no memory. no space for your apps

Its half the phone the LG Optimus is at twice the price. I like the feel of it but the hard-coded htc sense apps use up all of the available internal storage leaving almost nothing for your apps. My first htc, bought for my sons birthday, very disappointed in htc, can't believe they sell this junk.

My honest review of the Thunderbolt - a week later

If you're looking for an honest review of the Thunderbolt (mind you, I've only had it a little less than 2 weeks at this point), please read on.

First, a little background: I've been a Verizon customer for years. I previously had an LG Env2 for 3 years before buying the Thunderbolt. Like a lot of you, I'm sure, I waited and waited and skipped over several releases of the iPhone (on AT&T), desperately hoping for something equal or better on Verizon. For better or worse, I stood my ground and kept on waiting for something on Verizon. I was eligible for an upgrade about this time last year, but I never pulled the trigger on it for one reason or another. I guess I just never found a phone that really made me want to spend the extra money for the data plan (although the Droid Incredible came close). As soon as I heard that the LTE phones would start to roll out in early 2011, I knew I was waiting until that point to use my upgrade.

That brings us to the present. Dismayed a little by the continuous delays that plagued the release of the Thunderbolt, I waited patiently until the weekend following the release. I told myself I was going to wait a little longer to see if there were any major problems. I was a bit nervous on this purchase, just based on the rumors I'd been hearing about (and reading about) that delayed the Thunderbolt's release. In the end, though, I decided I just couldn't wait any longer and I made the purchase. My $50 upgrade credit (incidentally, the last time I'll be able to use one of those on Verizon, since they're doing away with the program) brought the price of the phone from $250 down to $200. Initial set-up at the Verizon store was minimal and I was out the door fairly quickly.

A few caveats here, before I dive into the guts of the review:

1) I live on the East Coast, in Arlington, VA. I frequently travel up/down the I-95 corridor to NJ/NYC/CT/etc, where Verizon's 4G LTE signal is very strong.

2) Even though this is my first Android phone, I'm quite familiar with the operating system (OS) since my fiancee has one (Droid Incredible) and my father has one (Droid X). I've spent extensive time with both of those phones, so I have a pretty good reference point.

So, the first thing everyone wants to know is, of course, about 4G. (This is certainly the start of the "Pros" category, by the way.) As I mentioned above, I spend most of my time on the East Coast in the mid-Atlantic region. I've found the 4G signal to be excellent so far. During a recent trip from Philly down to Arlington, VA, I had 4G signal a good majority of the time. There were definitely spots in Northern Maryland and Delaware that didn't have 4G, but once I hit the outskirts of Baltimore, I had 4G signal pretty much the rest of the way south to Washington, DC. Keep in mind, too, that the 4G LTE network (on this phone, anyway) is for DATA only. It won't be until later this year or next year that Verizon starts to release phones that actually make phone calls over the 4G network.

The 4G LTE network that Verizon has up and running is BLAZING fast. I can't possibly overstate that in any way, shape, or form. I have a Comcast cable modem at home that provides Wifi to my apartment. The 4G speeds that I'm getting with LTE right now are FASTER than my home network. And not even really that close, to be honest. Verizon's 4G network is considerably faster than the Comcast cable modem. How much faster you ask? Take these numbers for instance (generated using the SpeedTest.net app from the Android app store):

On my home Wifi: 2941 kbps DOWNLOAD, 1390 kbps UPLOAD

On Verizon's LTE network: 5102 kbps DOWNLOAD, 21214 kbps UPLOAD

In case your math is a little rusty, download speeds are almost twice as fast on the LTE network. Upload speeds are 15+ times faster! That's compared to a CABLE MODEM! That's insanely fast, folks!!! The big question, of course, is will those speeds continue to hold up as more folks jump on the LTE network? I can't answer that question since I'm not a Verizon engineer. I certainly hope so, that's for sure. Verizon's network is their reputation, so I'm willing to bet that the speeds hold up fairly well. And let's face it -- even if there is a *slight* downgrade in speed once more folks are on, it's still insanely fast for a cell phone.

To go along with the network speeds, lets discuss the Mobile Hotspot on the phone. You can connect up to 5 devices to the hotspot. My understanding is that the mobile hotspot option is free on this phone through mid-May (roughly, don't quote me on this). I tested it out this weekend, and it performed flawlessly using my MacBook. Speeds were, again, outstanding. I didn't run any numbers, but just browsing the Internet seemed considerably faster when connected to my phone (vs. the Cable Modem Wifi). Definitely an awesome feature to be able to turn the phone into a mobile 4G LTE hotspot. Am I going to use that feature after May when I have to pay extra? I'm not sure, but it's certainly a great option to have for some folks. I guess the answer will also depend on Verizon's pricing structure, whenever that fully emerges.

The phone itself feels well put together. Make no mistake about it: it's LARGE. But it's not too large. Personally, I think it's the perfect size for cell phone. Screen size is the same as the Droid X at 4.3 inches, although the phone itself is smaller in profile and feels a lot nicer to hold than the Droid X. It's great for any type of video, Google Nav, etc etc. The list goes on, but the screen is big, bright, and beautiful. Is it the latest and greatest screen technology out there? I doubt it, but it certainly looks really good, I can tell you that much.

That about does it for the PROS. Now for the CONS. Some of them are nitpicky, and some are not. Some may be mixed with future updates, and others probably won't.

First thing I noticed when I got the phone home: Verizon loads this thing with bloatware CRAP. I don't know about you, but that really, REALLY annoys me. Not so much that they put it on there, I understand that Verizon probably has marketing agreements with other companies (Blockbuster, for example). I can live with that. That's if they made the apps removable - they are not. And that's what drives me absolutely crazy with this phone. The only program that can be deleted from the device is CityID. The others are baked into the ROM - meaning that even if you go though the procedures to delete them, guess what -- they're still there! They don't go away!! And there's nothing you can do to get rid of them, short of rooting the phone (which I'm not recommending). To name a few: Blockbuster, Bitbop, Amazon Kindle, Lets Golf 2, Peep, Rhapsody, Rock Band, Slacker, VCast Apps, VCast Media, and VZ Navigator. Keep in mind that some of these apps run AUTOMATICALLY in the background (draining battery! which I'll get to in a minute). If you didn't just read that list and say "Are you kidding me?!?!" then you're nuts. I have a demo of Lets Golf 2 on my phone that I CAN'T DELETE because Verizon says so. That is total crap, in my opinion, and a huge downside to this phone. I'm okay with them pre-loading it on their phones - just don't put it in the ROM. I literally hate that Verizon thinks you should have no choice on deleting some apps. Huge minus for this phone.

