When you maintaining 8 blogs, it's nice to freshen things up every little while. Today I turned http://zipolita.blogspot.com in to a portal with all my links. I added sweet little new social media icons that I got free http://www.chethstudios.net/2009/09/free-social-media-network-icons.html and I'm updating all the blogs with those.

I also am changing some original plans of having everything link together, but instead I'm going to have it so each blog pretty much stands on it's own and they all link to and from Zipolita.

So if things see a little tops turvey for a bit, they are. I hope you enjoy the new looks. Cheers.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is when you use specific words that will help the Search Engines find you and place you higher in the ranks or search results.

What is FTP?

In simple English, FTP is when you have a bunch of files, for example, a website, with HTML files, Jpegs, pdfs, gifs, mp3s and you've got them on your computer but you want the whole world to see your website, so you need to get them to a server or webhost, where the entire world can see them. You use an FTP program to transfer the files. You are just sending them out ...to a destination, just like you sennd emails, but this program helps you send large files and lots of files easily and quickly.

What is Domain Name Registration?

So Domain Name Registration is when you register your name so that no one else has that address. You rent that name as long as you pay for it. If you stop paying to rent it, someone can get it. This is very important to consider as some nasty person may take your good name and put a website on there with something that you don't like. So consider that very carefully.

But people are really smart and if the name you want isn't there you can usually play with the spelling and get something close. Since people use all sorts of methods to send people to their websites- where there domain name- their address is, you don't have to worry to much about getting an exact spelling.

Using Social Media is all about people helping you find your website. Since people are very web savy nowadays compare to say 2000 you don't need to worry about things like that the way we had to back then.

People used to horde domain names thinking that there was some kind of market out there, but if your smart you can figure out just the right name, that quick and catchy and captures your markets attention.

The super cool thing about blogs are you don't have to pay for a domain name (the exception is Wordpress.org but as mentioned below that is actually a website with built in blog that you upload(ftp) to the internet so you can host your site their with your domain name)

Another cool thing about Blogger.com is you can have as many blogs as you like. So I have 7, but the tricky part is you need to maintain them- update them- so people will return.

Anyways that is my explanation about Domain names and you can see the technical definition below by Wikipedia.

Oh just one more point, most Webhosts will offer you the domain name registration, so as suggested in the other posts for Webhosting just go to those sites and you will see the packages they offer.

What's a Domain Name?
Basically it your address on the web. It is what you want people to remember when they go looking for you on the internet. Like Google http://www.google.com , or Macarldie http://www.macarldie.com only it is a certain length and it has www. in front of it and can have different endings such as .com, .biz, .ca

Blogs have different types of domain names, so that your actually being hosted on their site. Like this site, Angelz Web Design is hosted by Blogger.com http://www.blogger.com and so for me to have my blog on here it http://angelzwebdesign.blogspot.com and it had no www in front. The same goes for Wordpress but with Wordpress you have the option of downloading a template and having it manipulated and then re-loading by FTP- file transfer protocal up on to the internet and that way you can have your own domain name. Wordpress.com http://www.wordpress.com is the same as Blogger.com http://www.blogger.com whereas Wordpress.org is where you actually download a template and upload it to a Webhost and get your domain name.

I hope this simplify things so that you have a better understanding of these terms and below I have given Wikipedia's explanations which are more technical.

An Important part of building a Website for someone is educating the client.

If you don't educate your client then they don't understand what they are paying for. This can lead to misunderstandings later on.

Very Important- First you must have a contract clearly defining the goals of the project.

Here I am going to give you the info on webhosting and so this will clear up alot of questions.

What is a Webhost?

Okay, so I hope this helps explain it. Basically when you have someone build your website, they build it on their computer. Then the files need to be transferred to another computer- a server- for security reasons where it is "webhosted." So they are transferred up into cyberspace so to speak. Basically they are just transferred to a big secured computer that is able to offer access to everyone, thus your website is put on the the World Wide Web - The Internet.

Depending on what you require, you pay the webhost a small fee each month for this service. So companies like Shaw and Telus will even give you free webspace, but you will not have your own Domain Name. I'm going to talk about Domain in the next post so hang in there.

Here are a few definitions from above in plain English, so you can understand it easier

FTP- File Transfer Protocol - this is when you use a program on your computer to transfer the files to the webhost. The Web Designer usually takes care of it for you, but you can do it yourself too!

ISP- Internet Service Provider -These are the people that you pay to surf the web, like Shaw, Telus and other companies.

Webhost- This is the person that you pay so that you can put your website on their secure server and that people around the world can see it.

