Transfers

It been a busy, busy summer for the club this summer from the start to the very last minute of the transfer window. Here are my thoughts on the players who have been in and out of the club.

In:

Jordan Henderson : A work in progress. Will have to work hard to show that he's worth every penny we've invested on him. Really nice debut goal though.

Charlie Adam : Won't be Alonso. Let's see if he'll make the starting eleven regularly after Gerrard is fit. Already loving his free kicks.

Stewart Downing : Got to love his pace and crossing skills. Has linked with Suarez really well. Let's see who shines more this season - him or Ashley Young.

Alexander Doni : Alas, I don't see how he's going to get any games unless Reina is injured. Didn't start even in the League Cup.

Jose Enrique : Has really settled well. Nice going forward. Can cross well. It'll be difficult for attackers to get past him.

Sebastian Coates : I haven't seen him play so far, but from the articles I've read about him, it looks like he's a star in the making. For the start he'll provide nice cover for Carragher and injury prone Agger. But I won't be surprised if he cements his place in the starting line-up early.

Craig Bellamy : Let's hope he'll prove better second time around. Won't be nothing for than short-tern cover for the strikers.

Out:

Paul Konchesky : Why did we even bother signing him in the first place? The loss seems even greater if you count two young players that went to Fulham in exchange.

Daniel Ayala : Too bad he couldn't make it to the first team. I had high hope for him. Hope he does well for his new club although I hear he's injured. That's not a good start.

Danny Pacheco (loan) : I still believe in this kid. Should have been given more chances with the first team.

Christian Poulsen : Was never going to replace Mascherano. Better off without him.

Degen : Who???

Alberto Aquilani (loan) : This guy could have been a genius at the club. But with his heart set at returning to Italy, he'd have been a great risk to keep at the club.

Joe Cole (loan) : Biggest disappointment of them all.

Raul Meireles : One guy I didn't want to lose and that too, to Chelsea. He'd have provided great cover for Downing.

David N'Gog : Don't really care because we've got a good replacement in Bellamy but he had improved a lot in the last season.

Emiliano Insua : Not a loss.

Kyrgiakos : Was a good cover. Good in the air. Best of luck, Soto!

Overall:

We've cleared almost all the unwanted players. Brad Jones remains the only signing made by Hodgson to remain at the club. The signing have been good if not great. Only one thing is that after the departure of Cole and Meireles, there's no cover in left midfield. Surely, this means that Gerrard will probably play in that position if needed. The squad looks stronger than I've seen in the past few seasons.

Expectations:

The players will need time to adapt but it's a great start. Now, let's grab that Champions League place.

Seriously, the score didn't surprise me. Without Gerrard and Suarez, I wasn't expecting any fireworks. But, I had hoped for atleast a draw. It seems Gerrard always has to the shepherd of the team- the only one who can inspire the whole team. Torres was never a leader of men. Kuyt is also hardworking, always running and putting in 100% but he is never going to be Gerrard. Carragher's there ofcourse but I wonder what will happen when both Gerrard and Carra retire. Without these two, the team looks lifeless. Suarez, I hope you will fill the void.

Let's hope we will get the job done in the return leg.

Also not surprised that Arsenal lost to Barcelona. I was supporting the Gunners this time since The Reds are not here. But all in vain. They looks like real amateurs when they played against Barcelona. Now, Arsenal shift your focus to the EPL now. I hope you guys win the league this time. I don't want Manchester United breaking our record. You are our only hope now.

What a game! Suarez can play some really great football. Dirk Kuyt should thank him (and Nani) for his hat-trick. And Andy Carroll's debut was really promising. I can imagine defenders pissing in their pants when Carroll and Suarez combine together in the future.

Gerrard could have got a couple of goals for the Reds, Raul should have got one when he was one on one with Van der Sar. We could have been 6-0 up. That would have been some score. Too bad, we conceded a goal in the last minutes. Reina could have done with a clean sheet after that game against West Ham.

I guess it's because on friday, I spent the whole day indoors and chilled all day long. The next day (saturday), I spent the whole day thinking that it was Sunday. I even went to a meeting scheduled for Saturday and my mind kept telling me it was Sunday. I was getting all excited about the Liverpool - Manchester United match. I had even planned my evening around that match.

Then, when the evening came and I went through the match guide, I realised my mistake. Well, I guess that means waiting for another 24 hours (about 13 hours at the time of writing).

