Samsung strikes back at Apple with 10 patent infringement claims via engadget. Breaking News:Samsung strikes back at Apple with 10 patent infringement claims This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone: in the latest chapter of the Apple-Samsung dispute over their smartphones' resemblance, the latter company has just retaliated by filing lawsuits against Apple in three countries. Sammy's load of ammo includes five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, though we've yet to hear more details about these claims. Now we just sit back and enjoy the show -- popcorn, anyone?

Update: Reuters has shed some light on the actual patents Samsung is alleging are being infringed. The news organization reports they relate to "power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission, and wireless data communication technology." Samsung Infuse 4G will sell $178.88 at Walmart

Samsung Infuse 4G will sell $178.88 at Walmart We had heard just over a month ago about the Samsung Infuse 4G getting some FCC love for AT&T launch, and this Walmart flyer basically confirms it. Even better yet, Walmart will be letting this go for $178.88. You gotta love Walmart’s weird pricing rollback prices. To add the kicker, the Samsung Infuse 4G will be available sometime in May. The Samsung Infuse 4G is no laughing matter of a device, as it’ll boast a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.2GHz processor, putting this device right up there with the HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Atrix and Samsung Droid Charge. I wrote a post earlier in the week about the need for tablets. I admitted that I would end up buying one because I am a gadget freak, not because I need one. If I do buy one, this is the one I will buy. It is the most intriguing Android tablet by far. The only thing that concerns me about the Asus is that it may not get updates timely. Motorola Droid Bionic will launch with Verizon Wireless this summer

2011-04-20T02:31:00.000-07:00

Motorola Droid Bionic will launch with Verizon Wireless this summer

Motorola Droid Bionic will launch with Verizon Wireless this summer We have been reporting that the Droid Bionic might be scrapped and the Targa will be replacing it. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Bionic was originally scheduled to launch in the second quarter, but Motorola pushed back the launch to add new features to the phone. An unnamed spokeswoman from Motorola was quoted as saying: “Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience.” The show she is referring to is the Consumer Electronics Show from this past January. It sounds as if the rumors we have been reporting are true if you read between the lines. In my opinion, “incorporating several enhancements” means they are changing phones. The one thing we learned from this interview is that they still plan on calling this future device the Droid Bionic. It is highly unlikely it will be the same phone shown in January, and will most likely resemble the Targa. [via wsj]

HTC EVO 4G Review Long anticipated, hugely specified and just plain huge: there’s a lot to like about the HTC EVO 4G. The first WiMAX phone in the US brings with it the promise of DSL-like mobile data access along with the flexibility of Google’s Android OS, complete with HTC’s now-legendary hardware quality and flexible Sense UI. On the flip side it’s nowhere near cheap and WiMAX coverage is marginal. Is this new superphone faster than a speeding bullet,

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.Rocking Honeycomb watch (Video)

2011-04-19T00:38:00.000-07:00

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.Rocking Honeycomb watch (Video) Thanks to a tipster, the guys over at AC caught wind of a Vietnamese video of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 being displayed and compared to the iPad 2. This is great considering Samsung has kept the revamped tab under lock and key for a while. Well, they’ve finally released the reigns and loosened their ties, allowing us to get this bad boy in action. The video shows the tab sporting Honeycomb (3.0) and we must say, it looks great. The redesigned device appears to be even slimmer than we thought and looks great in the hand. So, enjoy the video folks, and sorry, but until Google works on a translation app for audio, the entire video is in Vietnamese. For a more thorough look at the device’s features and capabilities, check out our old post where Samsung released a demo commercial of the device. That post is based off of old hardware, however, the software is the same. As always, leave us your thoughts in the comments below.

