'Snow White' museum exhibit celebrates the classic Disney animated feature film

“Snow White,” the beloved, first, full-length animated feature film, created by the Walt Disney Studios, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a major exhibit at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.

Called “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic,” the exhibit celebrates Disney’s vision and the artistry of his staff—over 1,200 of whom labored for almost four years to make the film.

Diane Disney Miller, Disney’s daughter and the founder of the museum—which presents the story and achievements of Disney, using the latest technology, historic materials and artifacts to bring his achievements to life—said her father was “completely and intimately engaged in this film from start to finish. It was the first of its kind to have the depth of character, careful attention to story, original music that helped tell that story and superb artistry.”

Premiered at Hollywood’s Carthay Circle Theater on Dec. 21, 1937, the film opened in 1938 at Radio City Music Hall, and played across the United States and Europe that year. In 1939, it received an honorary Oscar containing a standard Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones, representing the dwarfs. In 1989, it was among the first 25 featured films to be preserved in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, and in 2008, the American Film Institute named it the greatest animated film of all time.

Disney film historian J.B. Kaufman, who wrote the exhibit’s catalog, called the film “the culmination” of Disney’s previous work on short, animated films featuring Mickey Mouse, among other characters. “It established a gold standard for the craft of making animated films, a standard filmmakers today still are struggling to measure up to,” he said.

Kaufman said the Disney film is based, in part, on the Brothers Grimm Snow White fairy tale, which he called a "very dark story."

"Walt didn't make a film for children."

The exhibit features more than 200 works of art from the film, including conceptual drawings, early character studies, detailed story sketches, animation drawings, pencil layouts, watercolor backgrounds and vintage posters, all illustrating how Disney advanced the creation of a new art form.

Also on display is artwork from scenes that were never fully developed, or that were deleted from the film, including one in which the dwarfs build and carve a bed for Snow White, and another in which she dances in the stars.

Lella Smith, the exhibit’s guest curator who is also creative director of the Walt Disney Animation Research Library in Burbank, Calif., said the majority of works featured in the exhibit have never been published or exhibited before.

“It’s a chance for people to see some amazing artwork,” she said. The artwork includes one piece that depicts the queen looking into a mirror surrounded by astrological signs, and another that shows Snow White kneeling in the forest with the huntsman behind her, the surrounding trees resembling undulating, female forms.

The exhibit will be on display at the Walt Disney Family Museum from Nov. 15 to April 14; it is in discussion to transfer it to an East Coast institution after that, though this has not been confirmed yet.

Disney Animated Art to be Returned by a Japanese University

Tokyo - A Japanese university plans to return about 250 pieces of original animation art to the Walt Disney Company that were mislaid in storage after traveling to Japan nearly five decades ago. Disney said that the art — cels, backgrounds, preliminary paintings and storyboard sketches — was part of a collection that was handpicked by Walt Disney himself. It was sent to Japan in 1960 for a touring exhibition timed to the opening of the film “Sleeping Beauty.” The exhibition opened at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo in May of that year and traveled to 16 other stores throughout Japan.

“Walt wanted to explain every element of the animation process, so he chose artwork from all phases of production and a number of films,” said Lella Smith, creative director of the Disney Animation Research Library in Burbank, Calif., which preserves the studio’s artwork. “But the primary focus was ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ ”

Although most of the art is from that film, the collection also includes rare set-ups (cel and background combinations) from two Oscar-winning Silly Symphony cartoons: “Flowers and Trees” (1932), the first Technicolor cartoon and the first film to win the Academy Award for animated short film, and the landmark short “Three Little Pigs” (1933). “The ‘Flowers and Trees’ set-up is an extremely important piece,” Ms. Smith said in an interview at her office in the library. She said other highlights included two backgrounds from the “Nutcracker Suite” and “Rite of Spring” sequences in the 1940 film “Fantasia.”

Among other striking works is a sequence of images by the designer Eyvind Earle that show how he created the stylized forest backgrounds for “Sleeping Beauty.” The delicate clusters of leaves and intricately textured bark on the trees reflect Mr. Earle’s interest in 15th-century French manuscripts and the painting of Van Eyck, and foreshadow his later serigraphs.

After the department store tour, Disney donated the artwork to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. But the material was not considered a good fit for its permanent collection, so the museum gave the pieces to Chiba University to enhance the study of the visual arts. [More from Art Knowledge News]

Statue Stolen from Dr Seuss' La Jolla Home

A 2-foot tall bronze statue of Dr. Seuss's The Lorax was reportedly stolen from the property of the late Dr. Seuss' wife in La Jolla over the weekend.

A small statue of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, was stolen from the property of Audrey Geisel, wife of the late Theodore Geisel over the weekend.

According to the U-T San Diego, property manager Carl Romero said he and Geisel noticed the loss on Monday morning.

“It’s a valuable piece because there are only two of them, and it’s an iconic figure,” Romero told the U-T San Diego.

Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, daughter of Audrey Geisel, created the two statues: one for the family and another for the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden in Massachusetts.

The statue was reportedly on a wooden base with the inscription “Unless.” This is the same word used at the end of The Lorax, first published in 1971.

Romero told the paper that he last saw the statue on Saturday afternoon. He suspects the 300-pound statue was dragged from the property to an access road and lifted it over a fence. The property is located near the La Jolla Country Club.

The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ animated movie restored for DVD release

LONDON — The animated Beatles movie “Yellow Submarine” has been carefully restored frame-by-frame for DVD release this year.

Specialists worked for four months to individually clean each frame of the 1968 surreal tale by hand, the Beatles’ holding company Apple Corps Ltd. said Tuesday.

The specialists chose not to use automated software because of the delicate nature of the hand-drawn artwork, the company added.