That leads me nicely into battery life. Believe (most of) what you read. It's more or less a disaster. I'd like to tell you otherwise, believe me! And it's even more annoying when you realize there are Verizon apps running in the background that you can't get rid of (or stop with a Task Killer program -- they pop right back up!). If you run this phone on the 4G LTE network all day long, I'm here to tell you that it's HIGHLY unlikely you're even getting through the day without having to recharge. I found that I average (so far) about 4-6 hours between charges. And that is NOT with heavy use (streaming video, etc.). That's with light-to-moderate use during the day (1 or 2 quick phone calls, checking Gmail and Facebook, etc). If you read the reviews on here (and elsewhere - check on Verizon's own forums), you'll see people complaining of the same thing. I really hope that Verizon will put out a software update to address this issue, as it's most certainly one of the phone's major problems. Having said that, there are ways around the issue. Using different apps from the app store (Phone Info is the one I use), you can force the phone to operate in 3G mode only. That definitely helps batter life tremendously. You can also download/purchase a "task killer" app to close out apps running (draining battery) in the background. That also helps, but the biggest saver of the battery is forcing the phone into 3G only mode. Which, for me, is quite frustrating. Yeah, I'm saving on the battery life, but one of the MAIN REASONS I bought this phone to begin with is to access the 4G network. So it doesn't do me much good to run it in 3G only mode, although I'm forced to do it right now because of the battery life. It's frustrating, to say the least. Is it something Verizon will fix in the near future? Let's hope so. Just be aware of this issue before you buy this phone (many of the rumors surrounding the delayed release of this phone centered on the problems with its battery life).

Phone call quality is mediocre, at best. When I think of a word to describe the call quality, what comes to mind is "meh". That's really all I can say. For a device this technologically superior, it's call quality should be fantastic. It's NOT - it's just OK. Both the Droid Incredible and the Droid X are *FAR* superior than this phone in that regard. Why? I don't really know. If you read up on some of the newest Android phones (the Motorola Atrix on AT&T for example), a lot of them are having problems with call quality. Put the HTC Thunderbolt in that category too. I haven't really had anyone complain, per se, but it's just not that great. People sound very "tinny" on my end. I agree with others: the uppermost volume setting is definitely not loud enough, either. If you're in a really quiet room, it's fine, but good luck being able to hear anyone on a crowded city street. Again, I hope we'll see a fix for this sooner than later through a software update.

The camera on the phone is also just "OK". It's really nothing great. Yeah it's 8 megapixels, and yeah, it takes decent shots for a cell phone, but that's about all. It's been covered in great detail by reviews elsewhere, and I haven't really used it too much yet, so I'm not going into great detail here. I haven't been that impressed by it, at least not yet, but it's not awful either. I haven't used the front camera for any video calls or anything like that yet, so I can't comment on it much. It's 1.3 megapixels, that's about all I know. I'm sure it's also mediocre.

I think that about covers it, at least the main aspects of the phone, anyway. I will edit/update this initial review as I spend more time with the phone. Believe me, I *really* wanted this to be a 5-star phone, but it's honestly not. It's probably more like a 3.5 star phone, but due to the sheer speed of Verizon's LTE network, I'll be generous and give it a half-star bump to 4-stars. If Verizon can figure out the battery life problems and the call quality problems, it's definitely a 4.5 star phone (I'm keeping that other half-star reserved until Verizon decides not to kill the phone with bloatware!).

It's definitely a good (but not great) entrance into the 4G/LTE arena for Verizon. If you're going to buy the phone, temper your expectations a little. That's the best advice I can give. If you can stand to wait a few more months, I'd probably do so to see what's coming from Motorola, Samsung, LG, etc.

I hope this review helped you make a reasonable decision on the phone.

Fast internet browsing, lots of nice features, but still some issues.

My wife and I just bought a couple of these and we have been playing with them and learning their features for the last few days. Overall, we both like the phones a great deal, but there are still some issues.

The good:

1. We both like the touchscreen keyboard features on this phone better than on other smart phones that we have tried. The phone gives you tactile feedback with a subtle vibration whenever you hit a key, and, as you get more used to this feedback it really speeds up your typing. I still find that I need to type in landscape mode, else the keys are too small for my fingers, but it really works pretty well.

(2) Web-browsing is lightning fast and zooming in and out and moving across web pages seems instantaneus. This makes it very easy to read newspapers, etc. For me, this phone is as good as a tablet for reading newspapers.

(3) The camera and the video recordings work pretty well. Due to limitations of the lens, etc., the 8 Megapixel camera is not even close to what you get from even the cheapest of digital cameras, but it is still a big improvement over earlier phones.

Still needs improvement:

(1) My wife and I have so far not been able to exchange multimedia messages using these phones. Messages that have video and/or audio attachments remain undelivered. A verizon tech support person told us that this was due to some temporary bugs in transmitting multimedia attachments with messages from the Thunderbolt and that this was an android issue which should be straightened out very soon (Update: the problem was indeed taken care of soon: it is now fixed and all backlogged multimedia messages were delivered after we rebooted the phones).

(2) Voice dialing is not as efficient as it is on the blackberries. With the Thunderbolt, you can voice dial a contact, but then if there are multiple numbers, you must use the touchscreen to select one of them (unless you are using bluetooth). In contrast, on a blackberry you can voice specify one of several number for a given contact even without a bluetooth.

(3) Battery life seems to be on the short side. I do not believe that you get even two hours of intensive browsing, etc., from the battery.

Update 6/4/2011:

We bought HTC extended life batteries few weeks ago and I now see these a necessity for the Thunderbolt. Even with the extended life battery,we still have to recharge the phone every other day with light use and every day with moderate to heavy use. Also, my wife's phone started using up the battery at an even faster rate, to the point where the original battery would be depleted in two hours with little or no use. We returned that phone under warranty and the replacement phone is doing better.

Another issue is that my phone has frozen up a few times and when this happened I was not able to get the phone to reboot until I actually removed and reinstalled the battery. This seems to happen about every other week. So far it has not been a big problem albeit this it is annoying when this happens.

