Android ROM and rooting dictionary for beginners

Diving into the world of rooting and modding your Android phone or tablet can feel like an overwhelming endeavor. Open a forum thread with some instructions and you’ll find yourself staring at all sorts of strange words and confusing combinations of letters. ROMs, Kernels, Nandroids, TAR images…what does it all mean?! We’re here to help! Below you’ll find the newb’s dictionary to the strange language of modding/hacking. This is not intended to be a technical definition of each concept, but an easy to understand explanation for the average Joe

Disclaimer: We chose NOT to put this “dictionary” in alphabetical order because we believe it follows a logical order from basic to more advanced hacking knowledge that will be easier for the complete beginner to follow and understand

Root - Acquiring ”root” is the process of gaining total control over your device. When you purchase your device, there are certain files and systems that you cannot access because they are blocked by the manufacturer. By aquiring root you gain access to these files, allowing you to modify, replace and even delete them. This allows you to take total control over how the software of your device looks and works

Bootloader - Before you can root your device, you must unlock your bootloader. The bootloader is a line of code that is executed even before your Android operating system boots up. The bootloader’s code is specific for each make and model of the many Android devices. Bootloaders come “locked” because the device manufacturer doesn’t want you tinkering with the software that they worked so hard to optimize for that particular piece of hardware. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to tinker with the phone’s firmware, or even replace it with a custom firmware (aka: ROM). It is important to note that unlocking your bootloader will erase all data stored on your phone, essentially putting it back to a “factory reset” state, so you’ll want to save any pictures, music, or any other important files that are on your device

Recovery - Once your bootloader is unlocked and you have rooted your device, you will need a custom recovery. A recovery is a piece of software that is called up separate from the actual Android operating system. Its purpose is to make changes to the Android OS at a core level, such as delete user data, apply updates and more. The stock recovery is limited in function, so if you are planning on modifying/hacking/rooting your phone, you will need to install a “Custom Recovery” such asClockwork Mod Recovery. A custom recovery will allow you to make backups, restore them, wipe partitions, install custom software and more

Backup / Nandroid - Once your custom recovery is installed, you will want to make a backup (also known as a Nandroid). A Nandroid is simply a complete and total backup of your phone. It will store all of your data, apps, settings, SMS messages, and more, basically allowing you to restore your phone to the exact state that it was in when you made the backup

Wipe - Now that your backup is made, you don’t have to be afraid of making changes to your phone or losing data, since you can always restore it (just be sure to not delete the backup!). Now you can “wipe” your phone without worry. Wiping is deleting all the user data from your phone, essentially reseting it to its factory state. You can also wipe (ie: delete) other partitions of your phone like the cache partition. It is always recommended to wipe your phone before installing a custom ROM (we’ll get to that in a second). You can wipe your phone via the custom recovery you installed

Flashing - Flashing is the process of installing some sort of software or code via your custom recovery

Flashable ZIP - A flashable ZIP is the actual file that you install or “flash” via the custom recovery to make changes to your phone’s software. It is a normal zip file that contains the lines of code to modify your software. These Flashable ZIPs can be used to flash a ROM, Kernel, Radio, mod, and more, which we will define below

ROM - A ROM is the main firmware or operating system that your phone runs. Just like Windows 7 runs on your PC, or Mac OSX runs on your Macbook, a ROM is the main software you interact with to use your phone. It includes all the system apps (messaging, email, phone), the launcher, the notification bar…everything really. Google’s Nexus line runs a “stock” Android ROM (meaning it’s unmodified) while manufacturers make significant changes to the look and feel of their ROMS before they ship them with your phone (for example: note the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S III’s software and the software on LG’s Nexus 4) . Code-savvy developers have taken the manufacturers’ code and created their own “Custom ROMs”. These ROMs can dramitically enhance the look and feel of your phone, and often add tons of useful features. Two very popular custom ROMs areCyanogenMod and MIUI. A ROM is made for a specific model phone and comes in a Flashable ZIP file that is installed (“flashed”) via your custom recovery

