Beware This Clever "Fake Attachment" Gmail Phishing Scam

With a little know-how, most phishing scams are pretty easy to detect. This one, on the other hand, is devilishly clever and just might dupe you if you’re not careful.

The way this phish scam works is simple. Wordfence, who brought light to the scam, says the attacker creates an email address to disguise themselves as someone you know. Then they send you an email with an attachment, like a PDF or Word doc, that looks legitimate. When you click the attachment to see a preview of it, you get redirected to a Google sign-in page where you enter your credentials.
Here’s the trick: those attachments aren’t attachments—they’re embedded images designed to look like attachments that link out to a fake Google sign-in page. You can see an example of how real they look in Tom Scott’s tweet below.

What’s worse is everything about the fake Google sign-in page looks normal. The logo, text boxes, and tagline are all there. The only difference is in the address bar, where careful eyes will see that the page is actually a data URI with the prefix “data:text/htyml”, not a URL with the standard “https://”. But if you don’t spot it, the attackers get your information and use it to send out more of the same phish emails to your contacts.
Google has since updated Chrome to 56.0.2924, which makes it easier to spot fake forms like these, but it doesn’t exactly stop this type of scam dead in its tracks. And whether you use Chrome or not, it’s important to stay vigilant and keep your eyes peeled when checking email.

The Anonymous Group: What is it and How big is it

Research proved that Anonymous hacktivists group is relatively much bigger than you anticipated and become quite popular among people all over the world but how did it all start?

The Anonymous group has been gaining a lot of attention in the past few years. This is mainly due to the way they act and the way they portray themselves. People donning Guy Fawkes masks and taking down the government and non-government agencies are sure to attract some attention, and because the activity of Anonymous is not restricted to a single country, they have gained global attention.

With many people talking about the hacktivist group, people have often wondered just how big the group is, given their widespread activities. However, that question is not easy to give a definitive answer to. As to what the group is, we take a look at that here.

Beginning

Anonymous first came in existence in 2003 when unknown users who were tagged as Anonymous posted images on 4chan’s /b/ board. The images were about random things but the Anonymous tag soon gained popularity on the website. The group then escalated their activities to internet pranks, troll events, and raiding websites like that of Habbo Hotel, a hotel in Finland.
In 2004, they started to use the website of Encyclopaedia Dramatica as a platform for their activities. For some years, they did little more than mass pranks and take action against communities that supported anti-piracy acts.

Change of Stance

In 2008, Anonymous started Project Chanology, a direct campaign against the Church of Scientology. The campaign included repeatedly carrying out DDoS attacks on the Church’s website, the Anonymous members, or Anons as they are called, used to make prank calls to the Church’s hotline, and sending black faxes to them to waste their ink cartridges. This project resulted in the group gaining global criticism from the media and authorities and global appreciation from casual internet users.

In 2010, Anonymous took their next big step, taking down the website of Aiplex software using a DDoS attack. Aiplex was a company based in India which partnered with different film studios to launch DDoS attacks against P2P sharing platforms and websites like The Pirate Bay. The group next took down the website of Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Pictures Association of America.

Under their project “Payback is a Bitch” they hacked the website of Copyright Alliance, giving their reason as an act against all those that want to silence people’s rights to spread information. After this, they attacked websites of companies like Amazon, PayPal, VISA, and Mastercard. This attack, named Operation Avenge Assange, was carried out because the aforementioned companies boycotted WikiLeaks.

Other groups and agendas of Anonymous

Anonymous is a hacktivist group that has grown enormously since it first came into existence. There are a number of groups that are associated with Anonymous, with LulzSec and Operation AntiSec. These groups have also targeted government agencies, video game companies, media groups, etc. LulzSec was formed after Anonymous attack HBGarry.

Speaking about the philosophy behind Anonymous, there is no particular set of guidelines that the group follows. It is merely a vast and intricate network of like-minded hackers who work with common ideas and goals. Recently, they have been involved in taking down Donald Trump’s Trump Towers’ website following the presidential candidate’s remarks on Muslim immigrants in the USA.

However, the most notable of Anonymous projects, which has gained them the most admirers, is their campaign against ISIS. The group are quite active in taking down any website that copies or spreads the propaganda of the terrorist outfit. They that had moved to the dark net, posting a message next to an advert for a pharmaceutical company that sold Prozac and Viagra. The group have also acted against paedophile websites, saying that they are against the injustice of any kind.

Top 5 Websites To Learn How To Hack Like A Pro

You might be surprised to learn just how many people want to learn how to hack. The stereotype is that of the young college guy – a computer science major for sure – who spends his evenings and weekends writing up intricate hacking scripts to break into whatever computer system he can get his hands on.

