There are a number of websites that show the past sales of domain names. You can learn how the pricing goes, and just how much the largest sales are in each market. Sometimes the asking prices might surprise you but historically, the better domains have commanded significant prices - and rightly so. They have natural traffic, command respect, are the strongest for branding, and they represent the leader in a market. Some sites that show prices include DnJournal.com, and NameBio.com.

It might be tempting to use some other kind of domain (they are called TLD's) but .Com has proven, time and time again, that it commands not only the most respect, but has the highest rate of user-recall when used in advertising.
