20 Movie Icons amongst invited guests at 20^th Anniversary Bash

Singapore, 24 May 2012 – Dhoby Ghaut Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) station was a scene to behold as 20 movie icons invaded its platforms earlier this evening. Singaporeans punching out after a day’s work were shocked when amongst the rush hour crowd at the North East Line (NEL) station stood 20 commuters decked in outfits not expected of daily travellers.

It was a sight unlike any that commuters have seen before, with 20 characters including the likes of Spider-Man, Batman, Bruce Lee, Austin Powers, James Bond and even ‘Dark side’ enthusiast, Darth Vader from the Star Wars saga, making a rare and unexpected appearance at the busy MRT interchange.

Commuters were initially confused by the sudden appearance of the movie icons, especially since many of them were famous movie figures, instantly recognizable from comic books as well as characters on the silver screen. Feelings of anxiety were later put to rest when they realised that the entourage was part of a marketing stunt initiated by Golden Village, who celebrates her 20^th anniversary as the leading cinema exhibitor in Singapore.

Said one such commuter, Deborah Chia, aged 23, who was amused to see so many familiar characters standing beside her in the train carriage during her trip to VivoCity: “I was so surprised to see Spiderman, Batman, Iron man and Darth Vader standing next to me on the train! I was wondering what’s going on until I saw a tweet from my friend. GV is twenty already? I didn’t know that. Wow, they have certainly come a long way!”

To celebrate its 20^th birthday, Golden Village, invited the entourage of movie icons to its birthday celebration held at GV VivoCity. Organisers explained that the mascots opted to use the MRT train service to ‘avoid the rush hour traffic’, much to the amusement of many commuters.

As the leader of Singapore’s cinema industry, Golden Village has been providing 20 years of movie magic with the launch of Singapore’s first 10-screen multiplex in Yishun on 28 May 1992. Within two decades, Golden Village has grown to encompass 10 multiplexes, housing 81 screens island-wide. Its 11^th multiplex is slated to open at the end of 2012.

Golden Village will be turning 20 this Monday, 28 May 2012.

All girl super group Berryz Kobo is part of Hello! Project and
consists of Saki Shimizu, Momoko Tsugunaga, ChinamiTokunaga,
MaasaSudo, Miyabi Natsuyaki, Yurina Kumai and Risako Sugaya. They
already have 8 albums and 27singles to their credit.

Berryz Kobo released their debut single, “Anata nashi dewa ikite
ikenai” on Girls’ Day (March 3rd) in 2004,  and have been consistently
impressing fans ever since.  There are many highlights to their 8+
year history, including their 2005 Oricon top 10 hit “Special
Generation”. In 2007, Berryz Kobo gave sold out performances in the
Saitama Super Arena (20,000 seats), becoming the youngest group to
perform in this arena with an average member age below 14 years old.
One year later, they won the Best Newcomer Award at the Asia song
Festival in South Korea and then the Nihon Yuusen Taishou Award for
their cover song of “Dschinghis Khan”. In March 2010, Berryz Kobo was
the first all-girl Japanese group to perform in Bangkok, Thailand.
Their single “Shining Power”, released the same year on November 10th,
is an ending theme for the anime “Inazuma Eleven”.

In 2011, they performed in Seattle for Sakura-Con on April. Their
latest single,“Be Genki <Naseba Naru!>”, was released in March 2012.

Berryz Kobo will perform for the second time in the US at AnimeNEXT in
June 2012, so be ready!!

According to Sanponichi News, 2 million copies of AKB48′s 26th Single, Manatsu no Sound Good have been shipped out on the release day of the Single.

This is the largest amount shipped for AKB48, way surpassing the 1.6 million copies shipped for Kaze wa Fuiteiru, their 23nd Single, released last October, which charted at over 1.3 million copies sold on the first week, according to Oricon Ranking.

Well not that surprising huh… Given that even a bloke like me, purchased 10 copies of it…  For it contains one of the most important piece of paper needed to Vote in the 27th Single Senbatsu Sosenkyo or Election.

Its pretty obvious where will my votes go to.

Sousenkyo, so what is it?

Basically, its a fan voting event whereby fans over the world will vote in their favorite members or oshis into this selection or senbatsu for the coming year till the next sousenkyo. Ever since its first event, the total votes gathered has been increasing tremendously. Last year, the top 2 members, Maeda Atsuko & Oshima Yuko even managed to gathered 132k and 122k votes respectively.

For this year, there will be a overhaul and also, along with the announcement of her graduation, the ever present ace Maeda Atsuko will be sitting out on this sousenkyo, paving way for a interesting battle for the new top and centre position.

This year’s format will be different as well. Gone are the media senbatsu positions (Top 12) and the named rankings has now increased to a total of 64.

All in all for this 27th single senbatsu sousenkyo, the format are as follows:

Senbatsu members for 27th single: Rankings 1st to 16th.
Under girls: Rankings 17th to 32th.
Next girls: Rankings 33th to 48th.
Future girls: Rankings 49th to 64.

All members from AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, HKT48 and kenkyuusei from each group will be participating with the exception of Maeda Atsuko who is set for graduation this summer.

Without further a due, let’s proceed to cast the vote.

Proceed to the site at http://akb48-sousenkyo2012.jp and you should be seeing the screen as above. Select either by member’s name or by team to search for the member you wish to vote for.