The truth is that what was once a male-dominated community is fast changing into one that includes folks – men and women – from many walks of life, from many countries and with many backgrounds. A recent CNET article about DEFCON makes note of the fact that claims of sexual harassment and unwanted advances are increasing. This isn’t because hackers are getting more obnoxious or offensive, but because more female hackers are entering into the community and trying to find a home there, only to find insulting behavior, and other actions unbecoming of a gentleman.

This is the natural evolution of such communities, and in time the scales will balance and men and women will hack side by side – but when searching for places to go online to learn how to hack, it’s important to remember that because demographics and the world itself is changing, what you’ll find at most of the hacker websites are also changing significantly as well.

Platforms in use are shifting from computer-based to more mobile and tablet hacking efforts, there’s much greater emphasis on social networks and the many hacks that are possible there, and all of the other new technologies and hacker tools available. The sites that keep up with these changing times will survive, while those that are stuck in the decades-old mentality of hackerdom-gone-by are doomed to fail.

Where You Can Go To Learn How To Hack Like a Pro

There’s a caveat that I have to share before diving into these sites. Hacking isn’t a single subject that anyone can pick up overnight. In the title of this article, I mention hacking like a pro. This can not be accomplished after reading one article and visiting a few of these sites – the phrase is used to imply that in time and with lots of practice, you can in fact learn to hack like a pro.

For our many readers that are already at that expert-hacker level, a few of these sites may not be for you. They may feel too simple and basic – for “script-kiddies” as some might say. The truth is, we all had to start somewhere, and these websites are offered as a starting point for those people just embarking down the wrote toward hackerdom.

Your intention for learning how to hack is completely your own. I do not judge. However, it should be noted that there are two forms of hacking – “white hat” and “black hat”. White hat hackers call themselves “ethical hackers”, in that they find vulnerabilities simply to make systems and applications more secure for everyone. However, there’s a whole other community of hackers – the black hats – who find vulnerabilities only to exploit them as much as possible. Now that you know what sort of community you may be entering, let’s get on with the list of top sites where you can learn to hack.

#1 – Hacking Tutorial: Tech Tips and Hacking Tricks

Sometimes, perfect English isn’t everything. Hacking Tutorial is an example of when the writing skill of the author doesn’t necessarily equate to the quality of his or her technical knowledge. This is actually the case over at Hacking Tutorial, where the author offers articles like “Client Side Attack Using Adobe PDF Escape EXE Social Engineering”, “Exploiting MS11_003 Internet Explorer Vulnerability”, and “Hacking Using BeeF XSS Framework”.

The articles are usually short, but actually offer highly technical, step-by-step instructions on how to do the task at hand, and the tricks and tweets absolutely work, unless the exploit has been patched. It’s a small blog, but it’s a good one for the volume of technical tricks that you’ll find there.

#2 – EvilZone Hacking Forums

While the name, EvilZone, isn’t exactly the most inviting – it is easily one of the largest forum communities that you’ll find on the subject of hacking. With over 13,042 members and over 50,000 posts (and counting), this community likely has the skills and knowledge to answer any programming question you could possibly have. Just be careful about coming across as a “noob” – these guys don’t handle newcomers with kid gloves, so be careful.

You’d definitely be best off working through the programming and encyclopedia sections first, where you’ll find areas with projects, tutorials and a lot more that will help you become educated and well-versed in hacking techniques and terminology.

#3 – Hack a Day

While I certainly don’t want to offer a nod to any blogs that may be considered competition, you really have to give credit where credit is due when it comes to a particular niche like hacking – and Hack a Day definitely offers an amazing library of information for anyone looking for specific categories like cellphones, GPS or digital cameras. Over the years, Hack A Day has transformed the site into a fairly popular blog.

More than any other site, this particular “hacking” site is very much hardware based, and they redefine the meaning of the word hacking by helping you learn how to hack up electronic devices like a Gameboy or a digital camera and completely modifying it, or building electronics for the sole purpose of hacking other commercial devices. You’ll also find a popular and busy forum section as well – a high point of the site.

While I personally don’t find the articles themselves very detailed (as an EE, I like schematics and elaborate descriptions), the site makes up for it with video demonstrations throughout.

#4 – Hack In The Box

Hack In The Box has really change significantly through the years. It is rebranded as HITB, and the site is completely transformed into what looks like a WordPressed-based platform. Still, today Hack In The Box remains focused on security and ethical hacking. However, it has obviously shifted gears at some point and changed to a more content-focused approach with a greater volume of news, and fewer in-depth articles with detailed hacks.

