Every friday afternoon at Official.fm, we get to work on open source projects and things that interest us. The goal here is to take a mental break from the daily grind and put our skills to new uses. For my most recent project, I decided to make CSS “Flip Cards.” My goal was to create [...]

This article was originally posted on Official.fm’s Backstage Blog A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the WebVisions conference in Barcelona. I decided that for this conference, I would focus primarily on two topics: User Experience and Responsive Design and attend talks tailored toward either of those two topics. Here is a [...]

What do you call someone who designs and builds things for the web? Web designer? Front-end developer? Web designer/developer?

I've been trying to figure this one out for years now and I suspect I'm not the only one. The web has grown and changed so much in the past few years that the lines between traditional roles for web people have been blurred.

A year ago today, I had an interview for a job as a front end developer. At the start of the interview, I was informed that this position required a substantial knowledge of javascript. Sure enough, I was asked to take a test. I was screwed. I was very upfront about my javascript skills and [...]

At work, we have a very basic internal HTML page that we use to list out our staging servers so that developers can see what is currently staged on what server. It looks like this:

How boring.

I quickly found the obviously developer-created stylesheet and began to manipulate it about once a week to spice things up a bit. It didn't take long for the devs to start to notice my "improvements."

Recently, the adjacent selector (+) and I have become the best of friends. When first I learned of the adjacent selector back in the day, I found little use for simply targeting the element next to another element in my markup. However, once I realized that, when used with psudeo-class selectors such as :checked, the adjacent selector can be quite powerful, a whole world of opportunities opened up.

I love icon fonts. Who doesn’t? Nobody. That’s who. They are just super and they pretty much work in every browser (IE has supported @font-face since IE 4! Chew on that for a while.) and I could talk about them for hours, but that’s not why I’m writing this post. I’ve never been to a real web conference, mainly because the opportunity has never really presented itself. Sure, I’ve [...]
