Great Blue Herons in upstate New York. Two eggs hatched on April 27, and a third hatched on April 28. The last two eggs appeared to be “pipping” on the evening of April 29.

Naked Mole-Rat Cam at the National Zoo| FONZ.

Naked mole-what? Despite the fact that they burrow underground like moles, and have big front teeth like rats have, naked mole-rats are more closely related to porcupines and guinea pigs than to moles or rats. This naked mole-rat colony occupies a labyrinth of transparent tubes that mimics the underground tunnels and burrows in Africa, where mole-rats live. The web cam is focused on a busy intersection of two tunnels. Mole-rats are the only known mammals to live in large colonies presided over by a queen (like ants and termites).

I was looking for wolf cubs, but…

We’re thrilled to share the news that two eggs have begun to hatch in the nest of Big Red and Ezra, the Red-tailed Hawks featured on our live cam streaming from the Cornell campus. Thousands of viewers yesterday saw the first glimpse of a tiny beak visible through a hole in the egg as Big Red looked on. Viewers also spotted a small hole in a second egg. The third egg is due to hatch within a few days.

Right now, very little is visible on the cam – at Live! Red-tailed Hawk Nest at Cornell University – it has snowed, and the mother appears to be curled around the eggs and hatchlings, but the chat is very lively and informative.

3-year-old Jewel is the daughter of June and younger sister to Lily. She and her brother Jordan are the 2 cubs appearing in the final scenes of the BBC’s ‘Bearwalker of the Northwoods’ (left below) and also the 2 yearlings playing with Gordon Buchanan’s camera equipment in the BBC’s ‘Bear Family & Me’ (right below).

Jewel gave birth to 2 cubs—one male and one female—on January 22, 2012.

The cubs are curled up with the mother. If you watch for a while, you can see them shift around.

A Peregrine Falcon nesting atop a building in downtown San Francisco.  Her first egg was laid on February 19, and three chicks have now hatched.  The Falcon chicks should fledge and begin to fly some time in late April to early May.

In the slideshow above of pictures taken this afternoon, you can see the mother feeding the chicks and then settling down on top of them.

Great Blue Herons in upstate New York. One egg was laid yesterday. Watch for another egg in two or three days.  The eggs are blue.

One of the things I like about animal cams are the sounds — bringing the sounds of the outside inside — and this is one of the best in those terms.  The sound of the heron as they move, ruffle their feathers, the sounds of wind in the trees, the other birds… It makes a wonderful soundscape for the office.