This transition makes it less of a place to go for actually technical hacking tips, and more of a daily spot to get your latest fix of hacking news. The site is updated frequently, and of course you can also go for the print version of the HITB-branded magazine if you want.

Clearly, HITB has gone very commercialized, but it is a great resource for news for anyone interested in the latest gossip throughout the hacking community.

Hacking WPA/WPA2 without dictionary/bruteforce

Fluxion (linset)

I hadn't ventured into Hackforums since a while, and this time when I went there I saw a thread about a script called Fluxion. It's based on another script called linset (actually it's no much different from linset, think of it as an improvement, with some bug fixes and additional options). I did once think about (and was asked in a comment about) using something like a man in the middle attack/ evil twin attack to get WPA password instead of going the bruteforce/dictionary route, but never looked the idea up on the internet nor spent much time pondering over it. However, once I saw the thread about this cool script, I decided to give it a try. So in this post I'll show you how I used Fluxion, and how you can too.
Disclaimer : Use this tool only on networks you own .Don't do anything illegal.

Just double checking

The first thing I did was make sure that Kali doesn't already have this tool. Maybe if you are reading this post a long time after it was written, then you might have the tool pre-installed in Kali. In any case, try this out:

fluxion

I, personally tried to check if linset or fluxion came pre-installed in Kali (though I didn't expect them to be there).

Getting the script

Getting the script is just a matter of cloning the github repository. Just use the git command line tool to do it.

If you have any problems with this step, then you can just naviagate to the repostitory and manually download the stuff.

Update : There seems to be some legal trouble with Fluxion. The creator of the script has removed the source code of the tool, and uploaded code that is supposed to delete fluxion from your computer. I don't know the specifics of what is going on, but will provide updates ASAP.

Update : Now the repository is gone altogether!
What this means : As of now, this tutorial is useless. If you can find the source code for Fluxion, then you can use it and continue with the tutorial. Otherwise, not much can be done without the tool.

Update Again!
You can try this repo - https://github.com/wi-fi-analyzer/fluxion. It's an old version, might or might not work.

There are 4 dependencies that need to be installed

Running the script

Just navigate to the fluxion directory or the directory containing the scripts in case you downloaded them manually. If you are following the terminal commands I'm using, then it's just a simple change directory command for you:

cd fluxion

Now, run the script.

sudo ./fluxion

Dependencies

If you have any unmet dependencies, then run the installer script.

sudo ./Installer.sh

I had 4 unmet dependencies, and the installer script run was a buggy experience for me (though it might be becuase I have completely screwed up my system, editing files I wasn't supposed to and now I can't get them back in order) .It got stuck multiple times during the process, and I had to ctrl+c my way out of it many times (though ctrl+c didn't terminate the whole installer, just the little update popup). Also, I ran the installer script twice and that messed up with some of the apt-get settings. I suggest that after installation is complete, you restore your /etc/apt/sources.list to it's original state, and remove the bleeding edge repositories (unless you know what you're doing). To know what your repository should look like, take a look here.

Anyways, one way or the other, your unmet dependencies will be resolved, and then you can use Flexion.
PS: For those trying to use apt-get to install the missing stuff - some of the dependencies aren't available in the default Kali repos, so you'll have to let the script do the installation for you, or manually add the repos to /etc/apt/sources.list (look at the script to find out which repos you need to add)

Fluxion

Once again, type the following:

sudo ./fluxion

This time it should run just fine, and you would be asked a few very simple questions.

For the wireless adapter, choose whichever one you want to monitor on. For the channels question, choose all, unless you have a specific channel in mind, which you know has the target AP.
Then you will see an airodump-ng window (named Wifi Monitor). Let it run while it looks for APs and clients. Once you think you have what you need, use the close button to stop the monitoring.

Fluxion using airodump-ng

You'll then be prompted to select target.
Then you'll be prompted to select attack.
Then you'll be prompted to provide handshake.
If you don't have a handshake captured already, the script will help you capture one. It will send deauth packets to achieve that.
After that, I quit the procedure (I was using the script in my college hostel and didn't want to cause any troubles to other students).

If you are with me so far, then you can either just close this website, and try to use the tool on your own (it look intuitive enough to me), or you can read through the test run that I'm going to be doing now.

Getting my wireless network's password by fooling my smartphone into connecting to a fake AP

So, in this example run, I will try to find out the password of my wireless network by making my smartphone connect to a fake AP, and then type out the password in the smartphone, and then see if my Fluxion instance on my Kali machine (laptop) gets the password. Also, for the handshake, I will de-authenticate the same smartphone.