Another thing - I came across this piece of article in goal.com where a Manchester United fan wrote that Gerrard was past his best and that he had never performed well against Manchester United. I don't know about the second bit, but sadly it seems he was right about the first part. I sadly have to say that, while Gerrard still have got 4-5 years to go before he retires, his best is in the past now. He is still a magnificient player and a great leader but he can't put in matching winning performances match after match like he used to. I hope I'm proven wrong.

I took a look at the time stamp of my previous post and I realised it's been more than a year since my last post. So many things has happened in football, my life since then. There's no excuse for not writing for more than a year so instead of making excuses, I'll go straight to my thoughts and hope to be regular in the days to come.

So, Liverpool have got new owners, a new manager, new strike force. I was so furious when Torres left the club for Chelsea. I still go mad whenever I see him in blue. But I know Suarez and Carroll will be great for the future. I hope Carroll makes his debut against Manchester United. Itching to watch that game.

And I found out recently that Caroline Wozniacki is a huge Liverpool fan. Well, guess who I'll be supporting in tennis from now on. We, Reds, are going to stick together!

We were without our best players - Torres, Gerrard and Benayoun. But Liverpool have gathered three valuable points against a Tottenham team that have a Champions League ambition of their own. These three points may prove decisive in deciding the fourth place holders. And we are seeing signs of Liverpool improving in the field.

So, are we on the road to recovery? It's still too early to say. Liverpool's got to take one game at a time seeing that we are already out of the cup competitions. When we have all the injured players back, we will be a much better team than that played yesterday. Right now, Rafa's got to concentrate on winning and perhaps buy a good player or two before the transfer ends. I do hope this is not a false dawn. Good luck to Rafa!

Week after week, we are being told that improvement is on the way but we are left high and dry after every match. Now after being dumped out of the FA Cup, what is next for Liverpool?

On top of that, I hear that Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are injured and are doubtful for the next match. When will our misery end? I had been backing Rafael Benitez through it all but maybe it's time to say goodbye to him. Or maybe it's time to show the door to out 'beloved' American owners (although how it is possible I don't know). All I know is that I hate this situation Liverpool is stuck in. And I don't know any thing that will save us this season except for the Europa Cup and I really doubt if we can win it. What do you say?

They had talented young players in the Youth Academy. Young players were given chance to prove their worth in the first team. Success came from the players' heroics on the field but things have changed.

It's not that there are no good young players in the youth teams. We don't see them coming through the ranks because these days managers don't really have time to groom players. They need ready-made players who can play well in today's competitive world. Most of these young players are sent away on loans or sold to lower clubs.

It is not even the fault of the managers. But I do blame the owners of clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City. They can invest hundreds of millions of dollars in their club. They have done a really good job of providing quality players for the club. The Chelsea owner's dedication to his club is club is specially impressive. Chelsea boasts of world stars and they are a team of winners. So, what seems to be the problem?

Well, millions of dollars are being spent to acquire superstars and young talents are left out. In today's football, the spending power of the owners determines who stays in the top four and who are relegated. So should I wish for the next Gerrard to come forward from the youth ranks? Wouldn't it be easier if Bill Gates takes over Liverpool. Wait a minute, Liverpool already have billionaire owners! But they are the worst owners possible. They can't do a proper job and won't even sell the club. Now the club is in debt and the future don't look bright.

The smaller clubs are doing a better job of grooming the players. But then again, when a young player begins to shine they are bought by the richer clubs.

All these things are harming football. I would rather see a decent home-grown player playing for the club than a superstar player who acquisition puts the club in debt. To solve this problem, I think a salary cap and a foreign player quota should be introduced. What say you?

Well at least, they did better than Manchester United who lost to Leeds.
But what this shows is that Liverpool are still not playing well. With the transfer window open, it is the time to get rid of the unwanted players and bring in some quality. But what do I hear? Liverpool making a move for Emile Heskey and Nistlerooy? I believe these are not the players for Liverpool. Don't get me wrong, they are good players but already past their best. I hear Maxi Rodriguez is close to signing with Livepool - this would be a good deal for us.
If Liverpool are to build a good team, they should invest on good and young players.

