Five best features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Google announced Jelly Bean, also known as Android 4.1, on Wednesday. The shiny new operating system brings new features such as a speedier interface, a new Camera app, offline voice typing, significantly improved notifications, a Siri-like voice search, Google Now and more. Here are the features we've enjoyed using the most so far.

Project Butter

There's been a lot of talk about something called "Project Butter" during the Google I/O developers conference and unsurprisingly the whole thing doesn't have anything to do with dairy products. Instead it's what Google has labeled the under-the-hood improvements which keep Jelly Bean running — I couldn't resist this line, I'm sorry — like butter.

Buffering tweaks, increased frame rates, a system which keeps rendering and touch input events in sync better, and touch prediction come together to make everything run just a little bit more nicely. (Yes, Jelly Bean actually tries to predict where you'll touch the screen next.)

It's tough to tell how much of a difference Project Butter will truly make, but based on a bit of time with a Nexus 7 tablet running Jelly Bean, it seems as if Jelly Bean runs more smoothly than prior Android versions. amd it's important for Google to take steps to make the Android experience as smooth as possible.

Offline voice typing

How annoying is it when you can't dictate something to your phone because you don't have a cellular or Wi-Fi data connection? Jelly Bean makes this pesky issue a thing of the past with offline voice typing.

When your device has a poor data connection or no connection at all, voice-to-text tasks are crunched locally instead of in the cloud.

So how good is it? Good enough and speedy enough. The reason that companies like Google and Apple put voice recognition in the cloud in the first place is that it makes it easier to run your voice against thousands of samples in the blink of an eye. So it's no surprise that the offline voice-to-text is slightly less accurate than the cloud-based version, which has been my experience.

Google Now

I have a hunch that we'll be talking about Google Now a lot in the future. It's Google's attempt to predict what you'll need and get it to you before you even realize you need it. In theory, your device should learn your habits, interests and so on, and then offer up relevant traffic, weather and point-of-interest information.

I don't know whether it's the lousy Wi-Fi and cellular connection I get in this part of San Francisco or whether Google Now just has to get to know me better before taking charge of my life, but for whatever reason I am not being offered much information. We'll circle back and chat about this feature after I've used it more, but I'm willing to label it as one of Jelly Bean's best attributes based on its potential alone.

Voice search

S-Voice, the Siri competitor included on the Samsung Galaxy S III, was a total letdown in my opinion, but Google's handling things much better.

Google's voice search is now powered by Knowledge Graph, meaning that you'll receive what Google deems to be the best answer to your query first, followed by relevant web results. In some quick tests, Google's voice search definitely made Siri look terrible, as the iOS-based assistant has a bad habit of simply offering to search teh web for you in situations where Google already has an answer.

Notifications

I may be an iOS fangirl who is so attached to her iPhone that she sleeps with it right next to her head, but even I have to admit that Google's definitely doing something right with notifications.

In Jelly Bean, the notification bar can do more than ever. It can now expand, to show you a portion of your inbox, rather than just the number of emails waiting for you. (Yes, this is similar to one of the display options for email notifications in iOS, but those can't be compacted with a touch.)

Google Now cards also appear in the notifications tray, meaning that you can view relevant information just by opening the notifications rather than having to switch apps.

The changes to notifications are small touches, but based on some time with a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, it's easy to see that the time and frustrations they'll save you will quickly add up.

Speaking at MWC 2012, handset manufacturer Asus has seemingly confirmed the name of Google's next Android OS with 5.0 to be dubbed Jelly Bean

Whilst the new breed of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handsets are only just coming to market, manufacturer Asus has seemingly confirmed the OS follow-on Android 5.0 will be dubbed Android Jelly Bean.

Speaking with Tech Radar Asus has suggested its close relationship with Google will see it feature as one of the first brands to offer the Android 5.0 update later this year, confirming the software’s name in the process.

"Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update," said Benson Lin, Asus’ Corporate Vice President.