PS: You can probably follow this guide without having any clue how WPA works, what handshake is, what is actually going on, etc., but I suggest you do read up about these things. Here are a few links to other tutorials on this website itself that would prove useful (the first two are theoretical, yet nice, the third one is a pretty fun attack, which I suggest you try out, now or later):

This is the theoretical stuff. Experience with tools like aircrack-ng, etc. would also be useful. Take a look at the navigation bar at the top and look at the various tutorials under the "Wireless Hacking" category.

Anyways, with the recommended reading material covered, you can comfortably move on to the actual hacking now:

The real stuff begins!

This section is going to be a set of pictures with captions below them explaining stuff. It should be easy to follow I hope.

Select language

After selecting language, this step shows up.
Note how I am not using any external wireless card, but my laptop's internal card.
However, some internal cards may cause problems, so it's better to use an
external card (and if you are on a virtual machine you will have to use an external card).

The scanning process starts, using airodump-ng.

You get to choose a target. I'm going after network number 21, the one my smartphone
is connected to.

You choose an attack. I am going to choose the Hostapd (first one) attack.

If you had already captured a 4-way handshake, then you can specify the location
to that handshake and the script will use it. Otherwise, it will capture a handshake
in the next step for you. (A tutorial on capturing the handshake separately)

If you didn't capture a handshake beforehand, then you get to choose which
tool to use to do that. I'm go with aircrack-ng.

Once you have a handshake captured (see the WPA Handshake: [MAC Address] on top, if it's
there, then you have the handhake), then type 1 and enter to check the handshake. If everything's fine,
you'll go to the next step.

Use the Web Interface method. I didn't try the bruteforce thing, but I guess it's just
the usual bruteforce attack that most tools use (and thus no use to us, since that's
not what we are using this script for).

This offers a variety of login pages that you can use to get (phish) the
WPA network's password. I went with the first choice.

After making your decision, you'll see multiple windows. DHCP and DNS requests are being handled in
left two windows, while the right two are status reporting window and deauth window (to get users
off the actual AP and lure them to our fake AP)

In my smartphone, I see two network of the same name. Note that while the original network is WPA-2
protected, the fake AP we have created is an open network (which is a huge giveaway stopping most people
from making the mistake of connecting to it). Anyways, I connected to the fake AP, and the DNS and DHCP windows
(left ones), reacted accordingly.

After connecting to the network, I got a notification saying that I need to login to the wireless network.
On clicking that, I found this page. For some people, you'll have to open your browser and try to open a website (say facebook.com) to get this page to show up. After I entered the password, and pressed submit, the script ran the
password against the handshake we had captured earlier to verify if it is indeed correct. Note how the
handshake is a luxury, not a necessity in this method. It just ensures that we can verify if the password
submitted by the fake AP client is correct or not. If we don't have the handshake, then we lose this ability,
but assuming the client will type the correct password, we can still make the attack work.

Aircrack-ng tried the password again the handshake, and as expected, it worked.
We successfully obtained the password to a WPA-2 protected network in a matter of minutes.

The move from 3G to 4G networks a few years ago—particularly of the LTE variety—has also taken its toll.

But there's much more to poor battery life results than that. Fortunately, there's plenty you can do to stem the flow of juice from your Android device.

Pixel Filter

Unused apps are definitely resource hogs, so just get rid of them! You can do this by using the app manager in your settings, or by long-pressing apps in your drawer and dragging them to the “Uninstall” section.

Clear the cache data

Don’t know what cached data is? Well, it’s a good thing to have it, as it actually speeds up your device. By saving some data locally, the system can reduce loading times and avoid the need to grab the same bits from the Internet every single time you enter a website or app.

The issue is that cache can build up and become pretty heavy on your smartphone’s internal storage. Try to clear it from time to time, as it can also get old. 1. The EHang 184 is a human-sized drone built by the Chinese UAV company EHang. It is an autonomous drone that will be able to carry a single passenger for 23 minutes at a speed of 60 MPH. The 184 also has gull-wing doors and arms that fold up.

2. Lenovo announced that the company would be producing the first Google Project Tango phone. The conference was short on details, but we know is that Lenovo is going to release a phone that is going to cost less than $500 this summer. The company doesn’t have a final design just yet, but pictured above is a glimpse one of the 5 designs.

3. Garmin’s Varia Vision is an augmented reality display that you mount to your sunglasses. And it’s not just about displaying how well you’re doing, it can alert you about traffic and directions. The$400 device could be a dream come true for cyclists when it comes out in Q1 2016.