Let's Talk About Social Media For a Minute!

Let's talk about Social Media for a minute, I am going to post this on my Social Media Super Hero Blog http://socialmediasuperhero.blogspot.com as well because it's totally relevant.

See the post below as this is a continuation of the same subject "Websites I like to Build!"

This client does not want a blog and believes that they don't really need a website and is only just now...here in 2010 going to get one.

Please I beg of this person to read up on Social Media or take a Social Media course at Emily Carr or BCIT with Rebecca Coleman. (See video and links on post below) If they do, I promise they are going to be rewarded with so much knowledge that their company is going to flourish so much compared to if they don't.

Even reading this they are going to get a heads up on a lot of things. For instance...Please, Please, Please put in a blog. Google loves blog and hates a boring old static website. Who blames them, if you have been to a website, seen what you need, made a few notes...Why go back ? Ask yourself, do you? No? Why not? Because we are too frigging busy right!

But with a blog, you have all this new stuff and Google likes it and grabs it and you have a lot more info on the web and people can find you. That said you need to create a Facebook presence and a Twitter account and then you'll really be communicating with the world and people will start to find you.

Now there is so much more to be said about Social Media and if you listen to what Rebecca Coleman says, you will learn a super valuable piece of info, "Marketing has changed". The playing field has been leveled and us little guys do have a chance against these corporate giants. We can publish our voice and it can be heard, if we just implement these super new tools that the universe is providing.

We have come a long way baby! I learned web design just before the Dot.com crash and for years I just built little websites for myself, basically almost intranets, ..that is basically what they were, because my circle was so small and I just could not get people to look at them.

Friends and family actually got pissed at me, because I was spamming them, not my intention at all, but I just had no other idea of how to get that info out there, other than to keep emailing them and say "Look at this, look at this" "Please tell your friends" This did not work, let me tell you.

Now with all these new tools you don't have to make the same mistakes I did. You can thank all the people who "screwed up" for paving the way so that you and your biz can flourish, so you can share your passion with others and they will want to follow you and see what the heck your up to and actually buy your art or product or info, what ever it is that you want to share with this now gigantic world, this huge gigantic library in the sky so to speak.

We are highly skilled talented artists, photographers, bloggers, web designers, videographers and the knowledge we contribute and invest in you and your project is worth every penny and more that you pay. We are highly educated and have continued to learn and keep up with all the latest trends and technologies.

So next time someone quotes a website at $1000-$10,000, Stop and Think!

How much of an investment is this over a year, 5 years, 10 years. Odds are it's very economical and you will reap the benefits because your business, art, music or what ever you are trying to promote will succeed.

"How much educating are they doing?"

"How difficult is this design"

"Do you need someone who codes HTML"

"Is this person photographer?" "Where will the photos come from?"

"Is this person capable of making Videos?" "Can they make videos and add them to your website and blog?

"Can they add a blog"

"Do they know the value of a Blog?"

"Does the person your dealing with understand Social Media?"

"Does this person understand Facebook, Youtube, Twitter & Linkedin"

"What's copywriting?" "Can your Web Designer write copy?"

"If they can't write copy, who will?"

"Do you need to learn about Blogs, and Social Media, do you need Video?" Videos are hugely important as People Love to Share Videos and Music Helps Trigger Emotion, something that is important very today. You've heard of Viral Videos, well this is all important stuff these days and you need to Educate Yourself or Pay for Someone to Educate You.

Time to Learn. Isn't that what it comes down to. The other things is "Do you really want to?" Do you have Time to? If you did want to or if you had the knowledge, wouldn't you have done it by now?

Websites I like to Build! :)

So I was given the opportunity to quote on a website recently. I turned it down. Why in the world would you do this, you might inquire.

Well there were a few reasons. One it was for a family member's employer. Remember the adage, family and money,( in this case biz) don't mix. Two is there was going to be a lot of educating the client and Three the client thinks web designers make too much money and did not want to pay much.

So let's address the first issue, based on the last two points, there was a high feasibly that there were going to issues with this website, possibly misunderstandings on both sides, that while they may be worked out, the family member's job could be compromised, and it would be just stupid to put oneself in that position, in my opinion. Remember, this is my blog, and it's my opinion so while others may disagree, I felt this was the best course of action, even though I did need this job or the income it could provide.

That said, I believe in "Go with the Flow" "What goes around comes around" and "Never compromise your health or integrity, or family for money!!"

So let's address the second issue.

The client needs a lot of educating. This client had the employee build a proto-type of the design and believes that because they have done most of the work, they do not want to pay much. Hmmmm!

