The National Shrine of the Sacred Heart

On October 2, 2009 (First Friday of the month), the NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE SACRED HEART was declared a JUBILEE SHRINE, officiated by the former Archbishop of Manila; Cardinal Gaudencio B. Rosales at a concelebrated Mass in the morning.

The honor is granted to this Church for being a National Shrine of the Sacred Heart, this same year being declared a Year of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, plus being the Year of the Priests (150th death anniversary of St. John Vianney, Cure of Ars - Parish Priest of Ars).

To gain the plenary indulgence, all who visit the Shrine must be in the state of grace, receive Holy Communion, and say the following prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father (Pope Benedict XVI) and Priests: Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and the invocations: Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us; St. John Marie Vianney, Pray for us .

St. Anthony Church - Macau

This church was first made of bamboo and wood before 1560, this is one of the oldest churches in Macao. The church was reconstructed in stone in 1638 and rebuilt in 1810 and 1875, while the present appearance and scale of the church dates back to 1930.

Saint Anthony Church is considered to be the first church of Macau built in 1588. The history of the present building is introduced briefly on a plaque by the door: "Built in 1638. Burnt in 1809. Rebuilt in 1810. Burnt again in 1874. Repaired in 1875" However, there is a cross in the churchyard bearing the date of 1636. Another fire make another restoration is necessary in 1930 and further work was done on the facade and tower in 1940. The present neo-classical church dates back to 1930 and 1950 remodeling. The interior area of church is extremely elegant. The barrel roof which is made of wood has simple trimmings. The high altar is one of the best neo-classical architecture in Macau.The local district or area is traditionally Macanese. Sunday services in Portuguese are still remained in this church. Previously, members of the Portuguese community would hold wedding ceremonies there, so It was given the Chinese name of Fa Vong Tong (Church of Flowers).

Beside the Church is the Jardim De Luis De Camoes

Jardim Luis de Camoes is a park named after a 16th Century poet warrior, who visited Macau and written some of his epic tale “Os Lusias” while living here. Based on my research the one thing to note on this place is the park main gate in which the kung fu film is taken – Bruce Lee’s “Fist of Fury”.

Most of the churches we visited in Macau are walking distance from the famous Senado Square. From Senado Square walk northward going to the Cathedral, St. Dominic Church and St. Anthony Church. St Anthony Church is a 3-min walk from the Ruins of St. Paul.

Do not confuse the Macau Cathedral with the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, which is now only a standing facade. The Macau Cathedral has been a church since 1576. The original church was rebuilt in 1850 to a much larger size. A typhoon severely damaged that church in the 1870s. It was finally rebuilt in 1937 in concrete, in the form which remains today. Adjacent to the Cathedral is the Bishop's Palace with a small museum and across from the church is a pleasant square with a fountain, large cross and many benches.

St. Dominic Church

The St. Dominic's Church located near Leal Senado is a Catholic church. The church was built in 1587 by three Spanish Dominican priests, and it was where the first Portuguese newspaper, “A Abelha da China” (The China Bee), was published in 1822. The church is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kun Iam Statue

In Macau,

Is a 20m-high bronze figure, emerging Virgin Mary–like from a 7m-high lotus in the outer harbor of Macau, which is probably the only statue in the world of the goddess of mercy that is not facing the sea. The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre is an information center on Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

Symphony of Lights

In Hong Kong

The Symphony of Lights is a synchronized building exterior light and laser display show, featuring buildings on sides of the Victoria Harbor of Hong Kong accompanied by music. The technology was developed by Australian firm Laservision. It is held every night for ten minutes. The Guinness World Records has named A Symphony of Lights the world's largest permanent light and sound show. We watched this show at the Avenue of Stars around 8PM.

Spectators can listen to the show's music and English narration nightly live along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront between the Avenue of Stars and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the promenade outside the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night, and on radio every night on 103.4FM along the harbor front or by calling 35 665 665 (usual service charges apply).

The Avenue of Stars is built to pay tribute to outstanding professionals of Hong Kong's film industry, to promote tourism industry, and to consolidate Hong Kong's position as Asia's World City. This is located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade which was opened last April 27, 2004. The place has a great view of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong mainland business district. When we visited this place, we also watched the symphony of lights show.

Cathedral of Immaculate Conception

In Hong Kong

When we visited Hong Kong, we attended English Sunday Mass around 9:30AM at this Cathedral and it was a very pleasant scene to see different races of people worshiping the Lord as one. Whether Asian, European, American, African, Australian, Caucasian, White, Black, Brown, Dark, tall and short - all are gathering before the Lord our God.

The first Roman Catholic cathedral of Hong Kong was built in 1843 and was destroyed in a fire in 1859. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1883 and the first Mass was celebrated on 7 December 1888. It was a Cathedral from the time it was built, as the seat of the apostolic vicariate that preceded the establishment of the diocese in 1946; however, it was not consecrated as a cathedral until 1938.