4. Parrot unveiled the 700-gram Parrot Disco drone, and we went hands-on. It can fly up to 45 minutes and reach speeds of just under 50 mph. The 1080p 14-megapixel camera at the front of the drone is the same one that Parrot used for its Bebop 2 quadcopter.

5. The Daqri smart helmet is an industrial device that projects important information in front of the eyes of the wearer. It doubles as a hard hat and safety goggles making it ideal for anyone working with heavy machinery or in technical fields.

6. The Nima from 6 Sensor Labs is a$249 gadget that can test food for gluten in under 2 minutes with antibody-based test and disposable pods. Something like this could change the lives of those with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. 6 Sensor Labs took home the $50,000 Hardware Battlefield grand prize.

The Barbarian is the first unit you get access to in Clash of Clans. This unit is a cheap melee unit that does well as the base of your army for the first five Town Hall levels. A good strategy is to use only Barbarians and overwhelm the opponent with a Barbarian swarm. Since Barbarians are so cheap and train so quickly, you can easily go on 5-6 raids per hour when using a Barbarian army.

At higher levels, Barbarians still can be used as damage shields for more fragile units, but mass-Barbarian armies do not work nearly as well as they do at early levels. You will need something to break down walls and shoot at high-threat targets like Wizard Towers and Mortar that are behind walls.

Archer

The Archer is the basic ranged unit in the game. It does solid damage, but has very, very low health. However, its low health is more than made up for by its low cost and quick movement speed. The Archer’s range allows it to shoot over walls and hit defensive towers and resource storage buildings even with the walls around these structures are intact.

Players are best served by using a line of Barbarians (initially) and later Giants to tank for their Archers. These higher health troops will absorb tower hits so that Archers can stay alive longer. The Archer’s biggest weakness is clumping up with other Archers and having them all get hit by Mortars or Wizard Towers. Keep them spread out and do not drop them all in the same place to minimize this effect.

Archers also do very well in the Clan Castle when the Clan Castle is placed in the center of a base layout. Archers in this position will shoot over walls at melee units that will not be able to fight back until the melee units break through the wall.

Goblin

Goblins are cheap, fast units that will focus entirely on collecting resources. Goblins will not attack anything other than resource collectors and storage units until every resource collector and storage building have been destroyed. Goblins also do twice their normal damage to collectors and resource storage structures. Their fast movement speed allows them to frequently avoid traps. Goblins are fast enough to trigger a spring trap without getting launched (as long as they do not stop on top of it).

At low levels, Goblins are not very effective. Their low damage and health does not give them enough survivability to be effective. However, the Goblin unit gets generous damage increases with each level of research, drastically increasing its effectiveness. By level 4, Goblins will easily start tearing through even high-level walls and wiping out storage buildings within a few seconds, making them very effective for farming.

By level 5, 20 Goblins + healing spell + rage spell are practically an unstoppable force, as they will tear through level 8-9 walls in just a few seconds. Great for coring deep into a player’s base to snag a Dark Elixir storage. Just make sure you take out the mines on the outside of the base or Goblins may be reluctant to attack walls.

Giants are the first units that players get access to that will specifically target defensive structures. Giants will not attack any other structures until all defensive towers have been destroyed. Hidden Tesla towers are considered defensive structures for the Giant.

Giants have three weaknesses: Spring Traps, their low damage, and their slow movement speed. Giants are very susceptible to well-placed Spring Traps since players have a good idea of how Giants will move. Be sure to try and trigger obvious Spring Trap locations with Goblins, Archers, or Barbarians before sending your Giants in to attack.

The Giant’s low damage can be best made up for by using Wall Breakers and Archers. Giants normally take forever to destroy high-level walls, so use a Wall Breaker or two to break down the walls and let the Giants in faster. Archers can also shoot and take down towers behind walls, limiting the number of walls that the Giants need to break down. Giants slow speed can be improved immensely via the Rage spell, but the cost of the spell prohibits its regular use.

Wall Breakers are an essential unit for most Clash of Clans armies. These units can very quickly destroy walls that other units would take ages to break down. Breaking down the first line or two of an enemy’s walls can be the difference between clearing the entire base or getting wiped without reaching 50%.

Wall Breakers are very fragile, so you will need to put down a few distracting units like Giants or Barbarians to allow your Wall Breakers to break down walls without getting hit. Be sure to time your Wall Breakers in between Mortar Shots so that they do not get taken out by splash damage.