Continuing the sweet toothed theme of the Android mobile OS naming convention, Google has been previously rumoured to be preparing Android 5.0 Jelly Bean for an autumn 2012 launch with the likes of Samsung and Motorola tipped to manufacture the operating system’s Google branded Nexus launch handset.

With the Windows Phone 7 platform finally beginning to gain traction thanks to the release of the first Nokia Windows Phone handsets, new reports have revealed Microsoft is already looking to the next iteration of its mobile OS with the first Windows Phone 8 details leaking via an internal video.

Going by the codename ‘Apollo’ the Windows Phone 8 platform is set to adopt a flurry of new features with reports from PocketNow claiming that a Windows Phone 8 video intended for internal use has leaked revealing the next-generation WP OS will feature NFC compatibility allowing users to use their handset’s as a digital wallet.

Yesterday, we gave you a post about how to install XXLPJ Ice Cream Sandwich Firmware on Samsung Galaxy S2 which was not an official firmware and it was a custom ROM from Sammobile. Also, we informed you about the official Ice Cream Sandwich Update being released in Korea and other European countries. This new official firmware is known as the XXLPQ and in this post we will tell you how to install XXLPQ ICS Firmware on Samsung Galaxy S2. This is the official firmware and hence free of bugs
, most stable and perhaps the best of all the previous firmwares. Please note that this firmware can be applied only to Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 and not on any other variants of Samsung Galaxy S2.

Korean users are advised not to try this. There will be a separate post for you soon!

Prerequisites

Backup all your applications using ASTRO File Manager . If you have rooted your Samsung Galaxy S2 , you can use Titanium Backup for the same.
Back up all contacts to SD Card.
Make sure you have KIES installed.
Disable Anti virus and other security apps
Enable USB Debugging by Settings>Applications>Development and ensure that USB Debugging is checked.

After you back up everything, you can proceed with the steps to install this firmware.

Steps to Install Official Ice Cream Sandwich Firmware on Samsung Galaxy S2 – XXLPQ

Download Official XXLPQ Firmware | Hotfile Link.
Download Odin if you don’t have one.
Extract the files to a separate folder in your PC.
Turn off your phone
Boot into Download mode. To dot this, press the Volume Down button and Center button. While you press both, simultaneously press the Power button.
Open Odin
Connect your phone to the PC via USB. When you do this, the ID:Com in Odin must turn yellow. If it doesn’t don’t proceed to the next step.
Go to “Settings > Wireless & Network > USB Settings” and ensure that “Samsung KIES” option is ticked.
Connect your phone to the PC via USB Cable
In Odin, click on PDA and select the file I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5
Click on Start.
After the update is finished, remove the battery and re-insert it.
Boot into recovery mode. To do this, press the Volume Down Button + OK button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button.
In recovery mode, wipe all data/factory reset and wip cache partition.
Go back and select “Reboot system now”.

In a move that will surely keep the Mac and iPhone maker on top of the digital music and software application industry, Apple is preparing its first iTunes Store redesign in nearly three years. In late 2009, Apple launched a new iTunes Store that traded in a blue-themed, convoluted store for a much simpler, white-themed store that provides a great focus on the store’s downloadable content.

The redesign of the iTunes Store that runs on both the iTunes application for the Mac and the PC is a top priority for Apple. The work on the redesign comes soon after the launch of new services in the United States such as the Spotify music streaming service and the growing popularity of Amazon’s online music store. Apple dominates the majority of the digital music market, and it will continue to bet on an in-application download store and not an online store found only in a web browser.

The new design is said to be even simpler and more user-friendly than the current design. Apple is working on ways to enhance the speed and efficiency of finding new content, such as songs, videos, and applications. The cornerstone element of Apple’s new iTunes Store is interactivity. As Apple vaguely explained to a number of music labels and entertainment partners, Apple is looking to make the iTunes Store a much more engaging experience.