Update 6/14/2011:

Whatever problem is causing my phone to freeze up started getting progressively worse. These last few days it has happened every day and earlier today it simply refused to come back on when I took the battery out to reboot it. I then took the phone to a verizon service center, where they were eventually able to get it to reboot, but then it had lost all its data including my address files, etc. At that point I was expecting the verizon backup assistant software to reinstall my data, but it failed to do so, so I seem to have lost my directory of contacts (I will check later whether it can be retrieved through other means). Verizon tells me that I will be receiving a replacement phone in overnight mail. I will post another update once I receive that one and have set it up properly.

Update 6/19/2011:

I received a new thunderbolt the very next day as promised and I was able to download all my original information to it. I am not sure exactly what the problems were with the first one, but the new one has been faster from the get go and so far everything has been copacetic.

Coming from an iPhone 4 user on AT&T...

As a previous iPhone 4 user, I would say I was apple brainwashed (or is it "applewashed"?) and thought the iPhone was the only smartphone worth considering. Well, the iPhone truly is a great phone, but a combination of AT&T's miserable service - including 5-10 dropped calls a day on average and terrible reception otherwise - the iPhone was often rendered a $700 smart paperweight unless WiFi was accessible. So why not get an iPhone 4 with Verizon you say? Well, after hearing about Verizon's new LTE network and the new HTC Thunderbolt I decided to take the plunge into Android for a change of pace.

I will not talk much about Android itself, well, because this isn't a review of Android. However, I will say that I really like HTC's Sense overlay and the level of customization that is possible. HTC's platform and the Android GUI's feature set is impressive compared to the iPhone's cut and dry. I love the widgets and having instant access to a bunch of useful information on the home screen.

So about the phone. The phone is substantially bigger if you are used to the iPhone. The size alone might rule this phone out for some people. It works out well for me since I have bigger hands and felt myself squinting at the iPhone screen. Reading and viewing text is made a very pleasurable experience on the Thunderbolt given the screen size. In terms of data speed, the phone is blisteringly fast when on Verizon's 4G. The speed of the GUI is smooth, albeit not as smooth as the iPhone 4. For example, when scrolling amongst apps, it's just not as fluid. It's not a deal breaker by any stretch and perhaps they might tweak this a bit in future OS revisions.

In terms of style, where the iPhone 4 is svelte, the Thunderbolt seems "all business". The case itself is robust and hefty but the material is actually a bit slippery - a good reason to opt for a rubberized cover of some sort. Nonetheless, it does feel good in the hand and quality made. I'd say the touch responsiveness with the capacitive screen is near equal to the iPhone's.

The camera is a downgrade from the iPhone 4 but is still passable. For me this really wasn't a big deal since I have this incredible invention called a digital camera for high quality photos.

The stock battery life is not as good as the iPhone, but it's also not bad at all for average use in my experience. Unless you are simultaneously streaming your HD soap opera over 4G, syncing 30 apps, playing Angry Birds, and listening to music through your bluetooth headphones, you'll probably find that the battery life is satisfactory. That being said, the iPhone 4 vs. HTC TBolt battery comparison is not truly apples to apples one (no pun intended) because the screen is so much larger on the HTC and it's running 4G. But guess what: you can actually replace the battery yourself without sacrificing your phone to Apple, and furthermore, you can replace the battery with an extended one if you need it. What luxury.

So there you have it. Coming from the iPhone 4 I feel like I made a great upgrade, and I am no longer having my blood sucked by AT&T. While both phones are without a doubt superb, my preference is for the HTC. Faster and better things will surely come down the pipe like they always do, but this is a great phone for the here and now.

-UPDATE - APR 28 -

I just wanted to post a quick update on my experience with the Thunderbolt thus far. I still am very pleased with the phone, and I find it cumbersome when I go back to using my girlfriend's Iphone 4. I've grown accustomed to the bigger screen size (which I think it's just about perfect).

It does seem like the phone has some issues switching amongst the 3G/4G radios and I hope HTC will release an update soon. For instance, at times it seems like the handoff isn't smooth and apps like Pandora will skip momentarily. I also find it annoying that certain apps (such as the internet) won't transfer data when on basic 1X service like the iPhone would (albeit super slowly which is expected). Perhaps this is also something that could be addressed.

I would like to make one suggestion and recommend purchasing the aftermarket charger/battery options provided by Seidio if you find yourself draining the battery. They have a nice battery charger that will allow you to charge your spare and your phone at the same time - which is great for those days when you use the phone more and need the extra juice. I don't often need to change the battery during the day but on the weekends it's nice to have the spare.

It keeps getting better and better

I have had my Desire HD for a week now - bought from TKS in Germany (and paid more than it would have been on Amazon). Overall I am very happy with it:

PROS:

- Solid build quality and, unlike most other phones, its not a glossy fingerprint magnet!

- Large and beautiful screen with great color saturation

- Runs fast and is very responsive - I have not encountered any lag

- Wi-Fi Hotspot is easily set up so I can pull e-mail into my iP*d Touch

- Replaceable battery in the event that the battery fails

- Image quality of camera runs circles around *Phone 3GS and is better than IP4

- Sound quality is fabulous for music and great for calls

- USB internet pass-through functionality to save 3G data charges

- Its a small thing but the live wallpapers are beautiful

- Setting up IMAP to pull in Exchange e-mail is easy

- Otterbox makes a very nice case for it

CONS:

- Battery life is only so-so - a day and a half at best

- Poor design for SIM card slot - the SIM causes a (slight) unsightly gap on the bottom cover

- Removing and replacing the battery cover is tricky - mine has a tiny gap after it was replaced

- Limited storage (8-Gb micro-SD) for the price - should have been 16-Gb

- Android market is a mess to say it nicely - limited number of good games

Complaints about the box and size are silly. Why would you buy a large phone then complain about the size? I have a 3GS and iP4 for games - but this phone has completely won me over for daily use. The screen is large enough to comfortably surf the web and handle routine e-mail. It's so good that I can hardly put it down and I can easily overlook the cons!!

a very interesting phone, with regular HTC problems

First of all, this is my 3rd android phone, and my 2nd HTC android phone.