To simplify things, I have selected search via team. And you voters should know which team your oshi(s) belongs to. Here it is, the full listing of the teams in the 48 family.

For me, I have selected Team A simply, my kami Oshi, Kojima Haruna is in the team. So I proceed to click on her name.

It’s been two years since the start of the theatrical rendition of the Gundam Unicorn series, and it has been certainly a memorable experience following the series.

While I do enjoy the recent incarnations of the Gundam franchise, I always find myself looking for that depth of story and character that the Universal Century series provided, and Gundam Unicorn is a throwback to that era.

Our dear friends from Sheng Tai Toys were kind enough to invite Ani-culture along for the screening of Episode 5: “The Black Unicorn” at Lido Theaters last Saturday, and it was definitely a fine way to enjoy the latest installment.

Although it certainly could not match the prestige of the Japanese premiere [Link], I appreciated the efforts the organizers took in terms of posters and providing the Japanese release booklets for the attendees- a lovely memento of the event.  And if the turnout is any indication, there is no shortage of Gundam Unicorn fans in Singapore.

What happens next?

While I will not spoil the episode for those who have not watched it, I will give my thoughts about it in general.  The previous episode “At the Bottom of the Gravity Well” was very much an exploration of the motivations of not just Mineva/Audrey and Banagher Links, but of Riddle Marcenas, Suberoa Zinnerman and Marida Cruz as well. Everyone is chained by either the past or their lineage.  “Friend” and “Enemies” are matters of perspective.  Playing on this, “The Black Unicorn” sets in motion the struggle for everyone to find their own path towards the future.

We all marvel at the fantastic mobile suit battles in Gundam Unicorn, but I enjoyed the fact it has always played out as a character driven story. Audrey and Bhagahar reunite once again, and one can sense their time apart has only strengthened their resolve, and perhaps even given them the direction they needed. With the “Unicorn” by her side, can the “Lady” carve a path through an uncertain future?

The relationship between Zinnerman and Marida finally reaches its climax, and it becomes clear their bond was borne out of mutual loss- a painful reminder that when someone dies as result of war, the sorrow is many fold. 

People may see Riddle as becoming the antagonist (or the jerk) of the series, but I see him becoming the embodiment of the fears of the people who fear changing the status quo. All he wants is to protect what he has and what he hopes to have- something each and everyone of us can identify with.  With their backs to the wall, the most unlikely of allies come together- everyone’s destiny is now inexplicably tied to the quest for the Laplace box.

On a lighter note, it was heartening to see Captain Otto and the crew of the Nahel Argama once again,  after their absence in the previous installment. The appearance by characters from previous series, especially Captain Bright Noah, even if it was for a fleeting moment, was a nice touch as well. If you are a real hardcore fan, you might even notice another tribute to the original Gundam series, akin to “Char’s Kick”, between the Tri-Stars and the Unicorn. 

Episode Five certainly brings the story full circle, and one can sense everything is building up to a climatic resolution for the final two installments. No one can really say how the OVA will differ from the Novel from here on out, I am sure it will be a fitting conclusion.

The "Lion" and the "Unicorn"

While the screening was certainly the highlight of the occasion, I did enjoy the experience of being surrounded by fellow Gundam enthusiasts, especially at the model merchandise exhibit in Isetan’s toy department. It was nostalgic to see eager fans snap up model kit after model kit, and I certainly felt the urge to add to my already overflowing collection. 

As a closing note, Ani-Culture.net would like to once again thank Sheng Tai Toys for inviting us for a memorable occasion and kudos for a well-executed event.

Vividblaze’s first album was released on the 11th Of April, it contains their work from the 2009 till now. Including the first song(Tight Rope) I heard from the amazing duo in a timelapse video by mockmoon.

I generally like the album with it’s rather easy going tunes and the upbeat, catchy tunes but majority of this album might not suit those listening to keep awake. Of all the songs I especially liked Tight Rope, Mirai Mechanism, Mirai Cafe, Ivory and Pizziciato Mind.

Vividblaze is a duo consisting of Miho Tezuka on vocals and Yasunari Okano, keyboard. Their style have always been something of a mix between electro-pop and jazz, thus giving them a rather unique sound.

They have provided the sound track for the many of Danny Choo’s productions including writing and producing Sukira, Culture Japan season 2 opening, a track not sang by vocalist Miho but by Mirai Suenaga(Danny’s “daughter”).

In fact in one of the songs, Danny Choo even “sang” a bit of Mirai Mechanism during the chorus part.

Vividblaze have also performed overseas like at AFA11 during Danny Choo’s segment, wowing the audiences with their wonderful live. Recently,they went touring around Japan performing their song at many occasions like Danny Choo’s Culture Japan Night and appearing on Radio.

The artist name “May’n” is derived from her real name, and it demonstrates her hope to “always sing songs that will be everyone’s main theme.” May’n was discovered in Horipro’s annual Talent Scout Caravan competition at the age of 13, and in 2008, she performed as the singing voice of Diva of the Galaxy, Sheryl Nome, in the TV anime “Macross Frontier.”

May’n released 2 singles in 2008 which instantly became big hits, each placing in the Top 3 on the Oricon Weekly Chart in their debut week. In January 2009, the long-awaited mini-album “May’n ☆ Street” was released, and it achieved 2nd place on the Oricon Weekly Chart in the first week.