I was away to a film festival during the Liverpool Prtsmouth match. I open my twitter page and there it is - Liverpool one goal down and Mascherano sent off. Not the scoreline I had hoped for seeing that Portsmouth are at the bottom of the Premier League. After an hour I again open my twitter page and I find out Liverpool have lost the game 2-0. A really shameful performance. Thank god, I didn't have to endure the agony of watching the game live (although I had to go through the agony of watching boring documentaries at the festival).
A lot has happened since my last post and all is not good at Liverpool.

Due to my other real life responsibilities (college takes the life out of you), I had to abandon my blogging for a while. Hopefully, I'll be able to post more frequently now. Although I was not blogging, but I've kept tabs on the Reds and boy we are in trouble.

Already out of the Champions League and the League Cup, the fourth position looks out of reach for the Reds. We have done poorly and there is no excuse about it. We have had injuries to key players, but it has just proved that we depend too much on Gerrard and Torres. Our squad lacks depth and that's as simple as that.

But the main reason why we have done so miserably is the sell of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. It was a complete disaster for us. We bought Aquilani but I'm not convinced that he will be able to fill Alonso's boots. I was watching Liverpool's game against Arsenal, there was Alonso sitting in the audience. And for once, I really missed this guy. I have no grudge against him. I believe he would have still been here, if Rafael Benitez had not tried to use him to secure the Gareth Barry deal. Now, we don't have Xabi or Barry. Xabi is what the Real Madrid president described as 'the conductor of the orchestra' or something to that effect. Gerrard was clearly devastated by Alonso's departure. I wish Alonso all the success at Real Madrid but god help the Reds.

Do you think Xabi Alonso's departure is the cause of current form of the Reds? Or, is there something else?

Liverpool have defeated Portsmouth 3 goals to 2 courtesy of late goals from Aurelio, Kuyt and Fernando Torres.
Liverpool started a very weak starting eleven with Kuyt, Alonso and Torres all warming up the subs bench. Captain Gerrard wasn't available with am injury that can sideline him for another three weeks. It was a poor showing by the Reds in the first half and in the second half they were a goal down and it looked like that Liverpool's dreams of League title werre shattered but Peter Crouch handed his former club a life line when he gave a back-pass to his keeper and in the resultant indirect freekick Fabio Aurelio smashed home the equilizer.

But there was to be another twist in the game and Portsmouth again took the lead. This time around Dirk Kuyt came to Liverpool's rescue with a goal from a very narrow angle. Then it was time for the kid from Spain as he headed in the header from close range and Liverpool heaved a sigh a relief.

After a string of draws in the Premier League, Liverpool finally came back to the winning ways. And the fact that it was their title rivals Chelsea at the losing end, made it extra special. With the win, Liverpool have completed the League double over Chelsea having won the game at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool had a good possession of the ball and they continuously threatened the goal. Although the game seemed to be heading for a draw, Fernando Torres headed a goal for the Liverpool opener. And then he did it again in the injury time. Chelsea were dealt a severe blow as they lost Frank Lampard who was sent off for a foul on Xabi Alonso. All in all, it was a good day for Liverpool.

With a win, Liverpool have managed to climb up a step to second position in the League, two points behind Manchester United. It also means that Chelsea are now 3 points behind Liverpool and 5 points behind ManU. Now, may be if Liverpool continue their winning ways they can put pressure on Manchester United.

I know I am!

It is really embarrassing that the club that is supposed to be challenging for the EPL title, is performing so poorly on the field. With a string of draws and that too embarrassing ones, Liverpool have now surrendered their top position to rivals Manchester United and now will be forced to play the FA Cup replay at Everton's Goodison's Park and it is not a happy ground to go to.

With rumors circulating about the sale of the Club and future of the manager in doubt, Liverpool could have at least maintained their good form on field but it is not to be. As I said in the earlier post, we have got to improve and show our true form to others.

On top of that, Manchester Untied have thrashed Chelsea 3-0 and now are just five points behind Liverpool with two games in hand. This means that if ManU manage to win their two games they will overtake Liverpool and lead the EPL.

For Liverpool, it's the easiest 4 points dropped in EPL. They should have easily won against Stoke City both away and at home. They were really awful at Stoke City and we have got just ourselves to blame if Manchester United overtake us.

Liverpool have defeated Preston North End 2-0 with the help of goals from Spanish duo Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. Liverpool put out a strong team against Preston which included the likes of Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane in the starting line-up.