Android Tablet OGT Tablet Will Be World’s Thinnest

2011-04-18T12:18:00.000-07:00

Android Tablet OGT Tablet Will Be World’s Thinnest

OGT Mobile is bringing a tablet to market in the near future, and it’s being trumpeted as the world’s thinnest Android tablet yet. Details are scarce at their website, but our friends at Android Central got some up-close time (video below) and are sharing some specifics. Weighing in at 7mm thin and a very petite 550 grams (1.2 pounds), it certainly wears “thin” well. From the sounds of it, though, OGT didn’t skimp on the hardware just to earn the title of “World’s Thinnest,” as it’s still showing up with a 1GHz CPU (no specifics yet on the model), a 5MP camera as well as a 3MP front-facing cam, and a promising display showing up at 188 pixels per inch — literally the best we’ve ever seen on a tablet. Add in 2 flavors — 16GB or 32 — and a microSD card, as well as the promise that there will be both 3G and wifi-only versions, and this tablet definitely has the potential to make a splash, especially if they can price it competitively with the iPad and get it some attention in the marketing world. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one, that’s for sure. YouTube Preview Image

Samsung bringing exynos 2GHz dual-core processors in 2012

Samsung bringing exynos 2GHz dual-core processors in 2012

We thought 2011 was going to be an awesome year for smartphones and tablets, but after hearing this news, it looks like 2012 can’t get here fast enough. Samsung is going to be launching 2GHz dual-core Exynos processors for smartphones next year, making their devices with these powerhouse processors just as fast as most PC sold in stores today. This news was leaked by a “high-ranking” Samsung executive here. Also, Samsung may be pulling a NVIDIA, and selling the 2GHz Exynos dual-cores to any manufacturer that wants them in their hardware too. Smart move. [via samsung hub]

Are we tablet crazy? Do we really need one?WHY?

2011-04-18T12:08:00.000-07:00

Are we tablet crazy? Do we really need one?WHY?

Well Last year Apple launched the IPad, and it was more successful than anyone thought. This year will be the tablet explosion as Apple’s IPad 2, and plenty of Android versions, will be available. I think the ultimate thought is that tablets will eventually take over laptops, but since this has not happened, why should I invest in one? It seems as though the tablet has become the new $500 “coffee table book.” Recently, AdMob did a survey on tablet use, and they found that 82% of tablet owners use it only at home. The tablet has become the new casual computer at home for doing some web surfing, reading the news, or playing some games. My laptop can do all of these things and a lot more. I also understand that a laptop is a little bulky and sometimes you want to do some casual Google searches, tweeting, and facebooking while sitting on the couch, but what is wrong with my Droid X? The only advantage a tablet has over my phone is size. There is no question that 10 inches would be better than 4.3 inches, and yes we are still on the subject of tablets. Is an extra 6 inches worth $500+ for casual internet experiences? Some people will attempt to argue that Honeycomb is an added user experience that you cannot get on your phone. This is true, but only temporarily because we all know Google is going to merge the phone and tablet software. I am perfectly fine pulling out my Droid X to read news, tweet, conduct searches, or check the weather. If I need to do something more sophisticated I can grab my laptop. If I could replace my laptop then maybe I could justify a tablet, but I can’t, and 75% of tablet owners agree with me. According to a survey conducted by Sybase this past September, 75% of tablet owners do not feel their tablet is a laptop replacement. Apparently they are willing to pay $500+ for a device that they feel does not replace their laptop, but at the same time desperately need 6 extra inches for their casual internet experiences. These people see no problem using their phone away from home for their casual internet experiences, but when they are home they feel the need for a bigger screen. If you are in the 25%, then by all means, get rid of your laptop and enjoy your tablet. I am not. To me, the best reason to buy a tablet would be because it is more suited for reading books than a smartphone or laptop. If it is books that you are interested in, wouldn’t it make more sense to buy a Nook or Kindle for 1/3 of the price? The concept of the tablet came from digital books. Lets go back to the late 90’s when the Personal Data Assistants (PDA) grew. Eventually the PDA merged with the phone to make it convenient so you did not have to carry two items. Then the smartphone evolved to add in a camera and camcorder so you did not have to carry those items. Now all of a sudden, I am being told I need to buy a phone and a tablet which are in a sense the same thing except for size. Do I need to carry both devices? Going back to the AdMob survey, the answer is no, since most people leave their tablet in the house. This brings me back to the tablet being the new $500 “coffee table book.” Well, at least for 75% of the owners. Did the smartphone replace the camera or camcorder? The answer is yes for a lot of users, but not for someone who needs more. A standalone camera or camcorder gives you better quality if you feel you need it. I own a separate camera and camcorder because I have a 2 year old son and I want the best quality pictures and video I can get. If you spend $500+ for a camcorder or digital camera you get a huge leap in quality and usability over what you get with a smartphone. The same holds for a laptop, if I spend $500+ on a laptop, I get the same upgrade in quality and performance. If I buy a tablet for $500+ am I getting the same upgrade in quality over my smartphone for casual internet needs? So for 2011 we have tablets, smartphones, and laptops. The laptop and smartphone were already around for years. The tablet has crashed the party. Can it continue to grow as the third wheel? Something has to give. It is either going to replace the laptop or somehow the tablet and smartphone will merge much like the PDA, camera, and camcorder merged with the smartphone. I think the Kyocera Echo and Motorola Atrix could represent where we are heading in the future. The Echo is considered a joke by many, and I would agree, but couldn’t this type of hardware evolve? It is possible that in the future a device could be made that is similar, but have a much better design where you would not see the split between the 2 screens. I have always said that if I could buy a 10-inch phone that would fit in my pocket, I would buy it in a heartbeat. My Droid X is 4.3 inches. If that doubled with a second slide out screen that would be a total of 8.6 inches. That is doable and when I feel like having a bigger screen I could do so easily and yet fit in my pocket. How about the Atrix? I think it represents a more likely future in that the smartphone is getting more powerful and eventually it will be as powerful as today’s computer. I think eventually we could be docking our phones into tablets. If I could plug my phone into a 10-inch dummy tablet that would make sense. Of course that dummy tablet has to be priced reasonably. The Atrix laptop dock is way too expensive, but I believe the prices will drop considerably over the next few years. With this scenario I could have a dummy 10-inch screen sitting on my coffee table that maybe costs $200, and when I come home from work, I can dock my phone to the larger screen and enjoy my casual internet experiences. I could maybe justify spending $200 for the 6 extra inches. This may seem crazy to some of you, but 10 years ago did you expect the smartphone to evolve to what it is today? Quad core processors will be out by next year. What do we need quad core processors for? These processors will enable the smartphone to be the central powerhouse for all of our computing needs and they will be available for both phones and tablets, so for the foreseeable future, tablets will continue to have screen size as its only edge. I am not trying to say that tablets should go away. The funny thing is that I will end up buying a tablet, but not because I need one. It is because I am a gadget freak. I am just not feeling the “techie high” that you get when you run out to buy something new in technology. It is hard to get excited about a third wheel, but as things change, I am sure I will be more excited about it. For now, I am happy with my laptop and smartphone.