What i like:

==========

-the screen is really crisp

-the touch feel is more responsive than my HTC desire

-screen size is just awesome if you do a lot of reading with your phone "emails, news"

-the phone is surprisingly lighter than it seems, one may think "this must be heavy", well it is not

-the phone is very slim, which gives it with the huge screen size some CLASSY effect

-nice htc widgets available, specially email and news widgets, can't live without these two

-htc new sence feature like locating your phone, locking it .. etc, really nice, but i disabled them thinking this might affect battery life

- rom space is just awesome, no need for app-to-sd to keep all ur market installed appz available.

- better multitouch experience than the former htc desire

what i hate:

==========

- the battery life .. are you kidding me?! 1230mah on such a screen is just too funny for anyone who is heavily using his phone, switching to 2G only network is a must if your daily talk time exceeds 20 minutes to be able to pass the day with one charge.

- mobility, can't fit it into my pocket, used to fit its elder, tinier brother the HTC desire with ease, even with the extended battery

- htc must do something about their package ease of opening

- htc must change the phone access ways, never been so afraid opening a phone before, feels like it is gonna break a plastic pin all way through.

- no space for respectable extended batteries, which is what this phone REALLY needs.

- the LOUD speaker experience in all HTC phones is not the greatest, my wife's XT701 the 1 year old phone is WAY better than this 1 month old telephone

- upto 320 hours standby time on WCDMA and 480 on GSM >> that's just a big fat lie.

- the price kept me from buying it for at least 45 days till it dropped a bit, initial prices here for high end new electronics are crazy

What i wanted:

- better resolution, one of the biggest screens in the market and still using the same resolution as 3.5 and 3.7 inches phones?! i want something to compete with the iphone4 screen creating a new standard of its own.

I have the nexus one.

I bought this for the bigger screen,the 8 mp camera and Gps map availability without internet.What a difference to the nexus.

Its just not only the screen size, but the response to touch is much better as well.

The HTC sense makes a big difference over the stock android that nexus has to offer.Small things like news app,facebook app,email app also make life easier.

Over time I have used the Sony X 10, HTC desire ,iphone. This wins by a big margin.Definitely a buy if you are looking for an unlocked Android smartphone.

Phone is great but NOT unlocked!

I purchased this product about one month ago and bought another for my wife. The phones were delivered on time. The ones I purchased online had no carrier logos but upon arrival I discovered T-mobile branding on them. So I thought 'ok, no problem - it's supposed to be unlocked,' and went ahead and slipped in my sim card. What I did not mention as yet is that I live in Trinidad and Tobago (in the Caribbean) and travel a lot, hence the purchase of an unlocked phone. Upon switching on the phone, I was greeted with a very cool green Android guy. Unfortunately, I could not get past that screen - because lo and behold, the phone was not unlocked (as advertised)!

The only reason I did not automatically return the phones at this point (as advised by the Amazon Rep.) is because it would have been such a hassle to do so. That's only the first part of the problem. I then thought that I could just get the phones unlocked by those smart tech people you see in the malls all over the place... Only to discover that I needed a data plan to even get past the first screen (mind you, this was ALSO NOT advertised). The end result is that I ended paying about $100 each to get the phones unlocked and activated.

I close by saying that the only reason this review did not get only one star is because after the headache I endured to get them unlocked, the phones are actually great phones. My wife loves hers and for someone who is not too interested in gadgets - she is absolutely hooked on hers. My advice is that if you live outside the US, do NOT purchase this phone - it might be okay if you live in the US (but I can't really comment on that).

All that it is

The ChaCha is great... I knew what I wanted and this phone was perfect for me.. the QWERTY keyboard is nice big and spacy... The touch screen funcionalities are decent... With it 800GHz processador this phone is pretty decent and can handle anything as of now... I would only recommend this phone to ppl who like to txt, chat, of the like... Not a gamin phone at all... The down side which is a given or trade for the amazing QWERTY is the small size 2.4" screen i believe it is... However the pixels this small size screen contains is beyond imagination packs the same pixels as high end phones... Due to it being a white phone... I recomend this to a clean freak type of guy... As well... Or else get a case for it... The other down side is that due it supporting such impressive screen, 3G, all means of chat and social networks... Drains the batteryyy very very hastely... So b ware of it.. it is a given that it will need to b charged every night... But if u use it more than avg it might require some charging durin the day...

As of the supplier.. it was excellent... Got it in the time frame no much hassle

Excellent phone, but a bit dated now

I bought this phone about 6 months after in first came out, and I've loved it ever since. Two years later, it's starting to show its age, especially when compared with some of the newer Android phones, but it's by no means obsolete; it still does everything I need it to do (e-mail, web, video, navigation/maps, texting, and phone calls). I use the facebook and Twitter apps, which both run great, although some of the newest, most resource-heavy apps are a bit slower.

If you're looking for a lightning-fast smartphone to serve as your mobile computer, go ahead and spend $500 for something like the Galaxy S; if you're budget conscious, and just want a smartphone to check your e-mail, occasionally surf the web, get directions and navigation, and use as a phone, rather than a Gameboy, this phone is a great choice.

G1 good but old

The T-Mobile G1 isn't a bad smart phone. The thing to remember though is it was the first android phone in the world and is about 2 to 2 and a half years old. People who complain about battery life need to understand that android phones in general use a TON of battery life but there are apps to help just like on windows. I recommend downloading Advanced Task Killer from the android market. These phones run like computers. Any open apps continue to run in the background so they consume memory and battery. The G1 is still a great phone but it just can't keep up with any of the new androids. It was top of the line when it launched but once again that was over two years ago so people looking for speed will want to stay away from it.

Got mobile in excellent condition

This is first time I ordered a mobile from Amazon. This was a risk for me but when I opened the packed I was relieved. The mobile is in good condition and working fine. I liked this HTC due to Google applications but the mobile seems to be slower than I can use. I am using it in India and have GPRS (internet) in mobile. But my mobile works very slow while connected to internet.

the perfect phone.... mmm

This is one good phone, well built... I just loved it. It intdgrates all my fav apps, facebook, mails, zune... All synchronized. The touch responds quick.

interesing but 1 big problem

Microsoft has changed their operating system completely in this new version of windows phone 7. It is an interesting approach trying to connect and simplify administraction of phone, social media, etc, but they have not included a very important feature: usb sync for outlook. You just can't do it, even if you uprgade to windowws phone 7.5 (mango). For me this is a big problem as I do not want to have all my private info in the cloud and get a new email address to being able to sync my data. Big mistake of windows and incredible that they missed this one. It is a big productivity loss in my opinion. It has always been an important feature and reason why I chose windows phones before. I am currebntly not using the new phone, because of this mishap...