The Balloon is an interesting air unit that specifically targets defenses first. As an air unit, it is strong versus Mortars and Cannons, but weak versus Air Defense towers. The biggest weaknesses of the Balloon are its very low movement speed, its low HP, and its tendency to clump up with other Balloons. The low movement speed allows Air Defense towers to pick off many Balloons before they ever get in range. Its low HP and tendency to clump make the Balloon susceptible to Wizard Towers and Air Bombs.

The Rage Spell makes the Balloon many times better, as it allows the Balloon to quickly move between targets. A fleet of Balloons under the effects of the Rage Spell will quickly take out all defensive structures within the area of effect of that spell. Balloons also scale very well with research; max level Balloons do quite a bit of damage.

Balloons are an atypical unit, as they do not scale like the normal unit. Balloons are outright terrible outside of the campaign from levels 1-4. At level 5, they become pretty good, as the amount of damage and health they gain with this upgrade is significant.

At level 6, Balloons become an excellent unit and are even one of the strongest mid-tier (not cheap, but not overly expensive) units in the game. The reason is the amount of damage and health they gain from levels 5 to 6 is incredible. A level 6 balloon does twice the damage and has about double the health and well over double the damage of a level 4 balloon. No other unit scales this well and has such a jump at this level range.

You can think of the Wizard like an upgraded Archer. However, the Wizard does not always get used in place of the Archer simply because one Wizard (a 4 supply unit) costs more Elixir than 4 Archers and the Wizard takes significantly longer to train.

Like an Archer, the Wizard should be used with something to tank in front of it, typically Giants or even Barbarians. This ensures that the Wizard does not get taken down by towers and can stay alive long enough to dish out its very high damage. The Wizard has a lot more health than the Archer – making it less vulnerable to the Mortar and Wizard Tower. Wizards are still weak against structures like the Archer Tower or Cannon, particularly if the Wizard is attacking something else while being fired upon by either of these two structures.

The Wizard scales very well with upgrades, getting a large damage increase with every level of research. When fully upgraded, the Wizard is the most powerful DPS unit in the game on the basis of the amount of damage it can deal based on its supply cost. A max-level Wizard does 180 DPS; divided by its 4 supply cost, and that yields 42.5 DPS per housing space – by far the highest of any unit.

Healers will issue steady area of effect healing to a group of nearby units (radius of a few units on the heal), keeping approximate pace with any AoE damage or damage from one single-target defensive tower. Healers tend to work very well when paired with Giants, as Healers can keep the Giants healed while the Giants slowly work down the enemy’s defensive structures.

The Healer’s primary enemies are the Air Defense tower, Seeking Air Mines, and to an extent the Inferno Tower. Air Defense structures will take down Healers in less than 10 seconds, so taking down these structures is a must. A common strategy is to use Wall Breakers and an initial wave of Giants to destroy one air defense tower, then send in the healer. This ensures that the Healer is able to follow the Giants until coming into range of the next Air Defense tower. At higher levels, sometimes a few Hog Riders can be used to take down exposed Air Defense towers in similar fashion.

With Giants and a healer taking out about half of a base’s defensive structures before coming into range of the next Air Defense, Goblins can easily be used to steal much of a base’s resources. If enough structures have been destroyed, it is possible that a follow-up wave of Archers may be able to take down any remaining Air Defense structures. Lightning spells can also be used to take down an Air Defense tower, allowing the Giant and Healer combo to become more effective.

Note: Healers will not target air units.

Dragon

The Dragon is an extremely strong unit in Clash of Clans, dealing high damage to both air and ground units while possessing a massive HP pool. The Dragon also deals splash damage, allowing it to take out Clan Castle troops with ease. Even though the Dragon is technically weak against Air Defense structures, its large HP pool allows it to absorb many hits even from upgraded Air Defense turrets.

A mass Dragon army is actually quite effective. By using Lightning Spells to take down an Air Defense tower, a mass Dragon Army can get a 50% clear on even the best-designed, fully-upgraded base. Dragons are also very effective at clearing many of the single-player campaign missions.

The main problem with Dragons is the cost and time it takes to train them. Each Dragon costs 25,000 Elixir; a 200-supply 10 Dragon army would run 250,000 elixir in total! The cost of the Dragon also increases significantly with level. Level 3 Dragons cost 36,000 elixir, making a 10 Dragon army of this level cost 360,000 elixir.

