CyanogenMod 10 Announced

CyanogenMod Team announces the CyanogenMod 10 based on Android Jelly Bean!

The CyanogenMod team announced that the next version of its popular Android ROM, will be based on the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will be named as CyanogenMod 10.

On the official Google+ page one ca read:

Essentially, if your device met our criteria for CM9 (512mb RAM, etc) and is already supported, then you should be in line for CM10. There may be some added headaches around hwcomposer, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get source.

About the current work, they say that:

Our goal is to release a stable CM 9.0.0 (and any needed .1’s). After that, we will work on CM7 and CM10 only. As stated above, CM9 devices are highly likely to get CM10, so maintaining a separate class of devices for CM9 only is inefficient.

As usual, it was not given any date for the launch of CyanogenMod 10.

Although that the source code of Android 4.1 is not yet available, it will be only a matter of time until the CM10 version comes out.

Pre-Steps

Put the su zip on the sdcard for later.

In terminal, cd to the directory you have your sdk in. Then cd into platform-tools.
Type adb push path-to-zip/JB-SuperSU.zip /sdcard

Unlocking Your Nexus 7

To unlock the device

cd to platform-tools
Reboot to the bootloader - adb reboot bootloader
Unlock your device* - fastboot oem unlock

*You will have to accept and erase all the user data on the tablet.
*You must run this as sudo in Linux

Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery

(You're still inside the bootloader)

Flash CWM - fastboot flash recovery path-to-img/CWM-grouper-recovery.img
Make CWM Permanent -

Boot into recovery
Go to Mounts and Storage
Mount /System
Type in Terminal mv recovery-from-boot.p recovery-from-boot.bak

If your having trouble gaining shell, try "adb kill-server" then "abd start-server". This should hopefully fix it.

Flash Su

Go back by pressing power button
Install the zip in the sdcard

Samsung Galaxy S III on Fire!

"So I driving along today with my Galaxy S3 in my car mount when suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone." is the testimony of an Irish user.

dillo2k10 is the nickname of the Galaxy S3 owner who posted his story in the boards.ie forum.

"The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car."

On Samsung Electronics Official Global blog post one can read:

"There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung GALAXY SIII that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question. Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation. We are committed to providing our customers with the safest products possible and are looking at this seriously"

According to his last update, on 22-06-2012, Samsung already contacted him to retrieve the damaged device.

Samsung Galaxy S3 - Benchmarks

How fast is the new Galaxy S III?

Browser & CPU Performance: Very Good

As always, we start with our Javascript performance tests that measure a combination of the hardware's performance in addition to the software on the device itself. Sunspider performance is extremely good:

While we thought we hit a performance wall around 1800ms, the One X from HTC, the Lava XOLO and now the Samsung Galaxy S III have reset the barrier for us. In this case the performance boost is likely more due to software than hardware, but the combination of the two results in performance that's better than almost anything we've seen thus far. The obvious exception being Intel's Medfield in the X900.

BrowserMark is another solid js benchmark, but here we're really able to see just how much tuning Samsung has done in its browser:

The Galaxy S III is significantly faster than anything else we've ever tested thus far. The browsing experience in general is very good on the SGS3, and the advantage here likely has more to do with Samsung's browser code and the fact that it's running Android 4.0.4 rather than any inherent SoC advantage. We know how 1.4GHz Cortex A9s should perform, and this is clearly much better than that.

Once again we turn to Qualcomm's Vellamo to get an idea for browser and UI scrolling performance:

Although (understandably) not as quick as the Snapdragon S4 based One X, the SGS3 does extremely well here - likely due in no small part to whatever browser optimizations ship in Samsung's 4.0.4 build. As Brian put it when he first got time with the device: it's butter.

GPU Performance: Insanely Fast

While we don't know the clocks of the Mali-400/MP4 GPU in the SGS3, it's obviously significantly quicker than its predecessor. Similar to what we saw when the Galaxy S II launched, Samsung once again takes the crown for fastest smartphone GPU in our performance tests.

The onscreen GLBenchmark Egypt and Pro results are understandably v-sync limited, but if you look at how much headroom is available thanks to the faster GPU it's clear that the Galaxy S III should be able to handle newer, more complex games, better than its predecessor.

What's particularly insane is that Samsung is able to deliver better performance than the iPhone 4S, the previous king-of-the-GPU-hill in these tests.

The performance advantage isn't anywhere near as staggering if we look as BaseMark ES 2.0, however as we've mentioned before this benchmark is definitely showing its age at this point. Despite the aggressive tuning Qualcomm has done for these benchmarks, Samsung is actually able to remain competitive and even pull out a slight win in the Taiji test. Both benchmarks are v-sync limited on the fastest platforms however.