Kernel - Unlike a ROM the Kernel does not alter the look and feel of your phone, but is a “deeper” line of code that rests beneath the surface, so to speak. It tells the software how to interact with the hardware. A custom kernel is a kernel that developers have added code to, in order to create all sorts of new options and abilities. They might add code to make the phone’s processor run at a higher speed, or make the battery draw less power when the phone is in “idle” mode. Kernels are like the soul of the software. They can be flashed in the custom recovery and the files are usually called Tar Images or Zimages

Radio / Basebands / Modems - The radio / baseband / modem is a firmware that allows your phone to connect to the wireless network. This firmware controls basic low-level functions of your phone like cell-network connectivity, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Oftentimes an updated radio / modem will help with signal strength issues, battery drain and more. The radio / modem firmware is specific to each device and carrier and is flashed via custom recovery

Mod - A “mod” is simply a modification made to the phone’s software. This can include adding functionality or changing the visual layout of your phone, like moving the location of the clock to the center of the notification bar, or inverting the colors in the SMS app. Mods are usually Flashable Zip files that are flashed in the custom recovery

Brick – A brick is when your phone won’t recover from a bad rooting/flashing process. Your device becomes unresponsive and unable to be restored…essentially making it a “brick” or a very expensive paperweight. Bricking your phone usually happens when you do not follow instructions carefully or if a device does not allow for root. Bricking your phone is a real possibility and risk in rooting and modding your phone, but it is very rare to occur, and most unlikely to occur if you simply follow the instructions

Superuser (SU) – If you follow the instructions and root correctly, you will become a Superuser (SU), which means you become a complete and total admin of your device, allowing for most, if not all root permissions to be accessible

Kang - A Kang is a ROM or mod that uses a significant portion of code created by another developer

Overclock / Underclock - This means that you have installed a custom Kernel that has allowed you to speed up or slow down your phone’s processor speed. Most phones are clocked at a certain processor speed (ie: 2.4 MHz), but if you overclock it, you are allowing your process to push the limits by working at a higher speed. Overclocking will make your phone perform faster, but often comes at the expense of battery life. Underclocking does the exact opposite of overclocking. It makes your processor perform at a lower speed, slowing down perceived performance, but helps increase battery life

Under Volt (UV) - Undervolting is a feature that is enabled in certain custom kernels. Undervolting lowers the amount of power your processor needs to perform at its normal level which, in theory, saves you battery life. The feature is known to cause issues in many phones

APK - An APK is the file name for an Android application that can be installed on your phone. All apps downloaded from the Google Play store come as APK files. APKs can also be “sideloaded” by downloading them from outside of the Google Play store and placing on the phones internal or external memory. To install a sideloaded APK you need to enable that option in settings, then find the APK file on your phone and tap it to begin the installation process

Odex / DeOdex - DeOdexing APKs is a way that developers optimize APKs (apps) to be compatible with different themes that themers have created. Please see this very good explanation on Odex / DeOdex that we wrote about previously

Android SDK - Android SDK is a software development kit written by Google that enables developers to create applications for the Android platform. The Android SDK includes sample projects with source code, development tools, an emulator, and required libraries to build Android applications. In many cases, if you want to hack your phone, you will need to have the Android SDK installed on your computer

ADB - ADB stands for Advance Debug Bridge which is a tool that comes in the Android SDK. ADB lets you modify your device (or device’s software) via a PC command line. ADB is mainly for developers to create and test their apps, but it can also be used by curious hackers (like you!) to access your phone from your computer and run some commands via your computer’s command prompt

