Sheltered: A Pre-Apocalyptic Tale from Image Comics

The founders of the survivalist colony Safe Haven are sure that the end of civilization is at hand. Economic collapse, natural disaster, civil war — they're prepared for it all in their underground compound deep in the woods of America's northeast. But, in SHELTERED, the new series from Image Comics by Ed Brisson (COMEBACK) and Johnnie Christmas, the threat to their existence comes from a source they never expected: their own children.

Coming in July, SHELTERED follows the consequences after Safe Haven's younger generation, raised in paranoia and isolation, rebel against their parents and take over the compound. Two leaders emerge from the rebellion: the teenagers Lucas, who led the revolt, and Victoria, who leads another group of kids in their escape. With Victoria set to expose Safe Haven, Lucas and his faction are determined to hunt her and her group down before they reach the nearest town, forty miles away through dangerous wilderness.

The idea for SHELTERED grew out of Brisson's interest in end-of-world scenarios. "Initially, I was researching preppers — people who are actively preparing for natural disasters, nuclear war, societal breakdown — to get and idea of how people would be able to survive any of the above,” said the writer. "My initial idea was to do a post-apocalyptic story. Through my research, I started to get obsessed with the culture — from the outside! I don't own a bunker! — and how it would affect children raised in that sort of environment.”

With the art, Christmas strives to capture the isolation of the setting and the individuality of each character. "We're going to be facing down the apocalypse with these people, it's important to really get a sense of who they are and what they're capable of,” he said. "These kids aren't even out of high school, but they are probably the most prepared folks on earth, when it comes to riding out the end of the world.”

SHELTERED is a full-color comic book, with a five-issue first arc. Its first issue can be pre-ordered now (Diamond code MAY130408) and will be in stores on July 10, 2013. A four-page preview is up now at Multiversity Comics.

Written by Eric Trautmann (RED SONJA, VAMPIRELLA) and featuring interior artwork by Milton Estevam, LADY RAWHIDE #1 features cover artwork by the preeminent "good girl" artist, Joseph Michael Linsner (DAWN).

In LADY RAWHIDE #1, the masked heroine faces not only the corrupt forces of the government - bent on intimidating the populace through privation and cruelty - but also a new team of vigilantes known as the Sisters of the White Rose. The Sisters, inspired by the legends of Zorro and Lady Rawhide, have taken up the struggle against tyranny. While Lady Rawhide supports their goals, she cannot condone their bloody methods and finds herself facing off against her own devotees!

"Lady Rawhide is a thief, a bandit, a rogue," explains Eric Trautmann, writer of the five-part miniseries. "But she exists in a time and place where, as a woman, society has strictly defined what her behavior should be. Her vigilante, Robin Hood-esque actions are subversive, and her overtly flamboyant costuming rejects those social conventions. She's driven by a desire to control her environment on her terms… and society's encumbrances be damned."

Having contributed stories to both RED SONJA and VAMPIRELLA, Trautmann is no stranger to writing strong female characters, especially those that have iconic status in the comic book medium. "Red Sonja will never simper or back down. Vampirella will never admit defeat. Lady Rawhide will never turn her back on someone in need," says Trautmann. "My job is to make sure that I'm delivering the most authentic take on the characters I'm capable of, and not betray those kinds of fundamental, core elements."

Lady Rawhide (along with her alter-ego Anita Santiago) was introduced into the ZORRO mythos in 1994, a masked vigilante skilled with swords, guns, and her signature bullwhip. Driven to avenge her brother's suffering at the hands of a crooked government, she first had an antagonistic relationship with Zorro, but eventually became his confidante and staunch ally. Lady Rawhide's popularity as a ZORRO regular grew, leading to her headlining several LADY RAWHIDE comic series.

Trautmann explains, "I want to capture a sense of fun - this isn't a grim, gritty book. It's pulpy, swashbuckling fun at heart."