MyTouch 4G May Be Getting Android 2.3 Soon

MyTouch 4G Wondering if his beloved MyTouch 4G would ever get an upgrade to Android 2.3, a reader of TmoNews‘ contacted HTC to pull the answer from deep within. The representative he spoke with initially confirmed that the device would be getting Gingerbread in Q2, but that wasn’t good enough for him – he demanded reassurance. After asking the rep to confirm this is true, they responded back saying it came straight from HTC’s Taiwanese headquarters. Sounds pretty good to me, but you know the routine – we’ll believe it when we see it.via-source..

Toshiba Tablets Priced at 8GB,16GB,32GB Three Levels.

2011-04-17T22:08:00.000-07:00

Toshiba Tablets Priced at 8GB,16GB,32GB Three Levels.

Looks like Toshiba’s gearing up to launch their Android tablet as Newegg has outed prices for three different configurations – 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB offerings. Those come out to be $450, $500 and $580, respectively. And the model numbers of these devices suggest Toshiba could have settled on a name – ANT – but we can’t say for sure. (In fact, it wouldn’t be implausible for Toshiba to just go without conventional naming practices and stick with using a model number to identify it.) These things aren’t shipping yet but we hope that’ll change sooner rather than later. [via Laptoping]

Hopefully we can see these color options make their way over seas for the Xperia Arc as well since we know the Xperia Play comes in 2 flavors already (white or black). The leaked images for the Acro below are in Japanese, so either you can read the language, or you can simply let the images do the talking for you on what’s in store with the Xperia Acro.