Dragons are quite useful in Clan Wars, as a Town Hall 7 player can easily 3 star any other Town Hall 7 player by using 3x LIghtning Spell to take out an enemy’s Air Defense and then using Dragons to take out the rest of the base. A Town Hall 8 player can 3 star most Town Hall 8s with 10 level 3 Dragons (along with an 11th Dragon in the Clan Castle). A fully maxed Town Hall 8 with good base design and a loaded Clan Castle will not be 3 starred by level 2 Dragons.

The only turret that is particularly effective against the P.E.K.K.A is the Hidden Tesla, but it still takes a single Hidden Tesla 15-30+ seconds to take out a P.E.K.K.A (depending on upgrade level).

P.E.K.K.A’s may not necessarily be more effective than the Dragon despite the fact that the P.E.K.K.A is a higher level unit. The Dragon has a lower supply cost than the P.E.K.K.A, allowing players to create more dragons than P.E.K.K.As. Dragons can also fly over walls, increasing the Dragon’s tendency to attack defensive structures.

P.E.K.K.As have a habit of attacking the perimeter of an enemy’s base, destroying all the structures typically left outside enemy walls – good for trophies, not always efficient for farming. You may want to clear the perimeter of structures with Archers and use a Wall Breaker to break down the first set of enemy walls in order to steer your P.E.K.K.A towards the center of the enemy’s base.

One great way to use the P.E.K.K.A. is for a strategy known as coring. Coring involves driving a hole straight into an enemy’s base in order to target their central storage (typically the Dark Elixir storage). High level players with strong base designs usually put their Clan Castle at the center of the base (at TH8 and beyond). P.E.K.K.A.s are drawn towards Clan Castle units, so if you drop your P.E.K.K.A.s with a rage spell when the enemy’s clan castle units pop, the P.E.K.K.A.s will tear through the walls of the enemy base (i.e. coring), allowing your other units easy access to an otherwise well-protected Dark Elixir storage.

Dark Barracks Units

The following 5 units are produced from the Dark Barracks and all require Dark Elixir for both production and their research upgrades. The Dark Barracks is available at level 7.

Minion

The Minion is a light flying unit and the first available out of the Dark Barracks. It is not particularly strong, but it is very mobile since it is an extremely fast flying unit. Its fast training speed and low cost make it quite popular as it allows the Dark Barracks to contribute production power to farming runs. Minions are quite popular for farming trophies as they can be deployed to attack buildings only defended by Cannons or Mortars.

Despite being a flying unit, the Minion is actually decent against Air Defense towers since the Air Defense tower can only attack one target at a time. Minions tend to clump up, making them particularly weak versus Wizard Towers and Air Bombs.

One of the best uses of the Minion is to kill the Barbarian King. You can lure the Barbarian King away from defensive structures and then drop a handful of Minions on it to take down the Barbarian King with minimal losses.

At Town Hall 9, Minions also pair well with max level Balloons. Balloons take out enemy air defenses, whereas the Minions come in and provide DPS after the Balloons have killed most of the towers.

Hog Rider

The Hog Rider is a specialty unit that is capable of jumping over walls. It also possesses high DPS and targets defensive structures first. Due to their ability to jump over walls, they can be used to quickly take out defensive structures. Unless you are making an army of mass Hog Riders, it is likely best to use Wall Breakers and standard units to take out the towers on the perimeter of the enemy’s base before using Hog Riders to take down interior towers.

An army of maxed-out Hog Riders along with a few spells (i.e. the Rage Spell and Heal Spell) can quickly destroy even fully maxed out bases. As a result, Hog Riders recently had their unit cost increased by 30%, as they were deemed to be a bit too effective when used in large quantities. While still effective when used in large number, the cost is not efficient for farming – a fully-maxed Hog Rider army costs over 3,000 Dark Elixir.

With that said, people still use 20+ Hog Rider armies to routinely wipe TH8 and TH9 players during Clan Wars. While the players spend more Dark Elixir than they earn, it may be worth it to guarantee the 3 star and propel your clan to victory.

Valkyrie

Targets: Ground (melee splash damage)
Preferred Target: Any
Dark Barracks Required: Level 3

The Valkyrie is a high-powered Barbarian-like unit that deals significantly more damage and possesses significantly more health. However, due to its supply cost, the Valkyrie actually does less damage per second per housing supply cost than the Barbarian. The Valkyrie does have more health than a Barbarian on a supply basis, making it much more survivable.

The Valkyrie’s high health makes it much more durable than a Barbarian, allowing it to soak up a large amount of damage and rendering Mortar and Wizard Towers ineffective in the process. Their splash damage also makes them great at taking out Clan Castle reinforcements (assuming they are ground units).

