, meant no blacks, no Mexican-Americans, no children (whom Sterling called "brats") and no government-housing-subsidy recipients as tenants. So according to the testimony of tenants, Sterling employees made life difficult for residents in some of his new buildings. They refused rent checks, then accused renters of nonpayment. They refused to do repairs for black tenants and harassed them with surprise inspections, threatening residents with eviction for alleged violations of building rules.

New Moment Comi 192 Skis

Just got my Moment Comi 192 skis today. They are huge and and I can't wait to use them. Thanks to ALPENTOLIC from the Teton Gravity Forums for hooking me up with a great price on these pow skis. Definitely in good shape and by far the biggest skis I've owned. Rockered in the front. Can't wait for some powder. Here's a few photos.

Another Tahoe weather site: Powdiction

I just found Powdiction yesterday. Really like the name. It's a weather site focused on Tahoe and the Western Sierra. I've been reading The Weather Geek for quite a while and will have to add this my list of Tahoe weather sites. It's always fun to read more about the big storms when they're coming in. Got any other suggestions?

Edit: I can't seem to add Powdiction to my RSS Reader unfortunately. Let me know if you find a way.

How to allow links in product reviews in Magento

By default, Magento strips away HTML tags from product reviews. This can be helpful if you want to prevent links, bold text, and other HTML tags from appearing. For example, a customer might write this review:

I loved this sweater. Here's a photo and some othe details I wrote on my own blog.

By default, it would show up exactly like that on your product review section of the product page. If instead you'd like to allow the HTML tag, you just need to change one line of code. Go to /app/design/frontend/default/YOUR-THEME/template/review/product/view/list_tab.phtml (or list.phtml depending on your product page design). Look for this line:

<p><?php echo nl2br($this->htmlEscape($_review->getDetail())) ?> <?php echo $this->__('(Posted on %s)', $this->formatDate($_review->getCreatedAt()), 'long') ?></p>

and change it to

<p><?php echo nl2br($_review->getDetail())) ?> <?php echo $this->__('(Posted on %s)', $this->formatDate($_review->getCreatedAt()), 'long') ?></p>

Make sure to backup your original file and it's always best to test this before putting onto a live site. After this change is made, the abover review would look like this:

New Interactive Search at Beacon Real Estate Nantucket

Beacon Real Estate released a new feature yesterday that provides an interactive search of Nantucket real estate. It allows you to draw a circle or square around any area of Nantucket. The search then gives you the results for the active listings in the highlighted area only. The results are shown along the right hand side. The results can be further refined by setting the minimum and maximum price, number of bedrooms, and other search criteria. It's definitely worth checking out. Two ways to schedule emails in Gmail

I often schedule emails to be sent in the future. It may be because I'm writing it late at night and don't need it to send until the morning, or it could be an email that I want to resend to myself at a later, more convenient time.

LetterMeLater

I've been using LetterMeLater since late 2008 to schedule emails to send later. Their service allows you to send emails to "me@lettermelater.com" from any of your registered email addresses. Just specify the recipient and time to send and LetterMeLater will take care of the rest. This allows you to write your email now and send it later. When you work odd, long hours, it's sometimes nice to have it send first thing in the morning rather than the actual time of composition.

This can also be used to resend emails to yourself at a better time. I haven't used LetterMeLater like this recently, but found it useful at one time. Reading an email that you would rather deal with later? Just schedule it to send back to yourself at a more convenient time.

Although I almostly use gMail or Google Apps email, LetterMeLater can be used from any email program and doesn't require anything to be installed.

Boomerang

I've been a little slow to discover Boomerang since I already had a solution that worked. However, I installed this today and found some definite benefits.

Boomerang is an extension that can be installed in Firefox or Chrome. This works only with gMail and Google Apps email. It's very easy to schedule an email for later. After composing an email, just click on the new 'send later' button next to the standard 'send' button. You can select a delay or a specific time to send the email.

Additionaly, Boomerang gives a cleaner way to clean your inbox and set reminders for emails you'd rather deal with later. With the email open, just set a time when you want to be reminded.

There is also a feature that allows you to be reminded if you don't hear back from your recipient or to just remind you to follow up again. I typically use Remember The Milk for this, but might try this out.

Also, PPC campaigns still show data for keywords from logged-in users, which means only organic privacy is protected (Dear Google, WTF?). Only possible explanation that I can think of is that Google wants to protect the data of how they personalize the search results, meaning PPC ads are not personalized while organic results are.

It seems that this is almost required, since PPC campaigns are built on bidding on keywords. Without keyword data, I don't see how a campaign manager can accurately look at any of the data and justify the money spent. It seems hiding that info and making the ads more personalized would benefit Google greatly though.

I'll be reading more on this subject, but would love to hear others' thoughts.
