This month, Animeigo's Kickstarter bluray for Dagger of Kamui found it's way to my doorstep one cold December morning...so what better time to revisit this 80s Rintaro classic? This movie truly has everything: Ninja, monks, psychedelic flashing colors, cowboys, treasure hunts, a banger soundtrack, and even Mark Twain! But is that truly enough to make this movie great? Let's revisit it and find out!

In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!

Hey everyone! An important announcement regarding the podcast! Starting in December of 2021, I'll be going on a much-needed little vacation for a few months (probably around 2 or 3, depending on how I'm feeling). After doing 105 straight months of podcasting, paired with some minor health issues I've been having lately, I feel like I just need a little break to help me prevent burnout. But like I say in the audio above, I won't leave you hanging when it comes to things to listen to! While I'm gone, I'll be uploading some really great podcasts I was a guest on that I think you'll all enjoy. And to celebrate this milestone, I've called up NewTypeLady from another world to talk all about it with me! Even with an extra long run time for the occasion, we only really touch the tip of the iceberg on just what makes Escaflowne so special, but we give it all we got! Listen as we recount the series' very interesting production history, the great characters that make up this beloved show, and why we think that you should still check out this "isekai" anime all these years later. And for those who already know and love the series, at around the 1:20:13 mark, we go FULL SPOILERS and briefly talk about some of the more interesting spoilery aspects of the series, including how I can never seem to pronounce "Guymelf" correctly, extremely 90s-era anime boyfriends, and lamenting how they don't make messy villains that chew up the scenery like they used to. 2020 is finally almost over! So you know what that means–that’s right, it’s the Year in Review! And much like Krampus, Zee is back to help discuss the results of my annual year-end survey as filled out by you, the listeners! What older anime titles were you excited to buy (sometimes again) this year, and what titles are you looking forward to coming out in 2021? We also talk about all the memorable news stories from throughout this long, endless garbage fire of a year (though if you are utterly exhausted from hearing about 2020 news things, once you get around the time stamp 2:02:49, you can skip to right around the 3:36:56 mark!) I should note that, due to the year 2020 being ABSOLUTELY cursed, my original audio for this ep didn’t turn out great, so I was forced to fall back on my basic Skype recording, ON TOP OF the fact that the survey results got a little borked. So apologies that this episode is far from perfect, but hopefully it’ll still give you some laughs as we try our best to cast out the demons of this wild ride of a year in this extra long episode (with some bonus bloopers after the ending theme! Happy holidays!!)

It's Thanksgiving time in North America, and what better way to celebrate than talking about a cult classic full of tears and despair?! That's right, returning guest and Fukumoto fan Tricia is back to talk with me all about Denpa's new English release of the infamous fan-favorite manga Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji! Started in the 90s, this title started growing a Western fanbase after it's '07 anime adaptation, and now at long last--a physical edition of the original manga is available! We talk about what we love about this new release, why it's worth picking up even if you've already seen the anime, and how a story with such a seemingly simple premise tackles some surprisingly heavy themes in unexpected ways. Also in this episode: what Kaiji adaptations are worth checking out, which Kaiji gambles terrify us, and why Michael Douglas is now officially Anime.

Minor corrections/updates for this episode: The ebook company that did the original eBook release is actually a company close to Mr. Fukumoto! Also, the sound effect ZAWA wasn't quite invented by Fukumoto, but popularized by him. It's derived from the Japanese ZAWATSUKU or ZAWAMEKU. And while the bubble bursting in Japan & debt has a lot to do with the themes of the story, there's also the fact that Japan went through about 15-20 years of stagflation, which lead to many being disillusioned and feeling they had no future since many jobs available were just "dead end" ones. Denpa currently has two full-time staff members, and currently only has the rights to the first arc (13 vols) of Kaiji....though that may change in the future! Thanks Denpa for reaching out and letting me know!

Ryan (aka Blacotaku1) started an ambitious project 3 years ago: to scan his entire collection of vintage Japanese Newtype magazines from the 80s to the 90s and share them with other anime fans online via his Tumblr blog, Oldtype/Newtype. Not only that, but to try to share some of the rare old interviews and photos with various creators, artists, and other big industry names that had been lost to the ages. In this episode, I talk to Ryan and find out what got him started on this project, how he got into anime, and what it means to him to be able to share his love of older anime in print media form with the world.

Sidenote: For some reason, this episode got cursed with various technical issues, so there’s a few spots where the audio may sound a little wonky and it sounds like we’re talking over each other--which, I assure you, we didn’t do when we were actually talking! So please excuse these tiny hiccups. ^^;

A short, ReView episode this time around! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time’s gone by and I’m a little older.
This time of an 80s Sanrio film I rented on VHS probably a million times as a kid, called The Sea Prince & The Fire Child. And since I was already sort of on the topic of well-loved VHS titles, I threw in a mini review of new VHS documentary Rewind This!