Q: Why do apps restart again

For those generals looking for a more rapid MP campaign game, Caesar in Gaul

opposing 48 factions, co-op or competitive 2-player campaigns are tighter

more focussed, and less time-consuming than a full Campaign

:New mid-game challenge mechanics

For those players making it through to the mid-game, there will be new

challenges to face as a more suitable replacement for the Civil Wars of ROME

II. As a Gallic tribe, you ll feel the mailed fist of Rome respond with heavy

intervention forces, and as Rome, you ll see the Gallic tribes rebelling and

forming alliances against you

Caesar in Gaul adds the Battle of Alesia as a playable historical battle

Alesia marked the turning point of Caesar s Gallic War, and resulted in the

capture of Vercingetorix, who was later taken to Rome and executed at Caesar's

Set from Caesar's perspective, Alesia tasks the player with maintaining the

siege of Vercingetorix's Gallic stronghold. The battle begins with the Roman

forces deployed within their own investment fortifications outside the hill-fort

led by generals Lotarios & Leonnorios. As Celts deep within Hellenic territory

and factions hostile towards them, the Galatians offer interesting and

challenging new gameplay

كيف تزيد الذاكرة الداخلية لهاتفك الذكي لتصل إلى 1 غيغابايت او أكثر؟

*ملاحظة: انقل ملفاتك الهامة من بطاقة الذاكرة قبل تطبيق هذا الدرس فقد تحذف وتستطيع ارجاعها مرة أخرى بعد اﻻنتهاء.

هذا الدرس تم تطبيقه على هاتف Samsung Duos y GT-S6102 ويصلح للتطبيق على جميع الهواتف الذكية وأجهزة التابلت العاملة بنظام تشغيل أندرويد إﻻ أنني لم أجرب ذلك ولكن تستطيع تجربة ذلك (على مسؤوليتك الخاصة).

في البداية يجب عليك تثبيت ملف Skin1980-GT-S5360+CWM.zip وذلك من خلال الرابط التالي:

بعد التثبيت قم بنقله إلى هاتفك الذكي باستخدام وصلة USB أو البلوتوث أو بازالة بطاقة الذاكرة ووضعها في جهاز الكمبيوتر أو بأي طريقة اخرى تجدها مناسبة (ملاحظة هامة: ﻻ تضع الملف في مجلدات داخل بطاقة الذاكرة اجعله في الصفحة الرئيسية لبطاقة الذاكرة وليس في مجلدات فرعية)

ثم ثبت برنامج Link2sd على ذاكرة الهاتف وليس على الذاكرة الخارجية من متجر Google Play:

بعد ذلك قم باطفاء الموبايل واضغط على 3 أزرار بنفس الوقت مع الضغط المستمر وهي (زر اﻻطفاء وزر الرئيسية وزر التحكم بالصوت) واستمر بالضغط حتى تظهر لك شاشة شبيهة بشاشة الدوس (السوداء) في الويندوز ستجد قائمة تستطيع التنقل فيها باستخدام زر التحكم بالصوت حيث زيادة الصوت تجعلك تنتقل إلى أعلى وتقليل الصوت تجعلك تنتقل إلى أسفل.

من القائمة قم باختيار اﻷمر apply update from sd card وذلك باستخدام زر الهوم (الرئيسية) في هاتفك الذكي

ثم اختر Skin1980-GT-S5360+CWM.zip

ثم اختر advanced ثم Partition SD Card

ستظهر لديك شاشة لتختار مساحة الذاكرة الداخلية الجديدة التي ترغب فيها والخيارات هي 128، 256، 512، 1024، 2048، 3072، 4096

تستطيع اختيار ما تشاء ولكن ننصح وبهدف الحفاظ على استقرار الهاتف الذكي ولكي ﻻ تواجه أية مشاكل ننصح باختيار 1024 أي 1 غيغابايت، طبعا يجب ان تكون الذاكرة الخارجية لديك ﻻ تقل عن 2 غيغابايت.