LADY RAWHIDE #1 is solicited in the Diamond June Previews catalog for release in August. Joseph Michael Linsner, the critically acclaimed creator of DAWN, provides the cover artwork for both the Regular and Subscription-Only editions of the first issue. Each edition is available to retailers for individual order, although the Subscription-Only edition (presented in a "Black & White Line Art" style) is limited to initial orders as a reward for dedicated Dynamite fans.

Lord of Mars #1 Brings the Legendary Tarzan and John Carter Together

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the upcoming LORDS OF MARS #1 debut in August 2013, a crossover that sees Tarzan and Jane Porter of their LORD OF THE JUNGLE series team with John Carter and Dejah Thoris of the WARLORD OF MARS franchise. The six-issue series will be written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Roberto Castro, with the first issue available in multiple cover editions featuring art by Alex Ross, Francesco Francavilla, Dan Panosian, and Ardian Syaf.

In LORDS OF MARS #1, the legendary Tarzan has claimed his title as Lord of Greystoke, but his very life is threatened when a hunting excursion with his fellow "gentlemen" goes disastrously wrong. Meanwhile, on Mars, John Carter is forced to respond to a veiled threat from his defeated enemies. Mars and Earth might be separated by millions of miles, but a sinister force is at work on both planets, setting the two iconic adventurers on a deadly collision course.

"The two greatest heroes of pulp fiction coming together... what could be better than that?" says Arvid Nelson, writer of the six-part miniseries. "And it blows the lid off the possibilities for storytelling. Earth, Mars, lost civilizations, hidden worlds, interplanetary adventures. But above all, we want LORDS OF MARS to be fun. I can't wait to unleash it on the world."

Nelson was uniquely suited as the writer for the upcoming LORDS OF MARS series, having contributed storylines to Dynamite's comic book series LORD OF THE JUNGLE and WARLORD OF MARS previously. However, the writer stresses that the new story will not require readers to have an extensive knowledge of what's come before. "It's a great jumping-on point. In fact, I always go out of my way to make sure new readers are never at a loss, regardless of where were are in a series." That philosophy fits in perfectly with that of Tarzan and John Carter's shared creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs. "Burroughs was a fanatic for novelty. He didn't like exploring all the details and intricacies of the things he'd invented; it was always about the shiny and new for him."

John Carter and Tarzan are the archetypal science fiction and jungle heroes, respectively, whose literary history stretches back over a century. "Carter is more comfortable around human beings than Tarzan. He's more of a leader, but he's most in his element in times of conflict, as opposed to the backstabbing and intrigue of 'peacetime.' Tarzan is more a force of nature. In terms of raw strength and agility no one can match him, but he's not fully in control of himself." Joining these pulp heroes in LORDS OF MARS are their love interests, Jane Porter and Dejah Thoris, who play pivotal roles in the story.

LORDS OF MARS #1 is solicited in the Diamond June Previews catalog for release in August. Alex Ross, one of the industry's leading artists, provides the Main cover edition, while Eisner-winning Francesco Francavilla and fan-favorite Dan Panosian contribute two additional variant covers. If you have attended any comic or pop culture conventions in recent years, then there is no ignoring the craze that is Steampunk. As for those that have missed it, steampunk is a fusion of Victorian era/Wild West fashion, science fiction inspired gizmos, gadgets, and machinery, all of which are powered by steam. The end result is simply put, awesomeness! Artists/curators Sketch and Deadmundo have teamed up with Steam Lab Evolutions to present an awesome show, "Steampunk Los Angeles 2013." The show will feature musical performances, live tattooing, live body painting, artwork from over 50 artists (including yours truly), and numerous vendors.

One piece of exciting news is that comic book artist, Joe Benitez has been added to the list of artists/vendors. We are very excited to see some awesome Lady Mechanika artwork! You can see more of Joe's work at his website www.joebenitez.com.