The Cathedral underwent renovation in 2002, and the renovation project was recognized by an Honorable Mention in the 2003 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The Peak Tower

Have a fabulous view from one of Hong Kong's most striking landmark, The Peak Tower which was enhanced in 2006. The Peak Tower, with its iconic wok-like top, offers a dazzling array of shops and sure to make for many happy hours of great dinning with a view experience, leisurely shopping and souvenir hunting and a 360 degree panoramic view of Hong Kong Business District.

The Sky Terrace 428 which was on the top of the Peak Tower building is standing at 428 meters above sea level, offers great view but with a certain fee.

The Peak Tower and Peak Galleria offers great shopping and dinning experience.

My wife and I went to the roof deck viewing of the Peak Galleria since this is free of charge.

Getting to The Peak is thru the Peak Tram located in St John Building near the Cotton Tree Drive. This is one of the World's oldest and most famous funicular cable monorail, the tram rises to 396 meters (about 1,300 feet) above sea level. It is so steep that the buildings you pass look like they are leaning a gradient of between 4 to 27 degrees.

The Peak is one of Hong Kong's popular attractions. It is 396 meters (about 1,300 feet) above sea level and covers a stunning view of Hong Kong Mainland. It is the mountain behind the Hong Kong Business District. This place also includes the Peak Tower and Peak Galleria which offers great shopping and dining; a must-visit attraction like Madame Tussauds; and the unforgettable Peak Tram ride.

THE PEAK TRAM

Getting to the Peak is thru the Peak Tram located in St John Building near the Cotton Tree Drive. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes travel going up and down the Peak. It is so steep that the buildings you pass look like they are leaning a gradient of between 4 to 27 degrees.

This hotel is a 3 star hotel in Hong Kong mainland near the Kennedy Town Praya.

We stayed here during our visit in Hong Kong and this would be the cheapest 3 star hotel at the time of our visit.

Then from the Central Station, go to the Connaught Road or Chater road and ride the Tram going to Kennedy Town Praya. Disembark at Queens Road West then walk going towards Collinson St and reach the Cosco Hotel in just 3 minutes.

Holy Week Procession

Holy Week is a significant religious festival in the Philippines. Holy Week is known as “Semana Santa” (the original Spanish name), or by its Filipino name “Mahál na Araw”. Many communities observe procession of the Passion of Christ which is held during the evening of Good Friday in Maragondon, Cavite.

Have you experienced joining a procession in the Philippines? Everybody should at least try it once in their lifetime. It is said that you are also in one with the Passion and Death of Christ. See the rest of the blog...

The procession is usually started by the church sacristans carrying the cross and candles.

Then procession ends with a marching band playing “Ave Maria songs” and/or religious songs.

We went to this resort twice already. This is a nice beach resort only 30 minutes drive from Manila.

Mt. Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Luzon, near the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga.

My wife and her friends visited Mt Pinatubo last April 2012.

First they started at the pick-up point then riding the 4x4 vehicles going to the trekking point

It was a fun ride traveling thru dust, rocky road and streams.

Then trekking going to the crater-lake accompanied by the tour guides (included in the tour package)

Then they walk thru lahar sand, rocky streams and uphill dunes.

Do not forget to drink lots of water (quench your thirst - rehydrate)

Getting near already… Whoa, what a wonderful sight… The Pinatubo Crater-Lake…

Now, going down to the Crater-Lake

Swim anyone?? Do not over soak yourself on the lake because of sulfuric content…

Then boat ride going to the other side of the crater-lake where the water is much hotter because of volcanic activities underneath

This ends the tour… They will go back to the pick-up point where they started…

Fun in Maragondon, Cavite

We went to Maragondon, Cavite last April and spend our holiday. We had fun there doing the following activities which are good for the family and friends.

1) Riding “Balsa” and cruising on the river

We rented this Balsa and a motorized boat

The Balsa is being pulled by the motorized boat.

On our balsa cruise, we can see the Maragondon Church from a far – the Nuestra Senora De La Asuncion Parish.

2) Crossing the Hanging Bridge

For those who haven’t experience a true hanging bridge, try this one. The bridge is wobbling while you are crossing it. You should be good in balancing in order to cross swiftly.

Ancestral House of Emiliano Riego De Dios

Emiliano Riego de Dios (September 7, 1864 - February 14, 1926) born in Maragondon, Cavite, was a revolutionary leader and the secretary-general of the “Asociacion de los Veteranos de la Revolucion”. He is also a member leader of the “Katipunan” established by Andress Bonifacio.

Emiliano Riego De Dios parents are Sotero Riego De Dios and Jorga Loyola. He became a “Katipunero” in 1896 and fought together with his brothers Coronel Vicente (1868-1936) and General Mariano (1875-1935). Then he was nominated as the Minister of War in the Tejeros Convention on March 22, 1897. He was also appointed as the Military Governor of Cavite in 1898 and Vice President of Hunto in Hong Kong, November 1898.