I LOVE this phone

This is the first Android phone I've ever bought and its amazing. I'll never use a regular cellphone again. HTC has done a fantastic job at producing these android cellular devices.

Sleek and smooth. Fits right into your hand. The back cover is easy to remove and put back on. Battery, SIM CARD, and Micro-SD card are all easy to access. The phone has a HOME, MENU, CALL START, BACK, SEARCH, CALL END/POWER UP button, and a highly responsive track ball.

It took me some getting use to, but I've finally learned to manipulate this keyboard to my will. The phone comes installed with SWYPE. The keyboard can go portrait and landscape mode during SMS texting and web browsing.

Worst Phone I ever had

I think this is my second review on amazon because i never do them but for this one I need to warn people of this crap. I got the Fender edition and since I bought it I had problems with it. First it was because i couldn't use the camera because it didn't read the micro SD. Chatted with a T-Mobile rep and told me to restore the whole phone, I did and it worked for just 2 weeks, also this happened the very first day I bought it! Because I got tired of restoring the phone every time it stopped taking pics, I had to take the sd out and put it in so it would work.

But What really completely killed it was this January when finally I got the message saying that I can update to Froyo, I did and was the worst decision ever. It freezes, it doesn't load sometimes, it takes an hour to download a 200+kb app, it shuts down randomly, it over heats, the battery only last 3-4 hours without me using it at all, typing takes forever since it freezes every time you click on a letter and the only thing that can actually works fine is a solitaire app that I downloaded. I even tried to restored the phone but it's still the same and i know other people that got the same problem with their normal mytouch, so it's not because it's the Fender edition.

Positive things- well the fender edition is pretty, from the home charger to the earphones (which are uncomfortable as heck) and it had some music apps and like 50 free songs in the memory but because I restored the phone the very fist day I got it, I never heard any of the songs.

If you buy it, just don't do the froyo update if it doesn't have it already. But really, don't waste your money on this, it's obsolete by now (and it was obsolete when I bought it cuz a month later the mytouch slider came out and like 3 months after the 4g one) For less than $200 you can get a LG G2x that is way advance than this. That's what I did, my G2x is arriving at my home on Monday :D

A Phone That is Worth the Cost

I bought this phone to switch over from a blackberry. I had used android phones before and liked the operating system, but was never happy with an on screen keyboard and felt the other physical keyboards were lacking. I researched the G2 quite a while before ordering this one, and I can say I am not disappointed.

The AMOLED screen is fantastic and provides much depth and clarity. The processor (even though it is 800mHz) is snappy and you will rarely find a time that is lags. The phone does come preloaded with the standard HTC and T-mobile apps that you will probably not ever use; but come on, that is what rooting a phone is for, right. The call quality is great, all though I wish the speakerphone would be a little louder, but it is not bad. The physical keyboard is one of the best keyboards on a phone yet.

I would recommend this phone to someone who is looking for a powerful phone that will compete with the newer phones on the market or someone looking for a phone with a great physical keyboard.

As for the other reviewers problems, I have had no issue with the headphone jack or the notification light. The notification light in the speaker grill of the phone lets me know when there is a message as well as the trackpad lights up. I am also able to send messages to multiple people at once.

Awesome phone, amazing speed, touchscreen response is fabulous

I have always had iPhone or Nokia phones, this is my first Android phone and honestly it is amazing.

While ordering I was worried about the touch screen response and slowness of the cell phone, but this phone has surprised me in both those factors.

The built of the phone is not at all bulky in-spite of a physical keyboard.

The design of the phone is solid and the buttons don't feel flimsy at all.

I am on a T-mobile 4G data plan and I am using this phone to tether data (as a Wi-Fi hotspot) to myiPad and it works perfectly - without 14.99$ extra charge from T-mobile specifically for tethering :)

With 5MP camera, HD recording, 4G capabilities, and Gingerbread platform, I would rate this phone 9/10 !

Finally!... a decent phone

Ive had all kinds of cellphones in my day. Finally find one that can meet and exceed my expectations. Great battery life with great reception. Came with 2.2 and unlocked like it was posted. Some scuffs but that was expected. Nothing too major. Great phone for a great price.

The Best T-Mobile Slider Smartphone PERIOD!!!

This phone does it all!!! You can watch movies, listen to music and surf the web and each of these things can be done while talking on the phone with it! Android 2.2 features live wallpapers, which look really cool, but drain battery life. With 'Power Manager' app, my battery lasts ALL DAY LONG with normal wallpaper! TONZ of apps and customizability! I'm synced with my office email and my personal one! I can even view attachments straight from my phone email inbox! It has Flash so I can view any website. It has a camera button and a flash. Allows me to video record and take pics and immediately share them via MMS, email, Facebook or Flicker. Videos allow you to immediately share via Youtube! My case has a stand, so I can sit it up and watch movies in both landscape and portrait mode! I can tether my phone to my computer or laptop via USB or wirelessly with 3g connection, which on T-Mobile has tested as fast as Sprint's 4G and even faster in some areas! This can only be done on Android 2.2, but it's pretty cool! I can print documents from the phone to my printer at home from anywhere!

The only things it's lacking in features is a Front Facing Camera, a significant amount of app and/or internal memory, a High Definition Camera/Camcorder and an actual radio, but TuneRadio resolves this in the GREATEST WAY!!!

It's better than ANY OTHER SLIDER PHONE currently out IMO! It ranked third in speed amongst the TOP cellphones currently!

Nice phone, no objections

I have been using an iPhone for 2 years and when I got this phone, It changed how I thought about mobile computing.

Android is not a toy product. It's massively customizable and you may need to have a little geek in you to like it. The keyboard is nice but will take some getting used to. Even though I have never had a slider phone before, it seems a bit wooboly.

Overall, I your not looking for the next superphone and just use it for basic apps, this phone should be perfect for you.

Decent features, good price

This is the first Android phone I've owned. The ability to customize this phone is pretty good. Picture quality is not bad, although I wish the flash was more powerful. This is just picking at little annoyances, though. The overall package of this phone is good and quite complete. I'm not a big fan of 'swipe' technology (where you use one continuous finger motion to type words). I prefer to use the sliding keyboard to type where I need to.

