Earlier this month, Google started selling Nexus One as the first super phone that would be sold by the company itself, rather than a manufacturing or carrier partner.

One of the minus point of Google Nexus One because didn’t ship with a multitouch capable web browser even though the hardware and Android 2.1 OS is fully capable of doing it.

Nexus One has a touchscreen but users can only tap on it with one finger. So none of the two-finger pinch-and-zoom gestures that are popular among iPhone users are available in Nexus One’s native web browser.Apparently because the issue of iPhone’s copyright in US market. Posibly N1 outside US has multitouch capable web browser.

Steve Kondik, a developer who goes under the nickname Cyanogen, has modified the Android 2.1 operating system running on the Nexus One to enable multitouch for the device. Though it enables the feature for the Nexus One browser, for now, it is likely to soon become a part of other applications, such as maps.

“You will initially lose your bookmarks and browser settings by doing this,” he warns. Hacking the phone could also void its warranty.

Follow the step by step instructions posted below to install the multitouch add-on for Nexus One to enable multitouch functionality. You’ll need to first root your Google phone before you follow the steps posted below.

Note: Follow the guide on your own risk. We are not to be held responsible if you end up bricking your phone.

Step 1: Follow the step by step guide posted here to root your Nexus One if you haven’t already.

Step 2: Download all the required files for Nexus One multitouch add-on from the source link here.

Step 3: Now simply add these files by running the following commands:

adb shell stop
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Browser.odex
adb push Browser.apk /system/app
adb push com.cyanogenmod.android.jar /system/framework
adb push com.cyanogenmod.android.xml /system/etc/permissions
adb shell reboot

Step 4: That’s about it! Once your phone has rebooted, run the browser to try out all the multitouch goodness!

Enjoy the video showing multitouch capability in Nexus One web browser.

On January 10, The Straits Times reported that several Nexus One owner seem to have experienced 3G problem.

Especially what happen to the Straits Times correspondent Oo Gin Lee, 40, probably the first buyer in Singapore to have received his set yesterday (January 9), said his new toy could not connect to the Internet on his telco’s 3G network. The problem persisted after he rebooted the phone twice and checked his Internet settings thrice.”I expected a lot from Google, so I am very disappointed,” said the self-professed geek who writes for the paper’s Digital Life publication.

Recently Ocworkbench reported that Google sent in a press statement to address the issues of supposedly 3G connectivity complaint in Singapore.

Here’s the Google Statement :

GOOGLE STATEMENT – Nexus One 3G connectivity for SG

There have been several media reports about 3G connectivity issues with the Nexus One. Firstly, we do apologize for any inconvenience and confusion caused to our users. There is a very simple solution for Nexus One owners in Singapore. For SingTel customers, the Nexus One should auto-connect to their 3G network. For Starhub and M1 customers, they will need to enter in their APN settings to connect to their 3G network. This can be done by any user in less than a minute:

1. Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names.

2. Hit Menu button, create new APN.

3. Enter new APN settings. See below for the details.

4. Hit Menu button, save settings.

5. Select the new APN name, then hit the home button. Your 3G connection will shortly appear in the top bar.

As the Nexus One is an unlocked device purchased online at www.google.com/phone, ideally the first place for users to look for support is the help section on this site which includes how-to videos, feature overviews, ordering/payment/set-up/warranty info, a user’s guide and help forum.

If users can’t find the answers they need, they can call the HTC Support line in Singapore at1-800-238-7788 from 8am-8pm, Monday to Saturday. HTC is providing local support and repair services for Nexus One.

Again, our sincerest apologies to our Nexus One users in Singapore if they are having any problems connecting to their telecom operator’s 3G network. We hope this simple solution will help them to enjoy the full Internet experience and the innovative mobile features of their new Nexus One phones in Singapore.

Dickson Seow
Head, Corporate Communications
Google Southeast Asia

=============

For Starhub customers:
- name: Starhub Internet
- APN: shwapint
- username: [leave blank]
- password: [leave blank]

For M1 customers:
- name: M1 Internet
- APN: sunsurf
- username: 65
- password: user123

And in case it is not working for SingTel customers:
- name: SingTel Internet
- APN: internet
- username: 65IDEAS (or blank)
- password: IDEAS (or blank)

Hopefully it will solve the 3G connectivity issue. Thanks to Google for quick response !

