On Thursday I covered the ARISE Fashion Show (New York Fashion Week) for www.societyhae.com.
Great event...all I could think while watching the show was, I want that outfit...and that one..oohh and that one too. The gift bags were pretty cool. Inside was a copy of ARISE Magazine along with a hot oil treatment from Mizani, a Radiance Revealing Peel-Off Mask by Decleor Paris for the the face (made with essential oils and fruit extracts :-) ), a cool tote bag (good for my shopping at the Park Slope Food Coop), and some gourmet candy treats (yummy).

After the show I hung out a bit with some cool Nigerians - Ngozi Odita (Society Hae), Ogugua (Promotions of all things African (Fela On Broadway etc etc), DBanj (Nigerian hip-hop artist just signed to Kanye West's Good Music), and Sound Sultan in town doing some work with Wyclef and others.
Sound Sultan (hip hop aritst) & Lilian (Major Nigerian Stylist)
I slept for about 5 of the 7.5 hours that we've been on the road. We are still in Italy -- such a beautiful green landscape. Everyone on the bus is just doing there own thing, I'm downloading footage and listening to DBanj play in the background. Seun just gave a live performance of Boys II Men, "I'll Make Love to You" and "End of the Road." Who knows when the next 15 min rest stop will be. I haven't really eaten a good meal yet, just a little here and there. I'm so afraid that I won't be able to eat anything in Germany --hopefully I can find some good veggies... LOL!

Sent from my BlackBerry wireless handheld.
-delphinefb<img width='1' height='1' My eyes have just witnessed the most beautiful mountain sides, the kinds that you only see in paintings. I am here laying on a top bunker on the second deck of a double decker tour bus. As I awoke to those amazingly gorgeous mountains, I reveled in thought: how much of a reality are these existences in my world if I never see them with my own eyes. Seeing the world through someone else's perspective is just that, one point of view. In my own being, I travel to experience new people, places and thing with all of my senses.
Yesterday, I arrived safely in Paris at approximately 10am. I landed with a spirit of gratefulness for a safe journey. My flight was delayed due to engine problems. Although, I love to travel, and I'm not really freaked out by flying, there is always that small window of vulnerability knowing that you are suspended thousands of feet in the air and you safety are in the hands of a pilot that you don't even know.
I was a little anxious upon my arrival. This is the first time that I have traveled to a foreign country alone. Usually, I am on vacation with family or working. This time I was meeting up with Seun Kuti + Egypt 80's European tour. The only thing is that I arrived before they did. Luckily I was able to link up with my Parisian friend Malika who gave me directions to meet her at a train stop near the Eiffel Tower. So there I was, with my heavy nap sack filled with camera equipment, and my suitcase taking the cost effective way into paris from the airport, RER, Paris by train. I must say that I was quite surprised at how filthy the train was from the airport to Chet____. It was quite adventurous navigating the train system as I had to take 3 trains and ask for directions with the very, very little french that I know. For some reason spanish words came to mind. Many say that the french will not be pleased if you don't at least attempt to speak it when you are foreign to their country. I didn't want to come from the pompous American attitude that everyone around the world is expected to speak English - so I tried to speak the little french that I know. I found that some people did understand and speak English and the kindly helped me with directions. I also sensed an appreciation at my attempts to speak their language.
After, traveling on trains empty and crowded with what appeared to be a very diverse group of city travelers I found my self astonished by the beauty of Paris. I walked out of the train station at--- and sighed graciously. To the left of me I saw small cars driving towards me with the buildings textured like a work of art in the back drop. To the right of me my eyes rested peacefully on the Eiffel Tower as it was surrounded by greenery from my point of view. Shortly after Malika met me and we traveled to the Hippodrome de Longchamp. Seun was scheduled to open on one of several stages set up for Paris' hugest festival, Solidays: Festival of Love. Seun's performance would take place on the main stage in about 4 hours after my arrival.
It was nice to reunite with the band. I first met them in Lagos last summer. I completely fell in love with them as I visited a rehearsal at Kalakuta. The music coming out of those instruments instantly reminded me that those rhythmic vibrations were indeed spiritual. The overwhelming feeling of those rhythms vibrating throughout my body along with the strong sense of passion resonated in the fingers as they stroke their instruments, was simply inspiring.
I was able to revisit that same feeling at sound check. The fact that this band is comprised musicians who take their craft very serious is without question.
Interestingly enough I asked some of the audience members if they were familiar with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, many people were not. These people were there to see the headliner, a totally different kind of group. However, when Seun and his band performed there were seas of dancing bodies moving with the rhythms. The audience loved the performance. After the show I interviewed some of the same audience members and they were blown away.
It was quite amazing to see so many people moved by music that they've never heard in their life and possibly didn't really understand the words. Occasionally, Seun gave meaning to his chorus and invited the audience to sing along. This was a true testament to the notion that music is indeed a universal language. Even if you cannot understand the words - you can surely feel the vibrations...
My mind cannot even imagine what Italy will be like...