This is a decent first smart phone or first Android phone to experience. HTC did a good job with the screen sensitivity and ability to personalize this phone. The battery life is directly proportional to how many applications you have open AND whether you have the wireless/GPS/mobile always on. Overall a good phone for the price, with a decent feature set.

Very nice gadget

I received mine in the end of December. A month is probably not enough to discover all bugs but so far I'm happy with the phone.

First of all, it is really fast. The 1GHz processor does it's job.

The screen resolution is high and the screen size is big enough to surf the web with comfort.

HTC shell is something new to me (I used to have E-ten with Spb Mobile shell) but getting used to it.

Cannot say that I'm impressed with the still picture quality (SE phones have better pictures with less Mpx) but video recording is relatively good. There is no button for shutter so you always have to click on the screen to take picture - not convenient.

I need to charge my phone every second day - that definitely exceeded my expectations, taking into consideration fast processor and big hi-res screen.

The screen uses almost full width of the body, which sometimes causes unexpected clicks when I grab the phone (slowly getting used to it). When browsing e-mails the shell has button "reply to all" on the left side and when you click it, it changes to "send". One time I grabbed the phone and it replied to all and sent an empty message to a huge distribution list. So keep it in mind and be careful ;) I hope there will be a way to protect it somehow.

The phone is bigger than I expected - it's exactly the size of 12oz beer can (you can hide one behind the phone).

The sound level and quality in conversations is excellent. Also, my Highlander hands-free connects very quickly with good sound level.

So far I did not have chance to use built-in GPS. I don't expect anything special comparing to other similar phones.

It does not have a stylus. If you turn the phone, full size keyboard is big enough but.. I think I will get a stylus. At least you need one, when you surf Internet.

Overall - some little flaws, which I found so far, will not be enough to downgrade my 5 star rating. I really enjoy the phone and recommend it to others who is ready to spend [...] bucks on a gadget.

Expectations exceeded

OK! I bought this phone considering two main reasons:

1.- I wanted a Widows mobile phone

2.- I wanted a gigantic screen to surf the web, watch videos and pictures, etc.

This phone runs Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense which is an excellent HTC Shell, brilliant, executive, serious, innovative, useful, customizable and extremely user friendly. First request has been fulfilled.

This is the greatest screen you'll find... There's just 1 device that comes closer (Toshiba TG01) and it is 0.2 inches smaller (Toshiba 4.1" / HD2 4.3") So my second reason is clearly covered. Indeed it is bigger than what I thought and I am obviously happy about it.

Extras: A LOT!!! The design is perfect, but device's pictures describes it better than my words, it is so elegant and I like it very much.

Camera resolution is fine (not the best) but it does its job. Still pictures are very nice and video recording quality is also very good. I am very impressed about taking still pictures on dark environments beacuse it gets a highly brilliant and beautiful pictures. Its two led flash allows you to photograph almost anything on black dark environments (as long as it is closer enought to light it)

The capacitive screen prevents unwanted touches from any other thing that is not your finger (or skin) and it has a proximity sensor so you won't click buttons with your face when talking on the phone. This proximity sensor turns off the screen when you place the phone on your ear and turns it back on when removed.

Battery life is amazing considering 1GHz processor and extra giant screen, I get more than 24hrs of power listening to music, placing and receiving calls, sending and receiving SMS, MMS, surfing the web through WiFi, GPRS, EDGE or 3G (any available) and "playing" with GPS, google maps, Garmin, etc.

It comes with an extremely addictive game (Teeter) that uses the built-in accelerometer to move a ball while you move the phone, the objective is to insert the ball in a green hole preventing the gray ones.

It has a built-in connection with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Windows Live, so your contacts are always up-to-date with status, tweets, profile pictures and even birthdays! (it stores birthdays on the calendar and alerts you on the go)

Microsoft has a very useful software "MyPhone" (not exclusive for this device but 4 all Windows Mobile phones) which allows you to sync contacts, calendar, pictures, text messages, music, documents, storage card contents and even location. This lets you change your device and by simply synchronizing with a couple of clicks, your new device will be exactly as the old one, and you don't even need a computer 'cause it stores the content on your Windows Live account. (I've heard about a lot of BB users who loses their contacts when updating the BB messenger) So this deserves a big "Hurrah" for Microsoft. I found it soooo useful and important.

The stock manager allows you to keep track of your stocks, always up-to-date, it can even show graphics for 1 day behavior, 5 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 and 2 years.

Storage card is placed below the back cover and it is not below the battery, so you can change it while phone is still on. It supports up to 32 GB microSD HC.

Applications included are very useful, I saw a review that talks about the simple calculator and this is wrong... it is not so simple, it has a simple calculator when holding the phone in a vertical position and you can get a scientific calculator if you turn your phone and hold it horizontal.

The MP3 trimmer allows you to cut an MP3 file in a determinated position and save and extract of it to use it as a ringtone.

Office Mobile includes OneNote where you can write using the keyboard or handwritting. (I also read a review that says that this phone won't let you handwrite to create a message), this is also wrong... you can turn on this function on the keyboard options while you are writting your message.

WorldCard Mobile (found on tools) is an OCR recognition engine that lets you take a picture of a bussiness card and it recongnizes names, email, website, address, phones, etc and save it to a new contact so you don't have to write it manually.

Remote Desktop Mobile lets you connect to any PC, the digital compass can be combined with google maps to get directions or orientate on unknown places and this HD2 can be configured as a WiFi router to use your mobile internet connection everywhere (GPRS, EDGE or 3G) so your laptop will be always online no matter where you are, it can connect to a network or bluetooth printer to print your documents on the go including Acrobat PDF documents. The Opera browser and even IE are flash compatible and you can navigate almost as if you are in front of your desktop PC.

The performance for this device is impressive with its 1GHz processor and as if this is not enought out there are millions of software apps that can be installed and customize your phone covering all your needs.

So, I can see no reasons why not to buy this monster. I hope that my review helps you decide what you want.

Windows Phones Make a Comeback

As an avid user of smartphones, for years I've completely ignored a series of dull, uncreative phones running windows. While a variety of hardware form factors, some even technically superior to the competition, have come out, the software continued to look incredibly boring compared to the iPhone, Android, and even Blackberry. The main selling points consisted of "It runs windows and has a start button like you're used to on a computer" and "We have Office and sync with Outlook!". While these may have appealed to some business customers, the consistently shrinking market share of Windows phones demonstrated their lack of appeal to consumers as the recent smartphone boom hit.