There was no formal product unveiling, but HP showed off a smartbook with multitouch capability, and Bradley spoke with apparent interest on the category, which is just beginning to build steam. The smartbook run on low-power ARM-based processors like Snapdragon or Nvidia’s Tegra, as opposed to netbook, which run on Intel’s x86-based Atom platform.

The HP smartbook is based on the HP Mini 1000 and utilized Qualcomm’s Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset platform with integrated Scorpion central processing unit delivering speeds up to 1GHz. The device demonstrated how long battery life, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a highly intuitive user interface and other features can meet the needs of consumers with mobile and constantly connected lifestyles.

In the other hand Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave keynote speech at CES 2010 about the high points of Windows 7 and ranging from its game technology to touch-screen interfaces.

Ballmer showed off a trio of new touchscreen PCs during presentation. He picks up the HP Slate, which he said is a prototype of a device coming later this year.

The HP Slate run on Windows 7 and appears to be a 9 or 10 inch device probably with some enhancements and dedicated software by HP to enhance the ‘touch’ experience, seeing it doesn’t have any keyboard. The 9 (or 10) inch display is a touchscreen which supports multi-touch. Functions of the HP Slate include multimedia capabilities (music and video playback), photo viewing and “reading mode”, supposedly via the Amazon Kindle app for PC.

According to NY Times, HP has so many different tablet-related projects in the works that a variety of coming publishing partners were surprised to see a Windows 7 version of the HP slate announced at the CES 2010.

A senior editor of a major magazine publishing empire working on an internal corporate project, and speaking on the condition of anonymity because of a nondisclosure agreement, told me of an array of HP tablets. He said, “I’ve seen a much smaller version of HP’s tablet that works exclusively with Android. It’s smaller than the Windows 7 version, almost like a half-pint size, or about twice as large as the iPhone.” But this may be one of many projects in development. He added, “I’ve also heard mention of a Linux version in the works, but I haven’t seen the hardware for this device.”

Collectively, numerous publisher are testing a new form of magazine on these slate-like devices that will include color images, a variety of typography and full-motion video.

According to Techcrunch’ source who has seen a prototype of HP’s Android Slate said it looks just like the Windows-powered one Ballmer held at CES 2010, maybe a little smaller. “It is almost identical in every respect to the one he showed off except for the OS,” said Techcrunch’ source.

Here’s some facts about Motorola DROID :

eWeek’s Michelle Maisto reported comparison of Motorola DROID vs iPhone :

The Motorola DROID features a 3.7-inch high-resolution touch screen with a width of 854 pixels, to reduce the need for side-to-side panning. It boasts a total of 400,000 pixels. The iPhone, by comparison, offers 480 by 320 pixels, for a total of 153,600 pixels.

Unlike the touch-screen-only iPhone, the DROID features a slide-out, four-row QWERTY keyboard. There’s also a multiwindow HTML browser, support for Gmail and Exchange, a 5-megapixel camera (the camera on the iPhone 3GS is 3 megapixels) and voice-activated Google searching.

Unlike the iPhone, the DROID has a battery that can be removed. It also features GPS and is the first device with Google Maps Navigation, which offers turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free complement to Google Maps. Users can interact with it using voice instructions, such as telling it where they want to go.

The DROID’s screen can be customized, and users will have access to what Verizon says are hundreds of available widgets and more than 12,000 applications. Like the Palm Pre—but unlike the iPhone—the DROID lets users navigate between up to six open applications at once.

The Motorola DROID will arrive on the Verizon Wireless network (CDMA 1X 800/1900, EVDO rev. A) on Nov. 6 for $199 after a rebate and with a two-year contract.

Verizon has been hyping the DROID with a tv commercial ads that highlights everything the iPhone lacks—but the DROID possesses. These include a keyboard, interchangeable batteries, the ability to run simultaneous applications and the option to customize the device with widgets.

Here’s the TV ads featuring in how DROID can beat the iPhone.