Well that is true, to some extent, but most website designers are provided with the logo and text (copy) and and then a design is worked out. While the logo and a prototype of the design was provided, it is the coding that gets tricky. This client wanted the design exactly as laid out, no artistic freedom here, or no margin for error if you can not get the code to layout out EXACTLY as this client wanted...that's scary to me, Promising something that you won't know until it's finished.

I'm old school. I code in HTML. It's a very valuable skill, one that took many hours to learn and it lets me do a ton of things that are not that easy if you don't.

My code is very clean and that if you were to learn a bit of html and wanted to go in and change something you could. Not so if you build it in Dreamweaver or some other programs. Even the templates for blogger seem complicated to me.

I believe I have designed some lovely websites, super functional with great navigation, they include galleries, e-commerce, & music and videos .

These are just 3 examples of my websites that are online, I have a lot more on my computer that I can show you, and I could show you what has worked and what hasn't and suggest what I believe would work best for you based on the info you provide me.

None of these have Frames, these may have a little JavaScript but just to do Rollovers. I don't care to utilize these because when you do want to go back and change something, it's very complicated. Everyone will want to change their website at some point, and most will not want to pay much for it. This is when issues will arise.

This all comes back to educating the client. And why should we have to educate the client for free. We went to school, I paid $11,000 for my Web Design Course, not to mention the 4 years of College, 2 years of which were Professional Photography and just tons of money mixed with blood sweat and tears of practicing and continual learning as the web design and internet continually changed since 2000, when I first started building websites. How do you teach your client all this if they are busy and have no interest in learning these things.

Thru these last 11 years I have learned what works and what doesn't and why. To teach that in an hour or 2 consultation is not possible, which is the consultation, quote time. So that communication and education needs to be built into the price of the website, otherwise it is impossible to make a profit, this I have learned the hard way, sadly and so I know when to say, "No, this is not a good job to take on."

I've more or less addressed the issue of the client thinking Web Designer makes too much money.

Well I wish that were true, but I don't believe it, because if people are charging too low they don't have the education and knowledge to know why they are charging to low. Yes, we may need the money, but by the time you educate that client on why you need to build the site the way you do, you will have not made any profit and actually lost money in the end.

So to end this post, the websites I like to build is one where the client is flexible, has a reasonable budget, is open to some education and has faith in the designer's artistic and technical knowledge.

Then it's fun to build the site, you know that the client will be fair and that in the end both of you will be satisfied with the results and the client will be provided with an excellent design that will compliment his business and the designer will be compensated fairly for their talent, knowledge and time.

In the end, the client knows he'll be able to feed his family because the website/blog and social media tools will enhance his business and help it grow and flourish and I will be able to feed my family thru my efforts, skill and talent.

Fixing All My Blogs!

So if you want to see some interesting improvements I have made to my blogs, check out the buttons that I added to the side of my blogs. Now they have a nice uniform feeling, with easy obvious user friendly navigation. I think it's pretty cool.

I have also gone thru and changed all the backgrounds and made sure that I am using the same basic template for all.

The reason for alot of these changes emerged from a discussion that occurred in my Social Media class and it was suggested that it important to have a website as well as a blog, well when you know the rules you can break them and I personally like to push the boundaries, so that is why I have created the buttons that link these blogs like a website. Weird eh! Well maybe it is, but I like it.

Okay so that's what I did. Stay tuned as I make more changes, and post lots of cool and interesting things that interest me and hopefully you.

Building a New Website for a Library!

I'm pretty excited, I am just about to start building a new website. I haven't been building websites for a while, just blogs mainly so this will be challenging and fun and I am looking forward to exercising that part of my brain. I code in html and then snazz it up to photos, text, video, and things like that.

Anyways I will keep you posted on my progress and show you the end results. I have a couple other pokers in the fire so to speak and I am excited by the work prospects that are coming to light with the fact that I just got a new laptop.

Nothing to fancy, but it serves all my needs and these are actually very simple. Just Photoshop and Editplus and access to the web and I am a happy camper. It is so great, I have waited a really long time and have watched them drop and drop in price.

Last year I almost got one, I was torn between a netbook and I wasn't sure if I could load the programs and things I needed. I am sure glad I waited because for about $100 more I got a really sweet laptop.

Recently I had been forced to use the most antique computer and I was just so miserable as it was slower than the slowest turtle and I couldn't twitter or do alot of the cool new things I was learning in my Social Media class. Now I can though. Now it's all good, and I am glad I waited. It's been hard but everything happens for a reason.

Anyways stay tuned and watch for new website and blogs I build and I will try to add lots of interesting tidbits that I come across.