One of the highlights for me (Obscure), so far this year, was being part of Beefy & Co's, "So BadAss, It's Good" show, which was showcased at Beefy's booth at the WonderCon. It was an honor to have my work displayed next to so many incredible artists whom I admire. It gave me a boost of confidence that my work needed. It made me really step my custom game up. To top that off, I made some friends in the process. As the San Diego Comic Con, draws near, we get ready for Beefy & Co's next custom show, "The Ghost Within Us", which will feature customs from another incredible line-up, many of which are returning from the last show. I often get the inspiration for my customs randomly. So, I often do not have a meaningful concept, but usually create based upon a particular theme or mood that I am in at the moment. This custom 4" munny is an exception. "AWAY WITH YOUR gods!" takes on many issues of our world's overindulgence in material possessions and self-image. Although I made allusions through my specific choices with imagery, I have left the interpretation of this piece up to the viewer. With that said, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

This July, acclaimed comic book creators Matt Fraction (Hawkeye, Casanova, Iron Man) and Howard Chaykin (BLACK KISS, AMERICAN FLAGG) will take readers back to the Golden Age of Television, a time when innocence was as manufactured a fiction as the perfect families in the comedies that captivated audiences at home. Their new Image Comics series SATELLITE SAM, debuting in July, takes a look at the darkness behind the small screen when, in 1951, Carlyle Bishop, the star of the beloved serial "Satellite Sam” turns up dead in a filthy flophouse.

Carlyle's son Michael has a hunch that his father's death was anything but natural, but the only clue is a box full of photographs of women in various states of undress — and Mike can't bring himself to stay sober long enough to make any sense of it.

"It's a detective story, a history of television, and a record of addiction, sex, and depravity during a time when the antiseptic shine off Ozzie and Harriet obscure what was really happening in the world,” said writer Fraction. "And these are just a few of the many joys that come from telling a story about television while it was being invented as a mass medium in New York City.”

The creative team researched television's early days in preparation for the series, getting a feel for the era and for the people who lived real lives while inventing an idealized — and fictionalized — image of families and relationships.

"We'd been talking about SATELLITE SAM for a while, but what really got it going was a long Winter's day Matt and I spent wandering New York, feeling the city's ghosts, its lost and found architecture, ending up at the Paley Center, where we watched kinescopes of long dead men and women, acting out children's fantasies, while living complex lives off-camera,” said Chaykin. "To say that I'm both having the time of my life collaborating on this project, and getting my ass kicked in the process, is to grossly understate the case.”

SATELLITE SAM is an ongoing black-and-white series. Its first issue can be pre-ordered now from the May issue of Previews and will be in stores on July 3.

I receive inspiration to create from all over. My inspiration for my custom 4" kidrobot mini munny titled, "The Antiquated Nomad" came from the time I spent in Iraq during my first deployment. There were a lot of nomadic people around where I was based out of. They lived in tents or makeshift shacks, the kids ran around without shoes, they didn't have their own source for clean water, and they appreciated everything we would give them. It made me realize how much we take for granted at home. The Antiquated Nomad represents humility and necessity. He doesn't take anything for granted. He appreciates everything that he gets. I hope his attitude on life in a world consumed by materialism inspires you to be thankful for what you have. Enjoy.

The Bounce #2 Sara Pichelli Variant Cover from Image Comics

Image Comics has announced a Sara Pichelli variant cover for the second issue of Joe Casey's and David Messina's psychedelic "slacker superhero” series THE BOUNCE.

Pichelli established her status as a sought-after artist illustrating 2011's Ultimate Spider-Man, which introduced Miles Morales as Spider-Man, and has recently been announced as the artist on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Pichelli's cover for THE BOUNCE #2 is her first work for Image Comics.

THE BOUNCE is the second new series penned by Casey (BUTCHER BAKER THE RIGHTEOUS MAKER, GØDLAND) to launch in 2013. The first, SEX, has been received with critical praise and multiple printings of its first and second issues.

The variant cover can be ordered now with the Image Comics code MAR13837. THE BOUNCE #1 will be in stores on May 22, followed by THE BOUNCE #2 in June 26.

Casey's Image Comics titles are among those produced under the Man of Action imprint, a creative studio that includes Steven T. Seagle (THE RE[A]D DIARY), Joe Kelly (I KILL GIANTS), and Duncan Rouleau (THE GREAT UNKNOWN.)