Final Words

Our first interactions with Samsung's Exynos 4 Quad are promising, but there's still much more to understand. Samsung clearly used 32nm as a means to higher GPU clock speeds, which in turn gives us much better GPU performance. The big unknown, as always, is power consumption. Based on what we've seen thus far from Samsung's 32nm LP process in Apple's iPad 2,4 (review forthcoming), Exynos 4 Quad should be a pretty good step forward in the power department as well.

As soon as we can get our hands on final hardware you can expect a full review of the Galaxy S III, including power and battery life analysis.

Initial reactions to the Galaxy S III announcement seemed almost disappointing, however stay tuned for our hands on impressions of the device as well as even more depth/detail on the hardware platform - you may be surprised.

Google Drive Blocked in China

The recently launched Google Drive was blocked by Chinese authorities.

The Chinese government decided to block Google Drive, preventing the people to have access to another storage service based on "cloud."

Wangpan is the only storage service that can be used by the Chinese, a service that allows storage of 25 GB of data.

We had talked about Google's new recently released service here, but Google Drive is causing distrust to its users!

More than the service itself, people are talking about the Google Drive's terms of service!

So, Your files are really yours?
The short answer to the question is: you to still own your own files, but your are giving to Google the license to do ‘what they want’ with your uploaded content.

The long answer can be found at Google Terms of Service page:

“Your Content in our Services: When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide licence to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes that we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.

Google Drive cloud storage has been launched, offering users 5GB of free space.

The Google Drive appears as an improvement of the existing Google Docs.

As expected, this service will offer awesome search capabilities, including support for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) documents and image recognition.

It will support about 30 different file types, like Photoshop and Illustrator.

This service is present in PCs, Macs and Android plataforms, and will be released the iOS application in the coming weeks.

Android 5.0 - Jelly Bean soon?

According to Digtimes, Google is about to launch Android 5.0! This information was disclosed by Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

Since Microsoft will launch Windows 8 in the third quarter of 2012, Google decided to anticipate the launch of the new operating system Jelly Bean for the second quarter.

There are also some rumors that indicate that Android 5.0 will be optimized for tablets (and also a few new additions to smartphones) and that Google will provide a native dual-boot to operating systems, allowing users to choose between two OS, like Windows 8 and Android 5.0.

Google is trying to convince the companies to adopt this functionality and install Android 5.0 and Windows 8 in the same tablets.

With this strategy, Google hopes to get back into the netbooks and notebooks market.

It is also known that there is some fear by the manufacturers in adopting Android 5.0, all because of poor performance and problems present in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Undelete for Android is a small application that allows you to recover files on devices withroot privileges. Despite being a beta, it functions quite well.

Nowadays, smartphones can store a lot of information about our personal lives, professional, etc., but what can we do when we accidentally lose that information?

There are many applications aimed at maintaining and performing backups, but very few areaimed at recovering lost data.

Undelete for Android, is an application for rooted smartphone that allows you to recover any type of deleted file from your SD card or internal storage.

Welcome to the open beta of our newest root application - Undelete for Android, an application for root users that allows you to recover any type of deleted file from your SD card or internal storage. This is the first application of its kind on Android.

WARNING: DATA RECOVERY IS NOT GUARANTEED, welcome to reality. If it doesn't recover or see your files from two years ago, please don't complain.

Will the next Amazon's Smartphone run Android OS?

Amazon may be preparing to launch a smartphone with Android OS.

Warranty is given by Chang and Kevin Mark Mahaney of Citigroup.

Amazon has just released the Amazon Kindle Fire, his second tablet, and the first with Android OS.

Previously, Amazon launched the Amazon Kindle in 2007, with Linux 2.6.26, and now appears to be prepared to launch a smartphone with Android OS.

Mark Mahaney and Kevin Chang, analysts at Citigroup, said that Amazon may release a smartphone running Android OS at Christmas 2012.

Gingerbread overtakes Froyo

Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread has, finally, overtaken Android 2.2 Froyo and now it is the most used version of the operating system.

Almost a year since its launch, Gingerbread is now the version of Android that most users are on.

According to the last numbers, the editions from 2.3 to 2.3.7, have 44.4 per cent of Android devices, up from 38.7% a month earlier, against the 40.7 per cent of Froyo, that dropped from 45.3%.

This values came from Android Developers portal regularly updated by Google.

Hi everyone!
Many people have complained that after installing the IRIS app, at the time of running this application they get the error saying "No Speech Input".