With the HD2 this trend may finally be coming to an end. In conjunction with HTCs beautiful Sense interface, some aggressive hardware, and some genuine innovations, the HD2 is a Windows phone I can actually use and recommend. Let's start with the pros and follow up with a few drawbacks.

**Hardware**

-The 1ghz Snapdragon processor coupled with 448mb of ram is blazing fast. This is the fastest speed in a phone currently available. The HD2 loads everything quickly, and can run multiple apps at the same time. You can feel how fast the phone runs by playing with it for a few minutes. Gone are the sluggish Windows Phones of old, constantly running out of memory and crashing. The HD2 is fast and has top notch hardware and you can feel it.

-The screen is huge: 4.3 inches and stretching from corner to corner. The Resolution at 800x480 pixels means you'll see much more on that big screen than average. That means more room for icons and that sexy weather display on the main screen.

-The HD2 supports 3g on T-mobile, including the upcoming higher speed 3g. This means the fastest downloads and best call quality available. Note: the phone does NOT have ATTs 3g bands and the 3g will not work if you're using it unlocked on ATT.

-5mp camera with auto focus and 2 LEDs. 5mp is the highest we see on most phones, and the camera looks great. Having not 1 but 2 LEDs for flash seems a bit silly but works well. The phone even comes standard with a little flashlight app for a blindingly bright way to see in the dark.

-Included 3.5mm jack - this is becoming standard on most phones, and it's great to see it on the HD2. This allows you to use standard headphones without an adapter when playing music or listening to the built in FM Radio.

-Included wifi, bluetooth, and a hardware (real) GPS for turn by turn directions round out all the bells and whistles included in the phone.

-Battery life is similar to most smartphones. You will easily get a day's use without having to charge, but most likely you'll have to plug it in at night.

**Interface**

-HTC Sense is what really makes the phone shine here. This part of the software is done by HTC, not Windows, and runs on top of standard Windows Mobile 6.5 professional. HTC Sense expands on the previous TouchFLO 3d interface and enhances the way customers interact with the phone. Sense creates the beautiful Today screen, animations for messages, social networking features. It also lets you interact with the phone in unique ways, such as pinching to zoom. Some of these features are so close to the iPhone that Apple has recently filed lawsuits against HTC.

-The home screen is customizable, though not quite to the extent of Android phones. It lets you place a few apps on the screen, along with a beautiful standard weather app that detects your phone's location and shows the current time and weather in your city.

-Touch is a much better experience on this phone than previous windows mobile phones. The screen is capacitive, meaning it uses touch instead of pressure. No awkward stylus or pushing is needed for the touch to work. The phone responds quickly and smoothly to any motions.

-Basic phone features like placing a call or sending a text remain simple, with big buttons on the main screen to do so.

-Typing on the touchscreen is a breeze due to the size of the screen allowing for a bigger keyboard. As someone who has often stuck to phones with hardware keyboards due to inaccurate screen keyboards, I found typing on the HD2 much easier than previous touchscreen keyboards, although still not as easy as using a hardware keyboard. The HD2 also includes the new SWYPE interface, which lets you type by dragging your fingers through all the letters of a word instead of tapping each one. SWYPE was surprisingly accurate in typing the correct word and will even learn new words once you type them manually.

**Included Apps and Accessories**

-This phone is being marketed as a media phone, and includes several media apps to demonstrate that. MobiTV lets you watch what is essentially Cable TV on your phone free for 30 days and then ten dollars a month after that. Blockbuster lets you rent or buy movies for your phone. Barnes and Noble eReader lets you purchase ebooks.

-The phone comes with a huge 16gb MicroSD card out of the box. This is the biggest memory card available currently, and gives you plenty of room for pictures, videos, music, and apps. The best memory card pairs perfectly with the best processor and screen, and it's great that HTC did not hold back on this extra.

-Full videos of Transformers 1 and 2 are preloaded on the memory card. These videos look great and show off the beautiful screen. Note the movies do take about 4gb of space on the memory card.

-The phone comes with a gel skin in the box to protect the phone, which you would have to buy separately on most phones.

**Drawbacks**

-Price is the number one concern here. The phone is priced higher than competing smartphones. This price seems justified, however, due to the cutting edge hardware in the HD2. It also comes with some nice accessories you'd have to buy separately from other phones. Upgrade and new customer deals will certainly lower the cost for those buying from T-mobile.

-The app store is another drawback. The good news is that the phone has one, the bad news is it's the smallest of ANY smartphone operating system. As of this review the Windows Marketplace carried less than 1,000 applications, compared to Android at 20,000 apps and iPhone at a staggering 150,000 apps. Even Blackberry, Palm, and Nokia carry more apps than Windows. You are also going to find significantly more paid than free applications for Windows Mobile apps. The Marketplace is simply far behind that of competing phones, which for a heavy app user will diminish the enjoyment of the HD2 by quite a bit.

-Windows Mobile 7 upgradeability is still up in the air, but it currently looks like this phone will NOT be getting an upgrade when the new OS is released. The phone does not support some key hardware feature (front buttons) that WM7 requires, and therefore it is unlikely to be upgraded. The upcoming OS promises to be very exciting, and the fact that this beautiful phone will probably not receive the upgrade is disappointing.

Overall this phone is fast, pretty, and offers top of the line features. The phone feels solid (and huge) in your hand, while the software is fast, works well and is fun to use. If the HD2 is any indicator, Windows Mobile may become a legitimate competitor in the smartphone market again. The phone seems to be selling very well, with T-mobile selling out almost everywhere the day the HD2 was released. I'd recommend this phone as a viable alternative to Android and the iPhone.

Sensation-al!

First of all, I would like to mention that I purchased the unlocked version because I do not live in the U.S. and I do not use any of the carriers available there (T-mobile, AT&T, etc), and regardless the service is GREAT! It is not surprising to me though. I pretty much expected it, considering the fact that I owned a HTC Touch Pro 2, and the service was awesome as well. My previous LG viewty phone would hardly ever get me through to the end of a call, I almost always had dropped calls with it. I would also like to mention that I also owned two nokias, a samsung, and a motorola. NONE can compare to my HTC Sensation. I feel rich just holding it and the HTC sense feature is so fun and efficient!