As expected, Liverpool were very dominant but Preston, too, proved to be a tough nut to crack. Liverpool had many chances to score goals but they couldn't capitalize on them and notably Robbie Keane missed some glorious opportunities. It was Gerrard's first game since the infamous incident after the Newcastle game and he was calm and composed and dominated the midfield. He was later described as a 'Model Pro' by Sammy Lee. But, it was Albert Riera who broke the deadlock with a stunning strike. With a one goal lead, Liverpool were far from comfortable in the second half as Preston created a lot of problems for them. But Fernando Torres came from the substitute-bench to score the second goal and secure a place for Liverpool in the fourth round. It's good to have him back after such a long absence.

The game also saw a strong performance from Emiliano Insua and it seems that we may have finally got a good solution for our left back position.

A new year dawns upon us and it may seem that it brings sad news for all the Liverpool fans.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's arrest has been well publicized following a pub bust-up in Liverpool. Just hours after Gerrard guided Liverpool to a 5-1 victory over Newcastle, he was arrested for a pub brawl. A man has had facial injuries and needed hospital treatment. But the exact details of the mishap is not available and false rumors have been circulating on the news.

Gerrard's exact role in the mishap is not known and he is innocent until proven guilty. He has a clean record and has had no problems of this kind in the past. He has the support of the Liverpool fans and the club behind him. I just wish that this becomes a thing of the past soon and that Gerrard remains focused in football.

We are with you, Gerrard!

Liverpool thrashed Newcastle United 5-1 at St. James' Park. It was a wonderful display of football from the Reds and Captain Steven Gerrard led by example. He opened the scoring and later on, added another. Sami Hyypia scored the second Liverpool goal with a powerful header and then Ryan Babel added one. Xabi Alonso too got himself a goal with a penalty kick when Ryan Babel was brought down by a Newcastle defender.

The game began with a frantic pace and Liverpool were very commanding with their possession. The Newcastle defense was non-existent and the Liverpool got chance after chance in the first 15 minutes. Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given was simply superb though and Liverpool could have scored more than 10 goals if it hadn’t been for him. Apart from him, all other Newcastle players were simply absent.

For Liverpool, Gerrard was simply the best and Lucas Leiva gave one of the best performances in a Liverpool shirt. His superb pass to set up Gerrard’s second goal was world class. Carragher and Hyypia were brilliant in the defense as was Mascherano who ran the show from the midfield. And it was good to see Insua getting regular football for the Reds first team.

Good news, Chelsea could only manage a draw against Fulham. This means they drop two points and now we have a three point lead above them. I remember Lampard saying Chelsea would claim the top spot by Christmas. Now we go into the New Year with a three point lead and the top position in the English Premier League.

Liverpool showed why they are at the top of the table with a great game of football against Bolton. Bolton, looking to add their name to the list of clubs which came to Anfield and managed a draw, were brilliantly beaten by three goals from Liverpool. Albert Riera opened up the scoring with a nice volley and Robbie Keane scored two confident goals to show that he is now back to scoring form having scored three goals in two games.

Bolton came to Liverpool hoping to draw and get away with a point but Liverpool showed one of the best performances since beating Manchester United. After all the criticism and talks of him leaving the club in the January, Robbie Keane has answered back superbly. He has just begun to show the class that was expected of him when he signed with Liverpool in the summer. I hope he continues his form in this busy winter period.

I have reading football forum and it seemed to me that everyone (specially the Liverpool supporters) are talking about the Liverpool youngsters and I quite agree with what is being said about them.

The first name which came up everywhere is Emiliano Insua. The young Argentine is really doing well and his performance against Arsenal was really good and for the first time in many months I saw someone going forward in the left side and supply some decent cross for the strikers. Though Insua is short in stature, he is calm and composed and I think he has a great future with the Reds. He should get more starts for improving himself and I can see him as a regular left-back for Liverpool in the future.

Then comes, Nabil El Zhar. Though, I was not convinced with his earlier showings, he really has come a long way since then. He really gives options to the manager. He has a stiff competition ahead of him and he should really word hard to remain in the first team.

Others like Damian Plessis and Darby are also players to watch for the future. Plessis has already given us some memorable performance against strong teams and he is really an assest to our team.

Liverpool visited the Emirates Stadium and came out with a 1-1 draw against Arsenal with Robbie Keane scoring for the Reds.

