It is part of why I like the service so much because my PC homepage and my mobile homepage had all the great content and gadgets on it. BUT as of Jan 16, 2009 Google has killed the optimized version. They choose to instead give the same treatment to iPhone users as regular mobile users. I am not sure if they thought no one would notice but it's big news apparently.

Just to give you an idea of how badly their regular mobile version is I will quote Google themselves from Jan 2008.

"The standard mobile version of iGoogle available at http://google.com/m is much more limited: it only displays feeds and a very small number of gadgets, you need to manually add items to your page and you can't change the number of items displayed from a feed. Another limitation is that it only works in the US."
Source: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/01/igoogle-for-iphone.html

You can see all the people complaining here. It's interesting because the live streaming version via Kyte looked great and there were many people watching as it was going live. Now when you go to re-play them the quality is pretty poor. I'm not sure if it's a setting somewhere or what is the matter but as you can see two posts below the quality is all jittery and lagged.

I thought that Kyte would be a good choice after reading this article linked to from techmeme but afterwords I regret using Kyte and would have preferred trying something else instead. July 11th should bring some interesting solutions for iPhone users such as Qik. I will give this a try next for my next conference.

noreply@blogger.com (Andrew E.R. Where are you skype?

I saw this interesting post on slashdot.org (slashdot beat techmeme on this article) mentioning a new application for the iPhone called iCall. This is the type of app I would expect would be Skype's first priority for July 11th yet I haven't heard anything from them on this. I know they are working on something because my conversations with many Skype employees seem to indicate this. In theory you'd expect eBay would demo this type of app at the Apple WWDC instead of an eBay shopping app as it seems more applicable in my opinion. I can see it being valuable to buy from eBay while on the go if the experience is all there. We'll have to wait and see on July 11th.

iCall VoIP on the Apple iPhone from Arlo & Andy on Vimeo.

noreply@blogger.com (Andrew E.R. Joost now has a ton of interesting competitors and one of them is Hulu. I really think the idea of full length TV and movie episodes is a great idea and the in show advertising is not annoying if you're used to watching TV in general. I also think the ability to embed a full length movie into your blog is amazing.

noreply@blogger.com (Andrew E.R. This is the first time that Microsoft's game unit has posted a profit.

As the CTO of Terapeak.com & DataUnison.com, I have access to eBay's worldwide sales which lets us look into interesting sales trends online. When we look at eBay's data starting Jan 2006 to the end of Dec 2007, we see that approximately 318,951 units of Microsoft's xBox 360 have been purchased on eBay of which 185,680 were new and 133,271 were used. 76% of consoles purchased were by males compared to 24% by females. The largest age group to purchase the xBox 360 would be 18-25 year olds followed by 36-50 year olds.

If we look at Halo 3 sales on eBay, we are far behind relative sales of the console. Halo 3 sales on eBay are approximately 14,824 units. This represents 0.18% of all Halo 3 games sold worldwide vs. 1.8% of xBox 360 consoles world wide. I would wager that as time progresses and player detachment to Halo 3 grows, we'll see sales increase online and on eBay specifically.

xBox 360 Console Units Sold in the USA:

noreply@blogger.com (Andrew E.R. It should be a great meeting of the minds and learning experience. I look forward to hearing many of the great speakers. We did some work & had a few dinners with Tim O'Reilly a few years ago and he really buys into our business model and the fact that Terapeak is here to help online merchants succeed with eBay's great set of real-time on demand data. Thank you for the invitation Tim!

noreply@blogger.com (Andrew E.R. It's a free research tool that lets eBay sellers build better titles by selecting more profitable keywords. You can use it free at data.terapeak.com/titlebuilder/.

The widget allows you to set both a Terapeak affiliate ID and an eBay affiliate PID! Not only will affiliates get revenue from promoting Terapeak but also for the traffic they send to eBay. This is a win win scenario for any affiliate. Below is an example of the widget in action. This weekly column for AuctionBytes, aptly named "Data Bytes," aims to accomplish this goal and more. We look forward to covering a wide variety of topics. Please send your questions, feedback or article suggestions to databytes@auctionbytes.com. This week we'll explore what eBay sellers are selling internationally, and to whom they are selling. Data is based on an analysis of eBay sales during a 1-week period in February 2007.

In the U.S., more than 88 percent of eBay sales are shipped within the country. That means only about 12 percent of eBay.com sales are to buyers outside of the country. Who are these international buyers? The most popular buyer location is Canada, which accounts for a little over four percent of sales. Next in line are the U.K., Australia, France and Germany.

What are they buying? Mostly easily shippable goods. The most popular categories on eBay.com for international sales are CDs, Records, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-Ray, Video Games, Wristwatches, Women's Shoes and Non-Fiction Books.

Canadian eBay sellers are much more likely to ship internationally. Nearly half of all Canadian eBay sales are sold to buyers in the U.S., while only about 43 percent are sold on their home turf. Canada follows the pattern of the U.S. with next greatest sales volume to the U.K., Australia, France and Germany. Most popular categories for international sales - similar to those in the U.S. - include DVD, HD DVD and Blu-Ray, Video Games, CDs, Other MP3 Players and Records.

While it seems that Americans can't get enough online shopping, Canadians look to be following closely behind. U.S. and international sellers might do well to make sure Canada is checked on their "will ship to" lists.

In the U.K., we see most eBay sales shipping domestically - a little over 85 percent. The most popular international buyer location is (surprise, surprise) the U.S., with more than five percent of eBay.co.uk sales. The second most popular destination is Ireland, followed by France, Australia, Canada and Germany. What is Ireland buying from the U.K.? Men's clothing. Other popular categories for international sales from the U.K. are MP3 Players, Mobile Phones, Wristwatches and Baby Clothing.

In Germany, more than 92 percent of eBay sales are to other Germans. The most popular buyer destination outside of Germany is Austria, followed by France, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. What are all these people buying from Germany? The most popular category for international sales is Military Photos, Letters and Postcards, 1918-1945. After that comes MP3 Players, Notebook Computers, Out-of-Print Magic Trading Cards and Art Photography 1940 – 1970,…quite the interesting mix of products!

Country

Domestic Sales

Int'l Sales

Largest trading partner

US

88

12

Canada (4%)

Canada

43

57

US (49%)

UK

85

15

US (5%)

Germany

92

8

Austria – (2.5%)

Stay tuned for more insights next week.