Next Saturday is the 3rd Annual Roots Family Picnic in Philly! This all-star Vampire Weekend will feature The Legendary Roots Crew along with hip-hop greats Method Man, Ghostface & Raekwon as well as Africa's best Baja + The Dry Eye Crew from Sierra Leone, West Africa and Nneka from Nigeria.
Baja + The Dry Eye Crew are giving away tickets:
We thought it would be nice to share the love with our friends, so we went ahead and got two extra tickets for the Roots Picnic on June 5 in Philadelphia, where Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew will be playing alongside The Roots, Nneka, The Very Best, Vampire Weekend, Method Man, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and a whole lot more.
All you have to do is upload a photo of yourself doing the legendary Dry Eye sign to our facebook page (www.facebook.com/planetbajah) or tweet it at us (@planetbajah, #dryeye), and a mysterious panel will be pick the best one.

We even got Snoop Dog, Damian Marley, Jeffrey Wright, Dame Dash, Hugh Jackman, and a whole slew of others to show you how.
Anyway, we hope to see you there!

Though he has gained renown for his funky, soulful and jazzy compositions, Roy Ayers’ signature sound is the vibraphone, incorporated into virtually all elements of his music. With hits such as ‘Brother Green’ and ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’, Ayers set the stage for modern R&B artists over the course of his forty plus year career with his innovative use of synthesizers and modern production techniques. Widely considered to be one of the most sampled artists of all time, Ayers’ music continues to engage and inspire audiences of all ages.
Talent can be defined in a myriad of ways. It can be an innate gift or a learned proficiency, but occasionally it’s a potent mixture of both. This is definitely the case with DJ Jon Quick aka the Turntable Superhero. With active residencies at The Cabanas (Maritime Hotel) on Tuesdays, Moca on Wednesdays, Taj Afterwork on Thursdays and The Vault on Saturdays, he is one of NYC’s most notable DJs. His mixes have been featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, Kiss FM and Music Choice. He has also done underground remixes for the rapper K-OS and Bad Boy vocalist, Cheri Dennis. Named one of the 2009 NYC most influential tastemaker/DJ by Kinetix Marketing and for Hennessy Black, the newest brand from by Hennessy, DJ Jon Quick was just featured on NYC’s Fox-5 TV’s Good Day New York and is arguably one of the fastest rising DJ’s created a blueprint for others to follow.

MORE
Share This

SummerStage Music
Doug E.
Part of the NYC Revolutions series
Akim Funk Buddha creates borderless performance art, fusing sounds and movements. An avid world traveler and self-described old-school B-boy MC, he is known for his holistic approach to hip-hop, drawing from a full spectrum of cultural traditions and artistic disciplines. The Flying Boom Box is a story about a young hip-hop artist who by chance discovers that by manipulating the electric-magnetic field of sound waves from his tape deck, he can navigate himself to various countries and time periods. The program features 10 musicians and styles of dance ranging from South African gum boot, Japanese and Balinese traditional to the urban styles of break dancing, body popping, vogue and the hottest new re-emerging dance called “Waaking” (think the ’70s as seen on Soul Train).
Organic Magnetics is a theater arts laboratory that binds creativity and sustainability, inspiring collaboration across cultures and art forms. Director Maija Garcia fuses a contemporary style inspired by Afro-Latin rhythms, with yoga, martial arts and theater dynamics. The company integrates movement, sound, visual art and design to produce site-specific performances, installations and workshops. Organic Magnetics transforms the creative process into urban folklore for the future. The company will perform YaYa Dreams, A Future, a kaleidoscopic experience of the modern world as viewed through the eyes of a child who dares to imagine his future. Through a series of visions and soundscapes, with live music composed and performed by Monk and Hamilton, YaYa forges a way into alternate realms by interacting with the people, places and possibilities that come to life in his dreams.