It was Robin van Persie who broke the deadlock with a fine goal which saw Arsenal take a 1-0 lead. Then it was the turn of Keane who was included in the starting line-up to score an impressive goal for a striker who was said to be out of form and possibly out of Anfield in the coming transfer window. The game also saw Adebayor of Arsenal sent off for two yellow cards.

Although, Liverpool might have been lucky to get a point at the Emirates, I thought Liverpool couldn't make their one man advantage count. It seemed that they were afraid to attack arsenal in the second half as the 10-man Arsenal were the more threatening of the two teams and had more of the ball. Even Wenger said that he was puzzled by the lack of initiative by Liverpool. Well, for a Liverpool fan like me, I'd say we lost two points at the Emirates (Gerrard missed a superb chance to score for Liverpool and take all the three points). Well, now the top position of the EPL depends upon the result between Everton and Chelsea.

Liverpool's performance was really awful against Hull City in the English Premier League. What should have been an assured performance in front of the home crowd, the Reds were two goals down to the visitors. While the game opened with frantic pace with Liverpool getting most of the ball and chances nothing came from it. We were a goal down and then an own-goal from Jamie Carragher. It was the skipper Steven Gerrard who responded with two goals to become level with the visitors but I still say that the goals were rather gifted than earned. And so the score remained for the rest of the game with the Reds pressing for the winner which never came.

While I praise the efforts of Gerrard and Alonso, players like Benayoun and Kuyt deserve no praise for their performance. Again, Kuyt and Benayoun missed many chances and all their hard efforts went to waste when they could not capitalize on the given opportunities. And I still don't know why Keane wasn't introduced early in the second half so give us more options. Why Rafa? Why? We have drawn our last three home games and if Chelsea win today it might be a long and hard winter for us because of the tough fixtures ahead.

Liverpool have defeated PSV in the Champions League 3-1 to top their group. Ryan Babel, Albert Riera and David Ngog scored for the Reds after falling 1-0 behind at Eindhoven. Players like Gerrard, Alonso and Reina were rested and young players were included in the starting line-up. With the win, Liverpool have managed to top their group ahead of Atletico Madrid. It was heartening to see the debut of youngsters Stephen Darby, Jay Spearing and Martin Kellyand Ngog scoring a Champions League goal.

On the other news, it's seems now certain that Rafa Benitez will stay at anfield after months of speculation over his future. He had been linked to Real madrid (Juan de Ramos has been appointed the manager there) and Juventus. Also, Rafa Benitez has dismissed rumors that Robbie Keane and Ryan Babel may be on their way out of Anfield in January. It's a good news that Rafa Benitez will be around to for a long term at Anfield to groom the young players that he has brought in. Good luck to you, Rafa!

Liverpool maintained their league leaders position with a hard fought win over Blackburn Rovers. Xabi Alonso scored a cool goal (after a miss-fire by Kuyt) and Yossi got the second. Blackburn however pulled one back but captain Steven Gerrard scored in the extra time to give Liverpool a 3-1 win over the Rovers. While the work input by the likes of Gerrard, Alonso, Carragher a nd Hyypia was impressive (as usual), the same could not be said of players like Yossi Benayoun and Ryan Babel. With the chances that were presented to Yossi Benayoun, He could have scored a hat-trick.

With all the top four club winning their matches yeasterday, little is changed at the top of the table. And Liverpool and still top of the table. But Liverpool should start scoring some goals kill the the opponents while they can.

Liverpool players and fans showed their support to Michael Shields, a Liverpool fan serving a jail term, with a mosaic display in the Kop and the Liverpool players wore jerseys with 'Free Michael Now' written on them during warm-up session before the game against west Ham United.

The mosaic was held up in the Kop spelling out Free Michael Now and the match-day programme contained an article declaring the 22-year-old's innocence. "Liverpool fan Michael Shields should be here at Anfield for tonight's game," it began. "Instead, he will be sitting in a prison cell."

Actress Sue Johnston, accompanied by Shields' parents, gave a speech asking Justice Secretary, Jack Straw to do the right thing.

Shields was jailed for 15 years, later reduced to 10 years on appeal, for the attempted murder of Martin Georgiev. The Liverpool fan has always protested his innocence and despite another man, Graham Sankey, confessing to the crime, a statement he later retracted, he has failed to have his conviction overturned. Shields has since been transferred to HMP Haverigg in Cumbria to serve the rest of his sentence.