بعد اختيار المساحة الجديدة ستظهر لك خيارات ﻻختيار مساحة السواب اختر 0M

اﻻن سوف يقوم هاتفك الذكي باقتطاع 1 غيغابايت من الذاكرة الخارجية ﻻستخدامها في الذاكرة الداخلية للهاتف وما عليك اﻻ اﻻنتظار حتى يقوم باﻻنتهاء من عملية التقسيم

بعد اﻻنتهاء ستظهر لك قائمة اختر منها reboot recovery ثم reboot system now

وسيتم اعادة تشغيل الهاتف انتظر حتى يتم اﻻنتهاء من تثبيت بطاقة الذاكرة واعدادها ثم افتح متجر غوغل بلاي وقم بتثبيت البرامج التالية على هاتفك الذكي وذلك على ذاكرة الهاتف وليس على الذاكرة الخارجية وهي:

وقم بتحميل ملف update.zip من خلال الرابط التالي:

ثم انقله إلى البطاقة الخارجية للجهاز وأطفئ الموبايل مرة أخرى وأعد الكرة بالضغط على اﻷزرار الثلاثة سابقة الذكر بنفس الوقت حتى تظهر شاشة اﻷوامر واختر من القائمة apply update from sdcard ثم update.zip وبعد اﻻنتهاء من التحديث اختر reboot system now ليتم اعادة تشغيل الموبايل.

بعد اعادة التشغيل وتثبيت ذاكرة البطاقة واعدادها ادخل إلى برنامج link2sd واضغط على زر الخيارات من هاتفك الذكي واختر recreate mount script أو "إعادة انشاء السكريبتات" ثم اختر القسم "ext3" وسوف تلاحظ أنه تم الربط بين برامج link2sd وsupersu وsuperuser وota root keeper وأنه أصبح لديك صلاحيات الرووت.

بعد ذلك ستظهر لديك جميع البرامج المثبتة على جهاز تستطيع الدخول على أي منها والضغط على "النقل إلى بطاقة SD" أو "move to sd" وفي حال لم ينتقل البرنامج إلى البطاقة قم بالضغط على "انشاء رابط" أو "create link" وسوف يقوم نقل مكتبات البرنامج وملفاتك إلى بطاقة الذاكرة وسيظهر لك عبارة "مربوط إلى بطاقة الذاكرة"

تجدر اﻻشارة إلى انك تستطيع ازالة اي برنامج موجود على الموبايل حتى التي كان يستحيل حذفها في السابق ولكن حذار ان تحذف تطبيقات هامة وضرورية لعمل الموبايل مما يؤدي إلى تعطله، وذلك بالدخول إلى البرنامج المراد حذفه باستخدام برنامج link2sd وذلك بالضغط على اجراءات ثم حذف.

أوضحت مجلة "أندرويد فيلت" الألمانية أنه لا داع للقلق، إذا نسى المستخدم كلمة المرور الخاصة بقفل الشاشة في هاتفه الذكي المزود بنظام تشغيل جوجل أندرويد. وطالما أن المستخدم قام بتسجيل الدخول إلى حساب البريد الإلكتروني Gmail على الهاتف الذكي؛ فيمكنه إعادة تعيين كلمة المرور لقفل الشاشة عن بُعد عن طريق متصفح الإنترنت بأي حاسوب.
وللقيام بذلك يتعين على المستخدم القيام بتسجيل الدخول في وظيفة مدير أجهزة أندرويد "Android Device Manager" عبر موقع www.google.com/android/devicemanager، حيث يظهر مربع أبيض جهة اليسار يشتمل على جميع الأجهزة المزودة بنظام غوغل أندرويد، والتي ترتبط بالحساب المعني.
وبعد ذلك يقوم المستخدم باختيار الهاتف الذكي الذي نسى كلمة المرور الخاصة به، ثم يقوم بالنقر على "القفل"، عندئذ تنفتح نافذة يمكنه خلالها إدخال كلمة مرور جديدة. ولدواعي الأمان ينصح خبراء المجلة الألمانية بضرورة تغيير كلمة المرور التي تم إدخالها بواسطة المتصفح مرة أخرى على الهاتف الذكي مباشرة.