Nuestra Senora De La Asuncion Parish

The Nuestra Senora De La Asuncion Parish (or Our Lady of the Assumption Parish) is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and was erected by the Jesuit friars in the year 1618 and was made a parochial church in 1627. It was declared a national heritage by the national museum in July 31, 2001

The Pink Sisters

In Tagaytay

We usually make it a point to visit Pink Sister's convent every time we go to Tagaytay.

Here are the things that we can do at Pink Sister’s convent:

1) The Blessed Sacrament is always exposed in the Church

2) This place is a place of silence and peace

3) You can pray, contemplate and discern on God’s message for your life

4) Write down your prayers of praises, thanks, wishes and forgiveness to a piece of paper

5) Then this paper can be drop at the drop boxes on the right and left side of the church

6) The paper that you offered will be prayed by the Pink sisters

7) Then have time to stroll the garden and love the place

Sorry but I do not have pictures of the church interior since they forbid it.

The Pink Sisters (or Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters) are strictly confined contemplative nuns who center their life in praying and worshiping God through the adoration of the exposed Blessed Sacrament. Each of the Pink Sisters takes turn to pray and vigil 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Sundays – 7:30 am and 5:00 pm
Regular days: 6:30 am

How to get there?
Take South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and exit at Sta. Rosa. Then take Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road going to Tagaytay City until you reach the Crossing after Tagaytay Market and then turn right. And another turn right upon reaching the Tagaytay Rotunda to Aguinaldo Hi-way (Manila-bound). Then a few minutes turn right at Arnoldus Road. The Pink Sisters convent is at the end of this road.

In Hong Kong and Macau

Because of our busy and hectic schedule during the Holy Week, my wife and I have not visited 7 churches as part of our devotion and heritage. We were supposed to visit the churches of Cavite province from Bacoor all the way to Maragondon, Cavite. But everything was too tight for our schedule so we decided to have the Visita Iglesia some other time.

And when we travelled to Hong Kong and Macau on the last week of April, we decided to make this our Visita Iglesia for 2012.

1) Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong

4) St. Anthony Church - Macau

5) St. Augustine Church - Macau

The St Augustine Church is part of a monastery founded by Spaniards in 1586. The facade was originally of Baroque style but the existing facade is more neoclassic dating from 1814.

Did you know that? On every 1^st Sunday of Lent, there is a procession of statue of Christ carrying the cross, Our Lord of the Passion, which is taken out from St. Augustine Church and transferred to the Cathedral for a night. Then return to St. Augustine Church on the next day.

6) St. Lawrence Church

St. Lawrence's Church was first made of wood in 1560's, replaced by Taipa in 1618 and reconstructed in stone during 1801-3. St. Lawrence's Church has twin towers, one of which was once an ecclesiastic prison, and a fine Chinese tile roof.

The interior has wooden ceiling which hang elegant chandeliers. The high altar contains the figure of St. Lawrence. And above him hangs a crown held by a cherub and behind is a stained glass window with a dove of peace. Over the window is a wooden lamb.

7) St. Joseph’s Church and Seminary

This church was opened in 1758 as part of the Jesuit seminary of St. Joseph. Located on a hill, with twin brick roofed towers, it was a famous landmark that was often a subject for artists.

During our visit to this church, the relic of St Francis Xavier was here. It is placed on the right side of the church which contains the bone from the arm of St. Francis Xavier, who followed his missionary successes in Japan by coming to the China coast, where he died in 1552 on Sanchuan Island, 50 miles from Macau.

8) BONUS: Ruin’s of St. Paul Cathedral

The ruin is one of Macau's most famous landmark and used as an iconic symbol of Macau. The Cathedral of St. Paul (Portuguese cathedral dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle) was built by Jesuit in 1602 adjoining St. Paul's College (the first Western college in the Far East). The church complex (church and school) was destroyed by fire during a typhoon in 1835. In 2005, the ruin was officially enlisted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.

Bonifacio Trial House

In Maragondon, Cavite

This is the place where Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan, was on trial before he was executed at Mt. Buntis.

Andres Bonifacio, one of the great Filipino heroes and called “Supremo” (Supreme Leader), founded the Katipunan (Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan “KKK” ng mga Anak ng Bayan which means Highest and Most Respected Society of the Children of the Country) in July 7, 1892 to fight the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. And he is also considered by some historians to be the first President, but still not officially recognized.

This place is open from Tuesday to Sunday (8am to 4pm)

Ube Jam of Good Shepherd

If you happen to visit Tagaytay city for weekend getaway, you may want to buy some Ube Jam (Purple Taro in english) as a take home or “pasalubong”. As for Me, I love Ube jam from Baguio and Tagaytay. We never fail to drop by Good Shepherd Sisters to buy these delicious Ube jams.
