British Heart Foundation Photography Competition

Age Concern Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Pub Quiz at the Wollaton

The quiz was held at the Wollaton Pub and Kitchen in wollaton (weirdly!) and all money raised went to the charity. Around 70 people turned out and including a raffle £250 was raised! An extra £35 was also donated, which gave the charity £285 in total.

We donated our time too and the reseults can be found in the gallery (link on the right)

We found out about this event only the day before it was happening! The photographer lined up to do it had pulled out. When Linda at Unison contacted us about it we said "absolutely yes!" We gathered the equipment together, Cameras, Laptops, Printers, display board, lights and much much more!

It was a red carpet event so we set up a camera right in front of the entrance, all the guests were very well dressed and all were happy to have their pictures taken. From the minute the meal was over guests started to arrive at our position in the atrium of the Gateway Hotel and from that moment we never stopped printing and selling prints, some wanted more shots doing others wanted people removing from the photos of them! ha!

The response from Unison was great. they seemed highly impressed with the set up we had and are looking forward to be able to use us again!
We are looking forward to working with them too!

Think about heart as a theme and what that means to you. Beyond this, the brief is open to your interpretation and we are encouraging creativity.

We will supply 10 disposable cameras (27 exposure 400ASA with Flash.) for you to put on your tables in a variety of colours to suit your style. to match your wedding, party or event. Then, before we leave we will collect them up and process them for you.

We offer this service at a fixed price of £80 all in. (more camera's can be made available at extra cost)

Jason and Zoe came to see us to discuss photographic coverage for their wedding in June next year. They were impressed with what they saw and heard and have confirmed a booking with us! they want us to cover the bride and groom preparations the ceremony, the wedding breakfast and parts of the evening reception, We were chuffed to bits when thry asked us to do it for them!

Ivyrise at Nottingham 2 - the verdict!

We had a great night on thursday, taking the photographs of Ivyrise. I found myself once again tiptoeing around the band on cables I was convinced I was going to trip over!

Sian Alexandra, the girl with the acoustic guitar, did a set before them, so i took some of her, gave my card to her sister Rachael and told her i will send the images on to her if she supplied me her email address.

Ivyrise, Who have changed the line up slightly since i last saw them, new boy being Dan the guitarist, played extremely well as always. They have a rich sound which almost makes them sound recorded on the night! Of course they're not they are just very good at what they do! After the set we did a short photo shoot in a great area at the back of the venue whch had a gazebo covered in lights over it. we took some shots above these lights on a fire escape, i had to scramble under two air conditioning units in the dark to get just the right angle!

The day after the gig they played a set at the BBC building on London Road.

We've Been lucky enough to be asked to do some photography coverage of the band 'Ivyrise' again! The Band will be hosting a gig at the 'Bodega Social Club' in Nottingham and we'll be going along to creat some great images of Ben and the boys!

'Ivyrise' will be playing on Thursday this week....Free passes to another event...here we come!

Below is the editorial written to appear in next weeks edition of the Nottingham Recorder. It has no website of its own but is part of the Nottingham Evening post, (click on the Blog Title to go to their website), where you will also find a small webbanner on their home page, which was offered to me for free - thanks to Shaney at the Post!

A Stapleford photographer has plans to cut the cost of photography for weddings, gigs, events and merchandise work.

“Digital makes photography more accessible rendering some ’film’ processes unnecessary and simplifying techniques, but prices don't seem to have reflected this, I’d like to change that."Andy has been commissioned by comedians at Jongluers and the band IvyRise, who recently supported Bon Jovi.

Work has appeared in the local press and in an exhibition throughout February at Beeston Library, produced good reviews.

Weddings whether intimate or grand, have moments the couple miss, with the rise of documentary style photography the way people view the occasion changes. "Capturing people informally often gets their best side and builds a picture of the day. Alongside the formal photos they really compliment an album.