اليوم في هذه المقالة سوف نناقش اضافة مثيرة ( الدردشة الحية ) بواسطة chatroll.

مع مساعدة من هذه الأضافة يمكن لزوارالمدونة الخاصه بك الدردشة مع بعضهم البعض من خلال مربع الدردشة الحية. ومن المفيد جدا في خلق مناقشات صغيرة بين الزوار.

ولإضافة هذة الإداة لن تستغرق منك غير بضع دقائق

الجزء 1 : الحصول الدردشة الحية

الخطوة 1: افتح Chatroll الموقع و انقر على زر التسجيل .

الخطوة 2 : في الشاشة التالية إنشاء حساب جديد أو تسجيل الدخول باستخدام حساب الفيسبوك الخاص بك. في حالتي أنا استخدم طريقة الفيسبوك تسجيل الدخول.

الخطوة 3 : بمجرد تسجيل في حساب الخاص بك، ثم انقر على Create a new live event option .

الخطوة 4 : الصفحة التالية سوف تكون صفحة إعدادات صندوق الدردشة الخاص بك. أدخل اسم القطعة الخاصة بك و انقر فوقContinue option.

الخطوة 5 : الشاشه التاليه حول نوع المدونة الخاصة بك سوف نوقم بإختيار نوع المدونة اذا كانت بولجر او ورد بريس .

خطوة 6 : سوف تحصل علي كود لل دردشة الخاصة بك. ننسخ هذا الرمز و انقر فوق Continue option .

خطوة 7 : الآن انقر على Go to Settings Now option.

خطوة 8 : الآن سوف تظهر الصفحة النهائيه التي تحتوي على الإعدادات الخاصة بك

بعد الإنتهاء قم بحفظ الإعدادات .

جزء 2 : إضافة إلدردشة الي مدونتك

الخطوة 1 : تسجيل الدخول إلى لوحة التحكم الخاصة بك .

الخطوة 2 : حدد الخيار تخطيط و انقر على إضافة خيار الأداة .

الخطوة 3 : تحديد HTML / جافا سكريبت.

الخطوة 4 : في القطعة HTML / جافا سكريبت لصق الكود الذي حصلنا عليه .

الخطوة 5 : حفظ الإضافة و اسمتمع بها .

Samsung Galaxy S5: A Gadget Worth Waiting For

Summarized below are the latest rumors and news making the rounds on the web which make the device desirable

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is currently the hottest selling phone from the house of Samsung, but the smartphone will descend from the pedestal in the near future as the Korean company gears up to launch the advanced and more innovative Samsung Galaxy S5. There has not been any official word about the specifications and features of the phone yet, but the rumors coming from reliable sources and websites cannot be ignored altogether

Buyers may not have to wait long

Buyers who are looking forward to upgrading their phone to the Galaxy S5 will probably have to wait for three or four months, which is not a long time compared to the launch date of the iPhone 6 or Nexus 6

It is believed that the electronic giant will launch the Galaxy S5 within the first three months of 2014. These release date speculations have come from multiple sources, which strengthen the expectations of the release date for the upcoming gadget from Samsung

Metal Galaxy S5 possible

Samsung is expected to swerve from its trend of using s polycarbonate casing for its phones. The Galaxy S5 is supposed to be all metal, and according to the Korean news site ET news, magnesium and aluminum are possible materials

A report from EMSOdm.com also mentioned that the Galaxy S5 would have a metal casing. Reportedly, Samsung has made a payment to Catcher, which develops cases for the HTC One, the iPad and the MacBook Air. Back in September, Catcher was in the news along with Samsung; however, the cases for the device might not arrive until the second half of 2014

There are some interesting anecdotes suggesting that the new metallic phone from Samsung could be the Galaxy F, which may be unveiled a few months before the S5. Some reports suggest that the Galaxy F may be a step ahead of the Galaxy S5 in technology, with a flexible screen similar to that of the Galaxy Round. Another model, perhaps the Galaxy S5, would keep the standard Super AMOLED screen and plastic body shell.

