It's on the first public appearance of three lion-tiger hybrid cubs known as "liger" at the Hongshan Zoo in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province on 11th September, 2008.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-rsjhJ_kZsI/SMypfijGYHI/AAAAAAAAEoA/EhHv_06zBLY/s320/Liger+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245754025294848114" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-rsjhJ_kZsI/SMypf5BUX7I/AAAAAAAAEoQ/aBay3rIM9Go/s320/Liger+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245754031327174578" />
These "ligers" were born to a white Bengal tigress and an African lion. While they look totally normal physically, even cute, I fear that like in many cases of cross-breeding, there may be genetic mutation or there may be something wrong with them mentally. It will take some time to detect any abnormal behavior.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-rsjhJ_kZsI/SMypf1Q8TZI/AAAAAAAAEoY/Qwsm6vm9Ao4/s320/Liger+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245754030318964114" />
I understand that these cubs were conceived naturally and not through artificial insemination but I still think that the zoo should have kept the "beasts" separate. Frida is owned by one of the zoo employees.

For more photos of Amazing Animals, check out ABC News.

One-Dog Policy In Jesus Maria, Lima, Peru

While China has the one-child policy, a report on Reuters mentioned that local authorities in Lima has passed a new law stating that residents of the middle-class Jesus Maria in Lima could only keep one dog if they are living in an apartment. Families who live in houses would be allowed to keep two dogs.

I am a little surprised by this because here in Ipoh, Malaysia, we have a city council ruling, I believe, that allows us to keep the number of dogs according to the size of our compound and size of the dogs.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-rsjhJ_kZsI/SLysU1wiWoI/AAAAAAAAEfk/sj4XMcE9XHs/s320/dog+running.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241253540380433026" />
However, here in Ipoh, like in Jesus Maria, there is no law to restrict cat owners on the number of cats that one could keep. I am not sure why because cats could also be a nuisance just like dogs, especially during mating season.

Residents in Jesus Maria say that noisy, barking dogs disrupt the peace and harmony. I find that people who make their dogs wear "bark control" collars or worse, remove the voice box of their pet dogs, absolutely cruel. Barking is a form of expression for dogs. If they are not allowed to bark then who would know if they are hurt or threatened?

Authorities in Lima say that they would impose hefty fines on families who do not abide by this law, and may even resort to removing the dogs. I think that most dog lovers would rather change their lifestyle, like moving to another place that would allow more pet dogs in the premises, than let the authorities confiscate them.

What are your thoughts?

For the full report, click HERE.

Parrots In Love In Nanjing, China

This is probably stale news to some of you but I was looking for animal stories in China, specifically, in view of the on-going Summer Olympics in Beijing, China right now when I stumbled upon this story of a pair of parrot lovers in Nanjing, China.
Photo credit: World Picture Network
A pair of love birds is not rare but I really love this image. and Dino. They were brothers from the same litter and Snoopy was the elder by minutes. I kept them for 13.5 years since they were three weeks old. They were bottle–fed so you can imagine how close I am with them. There was not a single day through the years that we were separated by more than a few hours and I was there for them every night.

A month ago, Dino lapsed into a series of severe seizures and he died a few hours later. Before he took his last breath, while resting in my room, Snoopy came in and licked Dino’s face. It was as if to say farewell.

When Dino was missing that night, Snoopy walked all over the house looking for Dino. He went in to all the rooms, sniffing at corners and just searching. A few days later, I could see that Snoopy continued to wonder where Dino was.

It has been one month already that Snoopy is alone. He has stopped searching. I wonder if Snoopy knows that Dino has left us for good, or if he just thinks that Dino is away and will be back soon. I have heard of cases were dogs lapsed into depression, refused to eat and died, when the master passed away but I have not heard of the same when a canine brother died.

My sister was telling me that if Snoopy goes into depression, we would not know how to help him. What do you think? Does a dog know that another dog has died, or just away?

Surf Dog Competition

I was randomly surfing the web this morning when I chanced upon this photo on AOL Weird News of a dog surfing. I love them all the same, though!

Pennywell Farm Miniature Piglets

I was reading The Telegraph (UK) online when I came across their compilation of cute animal stories around the world. Of course, living in a regular residential area discounted that and my mother got fed up of my pig collection that she discarded them all one day.

Sigh... I stopped my obsession for pigs then and there.

In the following video, you could watch a litter of miniature pigs, just 5 inches long (there were a total of nine) which were born at Pennywell Farm, Devon, sometime in April, 2008. An appearance on American television has made them sudden celebrities. People were flocking to watch photos and videos of these piglets that the website which hosted them crashed!

They are simply too cute, aren't they?

Canine Fear Of Loud Noises

If you know me personally, you would know that I had a dog, Dino, who suffered from anxiety which was brought on by loud noises and which almost always throw him into a series of seizures. Although he is no longer here with me, dying from complications after a terrible bout of fits, I continue to research on canine issues, particularly those that plagued Dino. Perhaps it is for knowledge, perhaps it is to punish myself with the things that I could have done for Dino to help him with his anxiety or fits. Whatever it is, it doesn't change the fact that my beloved Dino is no longer here anymore.

Just now, I came across this article “The sound of fear: Noise phobias torment dogs” on MSNBC.com, addressing just this issue of canine phobia for noise. I particularly remember there was one time when we had a new neighbor and the lady's car did not have an automatic control of the gate and each time she returned home, she would sound her honk so that her maid would open the electronic gate from inside of the house. My poor Dino was startled from sleep quite a few times by her and since then, he started to be fearful of many different kinds of noises.

There was once when my brother had a bad cough and of course, coughs don't go away in a day or two. By the end of the second week, my Dino was so strung up that he fell into a bout of fits.

I remember that my Dino only developed a fear of thunderstorm about two years ago and with each passing storm, he would be more and more anxious until he goes into fits. I fear along side him each time there was a storm and living in my area did not help him at all since this is an area that is overly prone of thunderstorms.

Anyway, if you, unfortunately, have a dog that also suffered from anxiety, do check out the article for some suggestions to help keep your dog calm.

Bad Dog Chronicles

Two weeks after Dino left me, I still miss my baby so much. It was painful to see him go. I think that to die from a complication from fits was pretty tragic though the length of suffering was short. After 13.5 years taking care of him, since he was three weeks old, it is damn difficult to "let go". I miss everything about him.

Now that he is no longer here, I try to think of all the good stuff that endeared him to me while blocking out all the painful bouts of seizures that he suffered from since he was one year old.

Tonight, I was feeling nostalgic and I thought that I would read some dog stories on the web. I just want to feel good about dogs. I still have Snoopy, but he is the same age as Dino and is frail physically since his bout of tick parasite a year and a half ago.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-rsjhJ_kZsI/SFlKi9XiosI/AAAAAAAAD1A/HwzfGnaSOxc/s400/Bad+Dog+Book+Cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213280008107369154" />
I chanced upon Bad Dog Chronicles just now while randomly looking for dog stories to read. There are many cute dogs there telling their stories in a first-person perspective. These stories just remind me why I love Snoopy and Dino so much. They could never do wrong in my eyes. Though I may scold them when they drove me up the wall, I beat their furry butt and then I fall in love with them all over again when they look at me deeply with their wet eyes.

Pig In Boots

I am sure everyone has already heard of puss in boots.