info@SummerStage.org

(212) 360-2777

MORE
<a addthis:title="Akim Funk Buddha's Flying Boom Box

The Black Rock Coalition, founded in 1985 by Vernon Reid, Greg Tate and Konda Mason, is now launching into its 25th year of being the nation’s only nonprofit organization fully dedicated to finding, creating and cultivating opportunities for alternative musical artists of color. Women's History Month Feature

   By Walter Greene

In honor of Women’s History Month, noted author Deborah Willis teamed up with M. Liz Andrews to curate an exhibit of eight artistic women at the RFA Gallery in Harlem. `Girl Talk: Narratives by Eight Women Artists’ is currently on display at the gallery located at 2075 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd @124th Street in Harlem. Deborah Willis, photographer and author of `Posing Beauty in African American Culture from 1890 to the Present’ is the present Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging Department at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.

"It’s an opportunity to show a range of work of women talking about what’s going on in their lives," said Deborah at the opening of the exhibition. About the name of the exhibit `Girl Talk’ Deborah explained: "I love singer Dakota Staton and I love her song `Girl Talk’ and I wanted to have a range of ideas of what girls are talking about. Her rendition of that song reminds us of the importance of women sharing stories and telling histories. The history of women in this nation is comprised of a multitude of stories, struggles and successes."

`Girl Talk’ is a presentation of photographs, paintings, film, jewelry and quilted pieces exploring the themes of imposed identity, beauty, tradition and self-determination. Deborah was pleased with the outcome of the showcase. "Yea, I am pleased with the outcome. I like the diverse work, the photography, the jewelry aspects that are here within our community. M. Liz Andrews, a performing artist and art administrator who co-curated `Girl Talk’ with Deborah Willis expressed her feelings about the presentation: "I hope to keep the narrative going. I was asked to do this in January, but this idea has always been a thought at the tip of mu tongue. I think it’s a conversation continued. It’s a celebration and an opportunity for reflection about those who give and sustain life with their bodies, spirits and voices. I am pleased and very happy with the show. I love the soundtrack and the representation of the young artists."

The featured artists are: Melvina Lathan, the first female licensed Boxing judge in New York and an artist who uses fiber to create works that range in subjects from portraits, to capturing images of femininity. Her mixed media quilts are on display. Delphine Fawundu-Buford, a photographer, showcased four photos that represented a Nina Simone song titled `Four Women.’ She photographed one woman in four totally different situations. Ifetayo Abdus-Salam another photographer shot a series that reflected the notion of Black Female Power, Sexuality and Identity. Her work included a photograph powdered with tight jeans, big Afro and a machine gun that represented Pam Grier (circa 2005).

Actress Anna Maria Horsford was clearly the most popular artists on display. Her work was attractively unique in a very glamorous way. Anna, who is currently featured in the movie `My Family Wedding’ showcased her jewelry collection on mannequins and on mirrors in a section of the gallery. Her elegant Swarovski crystal and Silver plated necklace adorned a mannequin and her crystal spider design wristclutch entitled `Along Came a Spider’ hung gracefully from a mirror.

Micaela Anaya, a painter influenced by Frida Kahlo and Salvadore Dali did acrylic on canvas in colorful `beauty shots’ that were modern and eye-catching. Her work included `Portrait of a Man’ and `Le Tercera Raiz.’ Carla Williams showed portraits capturing images if femininity and Kathe Sandler, an award winning independent documentary film-maker who explores race, gender, culture, identity and history was also on board. Letitia Huckaby, a photographer and journalist showed quilts of African-America cultural reference.