A report states that the Galaxy S5 may come with a flexible screen and may sport a leather polycarbonate casing like the Note 3. Also, there are chances that carbon fiber could also be used in the upcoming S5. According to a report from Android Beat, Samsung has entered into an agreement with Samsung Petrochemical and SGL Group, which is one of the largest producers of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a very light and strong material which would be perfect for the Galaxy S5

Galaxy S5 may challenge iPhone with a 64-bit processor

Official news came from Samsung’s mobile head, J.K. Shin, when the executive said that the next smartphone would have a 64-bit processor. Samsung would take the bull by horns and make all possible efforts to outperform the iPhone 5S, which ensures that it would enhance its processor capacity by integrating a 64-bit chip into the Galaxy S5

A Korean website, Digital Daily, revealed that Samsung may deploy a Exynos 6 processor, a new 14nm chip with 64-bit support and ARM’s cortex A53/A57 Big.Littleocta-core configuration. These probable features ensure that Samsung would come aggressively upon other rivals through its Galaxy S5. It is expected that the Galaxy S5 would have at least 3GB of RAM, though the company is already producing 4GB LPDDR3 mobile DRAM.

There is also a host of other apparent features that the Galaxy S5 is supposed to integrate

An eye scanning security feature has supposedly become the latest passion of Samsung, and the company is expected to use it in the Galaxy S5 to get an edge over the biometric security of the iPhone 5S, which has a fingerprint sensor. The security feature is a highly anticipated one, though no reliable source has yet confirmed the news

GalaxyClub.nl unearthed a patent filed by Samsung which stated that the company will update its ChatON messaging service to integrate multi-person conference calls. According to the patent, through the integration of the software, both front and rear cameras along with multiple streams visible along the bottom of the screen, can be used for conferencing. The system is similar to Google’s conference call system available through Hangouts, which can run ten different feeds at the same time. The software might be integrated within the ChatON or with a new TouchWiz feature

Smartphones are getting smarter by the day. A look into the Sony Xperia Z substantiates the fact as the phone is dust and waterproof. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S4 Active, which is a water-resistant model of its flagship. However, according to ET News, the Galaxy S5 will be a step ahead and will use waterproof and dust-proof technology. If industry onlookers are to be believed, then the Galaxy S5 would meet the standards of the S4 Active.

Some early reports stated that the Galaxy S5 would have a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, but lately reports have surfaced revealing altogether different camera specs. According to ET News, the company would use a 16-megapixel sensor that would be able to capture better images in low light. Samsung would manufacture these sensors itself, and they could feature Samsung’s own ISOCELL technology, which reportedly enhances light, thereby regulating the absorption of electrons that, in turn, gives high color fidelity, even in a darker environment

According to a recent report, Samsung has failed to get a smooth supply of the components, which in turn has become the hurdle in integrating optical image stabilization. The components are not available for the slimmer devices. Optical image stabilization was thought to have been dropped from the Galaxy Note 3 due to a shortage of the modules

Better software, a differentiating factor

Rumors are ripe that Samsung would launch two different versions of the Samsung Galaxy S5. One will run on Android, and the other would sport Samsung’s own Tizen operating system. However, there are slim chances of the company bringing two versions of the mobile device. Also, looking at the massive popularity of Android, Tizen does not look very competitive. The Korean company may launch the Tizen version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 in some markets.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is also expected to have better software support, as the difference among hardware is negligible in smartphones today. The new updates would be faster for the Galaxy S5 compared to other Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) devices as the company has been following the trend of bringing the new updates in its latest flagships first