The biggest obstruction to using the Valkyrie is that it costs a significant amount of Dark Elixir (160 per Valkyrie at max level) and takes a long time to train (15 minutes for an 8 supply unit). The Valkyrie’s health was recently increased to promote its use, but I am not sure if it is enough. The cost for a maxed-out Valkyrie is just too high and its target choice (Any) too poor to use regularly. Maybe a single Valkyrie or two could be included for Clan Castle reinforcements and to take out regular structures, but I would rather conserve my Dark Elixir and use a P.E.K.K.A. instead for similar effect.

Golem

Dark Barracks Required: Level 4

You can think of the Golem like a hero Giant. It is the only high health, high supply unit in-game that specifically targets defenses. It has an enormous HP pool that tops out at 6,300 health at max level.

Upon death, the Golem deals massive splash damage (550 at max level) and splits into two Golemites, each unit possessing 1/5 the health of the Golem. Given that the Golem at max level has 6,300 health, this leaves its Golemites with 1260 health – quite beefy in their own right. Golemites also do modest splash damage upon death.

The Golem’s downside is that it does very little damage on a per-supply basis. The Golem barely hits harder than a Giant, despite the fact that Giants do not do much damage and only cost 5 supplies to the Golem’s housing cost of 30.

The Golem is considered by many to be the best unit for use within the Clan Castle. It has so much health that it can distract enemy troops for ages while your towers do damage. Also, its splash damage upon death makes it difficult to take out, not to mention the Golemites that spawn once the original Golem goes down. Note that Golems in the Clan Castle only really works for TH9 and TH10 players, as at lower TH levels, it is easy to lure out Clan Castle troops without committing with an army.

Golems are expensive and take up a lot of supplies; it is typical for high-level players to just use a single Golem and support it with ranged DPS units such as Archers, Witches, or Wizards (depending upon trophy range).

Witch

Movement Speed: 12
Targets: Ground & Air
Preferred Target: Any
Dark Barracks Required: Level 5

The Witch is the highest-level Dark Barracks troop (and for good reason). An army of well-used Witches can take out a maxed out TH10 base. Witches themselves are not very strong units, but the wave after wave of summoned Skeletons they bring to the battlefield can eventually wear an opponent out. Witches are able to summon a new set of Skeletons every six seconds (with a max of 6 at level 1 and 8 at level 2).

The Witch itself has extremely low health, so it needs to be positioned well. It is very vulnerable to the Mortar, as Skeletons may get in the Mortar’s minimum range and force the Mortar to fire at the Witch. It is important to find ways to take out the Mortar when using Witches. Use distracting units or Hog Riders to focus down any exposed Mortars. Lightning Spells can be used to take out central Mortars.

With no Mortars left, the Float spell can be used on Skeletons to send a steady stream of free units over walls and into the enemy’s base. When the units are free and never-ending, even the best-designed base does not stand a chance.

Lava Hound

Targets: Ground & Air
Preferred Target: Air Defense Towers
Dark Barracks Required: Level 6

The Lava Hound functions like a flying Golem. The Lava Hound does very little damage, but has a very large health pool and specifically seeks out enemy Air Defense towers. While the low damage dealt by this unit is not likely to result in any tower kills, its high health pool can distract enemy tower fire long enough to allow other air units to take out the distracted towers.

The Lava Hound alone does not make an army, but it is an effective unit when backed up by Minions, Balloons, or Dragons.

The differences between these two operating systems goes well beyond the bits and bytes of it all, Android and Apple have both cultivated strong followers, please note that I said “Apple” on purpose, as “iOS” is not the term used with passion quite as much. This speaks to a larger difference in these two ecosystems, where Android users are loyal to the operating system, but iOS users are loyal to the company behind the OS, we’ll explain more in a bit.

These fans are people that are willing to camp out for days to get the next device, people that are willing to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to enjoy the latest and greatest phones and tablets with each OS. Unfortunately, this also means that there are users on both sides that are quick to belittle the other. We are glad to see a greatly reduced frequency of such outbursts, but there was a time that you could often find crude and indecent conversations between the fans of each OS.

The general dispute in days past is exactly what makes these two operating systems stand out from one another. On one hand, Android is a highly customizable system, with roots in Linux and code that can be found in the Open Source space for all to take and expand upon. On the flip side, iOS is a closed operating system. Without taking extreme actions, the average user will never know what tweaking the OS or alternate versions of the OS would look like.

Bringing it back to the core of the user experience, Android is an excellent OS for those that like to get down and dirty with their devices, where iOS is made for simplicity, turn on any Apple mobile device and enjoy the exact same experience.