As well as fantastic A3 books Andy can have your images hand painted on canvas "there are companies who can transfer images to canvas, but I take it further and commission a 'real' painting.

"We chose Andy not only because of his very competitive price but due to the enthusiasm, ideas and professionalism he showed from the first time we contacted him..

Finding a good but reasonable wedding photographer can be a nightmare!

We are all too aware of the pitt falls of finding someone you can trust to give you just what you want!

What with the rise of 'reportage' photography work at weddings which usually means your photographer being around on the day for longer than in previous years you can end up paying through the nose. My service is different you get just what you're looking for but with the added bonus of the word 'reasonable' attached!

i haven't been that active with my camera recently, but i thought i might share two new images. The first is of my gorgeous girlfriend Lisa 'Lastname' Turner. i think the pose and the colouring in this shot harks back to the black and white films of the fifties.
The one below is of me! By Gary Cooke. i was feeling a bit low that day and Gary liked it as he said there looks as if there is more going on behind my eyes. I reckeon he was right!

Gary - PLEASE COMMENT ON CONTENT AND OR QUESTIONS AND I WILL ATTEMPT TO ANSWER THANKS.
All Lenses you place on your camera have the ability to change their aperture size. Or the hole that lets the light in.
The more light allowed in through the lens that is allowed to reach the sensor (the part of the camera that captures the image) then the faster the shutter can operate.

Example 1
If you are hand holding your camera to take shots then you will require a fast shutter speed so as to avoid 'camera shake', (blurring). Often you require a way of being able to produce false light so as to keep the shutter speed fast...yes you guessed it....a Flash! of course a flash can be used to create lots of different effects on an image but for now thats close enough!

Lets look briefly at aperture (the hole in the lens)
when using your camera in the green square Mode (Fully auto) it will control all aspects i.e.:
shutter speed
aperture size
flash control
ISO - i'll explain later!
This is fine but you wont learn much in this mode if you choose it all the time so....
turn the dial anti-clockwise one notch and you are in 'P' mode....dont panic!

in this mode you get to set your own aperture setting and the shutter speed will compensate for you. to change the aperture number use the wheel just behind the shutter button. as you do this looking through the viewfinder you will also notice the number to the left of the aperture number you are changing also changing, this is the shutter speed reference, it is compensating for the amount of available light in the interest of keeping the exposure of the shot correct.
You also get to choose whether you want to use the flash or not.
As far as aperture is concerned, the lower the number, the bigger the hole in the lens.
So...with this in mind, what do we expect the number to be when the hole is small?....yes, correct! larger!! well done Gaz!

Now this is where it could get sticky so just trust me when i say that when the hole is small (large number) the camera can get alot more of the view in focus at once. if the hole is Large (small number) the camera only sees a small amount of the scene in true focus.
The amount of any scene that is in focus on an image is called...'Depth Of Field', or DOF.
Different types of image require different DOF. if you were to be taking a photo of a landscape and you wanted to capture as much detail in focus as you can, from the forground right in to the back, you would choose a small aperture, a larger number, maybe 20 upwards. A tripod will be useful here as the shutter speed would be slower due to the lack of light allowed in to meet the sensor.

or if you were taking a photo of a person, a portrait, you might want to blur out the background especially if the scene behind the person was cluttered or full of colour. In this senario you would choose a small number anything less than 3.5.

Well, it's all over!....after nearly a year of waiting (then one mad rush the night before!) we have completed our first exhibition.

All my work was spray mounted on to black mount card, which seemed fine untill i banged it all up above a radiator and they all gradually started to peel away!
I spent too much time there with a pritt stick!

There were some very positibe comments left in the book, so thank you to all who took the time to view and be interested enough to comment, Dave and I very much appreciate it.
I had no interest sale wise, but Dave (almost) sold one piece...it turned out it was the wrong colour!!!

We are moving some stuff to an art shop window after easter (see link on the right).

To sum up, i was very proud to see my work up on the wall all in one place, i could have easily put more up, but had no room left!