My Pros:

-Awesome GPS and Navigation system

-The clarity of the 8 MP camera is amazing, and its autofocus is to die for, it is so precise

-The internet speed is great!

-The vibrant screen!

-ANDROID OS is a plus!

-The blinking light to let me know I have a missed call, a new facebook message, and/or a new chat message

-The fact that I can incorporate ALL my emails into one window, and choose a default email address from which I can reply to all emails

- It just has so many options for me, expecially when it comes to editing files and I feel as if it is so easy to use for anyone that is not really tech-savvy.

- Honestly though, hands down, best phone ever!!! All my previous phones have either broken, and got tired of me over-using them, with this one, so far so good.

My Cons:

- The Battery Life can go by really quickly. I charged twice already for the day. I am a heavy user though, I check emails, and use social networks as well as take pictures/videos, edit work files and listen to the radio. I need to invest in a car charger.

- I wish there was a camera button on the side of the phone, so that one click and bam, I can take a picture. But it is not a major deal, and I don't really miss it as much. I guess when you're used to something, you tend to miss it for a while. with this phone, I have to click unlock, and drag and drop, then VOILA, the camera is on. A few extra steps that I feel might make me lose my camera moment. I don't know, I am still on the fence with this one.

- The memory... It comes with an SD card, but when there are no apps running, I have 467MB of used space and 91MB of free space, and I panic, because I need space to store my work documents, so again, I have to invest in some storage for this baby.

Regardless of my cons, I love this phone, and I am glad I got it. I was scared to purchase a phone that did not have a physical keyboard, this is my phone FULL touch screen phone, and it was a choice between HTC desire Z and this, and the keyboard is so accurate, even with me typing fast, so no regrets. Love it!

The HTC Sensation is great phone!

I've been using the HTC Sensation for about 3 months now, and I find the quality of the phone to be excellent in these main areas: audio - I can be heard clearly even outside on the street with extensive background noise and I can hear the other person just as well; display - this phone has one of the largest displays I've seen in phones, it's great for movies or video games; the visuals on the phone are clear and sharp, the colors are rich and are accurate to the subject. This phone has an extensive feature set and you can customize almost everything on it, I've just scratched the surface of its many features. The 8 mp camera feature is excellent, it takes pictures that are true to the subject, I haven't had a problem like red eye or shifting of the colors in my pictures.

This phone has extensive Internet apps, my Internet connection has been really fast and the built-in browser works extremely well. I've been able to surf the Web, use the map application successfully as a GPS to be able to tell which way to travel when going to a destination, and I find this particular feature to be helpful in locating where you are and the streets around you. In addition, it's a handy tool to have when you're trying to locate stores and places to eat.

However, you should be aware that if you use the phone extensively for Internet applications and for numerous voice calls, you will drain the battery and will have to charge it very often, possibly daily.

iPhone vs. Android

In the amazon tradition of writing a long essay/short novel to review a product, scroll down to the last paragraph if you are interested in the short version of what i have to say. The following is an introduction to why I bought the HTC Sensation in the first place.

Since 2009 I was the proud owner of an iPhone that came as a substitution for my ever-growing need for PDAs (I don't remember how I had any work done before iMates and Palm Pilots). After I got to learn my way around an iPhone it became impossible for me to imagine functioning normally through a whole day without the frequent click on the home button and the scroll to unlock. I trust most readers here are familiar with the "at-home" feeling of that. Hold on, this is a review of HTC Sensation not an iPhone so keep reading. iPhones introduced me to a whole new world of apps that I didn't think doable and that made life a little bit easier after every "buy this app" click. I was really satisfied. Of course there was the not-so-uncommon occurrence of a complete freeze of the interface and the battery that needed charging every two hours and the awful quality of the headsets and USB cables.

On March 2011, I was bored to tears in an international transit passenger lounge somewhere (I spend 10 months a year flying international), I stop at the little duty free electronic store and have a chat with the attendant. Up till this point, I had a completely functional iPhone, mind you. To save you all the technical mumbo-jumbo, the HTC sensation had 4G capabilities and it works on all major cellular carriers bands (unlike iPhone that wouldn't even get lousy 3G on t-mobile due to incompatibility).

So, I bought it solely for the fact that I could connect to 4G (which, for those of you who have never connected to the net via 4G, makes 3G feels like an old fashion dial-up connection and good old 2G Edge is like holding two cups tied with a tight rope).

During the following 2 weeks I ran experiments with my iPhone and HTC, both were working on the same carrier (t-mobile, U.S.) and suffices to say the iPhone has "accidentally" dropped on the ground and shattered.

Now, to summerize why I've given this phone 5 stars.

I love that the phone never ever stalls.

I love that I switch carriers and my phone is always fully responsive and it has all functionalities.

I love that I can update the operating system by downloading it on cellular data (4G, 3G or even Edge) and not having to go to a wifi spot with my laptop to spend the next half hour downloading those large apps and and the frequent system update (that's on iPhones, on HTC I had only 1 system update over 10 months).

I love the wifi hotspot that allows me to connect to 4G on my Sensation and then browse the Internet on my laptop with a speed that's much better than the average wifi spot.

I love that I'm in complete control of my phone so I can actually stop apps from running in the background (a feature that is extremely helpful when you have business meetings over the net and you don't want anything to go wrong just before the CEO goes insane and commits suicide on live webcam).

I love the widgets on the interface.

I love the graphics and animations of the wall paper.

I love the short-cuts they have (with a click you can see all your pages/screens).

Most of all, I love the mini USB plug which makes life a whole lot easier charging all your devices with one charger than going to Wal Mart in the middle of the night to find an iPhone charger.

The list of things I love about the phone goes on and on. From a long time user of smart phones and PDAs, I think this device is the Perfect smart phone.

Now, the bad. The other reviews mentioned disadvantages that I think more of a personal preference rather than a real drawback. However, the battery is the worst thing on the short list of this device's negative features. If I don't connect to the Internet, the battery lasts for 5-7 days. As it is, I always have my 4G, wifi and Bluetooth on. I end up charging the device every night (sometimes twice a day).

The second worst thing is the app store. Compared to the apple app store, the HTC app store is shameful. It's getting there but the number of the apps is by far inferior to the apple store.

Aside from this, I highly recommend this phone for business purposes and for pleasure (not as entertaining a device as iPhones but all in all).
